Honestly, where all did you go in India for you to feel so strongly against it? Varanasi is very nasty and its kinda wack that you draw your hate from our worst city ; its like me walking into the nasty underbelly of your broke cities and towns like Buffalo or Detroit for that matter. Did you see Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore and still hate it? Did you venture into Himachal or Utarakhand to experience the Himalayas? Did you go to Rajasthan to see our palaces in the desert? Super confused here honestly. No hatred but the name fits you well with that type of commentary. By the way I am of Indian Origin raised in Canada so I do know what our world feels like as well

I don't think he over charged you. He took such pride in his work and treated you like a prince. He didn't have much as far as equipment but he had enormous skills. You don't know how many people he feeds with his $1.25/ per shave income. You should have given him at least another 25 rupees. Americans are so used to getting the princely treatment. Gratitude man! You have a good life and you can if you want to change a life in your wanderings. Look at these people as humans just like you, flawed as we all are but with a heart.. A foreign person comes around they feel honored to interact with you and to be your friend for a brief moment. They will go home and talk about you and how much fun it was to meet you.

The crystal or rock after shaving:
"An Alum Block, also known as an Alum Stone or Alum Crystal, is a crystal-like stone that is moistened with water and gently rubbed over the shaved area to act as an antiseptic and to combat a number of post-shaving related skin problems including razor bumps, razor burn and redness. It can also help to stop bleeding from small nicks and cuts.

My man, you didn't have the "drug" version of the Paan, it was without tobacco. Betel leaves (Paan) and a bit of betel seeds are not supposed to get you high, it's the tobacco in the Paan that does the job and has people hooked to it. The version you had was a meetha paan (sweet paan) which is but a dessert and an after-meal digestif, it actually is healthy, and you're supposed to chew and swallow this version, not spit it. The red spit is the tobacco paan. Not gonna lie I chuckled at you spitting it everywhere and thinking you're getting stimulated. Hope this will help you get the real thing on your next trip.

What is frustrating for Indians is when foreign tourists only ever visit the same parts of the same cities and those are the worst parts. I always advise not to travel in those places, they're not representative of India at all, they're more like work hubs. The heart of India is in it's villages, where 65% of it's 1.4 billion people live, much more family orientated. Each state has it's own variety of peoples, festivals, languages, and traditions. Festivals are especially beautiful, vibrant and lively with music, noise and huge crowds of women and girls with long flowing hair and bright, sparkling colourful clothes, dancing in unison. It's like a never ending sea of colours, their clothes make everywhere you look seem like a kaleidoscope. Going to back streets of cities like this you will not see any of that. It's like visiting the US and only ever going to dodgy streets in the Bronx. Then telling people you dont like the US because of that. It's not representative.

I love how the man on the sidewalk is correcting some of the barbers' work. I don't know what it is in South Asia with people staring when something's happening (I think for local/non-locals both), but I find it quite sweet. They're intrigued and don't feel uncomfortable to bear witness to what they're intrigued by. They're also rather engaged, which can be quite appreciated (but sometimes bothersome) from time to time.

The people from hindi belt can not tolerate any one and they hate every non hindi speaking people, hence they always try to defame Kolkata. FYI ...
that crystal thing which that barber used is Alum. Alum is used in cooking as well as for medicinal purposes. In Ayurveda, Alum (Phitkari) is used in the form of Bhasma (Pure Ash) called as Sphatika Bhasma.
Alum can help to tighten the skin, minimize the appearance of pores, and reduce excess oil. It also has antibacterial properties that can aid in preventing acne and blemishes.
Alum can also be used as a water purifier. When clean, drinkable water did not reach through pipelines, people used to drop a few small pieces of alum in a bottle of water and wait for the dust and particles to settle down before straining the rest of the clean water.

Two types of Paan 1. Sweet paan key ingredient Gulkand(rose petals and sugar) and paan leaf is Desi leaf. You can chew and swallow this paan. 2. Tobacco paan key ingredient Tobacco of your choice and leaf is Banarsi. You don’t chew or swallow this one. Just keep it in mouth and spit out the saliva. Don’t even swallow the spit. Tobacco paan is that infamous red color you were looking for. Betel nut is in both paans either dry or soaked. Betel nut and Catachu (kathaa in hindi) are the main ingredients that give color red to paan spit.
