lav mic is a zoom f2 - bhpho.to/3IW39wT
boom mic is a sennheiser MKE 400 - bhpho.to/4aAt1de
I used an additional zoom f2 to record the boom mic. 32 bit float. love it. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
How to spot a filmmaker? - "Hide microphones from the frame!"
😂😂
But it sounded great when you held it in your hand 😈
I know... haha it does sound good.. maybe ill have to start holding it like that 😭
😂😂😂
@@BlaineWestropp1I feel like it’s helpful for some people in a noisy environment to be closer to the mic
Yeah definitely helpful. It’s easy. Which is fine!
"It's a style" - I agree
This is hilarious. The passive sarcasm is part of why I subscribed to this channel
Haha thank you 😊
team unapologetically holding my shotgun like I deliver the news
its ok its ok
Even doubling down with the pfp haha
I think it just comes down to set up time/maximizing "quality". It's real easy to grab a lav mic, hit record and hold it up to your mouth to get a nicer sounding audio (that fits better with post voice over) at the expense of it being visible in the shot. Most viewers won't care if they see them holding a lav mic and it just sounds better. Setting up a shotgun mic takes time, you need mic stands, need to make sure it's not in the shot, needs to be positioned, etc. The lav thing is so easy.
For me it's that. I hold up a MKH416 right to my mouth in the intros of my videos just because it let's me move/walk around in front of a green screen and get consistent sound that fits the rest of my post voice over. IDC if people see the mic or not personally.
the king has spoken!! agree with you.
Straight to the point. Love the content brotha!
Thank u papi
Great video! Love the DataColor spyder checkr ! It’s saved me so many times!
Thank you! I’ve had the one I showed behind the foam in a pelican for the past few months and it kind of just emerged and I was like.. oh yeah.. forgot about ya for a second! Haha.
Bro came through like .. wham .. bam .. money is on the counter 🤣
🫡😇
Well. I’m satisfied.
@@iComplainer you feel me 🤣 my man never misses 🤦🏽♂️
☺️
I gotta say, hiding a lav is one of my least-developed skillsets lol. Usually I'm the only crew and the agency I work for and the clients can be super impatient, so when I'm done setting up lights and camera and rearranging furniture for the shoot, it's time to mic 'em up, I've got like 30 seconds lol. Run it down the shirt, clip it to the collar, and go go go! The hardest is micing someone wearing a long dress. But some of the tricks I've seen are interesting, like clipping a lav under a hat or other sneaky ways to hide it inside clothing.
been there... not easy! there's a tape trick that you can do by making some type of triangle.. need to ask a sound mixer, but I see them do it sometimes. also, tape on inside of shirt works!
@@BlaineWestropp1 you make two triangles with transpore tape with the sticky part on the outer side and make a sandwich with the mic capsule. Then, you just stick it to both the body of the talent and the clothes (under the clothes). You can also skip the DIY part and just buy lav placemet solutions like rycote undercovers or bubblebee lav covers.
There’s the info we needed! Thank you!
The video that needed to be made. subbed
☺️☺️🫡
Thank you for doing this video. I've been in Live TV Broadcasting for 20+ years. It just drives me crazy seeing this nutty trend of people holding lav mics. I love using my Sony ECM-44 mics during interviews. Hopefully, my next clients will not ask to hold them that way 😆😆.
😂😂 that’s cool you’re in broadcast. You know the rules.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I love your content keep dishing it out ✌😎
@og975 thank you! I will :)
I think its partly because lav mics are the cheapest and ppl are trying to get some sort of proximity effect out of them for crisper sound
yep. definitely very crisp right up close
😂✊🏽😩 I feel heard. Yes. All this time spent on setup, lighting, editing, etc. but not enough time to just boom the mic or clip it on.
💯
You're right. Unfortunately many people do this which is so unnecessary because it would be so much easier to just clip it on your shirt
Maybe some just don’t come with clips!
Love the look! What lens did you shoot this on? Thanks man
Thank you! Can’t reveal the lens just yet but stay tuned!
Word, Yo! These are the same people that shoot vertical family group shots. They need to be schoool, dawg!
I may start doing it lol
how would you record dialogue audio between 2/3 people? I only have a Rode VideoMic GO II :(
Would use 3 lavs, and 1 or 3 booms. Or just booms!
How do you use your MKE 400 as a boom mic? I have one but it only attaches to my camera thru the 3mm jack
I have a long cable, that goes to a zoom f2. I typically tape it to a musicians stand 😂 but now I have it screwed on to the 10 foot long insta360 selfie stick, which is gaff taped to the musicians stand arm. Any time I’m using it at a desk, I just mount to to a noga arm and just kind of balance it on the desk. Could show you pictures if needed!
This video has me cackling 😂 also Blaine, what shotgun mic do you have if I may ask?
😂😂 it’s a sennheiser MKE 400. It’s definitely an on camera mic but I use it as a boom mic for YT videos.

Love the video Blaine. I won’t say too much as I see where you were coming from. I agree. Looks kinda funny how people just blindly follow these trends on TH-cam.
Hey thank you 😇
Quick question what camera did you shoot this one ?
Alexa mini LF 😎
LOVE The creativity love the short simple content as always!
Hey thank you :)
There's actually legitimate reasons. Content creators go out of their way to be "unprofessional", sometimes filming on their phone, saving high production value for comedic effect. The lav mic is no exception to this. For many, it's the only quality mic they have that isn't on-camera, it's cheap, and it goes straight into a camera with no recorder/handle required. However seeing a lav mic definitely has gained a corporate reputation after seeing it in so many interviews. So to avoid this, they simply hold it. This also helps give a sort of stage presenter vibe, which is why it's typically commentary content that does this. I can't be the only person who's found myself talking into a fake handheld mic! Another benefit of these is that it's easier to do as the person behind and in front of the camera. For us we can monitor audio and pause if the mic has RF interference or is clipping or is scratching against hair but for them they have to wait til they watch the recording for figure that out.
yep. I hear you fully!
I boil it down to a combination of laziness, ignorance and trend-following.
+ trying to be a certain way.. trying to be casual, which could fall under trend following. and then there are professionals using really good mics and holding them, or podcast style. its all fine, I just remember the days of never seeing any mics lol.
I was expecting a tutorial about attaching and hiding the lav in the beard, to get the best sound possible...damn you missed the chance Blaine! 😂
That may be the next one 😂
That reminds me of that scene in Singing in the Rain
@@Noah-lj2sg I haven’t seen it. Should I watch?
It’s so funny we have to teach people to use an attached clip lav 😂
They started making lavs that look like super mini hand held microphones 😂
This is hilarious.
Thank you 😊
TH-cam has blown the doors off doing things ‘correctly’. It wasn’t that long ago that most jump cuts, especially in a piece to camera, were totally illegal. Now they are accepted as normal because so many TH-camrs did it every day of the week without caring. Holding a lav mic feels pretty similar. A lot of people won’t care what the correct use is they’ll just do it anyway.
Yes. 100%. I remember when jump cuts were punishable haha. now I do them (on TH-cam at least) all the time.
😂 Finally someone noticed it. Thank god

babe wake up, blaine just dropped a new video
😂 hello!
When you know, you know. You know. I know you know.
Yep
Blaine doing god's work lol

I wish I could like this video 100 times.
Just make 100 TH-cam accounts
I always thought camera guys held the lav mic to be ironic. Like they're such cinematographers they don't know how sounds works lol.
I feel this. My original plan for this TH-cam channel was to never use a mic. I then just got annoyed with the horrible sound quality so I bought the cheapest mic I could find and I still use it for TH-cam. Love it.
it's a trend. too cool to clip it
I may have to hand hold it moving forward.
doggo
Loves to chill in the background

what lens are you using
cant say at the moment, but soon!
@@BlaineWestropp1 might be blazar 35mm 1.6 😏
Lol it ain’t the blazar but I would like to try that one out.
Ngl it sounded way better holding the lav in your hand. I think it started from people using the mic on their earpods so they had to hold it close to their mouth to get it to sound halfway decent. Also people are pretty lazy and want their audio to sound good. And it looks "authentic" I guess. Then it kind of became a meme. 🤷🏻♂
All of what you say is true. And it does for sure sound better when in the hand. This is why a mix of lav, boom, and ADR sounds great.. the lav is not the number one just bc it doesn’t always sound the best when on the chest.
Haha thanks man
🫡
this needs to be a public service announcement. but I'm assuming Tiktok and social media people who do this aren't doing it for sound, rather for aesthetics and being trendy.
I could also see it being something that people just do bc other people did it. in reality it doesn't bother me, is super easy, and yields good sound quality. 🤷♂️
Ohhh.. I thought you clipped lavs to beards?!
Sometimes 😎
But what if I’ve known it’s wrong but kinda like how frustrated people get about it?🤔😂
It’s a lifestyle
This should be titled: how not to look like a noob using a mic
That is a good title..
I think the trend of holding mics and having them visible in the shot is a way of making the videos more "authentic" in a way. Like, this isn't a mainstream media sort of thing where we have the money to use a professional audio setup, this is "real". Honestly, compared to the alternative of only using the on camera mic, it's a big improvement so I'm not too upset about the trend.
Yep I agree with you. It’s quick, easy, and does sound good.
Videographers: Audio is 50% of the video. Bad video quality can be excused. Bad audio is unwatchable.
Also videographers: don’t do this!
It’s fine. Whatever.
😂🎤
You forgot to put a huge dead cat on the mic while filming indoors
Making me laugh out loud 😂
I think you should just clip it to your beard, that would solve everything, lol. But yes, having a lot of different mic setups is great for full coverage. 🤣🤣🤣
Hahah there is a video on this channel where I have it clipped to my beard 😂😂
@@BlaineWestropp1 Oh, I haven’t seen it. I’ll have to find it.👍
😎🎤
I mean it's a different way of doing things, I don't think one is pro and not the other, I think people like to do what works best for them, as long as I can hear them clearly I'm fine with it. 😁
100%
i farted into mic.
alright ya got me this time. im laughing out loud 🤣
Holding the lav mic is a pushback against "professional" youtubers I think.
I can see that for sure, but I also think most just do it subconsciously. It’s easy good quality.
I tape my lav under my shirt works for me
that is the way
$100K camera, $200 mic, lol, that’s great, though. Have me giggling. 🤘🏼
😂😂 I guess I’m more of a camera guy than a sound guy.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Dude, I love your channel. Excellent stuff.
Straight to jail, right away

YES, every other "pro(sumer)" / "influencer" these days has had zero professional level training, and therefor copy bad habits like a plague.

I don't take sound advice FROM DPs !!

clip it on your beard 👌🏼
Haha there is a video on this channel where it’s clipped to my beard. Can barely even notice.
Tiktokers and filmaking youtubers being more "casual and authentic." Its a trend thatll shift again. Whats the lav mic?
yep. the lav is a zoom f2. it is the version without the bluetooth. 23 bit float. batteries last for more than a day. records to itself. includes the mic. I also used an f2 to record the shotgun audio.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😬😎
Orrr clip it on your beard..best sound quality + proper use
hahah yes. I have a video on this channel where I did in fact clip it to the beard 😂
Haha, great video!
I don't like this trend. I wonder who started it.
Haha thank you! I would also like to find the culprit
