Condemned: Criminal Origins (known in Japan as Condemned: Psycho Crime and in Europe and Australia simply as Condemned) is a psychological horror video game, developed by Monolith Productions and published by Sega. It was launched worldwide in 2005 on the Xbox 360, with a Microsoft Windows version released later in 2006.
The game uses a first person perspective. Condemned: Criminal Origins places an added emphasis on melee combat and puzzle solving, including searching for fingerprints and gathering evidence.
Upon release, Condemned was met with moderate to good reviews by many aggregates and critics. Many reviewers cited its questionable storyline and lack of progression as the game's biggest fault. As a reprieve, the game's solid controls and fresh approach to the horror genre were praised. A sequel, entitled Condemned 2: Bloodshot, was released on March 11, 2008, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Other media forms include an internet prequel and a planned film adaptation to expand the Condemned franchise. The developers have cited films such as The Silence of the Lambs and Seven as inspiration for the game.

I think Condemned is definitely one of the most disturbing games I've ever played. It just does such a good job of creating a queasy environment of brutality, and pacing its horror so that things just keep getting more and more depraved. It's certainly far from the most subtle horror game out there, but I'll be damned if it's not effective.
Try playing Manhunt, tge atmosphere of both games are simmilar, only Manhunt is in 3rd person and is focused on stealth heavily, but if yiu liked Condemned you'll love Manhunt.
wildesthog I don’t think they are similar. As you said, man hunt relies on stealth where as this game you really do need to engage the enemy at all times. I wished someone would release a third person mod for this game.
@@wildesthog Manhunts atmosphere is one of a kind. I don't know how to describe it other than to say it's just really really cool and dare I say "edgy" but before that was an internet slur. I still remember the the opening credits cutscene that plays right after you load up the game with the John Carpenter type synthe music similar to the Halloween movie theme. The game had balls and style.
That goes for many of Rockstar games titles.

Man, this fucken game is a masterpiece. That one level where you reach the outskirts of the city at night, and you open the fence gate to step through, IT GAVE ME A FOREBODING SENSE OF UNEASE that hasn't been achieved by any other game since. A truly intense experience all the way through. This gave me such high hopes for what the survival-horror genre could give birth to during the seventh generation.
And then they released the sequel...
And then came the abominations bearing the Resident Evil moniker...
Evil Within was great, though.

Haha and to be fair, the rest of the cops in the game are just as much mass murderers if we're gonna call Ethan one, basically sending riot squads to eradicate all the violent freaks that have overrun the city.
Defending himself? Does the game take place in Florida or something? At a certain point going into these locations when the last six or so forays led to violent confrontations is kinda asking for it.

Had a blast playing this, can't believe I never played this back in the day. Atmosphere reminds me of SH2, MANHUNT and Bioshock.

I did and am lready regretting it, the melee combat is pretty shit for a melee heavy game, the guys could be carrying a centimeter long stick and hit you from 5 meters, the parry is bullshitty and doesn't work for shit especially with the large 2 handed weapons
I love this game because of it's story, the gameplay I think is ok, the 2nd one has better gameplay but I think the story was "meh".

I don't think I'd call Condemned 2 the Highlander 2 of gaming, the fact is Highlander 2 did *_NOTHING_* right and didn't have a single merit while shitting on the original film from the outset. While I'll agree Condemned 2 was a massive disappointment in terms of how fucking convoluted and stupid it got later on, it had a strong start and the melee combat was even better than ever and was fun as hell and there were some scary, intense moments not to mention the fact that the game improved on some of the originals other frustrations like the over simple forensics, those stupid locked doors, etc. It just happens to ultimately shit the bed, maybe it could be compared more to the Halloween II of gaming; getting it right the first few acts by nailing the suspense, creepiness and subtlety of the original but slowly descending into over-the-top madness with the few good bits becoming fewer and far between not to mention getting really stupid.
Kaye Faye I'm glad you get the Highlander 2 reference. All I meant by it was that Condemned 2, like Highlander 2, just over-explains everything to the point that it becomes ludicrous. All of the subtle paranormal stuff is given a retarded explanation and meaning, it just kills the vibe and mystery of what made the first game so amazing.
This game was awesome bcs it wasnt like any other generic fps horror, the melee system was extremely well made.
This is one of those games I wish I could wipe my memories of so I can experience them all over again.

This was my first video from you, and I've stuck with you for around half a year, (after subbing,) due to your great video reviews in which you're unbiased, fairly criticizing, entertaining, and greatly detailed without getting boring. Condemned and SCP Containment Breach are the only two games to ever make my so disturbed and paranoid that I had to turn it off, though the last section of condemned is total bullshit I think, I just didn't feel right.
Here in Germany CONDAMNED had been condamned from the market because of Youth Code Violations. No quip intended.

This was one of my first ever first person horror games that I played at a younger age. I remember staying up late a few times with my dad (who was surprisingly laxed about this kind of stuff) and getting the everliving shut creeped out of me.
This game used to scare the shit put of me. I had surround sound hearing things behind you and running across in areas fucked me up

4:58 I think the reason you move so slowly is to make you feel more vulnerable. If you could move like a cheetah on 50 doses of speed then the game wouldn't be all that challenging. :P

This is one of my favorite horror games. I enjoyed beating psychos and junkies with blunt objects. Really good dark atmosphere too. It is proof that not all horror games need zombies or ghosts to be scary.

You find the 'dead' body of a victim stuffed in a locker and the game makes you zoom in on him with your forensic camera to ID.
Aaaaand BOO! Still alive.
Creepiest part is still the ruined shopping mall with the mannequin people.
I think this game did it before Bioshock.

The locker jump scare in the abandoned building was more comedic then shocking. You have to scan the locker with your tool but rosa says something like "You have to scan him. Buuuuuttttt you can't do it from there" because your too far away for the jumpscare. "Closer, closer, closer" AAAHHH!

+MikePitcher I know, it started gritty and got fucking INSANE by the end, that's why I liked it! I never played the first one though, I can see that that might skew one's opinion in the opposite direction. Which would make the fucking psychotic clownlady chucking bombs made from Babydolls at you, whilst hacking you to bits with buzzsaw-blade-lollipop look more like a big fuck you instead of pure awesomeness.
Monolith at its best. Like Blood, AvP2 and F.E.A.R. before them, this game is pure excellence. Agree about the slow movement though. That really used to piss me off about this game sometimes.
Seven meets Silent Hill. There's no game quite like it.
They should turn this into a VR game - imagine walking through darkened corridors and having enemies jump out at you.
A funny thing happened to me when I first played this game. So I was in one of the dark sections of an abandoned building map, fighting crazies, and then I heard my mom scream, grabbed my sword and rushed to the garage, and there was a burglar in our garage, then I chased that fucker with a sword before he jumped the fence and got away.
Needless to say, that game is cursed, and I never played it again.
This is the game that got me into darker stories and games. Thank you!!

I noticed that too. Can't complain; I liked the homage. It's funny how now 20 years or so on you can easily identify the trend of that editing style as uniquely late-90s/early-2000s.
This is the most disturbing game I have ever played. Not one of those cool scary games... It was a no bullshit creepy game,the best horror type game I have played.

This was an amazing game for it's time and to me still one of the best survival horror titles. Part 2 did do some things better like investigation but the atmosphere of the first one is unmatched. Storywise I'm still expecting a third installment since the story doesn't end with Condemned 2...

This is an awesome game. And fun fact one of the script writers for this game and it's sequel Condemned 2: Bloodshot was famed crime/thriller writer James Patterson hence the reason why the script for both games was so good and had the right atmosphere.

ive got to say i was not really happy with this game, i bought it because of this review but im glad i got a refund. i really just hated the melee, i could not tell how much range enemy attacks had, when i would block it would not do jack shit, i didnt really die but once in my almost 2 hours of playing it but i just get fucking mad because it seams like my block did not fucking register and i was tired of getting my bum smacked by a power conduit.
One of my all time favorite horror games. Played it so many times. I'm revisiting it on PC because I miss playing it.

Firs Condemned game is so much better game than the second. I really enjoyed it's mystery plot and hidden background, with some really good investigation elements. But being an detective or researcher in the field or CSI as well as Dexter is a lot of fun. U know there is something fucked up, but u r continuing to do your job :D

I know it may be too late, but just so you all know the achievements in-game unlock behind the scenes content. Simply go to the achievements and hit enter on each one. It varies from artwork and early game play video. I have had this game forever and just found this.
Ah man... so many memories. The department store, the farm house basement, the high school, what an amazing game. Condemned is probably in my top 5 horror games ever made along with Silent Hill 2 and... some others I need to think about :P

surprised I waited this long to try this game, it's good, some dumb moments here and there like not being able to jump to rosa from a very small gap and having to use a meat cleaver to just grab an axe right next to you but overall not bad.
I have just finished a game and I found it terribly lacking in horror element. Why? - IT WAS A WALK IN A PARK.
I began by playing it on the hardest difficulty level, to increase a horror-factor, and even then it was incredibly easy. I actually needed to purposefuly handicap myself in order to feel challanged, for example, refraining from using firearms and taser (WHICH IS OP!)
I loved melee combat system though! It was often challanging but since there are no real consequences of dying and levels are LITTERED with first-aid kit. I have never found myself in a situation where I regret not being more careful. There are maybe 4-5 moments in a whole game where you are being surroudned by many enemies and you need to strategise better.
Enemies are not scary at all. Hell - even a butcher (!!!), horribly disfigured, cannibalistic, blood-stained in a grueling environment was laughably easy. I just ran up to him, hit - get back, hit, get back, hit - dead. Jeeez what a dread indeed. Their graphic design is great but they do not make terrifying noises that would unsettle you as you carefully approach them, they are incredibly weak. Those who are tough on the other hand are, well, really slow so... yeah.
The main protagonist is simply too powerful and player is aided by too many different elements to feel really threatened. What a waste of a great atmosphere that this game creates!
7/10 is a max for this game from me. Engaging, with a great audio-visual desing and nice enemy animation, scare-factor not relying for the most part on cheap jump scares, but I do not get where the hype is coming from, and more importantly, why people are terrified of a game where everything is solved by run up to opponent - punch - repeat strategy.
I recommend it for FPS fans, not horror/survival horror fans!
condemned is the only horror game I´ve ever played (finished it today). For me the scariest parts were the beginning and then the part with the mannequins ( 3:09 That was spooky). Altho the game has levels or chapters that are very scary and some that aren´t as much, the game still has a spooky atmosphere and I love it. Personally I would rate it at like 7/10 or 8/10 I enjoyed it as much as the 2019 cod modern warfare or the 2007 cod 4. "DooM" and "Return to castle wolfenstein" I still like more but these games I grew up with, and are a different genre so you can´t really compare them with "condemned". I loved condemned and really suggest it for others to play.
'Condemned' is a horror game made in the F.E.A.R. style. The story becomes somewhat derailed on the end. It has a heavy melee fighting aspect, which is quite well implemented. I am not a big melee or horror fan so for me it didn't work out that well.

This game is awesome, but to this day, I still hate the lighting. I get it, it's a horror game that's meant to be dark, but the lack of light literally gave me headaches while trying to see where the enemies were. Ethan's flashlight is a piece of garbage, I mean I've owned penlights that are brighter.
I don't think Monolith have even one game that's really bad. You can blame Blood 2 on the same game designer that butchered Diablo 3, lol.

I always thought it made no sense that you would be so invested in catching a single serial killer, while running through countless serial killers along the way. Still one of my favorite games ever though.

played it on the 360 ages ago and this is one of my all time favorite games. it's old and looks dated sure but it's still soooo damned good!
by the way it's on Steam Summer Sale until the 5th of July for $4.75 everyone needs to give this game a try.
i have no idea if the PC port is any good or not because it's installing on my PC currently but if it's anything like Monoliths other PC games it will be a good port.
I chalk up Ethan's ridiculously slow movement speed to his (spoiler) high bone density.

I really enjoyed this game despite some bugs/glitches plaguing the game and looking a bit dated.
I also agree with what you said about the atmosphere getting under people's skin. There were times where I was worried about what was going to pop out of nowhere.
I am interested in playing the sequel even if it's considered as the "Highlander 2" of video games.

this game will punish you mercilessly if you got a low engine like myself, parrying attacks its really hard with low framerate

Hey, I know this video is already old, but have you played Condemned 2: Bloodshot? In my opinion, even though the horror has been toned down, the combat system is one of the best out there, reminds me of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, but in an urban setting and with rubble and garbage as weapons.
It honestly be perfect if it was glitchy and the movement didn’t feel like total garbage

If you look at the meele system thoroughly, it has pretty much the same combat as Skyrim (an Attack button and a Block button). But, why do people think that Skyrim's combat is utter garbage while Condemned's combat is very good ?
The weighty feel of it. The way AI does feint attacks, hides and flanks. The teeth flying when you hit a guy in the face with a really heavy pipe.
Skyrim's combat isn't visceral at all. The way a game looks when played can immensely help the game's feel. In skyrim you just hack away at never-ending healthbars. Even Morrowind has better combat, since it can take less than a second because the enemies aren't scaled with your leveling.

By far, one of my all time favorite games was Condemned 2. I haven't played the first one yet (Criminal Origins) but I'm buying it from the Marketplace now. I really wish they would make the sequel backwards compatible bc it really is such an incredible game.
the two (three?) guys with two metal bars in the last level were pretty stupid imo. they blind you when near them, blocking during their chain attacks sometimes doesn't stop them, and occasionally they decide to hit you in the head from no less than 3 meters away. the second battle is okay because the boss apparently dies to one headshot from the rifle (lol) but in the first battle sometimes you aggro all these crawlers and the boss at once so it becomes a huge save scum fest.
however i must say i enjoyed the last level more than any other, probably because the 2x4 fire looks gorgeous and the boss looks great and is fun to fight because unlike his friends he's not pulling any 4 meter reach with half a meter long steel bar shit
