I like when sequels are based on bad endings because it means in the universe where the good ending happened they just live happily ever after, and whatever nightmares that take place in sequels aren't inflicted on the characters.

I loved the subversion of tropes with the Mistletoe curse. Getting cursed to die is nothing new in RPGs, and in any other game you would go on a grand adventure which would eventually result in some obscure method of curing the curse and living happily ever after. Not so in this game. You're cursed very early on, by a somewhat minor character, and you're told quite bluntly that there no cure. At all. Ever. And that never changes throughout the game. Yuri's fate was decided during the tutorial dungeon and he never uncovers a method of subverting it.

Don Bluth's Anastasia was one of my favourite movies as a kid (and tbh still to this day) so I might check this game out. Also this game came out in 04 and her body wasn't found till a few years later. This would've been during the theory that Anastasia survived the massacre was still around and what the cartoon movie was about.

I LOVED this game back when I first played it. The absurdism, the deadpan humour. The improved graphics, the weird as hell story that bounces between being hilarious and heartbreaking. It's so underrated, so I truly appreciate you covering it. My best bud and me have been going on and on about Shadow Hearts sadly being a dead franchise, but maybe Pennyblood will hopefully re-invigorate it. I'd love to see a game achieving well-deserved success in its footsteps.
Thanks for the video, man. I truly think you did a lot of barely listened-to people a huge favour by making this, putting it into the spotlight for once. Kudos to you!
Just a little addendum concerning the OST: Yes, the majority was penned by Hirota. Some standouts by Mitsuda.
But, also, Kenji Ito (Joachim Theme) and Tomoko Kobayashi. Let's not forget their contributions to such a weirdly engrossing game.

Veronica does NOT randomly pick a party member. Who she picks is based on which answers you give to her questions at the start of the sequence.
For clarity's sake, since you skipped it in your SH1 review; Amon was the second-most powerful Fusion demon for Yuri (behind the Seraphic Radiance) in the first game. It originally belonged to Albert Simon, but if you earn all six of Yuri's elemental Level 3 Fusions, a secret Destruction Stone can be looted in the room before the fight with Simon. Simply beating Simon with the Destruction Stone in your inventory transfers the Amon Fusion to Yuri. This explains why Yuri starts with Amon in SH2's story and why Simon's spirit appears at the end of the mission to upgrade it to Neo Amon in SH2.
The reason Kato's soldiers are called The Mutant Apes is because the name is literal - they actually WERE Apes that Kato mutated into humanoids. Raiden was the first-born, and underwent the most rudimentary form of the procedure, which is why he appears most ape-like. Ouka was the most recent mutation, having undergone a perfected version of the procedure, which is why she appears most human-like.

@@Domar7431Makes sense to me. Even if it's an unconventional spelling, Yuri/Uri is a pretty common name in Eastern Europe.
I'd say that, for stories set in European-inspired settings, the name of a character in Japanese is often a rough approximation of something that would be more commonly said and written differently, in order to make it work with the phonetic quirks of the chosen writing system. It's like how Guts in Berserk is originally written as "Gatsu" if you translate the symbols phonetically, but in context it's a reference to the circumstances of his birth (being delivered by cesarean after his mother was hanged, almost certainly by accident as the result of someone who was mutilating a corpse).
From a localisation perspective, sometimes they just make things up completely but this really looks like a case where they paid attention to the context and made an effort to reflect the intended names, rather than literally romanising them and having the old man who fights with a puppet that serves as a means of addressing his grief at the loss of his loved ones not share his name with the character from Pinocchio whose motivations were similar.

    • @Fooacta
      @Fooacta 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@casanovafunkenstein5090His name in the JP version is "Urumunafu" so it wouldn't even be a variant of Yuri. It would be something closer to "Irmanoff/Irmanov. The probably localized it to Yuri cause it sounds more like a more viable name for a JRPG protag to western audiences.

This is an enormous video but I'm not even upset because I fucking adored Covenant. In particular to this day I often cite it as one of the best endings in a video game ever as it still makes me cry whenever I replay the game. Even outside the exceptional ending it's just such a great mix of campy B-movie vibes and silliness that few games ever attempt to match. Very little can compare to the sheer joy of all the nonsense around Joachim, from how he just picks up random large objects to admire before using as weapons to the peak insanity of the Man Festival.

  • @TrollPrince

you really nailed down the beef i have with ffx-2's True Ending - the game's very much about moving on from the old, looking to the future, and letting go. the ability to just get tidus back at the end feels like it really guts out the entire theme of the game badly, in a worse way than the 'yuri dies instead of moving on from alice' ending (on its own) from this game. anyway, superb video series for a franchise i only ever saw in adverts in gaming magazines, great work man

    • @ZX-Gear

It's been quite a while, but I believe the reasoning behind Yuri's death was something along the lines of:
First of all, I don't think he was aware he would be offered a second chance at going through his life and saving Alice, that seemed to be a pleasant surprise. The actual reason he accepted death was that earlier in the story, it was stated that there was only one way to escape the mistletoe curse: die before it completely erased everything, which might initially seem somewhat counterintuitive. Yuri was aware that he was incapable of putting the curse off any longer, and decided dying as himself was a truer expression of who he was than having everything he cherished erased. His soul being sent back to a second chance was just the cherry on top, albeit a pretty massive cherry.
Anyway, thanks so much for covering this game. It ended the series nicely, and I'm glad that they never extended things unnecessarily. I think you should also leave well enough alone, and not review any subsequent games that Nautilus may or may not have released, please, for the love of God, just let it end here, I beg you.

I still remember receiving this along with the strategy guide for Christmas the year it released and have never felt such anticipation for a game quite like it since. The overall tone for the game compared to the original was very much welcomed. I can't say implementing that same tone from the original SH to Covenant would have had the same effect with the updated visuals, cinematic scenes, and full voice acted segments. With that said, I haven't played the Shadow Hearts games in well over a decade. Perhaps it's time I revisit them and see how they hold up today... with exception for FtNW. Thanks for taking me down memory lane with a classic of mine that I regret having parted with. Keep up the amazing work!

One of these days I'm sure you'll cover a game or series I've actually played, but until then I'll continue to watch your excellent retrospectives at least until they reach the heavy spoilers sections. For what it's worth, you've inspired me to add Koudelka, Skies of Arcadia, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, and Tales of Symphonia to my already massive backlog (still not going to play CD-i Zelda lol), but I just haven't had the time for any of them yet.
Keep up the great work man. Despite me not being very familiar with the majority of the games you cover, you've still earned your spot as one of my favorite TH-camrs this past year or so. Your level of writing/analysis/commentary quality is just hard to come by, and I'm grateful to have found you as early as I did.

Thanks for covering this series Majulaar! Your first video got me to play Koudelka, and despite how slow and awkward the combat was I came away loving the game and its characters.
There was more than one occasion in the story that genuinely choked me up, of which I'm sure you know a few of them.
I definitely plan on playing the SH games in the future, but for now Koudelka was definitely a special game on its own and the inspiration I got from it helped me flesh out some ideas in my own writing. All thanks to your videos, props!!

Legend of dragoon twice. The effort put into these is undeniable man. These scripts must be novels. Ty mate, keep killing it.

Shadow Hearts Covenant is funnily enough the first and ONLY game in the series I've played, so any tonal incongruence is not really a part of my experience. I just took it all in as it happened, and the mood, the demons, it was all a very interesting thing to see when most of the JRPG's I had played up to that point where fantasy, or FF 7 and 8. But at the same time I can't help but feel like I missed out on something by watching this retrospective, because it now feels like if I had a grasp on Yuri's character from when he fought alongside Alice and went through all that he did, maybe I'd have a different perspective of the plot.
Because as is, I was mostly just left disappointed by the ending having Karin be his MOM of all people, rather than allowed to be her own character pursuing her own goals now that she's had this wild ride. Especially with the scenes and vibes they had shared... an icky feeling, I must admit. But even when that threatens to overwhelm me I can always count on Joachim transforming into GRAND PAPPILLON and I usually feel better. God he's so amazing.

The good ending of SH:C is said to be the canon ending but all of Yuri's existence still hangs on Karin's Pre-destination paradox. Meaning even if Yuri is to be with Alice in the good ending, he has to find a way to meet Karin and send her back in time to meet his father. Is the mistletoe curse happening a significant event for Yuri and Karin's meeting? And if so, can Yuri then choose to "stay alive" in his second run where Alice is also there, since Karin will be sent back to time anyway and therefore also make the alternate ending(with a twist) canon just so he can live peacefully with Alice and Roger Bacon. Or is there a way to lift the mistletoe curse without having to choose death.

  • @greendishatibaia9899

Great video, this is my favorite game of all time and I only played it once, Its been more than 13 years, I cant believe it. My take on the good ending is that Yuri in fact did die, he wasnt reborn, nor Alice. That was his reward, they found themselves again in some kind of afterlife. Also, the humorous tone ironically balances the HEAVILY dramatic tension that is there in every single cutscene and interaction, from the very beginning. Yuri lusts for Karin? Kind of, but its more the other way around, and you can tell that easily. Shes fascinated by him from the very first encounter to the very last. Its his devotion and live to the dead girl, or maybe, being half of the man she truly goes to love in the future. Dont think he lusts for her, well, shes a young beautiful girl and a dude just cant help checking her out, but everytime he seems to ignore her "love" and advances, we think its due to Alice, but it was indeed more than that, his genes kind of recognized her. I thought it was brilliant.

You promised and delivered. I have to say when you said you were gonna cover this after the first two games, I was slightly worried the weird, comedic tone and humor would have aged really poorly, doubly so in an era where the "RPG subverting some expectations of the genre" thing is more prevalent than ever, but it was nice seeing that (save for some jokes and things that have admitedly aged kinda poorly) it largely held up.

I know that's kind of generic for this video, so I'll say something specific: I had no idea Shadow Hearts was a trilogy started by Hiroki Kikuta. That fact blew my mind. I'm really happy to learn to finally learn more about this series after being recommended, but failing to get around to playing, Shadow Hearts II for years. Now I definitely feel I gotta play it one of these days.

It IS a great closure to the series! I'm very glad you made this video (especially as fast as you did, as others have said). Do you gave any interest in making these kinds of videos for "Shadow Hearts: The New World"? ( That opening song is TOP TEIR, alongside greats like "Time's Scar") what about the spiritual successor the creator recently funded on Patreon, "Penny Blood"?
Regardless of whether you cover those two "sequels" (Lenny shows up and continues to be a really good guy) I love your videos and especially the run down memory lane they give me.

my dude. I have played covenant over 5 times now in my life, one of my very first BIG JRPG loves besides final fantasy and KH. This video does it justice so beautifully. I have watched it today when my partner was at work, and since we started playing and forgot for a while, I just showed it to them so we watched it together again. They have an existential crisis right now the way I did when I first played it at 13 years of age and it's truly beautiful to experience. This video is such a masterpiece and will be a big staple in my life from now on. You are doing an amazing job and, genuinely, thank you. Thank you for making it and thank you for your work. We've been together for a while now, but watching this we laughed and cried at lots of points. It's truly beautiful. I can't wait for you to play FTNW and cover it. Again, thank you from the bottom of our both hearts.
