    So the story and setting of Myth is very inspired by a book series called "The Black Company." They are a really, REALLY good read that I can't recommend enough. Mandy mentions them in the Myth 2 vid, I believe. It's dark fantasy but with a flavor of moral ambiguity that's a lot more compelling than what you usually get, in my humble opinion.

    33:54 "As in, poisoned the Earth?"
    No, as in that they took a natural element and turned it into weapons of war and death.
    The Trow were the dominant race of the planet for centuries because they were the first to use weapons and armor made of iron. Of course, in order to create said weapons they hacked down the primordial forests of the world, which led to conflict with the Forest Giants.
    When the Trow destroyed the Oghres, a race of humanoids that they had enslaved, and killed them until none were left, they realized what the Forest Giants had told them and threw away their weapons in disgust. And that is the reason why in Myth the Trow fight bare-handed.
    EDIT: The rivers in the city where Balor's fortress is located are red because it's the old capital of the Trow Empire. The Trow also used to craft their structures in iron, which is why the sand and the water are red/orange due to massive amounts of iron dust in them.

    • @Aurilion44
      @Aurilion44 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah. They were dominant not only because they are absolutely massive and strong, but also because they were the first ones to use iron and steel. No wonder their Empire was so long lived and have fallen only because they themselves decided enough is enough and went into exile. Imagine trying to fight 12 feet (if not more) tall muscular giant decked out in plate armour with giant two handers as a normal, mortal, run of the mill man-at-arms or highlander. Essentially a Fire Giant, but you are NOT superhuman adventurer from DnD or Pathfinder. Those poor guys in Myth would be screwed...

      @@JERB2012 IIRC there are no connections. There's one possible bit, but it's so slim that even Mandalore thinks it's unrelated, and so do the fans that made the whole list that compiles all the links between Bungie's games.

    Fun Fact: Halo started off as a Myth-like RTS.
    We're still connecting to Halo in some fashion. Also the Music is Proto-Halo and Siege of Madrigal started in this game and kept creeping into every, single, game of the Bungie made Halo games (sans maybe ODST.).
    Also another Fun Fact: the map "Spasm" released by the Digsite Crew for MCC started out seemingly as a map from when Halo originally WAS an RTS, then it was used in the 3rd Person Shooter era (AKA the Macworld 1999 trailer) and now we have a custom mission (Crash Site) made by the Digsite Crew on the map.

    I should say that cause you're watching this as apart of the 'Bungie Rabbit Hole', keeping your eyes & ears open, as well as scanning for any connections in 'Myth' is only going to, i'd say, 'Dilute' your experience (If that's the right word), While the Great Devoid & the Comet are certainly something to keep an eye on, most of Myth & it's sequel are self-contained.
    It's just like what Mandalore said in the first Marathon vid about the Forerunner symbol being almost everywhere, causing people to suspect every circular object, it's a poison that somewhat corrupts your outlook on things that aren't really there most of the time....if that makes sense

    If you're going to continue with the mandalore videos, the most requested will probably be Limbo of the Lost and Ring, which start and finish the absolute bonkers point'n'click trilogy.
    One of my personal faves however is his review of Sacrifice, it's just such a completely unique game. Although if you wanna learn more about Thief, he's also made 3 videos about the first 3 games and a shorter one dedicated to a community mod.

    49:37 McCoy is the PC from the Blade Runner game made by Westwood, ya know the guys who basically made the RTS genre, and that game is INSANE. Like seriously, depending on RNG _the player character may actually be a Replicant._ Give Mandy's video on it a watch sometime, IIRC he also goes into how Frank Klepacki basically redid the Blade Runner theme _by ear_ when composing the game's soundtrack. Brigg's meanwhile is from Limbo of the Lost and I personally haven't watched that video.
    Anyway personally my money is on Halligan in that three-way.

    32:42 I recommend No Strings Prd's video "What is Tiberium? REMASTERED - Command & Conquer Lore" if you want a very quick rundown, but be aware that the Lore can take a very different direction than what we got if you read up on the cancelled Westwood games, like Westwood's versions of 3, working title being _Incursion_ the story would have gone in different directions, even EA's original version of 3 was different from the second and final version and the second is basically what we got with Tiberium Wars.

    12:23 Pro Tip for playing Gates of Hell if you ever take an interest in one of the best WW2 RTS games out today, DO NOT have _any_ indirect fire unit close to a tree or other possible blockage. I lost an entire artillery battery because one of the guns shot a tree that was right in front of it with HE and it, in turn, detonated the gun that fired it, two more guns, an AT gun nearby, and two tanks that were posted in front of the tree and gun battery that was on a slight hill. In Gates of Hell your arty WILL remove walls and trees _even if it kills them._

    Gotta say having read Glen Cooke's Black Company books now(btw great books,basically very berserk if berserk had intelligent smart writing and story) , Mandalore MASSIVELY underplays how much they influence myth 1 and 2's story, setting and characters and even further going on to other bungie works stretching all the way to destiny 2. For example, "the nine" appear in Destiny series and Black Company, a special BBEG slaying bow, many character have very similar mannerisms and personalities to those from Black company for example character and many story beats of "the lady" is very similar to Hive's "the witch queen" , then there is other stuff like some general ways of speaking for example the was Destiny's wish dragon's the ahamkara speak is another thing that took inspiration from the Black company novels

    GURPS or Generic Universal Role-Playing System is a generic roleplaying game system (liked D&D or Pathfinder) that can be set in any universe, era or genre!
    You can play Victorian soap opera, an 80's Sci-Fi Action Flick, an Urban Fantasy game, something cyberpunky, a super hero game, the skies the limit really!
    It's a very old system and it's very "crunchy* (complex, number crunchy hence the nickname) but according to those who play it and love it its very fun if hard to get into.
    The reason Mandalore was talking about dreading GURPS character creation is because there are literally HUNDREDS of books you can pick and choose from, and if you have ALOT of them it can take HOURS to comb them all for what you want. Though I would argue that any good GM would set the perimeters for what books you can and cannot use.

    Oh yea…Command and Conquer remains one of the best RTS series’ in gaming. You can buy the First Decade bundle on EA’s launcher pretty much whenever and it’s absolutely worth it. Mostly split between 3 universes, you have and Tiberium series (modern combat with sci fi elements and a mostly serious tone), the Red Alert series (Cold War elements with a very shlocky and humorous tone later on), and the Generals spin-off (modern combat with no sci fi). They’re all amazing games, with C&C 3 (and the expansion Kane’s Wrath) and Red Alert 3 being some of the most returned-to games of the series (we don’t play C&C4 since it killed the series with how bad it was).

    Borderlands is a great series. One was rough, but had potential. Two is probably the best and has one of greatest antagonists in gaming. Pre-sequel wasn't great. When 3 was coming out people throw a shit-fit for various reasons. However the game itself was really good. The only real issues were the antagonists and one of the new characters.
    Though yes the movie was terrible. It butchers the setting, lore, characters and so on. Instead of a quirky Mad Max in space. It throw away its own identity to be a bad knock-off of Guardians of the Galaxy.

  • @lich109
    @lich109 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Xero, you can easily do a checkerboard formation in WH3. Make 2 unit groups in the line formation, with each unit linked to either group one or two (so in a line they are in the order of 1 2 1 2 1 2, etc.) and then lock the groups. Move one group ahead of the other group, and now they're in a checkerboard formation. It sounds more complicated than it is, amd should only take 5 seconds to actually do.
    There's plenty of RTS games with no speed up/slow down buttons, in fact the majority of them are like that and they're not a drag to play. The difference is they never have the level of scale that requires those options.
    I do love that in this game the solution is to just cast Hold Person and then have everyone else beat him until his head's gone. I can't answer the lore questions, partially because I didn't grow up playing Myth, and partially because it would spoil 2.
    Also as far as I'm aware, there are no references in Myth to other Bungie games. I'm not sure who put that playlist together, but you were looking for connections that don't exist.

      @TheLegitWeebs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure if you're trying to pull a fast one on me, but the playlist to the bungie rabbit hole is by Mandalore himself. I speculate it may be more of a recycled plot for Destiny though. Guess I'll just have to watch the review for the 2nd game to see.
