    Mixed media paper has more sizing and a lot less (or no) cotton content. 100% cotton paper, though, is better for glazing, with Arches being the best, many say, for this technique. I like pure cotton better for dry (and wet granulating) texturing. I like mixed media for when I want my paint to float longer or when I’m tired. If I really want the colours to pop, I go with 100% cotton. I like both kinds of paper. It just depends on what I aim to be doing. Great vid showing the difference in behaviour of the papers. I’m sure it’ll help people make decisions.

    Interesting difference. I actually started out doing mixed media, using the typical wire bound journals by Strathmore, Dina Wakley, Ranger etc. When I went to try my hand at watercolors (I'd typically been using acrylic paints, distress inks etc.), I didn't like using the mixed media paper as I felt like I had to work quickly or it'd look bad. I watched some videos on wet on wet watercolors, and heard about Arches paper. I got some Arches and using wet on wet for the larger areas, like sky backgrounds, my watercolor paint was much easier to work with and there was no anxiety to hurry before the paint dried and had lost its ability to be worked. So I'm staying with Arches for my watercolors ( it also makes the colors look brighter), and my mixed media journals for when I want to play with my acrylics, inks etc.

    I thoroughly searched this paper out and for us in the US it's much less expensive to use cotton watercolor paper. I buy precut 5x7 30 pks for 5.99 and I paint on both sides. Canson is just 95lb 120gsm which is a good indication for why I don't like it but it's awesome for drawing 🎉 Thank you Rae for everything! See you around ❤

      It’s great paper, but remember that it won’t be as robust as watercolour paper because it will start to disintegrate if you add too much water. It is, though, as mentioned in the video, really good for blending but go easy with it.

    Daler Rowney being a British based company is probably cheaper for the mixed media paper. Unfortunately it is very expensive in Australia, and almost impossible to get. I have found a local cheaper watercolour paper that works more like this mixed media paper, and also have some Ohuhu paper that I like because it acts much like what I'm seeing with your mixed media paper. I like both of them more than arches for my style of painting. To me, arches is like trying to paint on blotting paper. Unfortunately Ohuhu only comes in one size, 14x10. I like A3 size, so use the local paper for that. I have splashed out and bought some Baohong paper which should arrive in the next week or so, and I'll see how I go with that. I did buy a different local brand watercolour paper which was on special and I bought 3 pads of it. Unfortunately it is horrible as it pills up if you put too much water on it, but I've found it is excellent for pastel pencils and a whole lot cheaper than ingres paper, so it won't go to waste.
    I must say I like Daler Rowney oil paint too, but then maybe I'm a bit biased as I was born in the town where it is made 🙂

    I use both if using more than one media but I still prefer my cp 140lb Lanaquarelle for traditional watercolor. I can work faster and most mixed media including the featured brand just doesn’t work with floating the pigments the same. It takes a long time for it to soak in and I preprime my paper to make sure my pigment will just fill in the wet surface and then figuring the time I have to drop in color just doesn’t work the same and glazing is the heart of wc techniques and it just isn’t the same on multimedia paper due to the sizing. For straight painting that’s fine or as a sketchbook but it’s true everyone has their preferences. But I am very familiar with this paper. For those who just strictly would be going into wc work or college, they would want specific techniques to be shown and in this case I still would recommend the best wc paper one can afford. Out of that environment definitely do as you like.

    I think the main difference here is the sizing of paper (mixmedia vs watercolour) and wood cellulose vs cotton paper. I think it really depends on the technique you are after - I am mostly using wood cellulose watercolour paper exactly because the lifting and other effect techniques are showing much better on it than on a cotton one. I do practice on Mixmedia (smooth surface) and watercolour student grade (rough surface) depending on what I am doing.

    Thank you!!! I'm so over everyone thinking cotton paper is "better." It's only better if you paint in a style where you need the paint to quickly absorb. Cotton paper absorbs the paint too quickly for me and it doesn't lift as easily as cellulose paper. The paint is also less vibrant on 100% cotton paper. That's my experience with Arches anyway. I'll take Strathmore or even Canson over Arches any day. I have a ton of Arches wasting away in my studio because I don't like it but I think it's going to be great to use for my journal or to gesso over and use for my acrylic paints.

    • @helencampbell
      @helencampbell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you. The simple answer is, sort of. It depends on the quality of the paper. I frequently use cold pressed paper in my tutorials because I prefer it and I rather like the effect, because you can build up stronger colours. I plan to do a different tutorial on this. So in short, I would recommend the mixed media paper for newcomers, and coldpressed is my go to for stringer colours. I hope that makes sense. You are right in saying that the hot press paper is used for finer details such as illustration. I am a botanical illustrator by profession, but I still prefer cold press paper when I’m working on illustration work.

I would only use hot pressed for botanicals because with the flat surface paint sinks in and isn’t easily blended or lifted. Hi. It’s very different in that it doesn’t have the absorbency of cold press paper.
      It’s a double edged sword really because it means that it takes the paint longer to soak into the paper but it also makes blending easier. If you’re a new to painting, then I highly recommend mixed media paper for this very reason

    I'm going to buy a DR mixed media pad to try, looks very interesting.
    Also I have a question about paints. For some reason, I'm not at all keen on Winsor & Newton but like Sennelier and Schmincke. Some time ago, Schmincke had a limited edition floral set, which I still have and like. Considering that I enjoy pinks and purples probably more than I should, which other Schmincke colours could I get to experiment with?

    • @helencampbell
      @helencampbell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I also have that floral set in mention but it was a limited edition. I use it quite a lot in my tutorials and I list the colour separately because you can buy them as separate paints. I’m not terribly keen on Windsor and newton either. That’s just personal choice. To be honest, you don’t need an awful lot of things because you kind of course water down Reds to make a lovely pink tone. One of the colours I’ve been really drawn to all the time but I don’t use it a lot on my videos, is piementite genuine by Daniel Smith. It is a lovely pinky purply Browntown and it’s just divine.

    • @gnostie
      @gnostie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@helencampbell Yes, the piemontite is off the charts. I used up my first 5ml tube, now waiting to get a 15ml one, since Jackson's wants £9.30 for 5ml and £18 for 15ml, so thrice the amount of paint for twice the price.

    • @helencampbell
      @helencampbell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What I mean by sticking is quite simply you can feel the paint being absorbed into the paper, rather than being on the surface of it. It makes the blending process slightly harder. I hope this makes sense

Everything from finished paintings to color tests and doodles. I don't know how to compare it with the Daler Rowney, as I haven't seen it available in the US.
