Carcass, for the same reason ( did not want to down tune a 6 ) Angel vivaldi ( J.C. ;) ) meshuggah. also Enjoy dropping opeth down to B standard on some songs. deftones.
ConqDyst and Alluvial both are what brought me back to 7 strings after playing 6ers for ages. Quite possibly two of the best instrumental metal projects ever made
To me it's mathcore/Djent. One of the first bands I heard with this kind of sound was Erra, Plini, Gojira, modern day Babylon, and from there I fell in the rabbit hole I used to listen to metalcore and deathcore, coming from a 90's hardcore punk basis, then I started enjoying the progressive metalcore bands and the solos and instrumentals from bands like Chelsea grin. I used to listen to thrash metal riffs from bands like artillery and kreator
Trivium’s shogun was a huge inspiration for me picking up a 7 string, still remember it blowing my mind when it first came out. Then I listened to Icarus lives by periphey, I knew after that the 7 string guitar was forever going to have to be in my arsenal. Just for extra credit, meshuggah and after the burial made me obsessed with wanting to purchase an 8 string.
My two were easily Vai and Fear Factory. I actually never had a 7-string, which is sad. My local guitar shop had a Vai 7 string this this pearl eye/triangle at the bottom. It was a $1,200 guitar they had hanging for years. They finally offered it to me for $700 once and I never went back for it (college came) Still regret that to this day.
I used to have only an acoustic when I started playing and used to downtune to like drop f# because I wanted to play Deftones so bad. Floppy as fuck to say the least.
Wow this is nearly all the same for me. I got my 7 in 1998. Meshuggah and Fear Factory were the main inspirations. My teacher was a huge Dream Theater fan so when I bought mine he bought one too so he could show me some of their 7 string riffs. Rock on.
I remember hearing korns shoots n ladders like 25 years ago and going, "Wow, I wanna make those sounds." Begged my parents for 4 years before they broke down and bought me a guitar. I still play everyday.
Basically every Scar Symmetry song made me need a 7, I learned the verse riff in Ghost Prototype I as soon as I got it and it's still my favorite thing to both play and listen to
Dude. Your BEADF#BE tuning video got me to fall in love with my RG again and opened up my creativity being able to explore chords in the lower register. Thank you!
Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment did it for me, everything else you could really get away with a 6 string for home playing but Acid Rain just sets you brain on fire with how cool it is and you really have to get a 7 stringer for that sweet sweet Petrucci song.
KILLER VIDEO! I recently got into Korn's stlye of "riffing" I grew up with them! My first concert was "Follow The Leader" it instantly changed my life. Now Im 39 and learning Korn on my new 7 string! Life is peachy! text-green-game-over
Why is YT showing me hair shampoo ads during this? I mean, Ben’s hair is a’ight, but this isn’t a Robert Baker vid or anything. Lol totally j/k homes, you know your still my favourite uncle Unca Ben!
For me it was pretty much the entire Shogun album, still dont have one though cause im too broke so i got the next best thing in a drop tune pedal. Still hope to get an actual 7 string one day, hopefully.
Obviously Vai's Passion and Warfare made me go, "Damn, a 7 string would be sweet." Then many moons later Awake reignited that, "Damn, I should get a 7." Then A Change of Seasons hit the, "Gah... I need one!" Then many more moons later (in 09) I finally grabbed a 7 string. Learned ACOS and never looked back... to the 7 string. It just ain't my cup of tea I guess. Tried to write a tune on it a few times, but I just wan't inspired. I still noodle from time to time on it, to make it feel wanted.
For me it was a general thing about low tunings... Arch Enemy, In Flames... that sort of thing... But not kidding here, Uncle Ben, while i have been dabbling with the idea of a seven string for quite a while because of said bands, it was YOUR VIDEO about "That seven string tuning you have to try" that sealed the deal for me!
For me I believe it was just that simple intro riff to Dream Theater's "The Mirror". CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG
I guess I'd have to say Korn but, honestly, I just wanted to try one because so many people made it look cool. I bought a cheap (and I mean cheap) Douglas 7 and modified it thanks to watching your documentary of the road flare red Ibanez build.
Dude I (finally) jumped into the dark realm of 7 String about 7 months ago. For the ESP E-II Horizon FR-7. It was a challenge at first...it was like ‘Dude, this extra string is on the way!!’ But I just made a point to play that guitar every day and didn’t take long to get used to it. Love it, and naturally my style has shifted into more of a melodic death metal style.
Another badass Meshuggah 7 string song is Future Breed Machine. Tight playing overall and monster tone. Also I seem to naturally be a sucker for B, Bb and A tunings, so that's a bonus to me. It's not one of their most progressive songs and doesn't have all the heavily divided rhythms you hear on a lot of their songs, but that doesn't take the awesomeness out of it. Meshuggah and Fear Factory are the prime reasons I wanna get a 7 string when I have the money for it!
Been playing Guitar almost 24 yrs here and outta those yrs, almost 18 of them I've been EXCLUSIVELY a 7-string player myself as well. I discovered Meshuggah back in '01(was 16 at the time lol), same with Nevermore and those were real really the (2) main bands that really Sold the whole '7-string Sound' to me. Just cause both bands were both doing things so completely, radically different. Not just from each other but also from any other band (at that time) was doing. Granted, Korn as well as the others still had there influences on me as well. Lol clearly can't mention 7-Strings without the man, myth, legend, Vai! But hands down, for me, Meshuggah & Nevermore🦾🤘🏻🤓😎🎸💯 great vid
Just bought my first 7 string guitar today! For me it was Deftones, Korn, and Emmure that made me want one. And I love it. Paired it with a Orange Crush 35RT.
Hey Ben, big fan of your channel here! Was waiting for a new video to ask if you'd do a weekend wankshop on the infamous Vomit Riff from Lamb of God's song "Hourglass". I feel like it's a riff everyone gets wrong. Thanks again man for all your awesome music knowledge!
@@ryanhass8716 Yeah! I could never work out if that's wah or Whammy- and the internet doesn't seem to know either!! That first riff too though and the really earthy tone of it all
I remember looking at Trapt and Limp Bizkit tabs when I was young wondering why the hell they played 7 strings. A few years later I wanted to learn The Great Dividers by Unearth and that got me in on the 7s. Didn’t actually get a 7 until Rareform and Obzen came out (go figure, 8 string stuff). Never actually got an 8 and now I play a 6 about 90% of the time haha
I bought mine because both of the bands I was in most recently were 7 string bands. Didn't even bond with it until I quit and was trying to sell it, but now it's the only guitar I play.
I just got my first 7 string yesterday, I'd say "Psychosocial" by Slipknot, Every Korn song and "Silence In the Snow" by Trivium really made me want a 7 string
Initially, it was Fear Factory that made me interested in 7 strings, and I got started with a washburn WG587. After that it was Dream Theater, so I got an Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci signature Majesty 7.

Vai’s Passion and Warfare and I spent a long time saving up but never found one I could afford, then they disappeared!!! Years and years later, I was wearing a Mesa Boogie hoodie and Monkey from Korn was mingling after their show and commented on it. I said thanks and then BEGGED them to help get 7-strings back on the market. He said things were in the works!!
That is unfortunate but understandable. Fortunately, You can earn some cash and put a little aside each week for another.Maybe even a better one depending on what you had. You will appreciate the next one tenfold for you will know the value of what you had. It is better to have lost love then to never have loved at all. You're not the first to have had to sell or sacrifice an Axe for monetary reasons. It can happen to the best of us. Regret is just learning a lesson the hard way.Best of luck on your next one.
I was so glad Korn was in there. They are the reason I got a 7 string as my first guitar. The most noteable riff that I can recall making me want to play guitar was “Clown” by Korn

Watching Meshuggah play live as a support act for Machine Head in 1995 was my introduction to the 7strings. Those black Ibanezes with neon green pickups. OMG. Bought the Steve Vai UV777P in 1998 :D
I first wanted to play 7 strings because I saw a single video of Angel Vivaldi, then Dream Theater's Awake album, then anything by Stephan Forté. Don't have one yet, can barely play a 6 though.
Love it! Very similar to you here - started discovering Korn here on the Tube, thought that Head and Munky's 7 strings were the coolest thing ever. Korn actually inspired me to start playing guitar, because power chords and so damn fun! Soon thereafter discovered Fear Factory. Was so used to Korn's filthy low guitar tone that Dino's super tight machine riffery was like an enlightening slap in the face. Like you, I just had to learn Replica and Self Bias Resistor. (Your cover of the latter is fantastic, by the way!) Then I very quickly discovered Meshuggah. Changed the way I looked at music for the better. Saw them live in concert. One of my best life experience without a doubt. Plus, they use 8 strings. Like, how metal is that? So HEAVY. Animals as Leaders was supporting. Tosin Abasi. Holy (New MIllenium Cyanide) Christ... These days, have a 7 string in drop A, with a big fat .070 for the low A. (Took some careful filing at the nut.) So inspiring - sounds beautiful clean and brutal dirty. Love it so much!
For me it was bands like entombed and at the gates who played b tuned 6 strings a lot but having a 7 for it makes it easier to play and have it sound right
Saw Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy / PAIN was using a 7 string Ibanez RG in a live video from 2002. I ordered one a week later or so because I was such a fanboy, but I ended up sticking with 6 string baritones instead.
Bands like Periphery and Animals As leaders as well as some underground tech death metal bands got me interested in extended range guitars, but after buying a couple 7 strings I realized I'm not inspired by the instrument. The longer scale length and thicker neck made it uncomfortable for this small boi to play. So I'll just stick to down tuning 6's.
Nonsense I'm not small but I have small hands and my 7 feels fine you just have to learn to play your seven string like a seven string. I see tons of new 7 string players quit cause they are trying to play it like a six string. You've gotta learn to play it like a 7 before you can easily play it like a six. Play to the gear don't make the gear play to you brother. Anything can sound good if you play to Its strengths. I still play my 6's as often as my 7 but I love having both. Just like I love having active an passive guitars. They inspire me in totally different ways.
Dream Theater-The glass prison pushed me into 7 string. I bought a 7 string around Christmas 2003, an Ibanez 7420. After that I got into Meshuggah and Fear Factory.
What riffs made YOU start playing 7 strings?!
Fear Factory Self Bias Resistor,
Meshuggah - Beneath
Morbid Angel- Where the slime lives

...just to name a few lol
Watching Meshuggah play live as a support act for Machine Head in 1995 was my introduction to the 7strings. Those black Ibanezes with neon green pickups. OMG. Bought the Steve Vai UV777P in 1998 :D
The Animal is one GOOEY riff. Awesome. I want a 7 string now, and I play country and rock.
I first wanted to play 7 strings because I saw a single video of Angel Vivaldi, then Dream Theater's Awake album, then anything by Stephan Forté. Don't have one yet, can barely play a 6 though.
Nice to see some Fear Factory love! Seven Strings of Separation!
(Your cover of the latter is fantastic, by the way!)
Then I very quickly discovered Meshuggah.
Been playing for 21 years and just picked up my first 7 string today. ESP LTD EC-407. For me what made me get one is Unearth.
I thought you might have "A Change of Seasons" somewhere. Then the video starts with it. Much love and respect, Uncle Ben!!
BUT WHAT ABOUT SQUEEBLIES?!
I never thought about that but being a large boi I feel like my 8 string fits me perfectly whenever I do pick up my 6 string it feels too small.
Maybe a baritone would be down your alley? No thicker/wider neck, but tighter string tension for downtuning :)
I have super small hands but man do 8 strings just feel better to me
Dream Theater-The glass prison pushed me into 7 string. I bought a 7 string around Christmas 2003, an Ibanez 7420. After that I got into Meshuggah and Fear Factory.
