Back in the analog days, I worked in a couple of different studios specializing in weddings and portraits. During the summer, we would photograph high school seniors-to-be and I shot all of the outdoor sessions. This meant I was in one of our local parks from early in the morning to late in the evening, photographing a different person every 30 minutes or so. I didn't have time to use a reflector so I quickly learned how to best use open sky next to shady areas for a directional lighting. I could even get different light ratios depending on time of day and location. I wouldn't know how the sessions went until I saw the proofs about a week after the shoot yet I rarely had to do a retake for lack of good lighting. I sometimes think we tend to make things more complicated than they need to be today simply because we can. Digital makes shooting portraits much easier today yet we tend to complicate things by trying to bring the studio outdoors. KISS is still the best method when shooting today.

Those direct sunlight ones look fantastic, taking it against darker colors in the trees was really smart when combined with the softer front lighting

how do you fasten them to the top of the stand?
Westcott has a clip that attaches to the stand and then clips onto the reflector. Jay P talks about it at time stamp 03:36

That “clamshell” is just under lighting, which isn’t attractive at all. I’m surprised you kept that footage in the video.
It is under lighting with one reflector and then side light with the other. Did you look at the images. We thought they turned out very nice.

@@fuzzytalz I also thought the light from below was too strong. Or the light up top wasn't strong enough. It was very bottom heavy.
