      I had a Moto 360. It was pretty cool, but the big problem with it is that it's an android watch, which while being insanely powerful is incredibly high maintenance, requiring time on the charger every single night.
      I just bought my fourth or fifth smart watch. Every one I've bought has had an always on transflective screen and a battery life measured in weeks, not hours.
      IMO, the mistake a lot of companies are making is trying to make something that's smart first watch second, instead of watch first and smart second.

    I think part of the deal in order for the purchase of Fitbit to go through is they have to keep the Fitbit stuff separate from Google's. That's why they released that Health Connect app, it's like a loophole around not being able to directly sync the data together. They might just kill the Google Fit thing and keep Fitbit as their entire health division in the long run.

    • @Im_Axion
      @Im_Axion ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @SwallowingTheRabbitWhole acquisitions of this size very rarely come with no strings attached. I could be wrong about this but I believe keeping the user data separate (the user manually choosing to sync them being a sort of loophole) was part of the deal. We'll probably see Fitbit become Google's health division for first party products with everything effectively being a Fitbit. Fitbit trackers being the less smart fitness dedicated devices, and then the Pixel Watch lineup that runs WearOS with more smart watch features and the Fitbit health suite on top for a higher price, all under the FitBit umbrella.

    • @SequenceofSound
      @SequenceofSound ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, Health Connect is supposed to work with Samsung Health and other Health apps so you can choose what data to sync.

    Definitely need to see the battery test as that's my top deciding factor. 24hrs just isn't enough. Like what's the point in sleep tracking if I can't use it because I have to charge the watch every night. But I guess charging speed will also play a role in that. Like if it could fully charge in 30 min so I could pop it on the charger while taking a shower or something and be good for another 24hrs, that could be manageable. But the dream is still to have a smartwatch with all the health tracking features that lasts a week+ on a charge. maybe one day.

  • @DylanM15

    The thing I feel weirdest about is using Fitbit as the syncing and metrics system itself. I used faithfully and had some minor input on Fitbit devices for about 7 years. Not that Fitbits aren't solid but they definitely are a very base/entry level tracking system even in their "premium" tier. They aren't internally really that more advanced than some of these sub $50 trackers you can find. Some of their first trackers were semi revolutionary but the market caught up with them so you're really just paying for the Fitbit name now since they were one of the first next to Jawbone. So it's keeping the Fitbit name strong even though they were pretty close having the same outcome as Jawbone.
    I don't necessarily see the issue with the apps being so truncated either. I feel like it's been a trend to use the companies name after acquisition more and more. I mean Nest is to an extent is separate with Google still. Google owns several others which still do stay pretty separate including Fitbit really. Apple has basically reverted Shazam back to being less integrated in iOS 16 at least and Beats still technically is a standalone brand owned by Apple. Even on the app level...Apple has a Watch app, Fitness app, and a Health app. Google Fit is Health, Fitbit is the Fitness app basically and there is a Pixel Watch app. There is some different crossover based on OS but it's a similar comparison to apps.

      Interesting that you say this about the quality of the tracking - have you watched the Quantified Scientist on TH-cam - he tests the tracking of smart watches against ECG devices and lab quality sleep trackers and Fitbits are consistently at the top of the pile in terms of tracking and sleep accuracy, especially versus other android smartwatches!

I also tried several Samsung Gear watches & fitness bands (Gear S, S2, Fit 2 Pro) during the 2010s. I find what I need most in a watch is a screen that is always on / can be viewed in any kind of light including bright outdoor sun, and long battery life. Smartwatches are amazing as a concept for using when pulling a phone out is inconvenient or even unsafe (crime, hiking). So far, I find the Garmin watches serve me best so far. I have not tried any of the Apple hardware yet but Android Wear does not pass the battery life or sunlight visibility test. These days I bounce between 3 Garmins throughout the year: Venu in ~September to May, Vivoactive 3 LTE in May to ~July, and Instinct from July to September, matching with parts of the year where I will be outdoors in sun most vs indoors or in more dark/overcast days. I am thinking of replacing the Vivoactive 3 LTE with either the Approach S62 or Forerunner 945 LTE next spring (April). Battery life in GPS workout mode isn't good enough anymore on that VA3LTE.

      I agree that the thing missing from most smart watches is an AoD display visible in sunlight. That really kind of necessitates a transflective display, and my "dream" smart watch runs WearOS but has a transflective display, which some Garmins use, but they are pretty low on smart features.

    Personally I've tried a few smart watches and fit style watches, and so far the one that has served me the best is actually the cheapest. I got this Xiaomi MiBand 6 as a pack in on a phone, but it only costs around $45 (converted). It doesn't do top end smart watch stuff, but it does heart rate, steps, oxygen, sleep tracking, timers/alarms, controlling music, view messages etc. All with an AMOLED screen and around *** 7 DAYS OF BATTERY ***. You can actually get a two week battery if you tell the heartrate monitor to ping less, but seven days is fine considering the recharge to full is about 30 mins. I don't need to send messages from my watch and I don't need it to run super advanced apps, some fitness tracking and watch functions are perfect, plus I can see it in the sun. I will probably buy their model one up that is more of a smart watch based on how much I have loved this inexpensive product. Destroys the Garmin I used previously that cost 6x the price.

    I got the Pixel Watch a day before its official release and within 4 hours it was picked up by FedEx, on its way back to Google. Having a large wrist, 8.5 inches, the large band was about an inch shy of fitting without causing pain. The watch looked pretty small on my wrist, and the battery life was terrible. It went from 67% when I received it, to 38% in the span of 30 minutes as it was being set up. Which was more difficult than it needed to be pairing it with the Watch app as it kept prompting to confirm the 6 digit auth code. Oh and if you make a call on the watch you need your phone on you or have Bluetooth earphones paired to end the call as there is no way to do it on the watch itself...

    • @linohugo97
      @linohugo97 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the exact same switch. So, the main differences are that Fitbit vs TicHealth default integrating, where I personally like Fitbit a bit better but takes a while to set up the full features. On the wrist, Pixel definitely feels more elegant vs the chunky, masculine look that the Ticwatch has, but tbh not much of a different feel-the Pixel strap is a bit foreign putting it on but not much different than the Ticwatch standard strap. One thing that happened was that I wore it for the first time today and it was really cool. I set it to download a playlist of 220 songs. it went down to 20% within 2 hours. BUT, again that's for download that many songs. Afterwards, it lasted me the rest of the 6 hours I worked on battery saver mode with 3% to spare, so not super shabby. I can update you tomorrow regarding battery life. Where Ticwatch has 90% compatability in features with Google, Pixel makes up the rest and it's VERY nice to have native Find My Device and integrating into the Google ecosystem rather than a moon orbiting closely. I've yet to test it out for more features and tweak the settings more, to be honest. I'll test the Pixel Buds integration, as well as it's LTE capabilities. And also, the Pixel's screen is PREMIUM compared to the Ticwatch! It's night and day difference since the Pro 3 has a decent display and LED over it to save battery. But where Ticwatch Pro 3 excels in battery by leaps and bounds, lasting me 3 days with decent usage throughout the whole day with no charging, the Pixel doesn't compare. but again, that's something I've yet to test out properly since I've had it for a single day. Hope this helps a bit.
      edit: I didnt mention this but the charger for the pixel lacks a good magnetic strength, but as it turns out, the watch has Qi wireless charging capabilities, so that's nice to know if you need to charge your Pixel watch between use if you have a phone charger and can reverse wireless charge.

I know some of the features they mentioned being available are blocked behind fitbit pro/premium like detailed sleep scores, ECG app and health metrics.
    I know Apple has a premium fitness app too but that one is almost more of a coaching method with workout videos but doesn't block out any of the detailed analysis of your day to day activities and sleeping habits.
    So will all those features be an easy access thing like how the Apple Watch performs or will it be accessible until your free 6 months of fitbit pro/premium expires??

    I suspect that due to Fitbit having ~15 years of development would make it very difficult to just roll over to Google Fit. The Fitbit ecosystem is quite extensive, and this decision may help ensure that other vendors, and current Fitbit customers/users still have the systems in place. I bought an early version of the LG smartwatch, while trying to find a reasonable use case for one. At that time it just was more of a distraction than value. I may end up with a Pixel Watch to see if it adds anything of value to me, but I'm still just not sure if I'll find one.
