This recordong was made January 2, 1996. Eva was diagnosed mid year 1996 with Melanoma cancer that had already gone to her organs, and even her bone marrow. Eva continued performing at the Blues Cafe in Washington DC even when she had to be helped on stage. She passed early in November 1996 and is truely missed by all who new her. Thanks for your reaction video! It's one of the best I've seen so far! 🤗

Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold(do the version by herself not the mesh up with Angelina), Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Would love to bug her to make a Christmas album! It would be fantastic! Unfortunately, she died of skin cancer (Melanoma) in 1996 before any of her songs were ever even heard by the public at large. In fact, she never knew how famous she would become. She was an unknown to the general public when she recorded her songs. This live performance was recorded exactly 10 months before she died. This video wasn't discovered until the year 2000, 4 years after she died. Next I would suggest her versions of the songs, Autumn Leaves, Nightbird, Songbird, Fields of Gold, Danny Boy, Bridge Over Troubled Water, People Get Ready, Chain Of Fools, among many others.

There's also a wonderful cover of "Over The Rainbow" done as a medley with "What A Wonderful World" by a Hawaiian artist named Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole, from his Facing Future cd. He unfortunately is also no longer with us, but I think you would love his music too, he was a sweet soul. ❤ But really, Maddy, just keep reacting to what makes your heart happy! It was the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show presented by Terry Wogan, which was at the time by far the most listened to show. Terry’s producer, Paul Walters, had been approached by an old friend who was promoting Eva’s music in the UK, and had agreed to ask Terry to play it. It was only part way through he was browsing the sleeve notes and realised Eva had passed. The switchboard had to call in more staff to handle the calls, and he continued to champion Eva to playing Fields of Gold as his last song on his retirement show. Sadly both Terry and Paul have joined Eva in musical heaven.

The saddest part of watching this performance in a small club and almost an unknown, is she was gone 10 months later! At age 33. I found EVA here about 6 years ago, and bought all her CD's that were put out, after she passed away. Every song on the CD's were all incredible. Shocking to hear someone for the first time, and realize she was never really discovered, until a few years after her passing. It was the BBC in England that noticed her, and she became this "Who is she" just from this recording.

Surprisingly, she did know a famous musician, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, who did try to help her. He sent her to a record company, but the suits wanted to pigeon-hole her, and she refused to be pigeon-holed. So they had to reject her. When he heard that she was dying, one of the record executives called and apologized for turning her away. She told him not to feel bad. (She's the one who's dying, and she told HIM not to feel bad!)

I believe the songwriters of this song, Harold Arlen and partner, were inspired in writing it, but I don't think they were aware of a deeper meaning. It was named the number one song of the 20th Century and will always be loved because it expresses the longing of the soul for its heavenly home, which has long since been forgotten because of being long lost in lower physical embodiment consciousness. Like the Prodigal Son who has wandered far away from his father's kingdom, deep within he vaguely hears his father's voice calling him home and longs to return. When I heard that Eva Cassidy had terminal cancer when she sang it, made it more profound for me, knowing this deeper meaning.

So glad you found this and reacted to it. As said in comments, Eva recorded this in January of 1996. In August of the same year she was diagnosed with melanoma cancer that had spread. She passed away in November. Eva had multiple opportunities to sign record label deals but she had very broad tastes in music and negotiations never seemed to work out to her satisfaction meaning the record companies tried to push her into one genre of music. She worked with Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac at one point along the way as well. It has been said she was sick with the flu when this was recorded and she was critical of her performance. To me, it is perfect. This is my alltime favorite version of this classic. It makes me hear and feel the lyrics different from any other. She recorded this and other songs two consecutive nights at a Blues club in the Baltimore MD area I believe. Sadly, only one night of the recordings (@14) still exist due to recording issues. This song was played several years after her death in the UK on BBC Radio. It became an instant sensation and became their most requested song and eventually made the charts there. Later, the same happened in the US so her recognition on a broad scale was posthumous. A great talent taken much too soon. Thank you for sharing this and pls chk out some of her other songs. Eva was a great talent. Hugs. Mark

Eva was ill from a bad cold and didn't know during this recording session at a NYC pub that the cancer that would take her life was already spreading. Melanoma (skin cancer) spread to her hip bones, the pain from which caused her to seek medical help. She became famous posthumously across the pond in England. There's docu video on You Tube about her 33 year journey on earth.

Eva did sing Silent Night and other great songs. You should listen to Fields of Gold or Autumn Leaves next. Her bluesy side watch Stormy Monday!

    Dear Maddy,
Eva died of Melanoma Cancer approximately 11 months after this performance in January of 1996. She was 33 when she passed. Eva was diagnosed with Melanoma in May of 96. Her last performance was in September of 96 in a tribute concert to her with other local singers from the Washington DC area, including Chuck Brown (a local legend). All of her friends and family were in attendance. Everyone knew that she was dying. She was scheduled to sing a song (Over the Rainbow) on that final night but she wasn't feeling too well. She was already taking aggressive medication by this time. She wanted to sing very badly on that final night so she made her way on the stage and changed her final performance song to "What a Wonderful World." There wasn't a dry eye in the house!
You can hear her sing What a Wonderful World from her Songbird Album (this was not the live version from that final farewell concert). The kicker to the whole story is that 5 years after she passed away, her album (Songbird) went to #1 in England. And from her popularity in England, she became posthumously famous here in the States.
    God Bless Eva Cassidy.

She does a great version of "Woodstock" too Any song she did, she made her own, and always sounded like an angel. People get so mesmerized with her voice, but she was also a very competent guitar player as well. She was an incredible talent, for sure, so sad that she died so young.

Hey Maddie. That was a beautiful reaction to the finest cover of this song I ever heard. God rest Eva's sweet soul. I firmly believe if she were alive today, Judy Garland herself would have been blown away by Eva's cover. Now, they're both singing with the angels. 💔 💔

Where Eva Cassidy holds the note singing "meeeeee...." at 6.18 always sends a shiver down my spine!
Also do not underestimate the quality of guitar playing on this, it's amazing! Such a tragedy Eva passed
away at such a young age!

There is a very emotional song, and there is an exceptional emotional perfomance, and there is Eva Cassidy. I really wish we could pester her for a Christmas album, but instead, I hope she will be able to regale us when we join her at the pearly gates.

I could spend ten minutes commenting just how much this performance moved me to tears of joy, but inspired me to paint a picture that it caused me to see in my head of just how this song written in 1939, sung by the star of the movie THE WIZZARD OF OZ, Judy Garland, then interpreted by Eva Cassidy in 1996 with a talent given her by God, to be reacted to thousands of times in very recent history, as the World is entering the Prophetic End Times, and tying it all together to present that there may soon be a Prophetic Event take place that will finally allow us to live the desire that the song declares. When the Lord Ushers in the Rapture of His Chrch, we will actually Fly SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW to meet Him in the Sky

@Maddy,Reaction, A new subscriber to your channel….Eva is my favorite musical artist of all-time , Eva Cassidy (RIP) was a True once in a generation Talent who was taken from us far too early at only 33 yo.. She passed away from cancer in 1996 within a year of this live show live at Blues Alley (at the time of this show she had yet to be diagnosed))… ABC in the early 2000’s did a fantastic documentary on her life , her raw talent, her beautiful spirit, and love of music. She didn’t gain any fame until after her death, when a DJ in the UK played this track on the radio, and it blew up., It’s well worth the time to view it. Her talent and unique take on covering well known songs made them her own… Please, check out her covers of Songbird, Fields of Gold, At Last, What a Wonderful World…Good Luck Jjh

You really owe it to yourself to listen to her cover of Willie Nelson's song BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN.
Eva Cassidy wanted to be authentic rather than give on to the record companies that wanted to polish and over produce her music. Her choice to be honest and sing with her guitar wasn't enough for them. OVER THE RAINBOW was a song I discovered after her Eva passed away. It was a song I played for my mother in the last year of her life. She loved music. It gave her comfort during the afternoon when she would turn off the television and listened to a cd of music I burned for her, which includes these two songs.
Tom Jones singing, I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN is also recommended. It is a black and white video from 1967. But the performance is powerful. Your discovery of older music will fill you with much joy. Keep going. And enjoy.

Eva also did a rendition of “Time After Time” (Cindy Lauper Cover) that is better than the original IMO. I recommend you do a reaction on that. It was recorded the same night as over the rainbow. as a matter of fact, I think it was the song done just before over the rainbow

Lots of people have covered this song, but the original Judy Garland track from the 1939 "The Wizard of Oz" still owns it. Garland was 16 years old when she appeared in the movie.
