Wouldn't recommend for colder climates. My locks are always freezing closed (all 6) both the lock and hinge. No cover on the locks and water pools behind the hinge and freezes so even if you somehow manage to get the key in you still have to pry the hinge open with a screw driver. Was trying to get to my tool box in the back tonight and had to throw in the towel because I couldn't get any of the sides open and didn't want to spend a bunch of time heating the locks up. Had a Leer for 7 years and never had this issue.

Instead of tape play got a tailgate gasket you can get that and it will seal your tailgate to help keep dust out. It might be good to put a rubber gasket under your tent where it sticks over the roof so when you do open your Goalwin doors it will touch against the rubber instead a hard surface against higher service it might protect against scratches just an idea. @@cementtacocalifornia5638 I can’t find a specific weight for the Evo sport option, I think it’s about 25lbs heavier than the solid doors, not that it matters much. Wondering when all said and done with a roof top tent helper springs would be necessary, I have a hitch hauler for my dirt bike when I go camping
Do you have a link to the load bars you used? And also what you used for the base plate to work with the rsi tracks? I have the cap coming but the load bars they sell are back ordered till next year.
Hi, thanks for the video on the RSI. I bought one a month ago and recently bought the Front Runner slimline rack. Same problem as you, the stud plates from Front Runner is too wide for the RSI rail. May I ask what you did to solve this issue? Currently I used bolts upside down but I’m not happy with that solution. I’m thinking of trimming the stud plates to fit(pain) with the equipment I have. Thanks.
I like the camper, but not a fan of Asian trucks. American here, so I’m biased to supporting our brands. I believe that these campers will fit a Ford Ranger, so I’ll do some homework. Good stuff! 👍🏻
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 Serious question, every time i look at it, the first question that comes to my mind is, how am I going to reach in the gap to clean the dirt or mud off. Do they make some kind of gap filler.
Hey Dustin! Sorry I thought I responded to your comment earlier. I'm actually not worried about damaging the weather seals. I guess if you had gear that was sharp or heavy and needed to drag it out from the side you may have trouble but I make sure that I lift it up and over the seals. The quality is top notch in terms of seals etc.
Thanks man! I called them and they helped me pick out the right size. I think the load bars were around 47 inches wide and the feet adjusted from like 2-4 inches. Don't quote me! haha.
Hi, nice review. I am interested in purchasing EVO Sport for my Tundra. I have a question for you. Are the Gullwing Doors made of glass or is it plastic? Are they break resistant? Thanks for your reply!
I like the EVO Sport better than the Adventure as it has more of a clean look in my opinion. I was one of the first to get it in the US so they didn't have the Adventure when I ordered it. I think the glass is very strong. I imagine that it could be broken with the right tool but it would take a lot. I put some limo tint on it a couple of weeks ago and you cannot see inside at all. Are you concerned with someone breaking in?
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 I am not afraid of burglary, but I am afraid of accidental damage to the glasses in the windows (luggage, other camping accessories).
Getting this for my F250 work vehicle, boss is paying for it! Would be nice if you could remove the rails, and/or install your brand of choice. Also wish the locks were powered or had a push button style, i hate having to unlock stuff with a key.
Pay a locksmith to do a custom install of some mag locks (magnetic), with a remote, might cost a bit though. The locks you see on canopy’s etc. are always poor quality because good locks are very expensive.
Just ordered the SmartCap Evo A & was wondering if you have a link to the exact FrontRunner racks you have? I have the exact CVT Mt. Hood as you & want to do the same setup. Thanks in advance
They did a custom order for me but we're very easy to deal with over the phone. You just need to order the width of the bars and the height of the feet. I got the shortest feet they make and I want to say the 47 inch wide bars....
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Yeah I was looking at the 40-50mm height feet & just wanted to make sure the tent cleared the XM “Sharkfin”. Seems FrontRunner is coming out with a direct fit feet for the SmartCaps sometime soon.
I’m having trouble with my load bars bending with the weight of my rooftop tent. Are you seeing this at all? They used to claim the load bars had a load capacity of 770 pounds but they have since revise this to 66 pounds per load bar.
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 Yes, I do have them but they aren’t going to work. I’ll most likely go for a platform rack that actually has the load bearing capacity that it states it has.
@@MrKevtmiller I have the Front Runner load bars that essentially look the same. I’m not getting any flex from those. That’s disappointing for you I can imagine.
I'm very interested in getting what you got! Here's a question. I bought my 16 Taco new with the factory tri fold cover. My question is will the cap fit with the inside bed rails or will those have to be removed too?
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 just above the tie down rails are pins protruding horizontally about 1.5". They are fastening mechanisms for the removable tri fold hard cover (which came with the Premium Package). They don't appear to be removable. But wonder if they would interfere with the Smart Cap.
Do you know how much your decked, smart cap, racks and tent weigh? Have you had any problems bottoming out? I have a stock 2021 tacoma and thinking of getting the exact setup and wanted to know for light off-roading if the additional weight would be a issue. Also, what mounting system did you use for the tent and the Smartcap?
Hey! I got my truck weighed and the rear end was 3300 lbs and the whole rig was 5600. I had med duty Dakar springs and they couldn’t handle the weight. I upgraded to Deaver Stage 3 and Archive Garage Hammer Hangers. Made a huge difference. Weight is still an issue but did some descent trails today without much problem. 🤙🏼
Thinking of this for an F150, over an ARE Overland or similar. Is it just me, or does it look like you loose some interior space with the RSI over other caps?
I'm not sure to be honest. I've never had another topper but I can't imagine that I would use the top couple of inches of space to make a difference. I like to streamlined nature of the Smart Cap compared to the fiberglass ones.
I have a Decked as you saw. I believe that I had 21 inches of vertical space to the top of the back door. The Smart Cap is angled sharply to match the cab door angle which takes away a lot of the width of the top. I don’t feel as if I’m losing much space because I really would t use that space anyways.
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 hell yeah. My fridge is 18.5 inches high. My rack gives me 18 inches of clearance. The smart cap def looks like it’s the move to make. Do u know the difference between the black cap and the white one? If there even is a difference?
It won't lock the top from the inside. The latches won't shut from the inside so they would be sticking out in the unlock position. I've spoken to RSI about this. That was my initial intention to sleep in the bed but decided not to do that considering this limitation. I think they're going to work on that in the future.
You said you had a diamond back before this - did you want to switch for any particular reason? I’m on the fence between the RSI and the Diamondback and can’t make up my mind.
I loved the DB! In fact I was going to keep it in case I ever sold the Smart Cap but someone gave me a great offer to buy it and I couldn't refuse. That said...we just needed more space on our camping trips for gear and I was initially thinking that I could sleep on the decked system but with the fridge and the battery box it was way too small. I think it depends on what your needs are in terms of space. I cannot haul stuff in my bed the way that i could with the DB. It had cleats that I could strap stuff down with ratchet straps which was great. Thanks for the question!
We just bought the RSI. Now thinking about load bars - I see that you have the ones from Frontrunner -- it seems that you had an issue with it. What reference did you purchase? also, having the load bars, did you have any issues adding the awning? how did you add it since you don't have a platform rack .... we like your set up, so kinda of trying to replicate it :) . We have seen some of your other videos. Great job!

Is there a way to open and lock/unlock the door/windows from inside? Considering getting one and would be using it to camp in a lot. Also, you said you're in SoCal; how hot does it get inside? Want to know if it's safe to have my dog in there when I'm driving around on a sunny day.
They are coming out with latches for the inside not sure when they'll be available though
Wish they had them for 8 foot truck beds.
How do you like the glass side doors? Debating wether or not just to get the stainless doors instead
I thought I might like the solid doors but after seeing them I think mine look better. 😊
Did you upgrade your suspension for the weight of all that? If not how does it ride with stock suspension?
Do you have a link to the load bars you used? And also what you used for the base plate to work with the rsi tracks? I have the cap coming but the load bars they sell are back ordered till next year.
Hi, thanks for the video on the RSI. I bought one a month ago and recently bought the Front Runner slimline rack. Same problem as you, the stud plates from Front Runner is too wide for the RSI rail. May I ask what you did to solve this issue? Currently I used bolts upside down but I’m not happy with that solution. I’m thinking of trimming the stud plates to fit(pain) with the equipment I have. Thanks.
I grinder the stud plate down to make it fit the RSI rails. Works great so far!
I like the camper, but not a fan of Asian trucks. American here, so I’m biased to supporting our brands. I believe that these campers will fit a Ford Ranger, so I’ll do some homework. Good stuff! 👍🏻
To each his own! :) Thanks for watching!
Were you able to keep the OEM antenna fin or did you need to get a low profile one with the room top tent going over it?
Yeah I have stock antenna
Thank you for sharing
How do you clean the glass between the rear window and the Smartcap?
I don't! haha. I have a molle panel there now so never look through that glass
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 Serious question, every time i look at it, the first question that comes to my mind is, how am I going to reach in the gap to clean the dirt or mud off. Do they make some kind of gap filler.
@@uilnosaj There is room to reach in there but it's tight. haha
How much does it cost for a toyota Hilux 2022..? Thanks
Are you worried about damaging the seals when unloading stuff out of the side doors?
Nice rig setup look awesome! What front runner load bar model did you use
Thanks man! I called them and they helped me pick out the right size. I think the load bars were around 47 inches wide and the feet adjusted from like 2-4 inches. Don't quote me! haha.
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 thanks, I’m getting my smart cap in a few days shopping for load bar and I like how the front runner low profile
@@jdevera29 Can you get the RSI ones? Not sure the cost difference.
Can you luck the side windows? Thank you for sharing!
Yes all of the gullwing doors can be locked with the same key. Thanks for watching!
Nice video content! I’m new subscribers
@@howelld9267 Awesome! Coming out more content down the road. 🙏🏼❤️
@@oknofakty They’re tough as nails.
Getting this for my F250 work vehicle, boss is paying for it! Would be nice if you could remove the rails, and/or install your brand of choice. Also wish the locks were powered or had a push button style, i hate having to unlock stuff with a key.
So jealous! Enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
You have IG?
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Yeah I was looking at the 40-50mm height feet & just wanted to make sure the tent cleared the XM “Sharkfin”. Seems FrontRunner is coming out with a direct fit feet for the SmartCaps sometime soon.
No IG yet.
@@bradpeters5891 Nice! I had to do a ton of research to set mine up. Was stressed beyond belief. Glad it’s worked out. Haha
I’m having trouble with my load bars bending with the weight of my rooftop tent. Are you seeing this at all? They used to claim the load bars had a load capacity of 770 pounds but they have since revise this to 66 pounds per load bar.
Do you have the RSI load bars?
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 Yes, I do have them but they aren’t going to work. I’ll most likely go for a platform rack that actually has the load bearing capacity that it states it has.
@@MrKevtmiller I have the Front Runner load bars that essentially look the same. I’m not getting any flex from those. That’s disappointing for you I can imagine.
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 what is their stated load capacity?
@@MrKevtmiller I’m not sure but I told them that I was going to have two adults in the RTT and they said I’d be good
the tent is fix only to the canopy rack or to canopy and cab?
Canopy Rack. The truck bed flexes independently from cab
no leaking? does it have a gasket in between truck bed rails?
No leaking whatsoever but doesn't rain much in LA
haha
Are those 1165 Front Runner rails you used?
I believe so. They are the Front Runner bars.
How did you figure out the front runner load bar issue? Did you have to purchase a separate bracket?
I shaved down the stud plate from the Front Runner Bars to make it fit. The RSI rails were skinnier than the Front Runner.
I'm very interested in getting what you got! Here's a question. I bought my 16 Taco new with the factory tri fold cover. My question is will the cap fit with the inside bed rails or will those have to be removed too?
You mean the tie down rails on the sides of the bed?
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 just above the tie down rails are pins protruding horizontally about 1.5". They are fastening mechanisms for the removable tri fold hard cover (which came with the Premium Package). They don't appear to be removable. But wonder if they would interfere with the Smart Cap.
Three on each side.
Looks great!
Thank you!
Can you sleep in it on a nightly basis? Thanks! 🙏🏽
Can the topper be opened from the inside if camping?
I’m thinking of gttn one bc my dometic won’t fit under my rack with my decked system .
What size Dometic do you have?
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 cfx 75dz
@@acetigg6690 that’s a big boy. I have the 40.
If you want to sleep inside the bed, can you close and lock the rear door/window from the inside?
If the smart cap tailgate hatch is locked can I unlock and open the tailgate independently
I’ve spoken to them about this but at this point it cannot be unlocked from the inside of the truck bed.
Beautiful
Sweet setup, unfortunately they don't offer it for the Nissan frontier.
Did you send them a message? They are adding models all the time.
Great job!
Nice! I had to shave the stud plate on the Front Runner load bars to fit the RSI rack rails. Works fine now
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
By the way, it seems Front Runner now has a kit to fit the RSI caps.

Do you get any leaking? Another reviewer said he was getting some with this unit.
I have only gotten leakage when i use a pressure washer to clean my truck and spray right in the seams.
What did you use to clamp down your canopy to your truck bed?
They have three bolts on each side that attach the bed rails. Pretty secure
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 do you know the name or brand of those clamps? I have a RSI smart cap evo as well for my tundra but they came with clamps that don’t work with my bed rails.

No
I think you could get shorter gas struts so you don't hit your awning.
I actually removed my awning to save weight for the winter. (Haven’t used it since summer). Haha
@@cementtacocalifornia5638 another less invasive idea would be to attach a leash across the mouting points of the struts.
