    Pickets are for fences, Ballester's are for railings. The piece of wood at the floor that overhangs the stairs is called floor nosing .

    Verify that the width (space) between Balusters needs to meet a code required width. 6 1/2" might be to wide, but check with your local residential building code.

    Jay, man, that turned out awesome. Everything to do with stairs can turn into a giant PIA! Your wife has a good eye for design, and you did a good job executing. For what it's worth, the bld code for the spindles/ balisters generally runs like 3 1/2" inches max width between them. But it turned out really nice.

    • @Building_Jays_Way
      @Building_Jays_Way  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think they’re at about 4 to 4 1/2 inches. But I mean it’s such a small section I’m hoping no one’s gonna fall through it! Lol

    • @rickwhitescarver8526
      @rickwhitescarver8526 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great job on the completed stairway Jay! I really appreciate you showing the "flaws" that would normally not be seen on camera (dog hair, mistake on cuts etc) and choosing to keep it real life. Learning how to fix those mistakes along the way is it's own valuable lesson which is lost on a lot of people nowadays... and the end result still looked amazing.

    First off: stairs look great!! Really digging the black handrails. On that note, as for black screws... dipping your screws or bolts in gun blue will give them a black oxide finish that isn't as fragile as a paint finish... no dry time either... just a helpful hint for next time.

    Why is the jointer blade safety cover sitting open (NOT covering the blades) from 1:57 - 2:02? I know the jointer wasn't being used, but that safety cover should NEVER hang open. I thought that lesson was learned in the worst way a couple years back???

    Your stairs look beautiful. For other's info these are not built to code. In the U.S. building codes typically require that balusters (aka pickets in your video) be spaced *no more* than 4" apart. Yours are approximately 5 and 7/8" apart. The end ones maybe event further apart due to you centering the spacing. My niece once put her skinny head through loose balusters. The reason you need a different number of balusters based on the width of the balusters. The space between that needs to be no more than 4". So 2.5" balusters could be space 6.5" apart. But 5/8" balusters needs to be no more than 4 and 5/8" apart and centered at 4 1/4" from the ends.
    PS we would love to see shorter videos that give weekly updates, so we can give armchair advise.

  • @tdimccullough
    @tdimccullough ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the pickets are actually known as spindles, and it might be different here in the UK but there can be no more than 4" between them so a child cannot get between them

    • @Building_Jays_Way
      @Building_Jays_Way  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they average around 4 1/4 on the spindles.

    I've got finished pine 1x trim in my bathroom, its got my parents and sisters dog prints immortalized in one spot 😅 so don't feel bad about the dog hair in the finish, what happens when you finish the wood at your parents place I guess 🤷‍♂️

    Awesome! Looks brilliant. Love that you also included the error with your post. You could have edited it out, but this showed not only how to fix but the authenticity of your channel. Well done and happy New Year to you and your family.
