    Mercedes has three current turbo engines-----M270/274, M260/264, and the M139. Avoid M270/274. The car in the video is probably a M260/264. To quieten that car, switch your oil to Royal Purple and never use any fuel below 93 octane. But the king and best 4 cylinder Mercedes has is the M139 which you can now find in the CLA35, CLA45, C43AMG, C63AMG, etc. M139 is designed to take a beating. M139 is very different from the M260/264 and the M270/274. The M264 is better than the M274. The battery died because the key was left close to the car-----the key kept the car awake. Keep your key more than 30 feet from the car.

      @@ECPP You are welcome. If you really want a reliable non-4 cylinder Mercedes, look for the models with the M276 engine. If you find a W204 2012 - 2014 C300 4matic that has between 0 - 80,000 miles, or a W204 C350 from 2013 - 2015 from 0 - 80,000 miles, buy it. The same thing with the W212 E350 that has between 0 - 80,000 miles, buy it and keep it. All these have the naturally aspirated 3.5 liter version of the M276. But there is the 3.0 liter version of the M276 that was found in the C300 from 2009 - 2012. Mercedes twin turboed this 3.0 liter M276 engine and threw it in the C400, E400, C450, E450, C43 AMG, E43 AMG GLC43 AMG, GLC53 AMG, and E53 AMG. If you find any of these from between 0 - 50,000 miles, buy it. One of the best places to find a used Mercedes Benz is CarMax. Carmax provides a 120 point inspection . Carmax is very good. Or, you can buy these if you find them Certified Pre-Owned at Mercedes dealerships where Mercedes gives them a 175 point inspection. Based on my experience, never buy a Mercedes from a private person. There is a good chance there is a big problem with that Mercedes Benz and the cost to fix that problem is what is driving the owner to sell the car. I have owned the W203, W204, and W205. The W204 is the only Mercedes that seems to have been built like a Japanese car--it can take a beating. I have seen some W204s that looked like they should be in junk yards still running strong. W203 is pure German technology---ultra sensitive and problematic mostly because of the horrible M272/273 engine. Run from this engine as far as possible as you can----worst Mercedes engine ever. However, if you find a W202 which had the 1.8 liter supercharged Kompressor engines, those were bullet proof as well. if you find one with even 150,000 miles, buy it and fix it up---you will not regret it. Those were the Mercedes i thought were as reliable as a Honda Civic, and with proper maintenance, they easily reach 300,000 miles. To get your hands on a naturally aspirated M276 or a twin turboed M276 or an M139, that are below 60,000 miles is gonna cost you a pretty penny. The best engines Mercedes has, are in their expensive cars. Is this a coincidence? I think not.

      He has a 2017 or '18 and that has the M270/274. The M264 came in 2019 and that got replaced by the M254 in '22 as well in the w213 in '21. The Mercedes key has a motion sensor and shuts off if not moved after a couple of minutes thus there is no communication between the two. I can leave my key on the roof and a couple of minutes later if I try to open the car it won't open. I would not use Royal Purple unless it has MB spec of 229.5xx, if it doesn't it is not an approved oil. The noise comes from the injectors.

    • @ikeudechukwu5018
      @ikeudechukwu5018 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@YYZ-SRQ Good to know that it is 2017 and 2018. The motion sensor shut off is probably for the newest key fob models. The key fobs for the model in the video awakens the car when it is a certain distance to the car. The farther away you are, the less likely it is to communicate with the car. You can click the door lock button twice to stop that communication process. Mercedes also says you should change your oil once every 10,000 miles. It turns out that it causes longevity problems for these engines. I use Mercedes 229.5 in one of my Mercedes, and I have found it to be excellent. I use Royal Purple in the other, and it has worked flawlessly. I have used Royal Purple for 15 years and never had any issues with it because I change my oil in all my Mercedes at 3000 miles. So, to each his own. Royal Purple is well known in the performance world. And in fact, I even blend my own oil based on engine response, and time to heat up the oil, and how often the coolant temperature drops to 80 degrees F. My view is that I need 1 quart of 229.52 (5W-30 ) and 6 quarts of 229.5 (5W-40) in my turbo Mercedes and the other non-turbo uses 6 quarts of 5w-30 and 1 quart of 0w-40 . All of my cars use my blend of oil and oil change duration (3000 miles for the Mercedes Benz and 2,000 miles for my non-Mercedes Benz) , and not what Mercedes Benz or any manufacturer recommends. My non-Mercedes car has over 340,000 miles in 30 years of use on the original engine , which still uses the original timing chain, original timing chain guides, and original head gasket. I run it with 2 quarts of 20W-50 and 1 quart of 10W-40. My Mercedes gets 2 air filter replacements every year, which i doubt is Mercedes recommendation. I service my cars based on how i drive. I drive all my cars hard. I do not baby cars. The harder you drive, the more frequent the service required. What i never do with any of my cars is to drive with less than a half a tank of gas. I only use 93 octane i all my cars at all times.

      @@ikeudechukwu5018 M272 has a balance shaft bearing issue and affects W203 05-07 and W204 08-10., however not all M272 had this issue and a serial number search of the engine will tell you if it is affected or not. My neighbour had an affected engine but drove it past 200K without an issue. The W202 never had the 1.8 Kompressor engine unless it was in Europe, The W202 and early W203 had the 2.3L M111 engine and these while rough and noisy are very robust and can be tuned to get more hp with a pulley change. In 2003 the M111 got replaced with a smoother and more efficient engine the M271 1.8L supercharged which has a timing chain issue if you neglect oil quality and changes as the chain is a single row rather than double and can stretch and skip a tooth and then you crush some valves, however you can tell if you have this issue as it wll be very noisy on start up with chain slapping which means a new chain and guides. If you maintain a Mercedes it can last a long time, I drove my 04 M271 W203 to 2020 as I went to an S205. BTW the M271 lived on and became a turbo version in the W204 C250, also this engine was bored out to 2L and used in Formula 3 racing. Best MB engines are the V8 M119, M113 and M278 all very reliable

    I did the shift lever/wipers mistake the first time I drove mine, but have got used to it since - it's actually a good system as it frees up the centre console, plus you have your hands on the wheel for quick changes when doing 3 point turns. For the kick to open on the boot, I couldn't get it to work at all until I figured out that the sensor range is only an inch or two from the bumper. If you just lift your foot under it till it's nearly touching, it will work every time.

    Definitely a noisy engine, but has it always been this loud? Agreed, dipstick is great.
    Sounds like the shop didn't have a battery tender on it.
    Beautiful car and with so few km and warranty on it, perhaps the hard conversation with the dealership is appropriate right now, before a winter really sets in! At least you get it documented , for liability sake, with regard to the breaks, heaven forbid something catastrophic occurs.

      Hi Thomas thanks so much again for reaching out and yes I agree, the battery tender or lack thereof probably led to the low Chabrol issue and the engine has always sounded like that, more or less. Some say possibly injectors make this so noisey, but definitely keeping an eye….or ear on it. These car dealers never fail to disappoint and I have grown to expect a level below the lowest common denominator. I really will keep everyone in the loop on this as there is definitely more to story. Hope all has been good with you as well. How are the vehicles treating you?

    Great review, thank you for the lovely content. We owned a 2016 w205 for 4 years and it was remarkable. Plastic quality could be a thing as MBs are not built like they used to. We also had the noise you have and it was those horrible run flat tires. It never went away until we put a new set (OEM continentals) on year 4 at 80000km, so it was fair. I thought I was going to keep it beyond the financing time, but in February I traded it in for a 2019 C43 and I am having a blast.
    Not many things to report from that either apart from the tires that I had to get a new front set. Continentals again!

    As a C class owner for the past 18 years (W203 and S205) both have been a great car. I also know a lot about cars as I am an enthusiast and work on them as a hobby. The items that you are complaining about are really quite minor in general, body integrity is still better than any Toyota, Honda product which everything is press fit / clipped, take the center consule and move it laterally in any Asian car and you'll be shocked how flimsy it is. Addressing some of your concerns as I have a '19 C Wagon in Canada, yes the engine is quite noisy especially when idling (sounds like a diesel tractor) but smooths out once underway the noise is from the injectors. You have a M274 engine and there is an issue with some cars with #1 piston, I have a M264 and that does not have that problem, but does not have a dipstick anymore. You have more cladding on the coupe than the wagon or sedan and '17 was the first year of the coupe and I think there are some teething issues as with any new design in year 1. I have mixed up the wiper and the transmission selector once when I quickly need to wipe the windshield on the highway and selected R, nothing happened as it was locked out. It is impossible switch unless your foot is depressing the brake so I am not sure how yours bolted in gear, in fact I sometimes have a hard time selecting R if my foot is not depressing the brake enough when I make the change. The front brakes can not be greased or lubed up as they are fixed 4 pot caiipers, there is nothing that can be 'hung up' with them (single piston sliding calipers have a ton of issues especially in a winter salt laden climate) Maybe the kick feature was reworked in later years as mine if anything is too sensitive, I was sitting on the rear changing my golf shoes and one got away and triggered the rear hatch closing. Regarding lights, I have the optional lighting on my car and they are nothing short of amazing (redesigned for my M-Y). What I have learned from car ownership, always buy the mid-cycle refresh car, better is so many ways as items are revised and improved, and some of the issues are that the early years are no longer a problem, the last year for any car model year is usually way more reliable as all the issues have been solved or reworked and there is a ton of TSB that correct the issue, sometimes many parts are redesigned and the part number has been succeed with a better part that made it to the mid-cycle refresh cars or towards the end of production.

    Regarding your noise when backing up. I had a 2010 E350 4Matic. It started making a similar noise and it turned out it was bearing in the transfer case starting to fail. Apparently, the Timken bearings Mercedes used were not up to snuff. Problem is, you can't just replace a bearing. The transfer case is sealed inside the sealed transmission, you have to replace the whole transmission!
    Also, I agree that the shifting lever is a poor design. Incidentally, all this happened at 37,000 miles, right after the warranty expired.

    For sure they're not built like tanks as they were in the past. I wouldn't worry about the clicking engine noise, even Hondas and Toyotas are not much quieter due to the Gdi. Overall I'd expect a little more quality control since they are known as a luxury brand.

    In my opinion, I can’t relate to a lot of the stuff that you said besides the headlights I think you are nitpicking. But I do understand the concern for every rattle squeak and pop that you might hear. I’ve had my W205 for a little over two years 65,000 miles mechanically A-1 it pulls hard and I get 34 miles to a gallon. The only thing that I have accidentally clicked over was the high beams when I was trying to turn, the windshield wipers on.

No squeaks, rattles, only things I've replaced are the battery and tires, both wear parts and replaced at the appropriate time.
