I'm stoked to have joined the Sony Alpha team (!) and I've partnered with them to GIVEAWAY 3 of their newest ZV-1 vlogging cameras. To win: follow @drewbinsky and @sonyalpha on Instagram and comment 2 sentences below on what you'd do with the camera. I'm also including a signed postcard from Venezuela and a 10,000 VZ banknote in each box. Yay!
    ------------
I recently hit the streets of Caracas with my local friends Gabo and Emmanuel to see if we could exchange $100 USD for local Venezuelan Bolivares. At the time when I shot this video, $100 USD was about 170 Million Bolivares, but now at the time of posting, $100 USD is about 300 million Bolivares. The currency has depreciated by almost 100%.
We spent ALL day walking into small shops, bakeries, market vendors (etc) in Caracas and unfortunately, we were only able to exchange $62... Yes, we really did have a backpack full of cash on our backs. It was wild.
The economic crisis in Venezuela is very sad and it's hard to comprehend what's happening. And how fast it's happening. I have empathy for the people here who are suffering to make ends meet, but instead of dwelling on the situation, it's been refreshing to see many of the locals being resilient and optimistic for a brighter future. I made this video to give you a glimpse of real life on the streets of Caracas because I think it's important to give you an honest perspective. I love this city and country with all of my heart - it has the BEST food, hospitality and culture in all of South America 💛💙❤️ If you're still reading this, I want you to know that I love you and thanks for supporting my channel. I pour my blood, sweat tears into making these videos and I hope they are opening up your eyes to the world. Happy Sunday and Mother's Day -- I love you, mom!

Fun facts from a hungarian: after WW2 HU had the biggest hyperinflation, it was absurd. I mean 10^16% (thats 16 zeros) inflation caused denominations that were easier to be written with abbriviated letters than with actual numbers on the paper money itself (largest used note was 21 zeros, and a larger was planned before abandoning the currency) Prices doubled every 16 hours in the worst period during the year long hyperinflation. Of course people like my great grand parents were like "modern problems require ancient solutions" and reverted to barter, city people gave clothes exchange for rural people's food. My grandmother and her siblings worked their assess off with day-to-day jobs and errands in that year as like children (8-12 y olds) and their biggest achievement and "payment" was a goat. Great thing she still lives and told the stories about the war and what it was like when the first world fucked itself up to have third world conditions for a brief time. Lot to learn from history through common peoples eyes.

The Bolivar was nicknamed the South American Dollar, a real power house in the region, silver coins had been in circulation until recently and my interest in coins became a full fledged collection. Venezuelan coins where mostly beautiful nickel coins designed by famed French engraver Barré. As a fun fact, I later lived in Austria, where the Schilling was called "Alpine Dollar" and where commemorative silver coins were in circulation until the 80s.

speaking of. it also happened in minessota, they printed their own paper currency back before the American paper dollar, made so much of it with so many different types, that England sent them a bunch of metal money to help them sort their shit out, they kept the money and printed more notes, so england had to ban them from making notes.

Thanks for making this video and explaining to people the very difficult situation that Venezuela is facing with the hyper inflation. Many middle-class families I know lost large parts of their savings they had in the bank due to this issue. Despite adjustment, their income has lost its real value as well. It basically has made hard working people poorer and the weakest had suffer the most. You can only start to imagine the implications of this situation by watching this video
