Great retrospective review on this game and funnily I stumbled on your video while I am in the midst of posting my own SaGa Frontier 2 videos and playing the game! This game is truly a gorgeous masterpiece with its drawn-by-hand background. Although I have to disagree with you in regards to the music but I guess it all comes down to taste in music to me the music in this game is some of the absolute best of many games maybe piano music is not your kind of thing?? because a lot of the saga frontier 2 music are piano pieces. SaGa Frontier 2 music is arguably some of the best music around and one of the stronger saga game music-wise right up there with Unlimited Saga music which was also composed by Hamazu. Hamazu really great with piano pieces. as for weapons breaking in this game I feel your pain when I started this game I was so worried about breaking my stuff as I am used to rpg games hoarding items but then I found that the game gives you plenty of weapons as monsters drop them easy there were points in the game where I had way too many items and getting new weapons was actually annoying as I had to always throw stuff away. It is just best to break your weapons and get chips I ended up having over 6000 chips by the time Ginny's time came and that was because of the sheer amount of training I spent in Vogelang town you should have mentioned that in this neat review too that those towns you can visit can be used to train and level up and that is where you will be doing most of yer fighting I clocked out about 80+ hours into my game due to the sheer amount of training I did. This game also benefits from you seeing guides and such to know what attacks can be sparked and what equipments are out there that are good and where to search for quell weapons that do not break such as the granite staff gotten from a certain monster in Rich's game. As for battle of south moundtop I feel your pain oh good I have ptsd flashbacks just fro the mere mentioning of that! and I started out the same way as you I thought that this was not so bad at first playing it I literally wiped the entire map clean of enemies all except for the steel soldiers and god oh lord I spent 2 days 2 DAYS just trying to successfully defend against them to stop them from getting the base each time they managed to get the base and I too had to reset, reset, reset and reset and I had to resort to using save states that battle was complete bull crap man!! utter bull crap! can you imagine playing that without any save states at all? holy crap.
Glad you liked it and again for the music, not only is it super subjective but as I said it's impossible to listen to it by itself I played this one RIGHT after the SaGa I and the musical styles are worlds apart. It's similar to if you watch Nostalgia critic he reviewed every Terminator Film, I watch a lot of movies and when he talked about the last terminator he was very dismissive of it, saying it's the same the same. I saw that one in theaters, and greatly enjoyed it I was like 'damn this is the best one since terminator two.' While he was pessimistic ala it was the best of the worst. I feel that because he saw literally every other film back to back that might have ruined his overall viewing just like how Frontier I did for II Again on a playthrough somewhere down the line there's a good chance i'm going to be dumbfounded I didn't notice how good certain arrangements were. SouthMound yeah, that was no joke, i should have put a trigger warning lol
@@Kamen_Gaming Yeah that is why I said it is probably not yer taste but that do be happening though there were many songs of saga frontier 2 I did not notice I liked so much till I heard them again or sat and listened to a song completely. I did play Saga frontier 1 first like you did though both games have great music but I do love the piano pieces of hamazu in frontier 2 a lot and it fits the game oh so perfectly. a lot of emotional moving songs in game too such as Erfolg and a few others. haha yes that crap was a nightmare battle of south moundtop i recorded a video of that one myself but I had to skip out/leave out a few parts because I had to break it apart due to the sheer amount of restarts basically what happened for me since they kept capturing my base is somehow by some lucky shot I managed to actually kill like 1 steel soldier and that forced him to retreat and somehow he failed to retreat so he vanished off the map and I won never again will I play that nightmare you couldn't pay me to play that!! in my opinion battle of south moundtop you start to see the many flaws of this otherwise great game come out mainly the flaws of the tactical rpg segments there is a lot wrong with how it works especially in regards to enemy retreating or your own units never clear what triggers it I had retreats even when none of my guys died. on the other hand since you mentioned the Egg in this retrospective review did you ever feel the pain of fighting the Egg at full power? that requires you to ignore all 6 bosses you gotta fight the Egg stone form included...I did and word of advice unless you are ready for a heck of a fight don't try it. even with my 800 - low 900 HP team it was still hard! and I barely scraped by especially when the thing turned everyone to stone except 1 person. by the end of the fight Gustaf who has an LP total of 21 was down to 1 and Ginny was down from 12 LP to like 4 and the fight took nearly an hour to finish don't do it but would be awesome if you maybe bring it up sometime ina future unrelated video if you ever step up to the challenge yourself
@@Naglfar94 Yeah plus unlike Frontier I the soundtrack of II was harder to find alot of times it was 'this video/link has been delated or taken down.' So that frustration in making the video could have for sure played into my perception of the music. I tried and was like 'NOPE I've seen people do it, but even in a bit of an overleveled party the Egg I fought with no Stone or Tree was still no slouch.'
@@Kamen_Gaming Yes it really sucks a channel I once frequented that had Saga frontier 2 soundtrack up I recently found vanished it really sucks this happened very upsetting as i enjoyed hearing the music and also showing some of the songs to people who never played a saga game before such as a few friends of mine or just those who like music in general. there are a few spots to still listen to frontier 2 soundtrack though if you want here is a link to a place I go at to hear the soundtrack from time to time:downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/saga-frontier-ii-original-soundtrack there are other game soundtracks here aswell but frontier 2 is one of them since you do videos based around games maybe this can help for material for future videos for background songs as you are talking. and I see you did a reveiw on Silent Hill 1 awesome! Silent Hill 1 is a masterpiece even today in my opinion we don't have that many great horror games that hit quite like silent hill does there is so much I can say about the 1st game alone. but what makes it work as a horror masterpiece and why it has aged so well is the games use of psychological horror rather than direct horror with jumpscares and all that which is why for me personally as it can be different for everyone you included but no matter how many times I play silent hill even knowing the layout of the game and everything each playthrough still scares me as if I was playing for the 1st time and it is because it touches just the right mental switches they knew what they were doing in regards to psychologically messing with you when making these games heh SIlent Hill brilliant up to the 4th game before team silent went defunct and all that. I will def be watching your silent hill review when I get the chance. also another game that may catch yer interest since you seem to be covering games from the ps1 era is Koudelka it manages to blend horror and jrpg into one fine mix. I have been trying to get a good close friend of mine to try silent hill out for the longest but they are more into playing modern games on like ps4 and all that they have a hard time getting at some of the older games lol but for me it is the opposite I play more of the classic games and actively seek them out XD but the only horror game they have experineced so far is five nights at freddies and just a few of the resident evil games and the 2nd resident evil via the remake that came out haha. silent hill is a game I cannot recommend enough to newcomers. real shame some actually will either miss these games or just straught up neglect to try even 1 of them. but back to saga frontier haha I see you have decided going against the full power Egg is not going down I say good choice Lol it is pure torture! and I have to agree there even weakened the Egg is still no joke I faced it with stone and tree forms destroyed by the end of the fight it was a close call for Ginny Knights once again I coulda got a game over. You see there is a move the Egg likes to use I sure you know what it is called Star quake and that move seems to always deal direct LP damage maybe I was not lucky or maybe the Egg just does that by for me the Egg kept using that attack over and over a lot so I lost so much LP. If you do not have dead stones or something to protect the Egg is not a boss you can safely take your time beating you must defeat it as fast as possible. Overall depsite it being hard I enjoyed how epic and grand the fight felt it is a given with nearly every SaGa series game I am sure you know since you played frontier 1 and minstrel song possibly? I have played both frontier games and the full romancing saga trilogy on snes and unlimited saga not a single saga game fails in the boss challenge department even with an overpowered team so I can appreciate them for that you'll get your fights worth at end game on each one. hoo boy sorry this was such a big comment reply anyway great channel i can't believe you only have like 93 subscribers you deserve so much more especially with the retrospectives you have covered so far some real good games under your belt. the PS1 era had a loooot of awesome games especially rpg games you will have plenty to cover.
@@Naglfar94 That was actually the site I used lol, and it happens with alot of OST'S because game studios didn't imagine an era of digital downloads and music so sometimes the rights are really odd. This happens for every meduim, T.V. Film they coudn't imagine where we would be a two decades later which is no fault of their onw. I think you might enjoy the Silent Hill review, Since from what your telling I felt a very similar way as to how it tried to scare the player, thanks for the game recomendation I'll be sure to check it out, I was thinking of Parasite eve for Halloween because again that mix of RPG and Horror and though Traditional can work well, sometimes re invinting the wheel can indeeb be neato. I do also play alot of modern stuff, I've been playing alot of Code Vien and I want to do a vid on Dragon's Dogma cause I feel like that is a modern day classic. Yeah that move he JUST kept targeting Ginny I was like 'Damn dude cut my girl some slack yo!' as for subs, yanno it's slow and steady lol, If you look at my first vid to my latest the differnce is night and day, i'm glad you liked it, and hope ya like the other vids.
I love this game... its a bit sad that they had to cut some corners for example will's second posible wife was meant to be his cannonical wife, but they didn't manage to complete her quests in time so she ends up feeling like just a shallow replacement also, you can take the count of people that liked ffxiii to 11, those games are great
Yeah IIRC this came out pretty late in the time of the PSone so that is a shame, multiple wives would have been interesting, but I feel like it's still a super SOLID game (Minus a few points like that insane battle lol) It's not like frontier one where they cut out an entire character and also most of Aesellus story lol. Also lol the council of ten is hte council is 11 now.
this entire series' reception in the west always made me sad. look how long it took for the snes games to get translated lol its still pretty bad, square never released imperial and emperors saga here
Holy heck I saw your name and was like 'christ what did they get me for now lol' Yeah I mean JRPG's were a tough sell back in the day, hence square's hesitation to give us SaGa 1 (FF2). Honestly part of the reason I'm currently learning Japanese is because they're so many great JRPG's that are just stuck there and as someone whose been learning for 4 months yeah Japanese is HARD as shit, so can't blame translaters for taking a good while lol.
I feel like they each did some things better than the other. Frontier I was just JAM PACKED and I thought the fights were more fun, but I felt II had a much better overall and solidly paced story.
@@Kamen_Gaming ohh i liked the story i wouldnt deny that its definitively better written than 1 But im a gameplay Guy and i felt frontier 2 quite missed the mark at that The fact you need to pretty much play in the perfect way, grinding in just specific scenario to get any advantage, waste all of your money, do duels and even kill certain specific bosses in the very last dungeon to be able to finish it is a real flaw imo Specially because i recall getting in the last dungeon in frontier 1 using red and having 4 well developed party members only and even then i could rotate them to restore LP and defeat the final boss In frontier 2... If you did something wrong you had to reset. Not having the multiple playable races and the free scenario exploration were also letdowns. I loved the srpg mode tho (aside from south moundtop ofc) and i quite liked the standard battle system ( aside from the new HP system) But yeah, not my favorite
@@meryl17 exactly, having battle ranks in a game which you lose progress with characters because of narrative switch is also extremely offensive design-wise

Never could get into Dragon Quest 😂 put a good 20+ hours into 8... Just couldn't get into it.
As well it's not like my other favorite companies haven't fallen apart 🤷 SMT over here dropping mediocre games with day 1 DLC for WAY to much.
Even if everything falls apart, I still have my PS1/PS2 collection and a few systems modded to play roms 🙏
But for real, for those of you who can still find joy in these series... I don't hate you 🤔 I'm jealous of you 🤷 cause I can't find the joy I used to in these things but some of you still can and that's awesome.
Do you know how much I wish I liked Xenoblade ? 😂
But no it's so boring I fall asleep playing it 😅
Great retrospective review on this game and funnily I stumbled on your video while I am in the midst of posting my own SaGa Frontier 2 videos and playing the game!
@@Kamen_Gaming Yes it really sucks a channel I once frequented that had Saga frontier 2 soundtrack up I recently found vanished it really sucks this happened very upsetting as i enjoyed hearing the music and also showing some of the songs to people who never played a saga game before such as a few friends of mine or just those who like music in general. there are a few spots to still listen to frontier 2 soundtrack though if you want here is a link to a place I go at to hear the soundtrack from time to time:downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/saga-frontier-ii-original-soundtrack
there are other game soundtracks here aswell but frontier 2 is one of them since you do videos based around games maybe this can help for material for future videos for background songs as you are talking. and I see you did a reveiw on Silent Hill 1 awesome!
I love this game... its a bit sad that they had to cut some corners
for example will's second posible wife was meant to be his cannonical wife, but they didn't manage to complete her quests in time so she ends up feeling like just a shallow replacement
also, you can take the count of people that liked ffxiii to 11, those games are great
Yeah IIRC this came out pretty late in the time of the PSone so that is a shame, multiple wives would have been interesting, but I feel like it's still a super SOLID game (Minus a few points like that insane battle lol) It's not like frontier one where they cut out an entire character and also most of Aesellus story lol. Also lol the council of ten is hte council is 11 now.
I'm one of them so they are 12
this entire series' reception in the west always made me sad.
look how long it took for the snes games to get translated lol
its still pretty bad, square never released imperial and emperors saga here
Holy heck I saw your name and was like 'christ what did they get me for now lol' Yeah I mean JRPG's were a tough sell back in the day, hence square's hesitation to give us SaGa 1 (FF2). Honestly part of the reason I'm currently learning Japanese is because they're so many great JRPG's that are just stuck there and as someone whose been learning for 4 months yeah Japanese is HARD as shit, so can't blame translaters for taking a good while lol.
I quite like frontier 2 but i definitively think its inferior to its predecessor
I feel like they each did some things better than the other. Frontier I was just JAM PACKED and I thought the fights were more fun, but I felt II had a much better overall and solidly paced story.
@@Kamen_Gaming ohh i liked the story i wouldnt deny that its definitively better written than 1
But im a gameplay Guy and i felt frontier 2 quite missed the mark at that
The fact you need to pretty much play in the perfect way, grinding in just specific scenario to get any advantage, waste all of your money, do duels and even kill certain specific bosses in the very last dungeon to be able to finish it is a real flaw imo
Specially because i recall getting in the last dungeon in frontier 1 using red and having 4 well developed party members only and even then i could rotate them to restore LP and defeat the final boss
In frontier 2... If you did something wrong you had to reset.
Not having the multiple playable races and the free scenario exploration were also letdowns.
I loved the srpg mode tho (aside from south moundtop ofc) and i quite liked the standard battle system ( aside from the new HP system)
But yeah, not my favorite
@@Jrdotan is this your mission in life to post this to every video talking about frontier 2
@@omensoffate theres like
2 videos talking about frontier 2
@@meryl17 exactly, having battle ranks in a game which you lose progress with characters because of narrative switch is also extremely offensive design-wise
Todfiend is a banger. Everything else is kinda forgettable
I love frontier 2 the best rpg for me much better than frontier 1.
Lol
VMU not UMV ;)
Saga is one of the best franchise of all time but I'm not a fan of novel RPG so I prefer the first Saga frontier. I remember when SF2 came out and I'm so excited. I can say this is a good game and story telling is great but I'm bore after playing for 2-3 hours. 🥲
