Oh my, I love my American Standard Champion 4 toilet!! Changing the gasket every 2 or 3 years takes no more than 5-7 minutes. It's quiet and has a *strong* flush.
I never install the Kohler the metal bracket against the porcelain WILL rust and there is also a gasket on the flush valve of a Kohler which will also need replacing periodically. I like the AS Cadet 3 have installed hundreds over the years with no issues.
I have 4 American Standard Titans and have never had a blistered gasket. I change out the Gaskets about every 3-4 years as maintenance and never had an issue. I do think they should do a better job with pushing back the porcelain coating in the the way bottom hole as I have to clean the area going into hole because of lack of coating. One more inch would do it.
In my previous house, my remodeling contractor installed an American Standard Champion Pro in my main floor bathroom. It worked flawlessly for several years and I loved it so much that I had a second one installed in the master bath. Now in my newly constructed home I am having three of the same models installed.
The quality control on American Standard is abysmal. 50% of new American Standard toilets I install have manufacturing issues directly out of the box. I’ve installed over 5,000 toilets
Since the American Standard gasket issue arose new replacement gaskets no longer fail like the older style. FIY all toilets will require maintenace at some point, this is still a great product. Not to mention its whisper quiet.
thank you, trying to decide now if I want to try the total tank rebuild myself... paid rebuild or new toilet... and if so, what brand... yikes... seeing people complaining about waiting for kohler faucet parts helped me decide on AS for my wonderful high new kitchen faucet, finish wasn't great but, love the function! thank you...
The early 2000's Kohler Wellworth Ingenium toilets were by far the best flushing toilets. They redesigned them in 2008 with the 1.26 gpf and not for the better
Thank you for sharing this video. The first options seems the best because of the low water line. Can you please, please recommend a toilet that has a super low waterline that prevents splashing? I don't understand why any brands make toilets with high water line which splashes. When I was in one of the European countries they barely use any water so there was NO splashing. I am not sure why the US doesn't take a cue from them.
US uses siphon flushing, rest of the world uses gravity. low water leaves streaks.. Asians have water jet sprayers to clean the streak.. americans dont
@@jonking7345 Yeah, that low waterline made me take that toilet out of my cart at Lowes. Looking for other options now, which is a shame because the toilet was otherwise a great deal...
I have 3 American Standard Cadet Style / Right Height / ADA toilets. All installed in 2012 (13 years ago). Each has the FlushMate III 503 model M-101526-F3 pressure assist flushing mechanism. No problems at all. Changed one tank gasket earlier this year. Should probably go ahead and change the other two.
We are replacing our American Standard Cadet toilet for the second time in 20 years. Ridiculous. Both units made in Mexico and the elongated bowl develops an internal crack, so the bowl does not hold a proper water level. Tank water level remains full. Would not recommend American Standard. Toilets used to only be replaced when the owner wanted something more modern.
that is my concern, so far every plumber says "or you could just get a new toilet for almost the same cost" "new" is not necessarily better... I'm a 71 year old thinking of rebuilding the tank guts myself (yikes, I've done the easy stuff, float, flapper) paying a plumber to do it (nearly $300) or, new toilet but, I don't want a tall toilet (I'm short and low, is better for intestine function... do we assume all adults are too weak to get up or have knee issues? darn I'm sick of hype). Tired of advertising banter vs facts. And, the AS seal issue is a good example, we buy something with a flaw... and then pay someone to fix it? sheesh... I'm back to thinking of trying to rebuild the old one myself. Who knew it would be this much research.

I would look at the Toto Drake 2 instead. The original Drakes were great but the Drake 2 is arguably equally impressive. Toto's tornado flush is a better design than Kohler's and the performance is superior IMO. I installed one at my house a few months ago to replace a Glacier Bay that cracked and it's a high quality toilet with a powerful flush. I normally gravitate towards older toilets but I must say I'm very impressed with the Drake. Not hating on Kohler, my mom has two Cimarron 360s like the first one in this video at her house and they work pretty well but I will say the Toto is superior.
I have a Kohler cimarron and I’ve had nothin but problems. Went with American standard for my second bathroom. I’ll never buy kohler again. Customer service is absolute shit.
I see a lot of love for Kohler, but don't forget that Mansfield is an American made brand. Search for a video of a Mansfield Summit flush. Get a 1.6 gallon tanks and swap out the flush valve. There's a valve hack that will give you more water per flush. I've been researching for the last few months and I know what I'm buying now.
I just put one in at a relatives place and it is performing good. Me personally i would take a chance on it as a homeowner as a plumber i wouldn't take a chance on any lower end product so i don't get called back, unless of course that's what the customer wants. For $250 in my opinion is worth a look opposed to $600+ for a pressure powered toilet.
I have two toilets in my house one is a Kohler with the new flush mechanism the other has the old flush mechanism. The Kohler is junk. The new and improved mechanism is garbage don't be fooled. I was always told that Kohler was the best, and maybe it was but it is not the best anymore. The good one is a Glacier Bay.
Glacier bay and Kohler are literally the same. Kohler updated their flush valve. Ive installed over 5,000 toilets. I prefer the Kohler Wellworth Highline 1.6 GPF
@@Red_Twizzler So maybe the answer is to get a toilet with a 1.6 flush. The Aquapiston in mine drops as fast as you raise it. Is that what's been upgraded?

I've got an older Kohler toilet and can't seem to get the right parts for the canister flushing assembly. I went to a Kohler dealer - he sold me parts that didn't work. I went to the Kohler factory - they sent me parts and they don't look the same as what is in the toilet now, even though I gave them the toilet tank serial number. If I buy another toilet, it won't be a Kohler because of the canister flush mechanism.
Very helpful post! Can you believe humans can get to outer space but can't mass produce a reliable toilet flush mechanism? I'm a techie and want the latest design, but this lag you described is very real and very much a deterrent to adopt anything new.
yup, read of people complaining when I was shopping faucets... over a month for a part that failed in the first year... the reason I keep thinking of just rebuilding my old toilet. why pay more for a poor quality control item?
The American Standard Cadet 3 does suffer from that BUT I replaced the gasket with an aftermarket and have never seen the issue yet (5 years in). So not worth it..... slow down there cowboy.

Do NOT buy American Standard toilets. They were designed to be difficult to install. In order to attach the tank to the bowl, you have to use two bolts. That’s normal. But the end of the bolts go into tiny little wells that you can’t get your hands into. Starting the nuts on those bolts is next to impossible. A job that should take a couple of minutes can take you hours. You see, the well is also designed so it is difficult to use a socket to start the nuts.
God D#$MN IT!!!!!! I was just going to buy the American Standard and then found this. F@##K! I've been looking at freaking TOILETS for 3 DAYS. It's a damn nightmare!
Get a Toto Drake with tornado flush (not the 2}. You can get them for about $300 plus a seat from a wholesaler (don't buy from Lowe's). Little more than the average, but they seem to be bullet proof. I'm ordering 2 of them to replace my American standards.
weeks here, going back and forth between trying to rebuild the inside of my older toilet myself or pay a plumber, or... new toilet... why pay so much for a new toilet with new problems? it may be worth the struggle for the $30 rebuild kit. Plumbers keep saying "nearly the same cost to install a new one" how does that work when a new toilet is about $300? The $150 ones have crappy reviews...
Speak for yourself when you say "we're all trying to conserve water". I don't give a rat's ass that I use 1.6 gallons of water compared to 1.28. I want my waste be gone! And those Kohler Aquapistons are garbage. I don't have that problem with flappers.
American Standard can eat what they are flushing. Never buying one of those again. You should never have to replace parts on something that frequently. Just buy a better brand.
