    60s were a crazy period for Soviet aviation industry. With Stalin’s death and Khrushchev’s missile obsession, almost every bureau in the USSR was working on a daring new design that would accommodate new military aviation doctrine and get those sweet government funds.
    And then there were young or inexperienced engineers fresh out of college, not being able to participate in huge projects because of the time restraints and importance of success, who just sat around.
    One of them was Rolan Martirosov, Sukhoi bureau engineer who decided to do something about it and gathered a team of colleagues to work on a completely new design in their spare time.
    Their work started by using the fuselage similar to the one of Su-15 interceptor, with large canards to help with steering and maneuverability mounted on top of D-shaped intakes, however this design didn’t work out and they switched to intake design similar to the one on MiG-25.
    Fuselage would have 4 wings positioned in X shape with integrated fuel tanks mounted at the end of each of the wings and some sort of landing gear or shock absorbers at the bottom.
    Each of the wings would have a rudder that could actually work as both rudder and aileron during the flight and help the pilot steer the aircraft. Additional canards were mounted in the front of the air intakes to help with the stability during flight.
    Aircraft would’ve been powered by 2 engines, which would provide enough power for vertical take off and flight with such an unorthodox design.
    After creating several scale models and completing wind tunnel tests, a team of young engineers prepared all the documentation and had the feel that this could actually work out for them. They decided to present the project and talk to the man himself- Pavel Sukhoi.
    When first presented with the idea, Sukhoi was hesitant, since he clearly understood the situation in the country, how the budget was overstretched with different bureaus developing new planes and helicopters and that it would be very hard to have government funds diverted to such ambitious project, but he was clearly happy with the initiative and the success of the project so far, so he decided to approve the project for further development and help the young team in their struggle.
    Specialists from Ilyushin bureau also reviewed and gave positive feedback for the ideas and some funds were acquired to be pumped into further development of the project. He advised them however to go under the radar and continue work on their own as much as they could before presenting the aircraft to the government.
    With newly received funds and support from the Pavel Sukhoi himself, the team pushed forward!

    Very cool looking, but it would have had the same problems every other iteration of the concept had, transition and landing. In order to land you have to kill your forward velocity, but that means no aerodynamic lift, which means all that keeps you in the air is thrust. A tricky manuever to pull off without computer management and thrust vectoring. Also not ideal when you're coming in low on fuel and shot up.

    • @HellbirdIV
      @HellbirdIV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Ironically the solution might be to go full X-Wing and have the ability to alter the wing geometry. Allowing the plane to fold its bottom wings upward to a fully horizontal position would allow for normal landing with landing gear.

    • @dannypipewrench533
      @dannypipewrench533 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Then, perhaps we use it as a space plane, not a fighter. Strap a booster stage below it to help it get up, and then let it rely on its own power. Then let it glide back through the atmosphere, with enough fuel to perform the vertical landing procedure.

    • @Horesmi
      @Horesmi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I thought the four tanks at the tips had their own jet engines. An expensive and heavy solution, but it at least gives the pilot direct maneuverability at hover.
      Would still be a nightmare without modern computerized control system. Vertical takeoff is not meant for humans.

    • @masoodjalal1152
      @masoodjalal1152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with them is it is harder to land them. Even if you land it on a platform, it will have to pe precise without you looking at it. In case of emergency or any technical issue, it would be hard to land.
      In the future if we are in space, It will be a feasible concept, to just launch off of a platform and then there is no direction in space so it will be easy to fly them. Landing will again be an issue, But hey SpaceX is landing large landers, that are much taller and heavy so it will not be hard to make such planes land.
      For a space Force, they are a good design, you don't need wings in space. But on earth, it will be hard to justify such a complicated plane, when planes can land virtually anywhere because of STOL capabilities.

    This reminds of a scene from the Oats Studio short film "Firebase." At about the 13:00 mark a traumatized character recalls an alternate dimension where Soviet fighters assault his base. They land vertically and deploy flamethrowers. Not practical or realistic, but nightmarish nonethless. It's essentially a depiction of exotic Soviet fighter jet technology on acid. The Sukhoi Shkval vaguely reminds me of it

    Something initially confused me - you said the things on the ends of the wings were fuel tanks / pods with landing shock absorbers. But animation made the back of the pods visually similar to the early jet engines, like those at 5:15, and they produce what looks like exhaust at 0:58 (its probably just wing tip turbulence...but it doesnt help that it seems coming out of the back of a circular aperture of the pod). Took a moment to figure out wtf I was looking at. I was thinking - why would a fighter have extra thrusters in addition to main engines, its not babylon 5, lol.

    According to a lot of you the most obvious issue with this design is the difficulty in landing - considering on paper it would rely completely on generated thrust to complete a landing (not ideal for combat aircraft that get damaged and run out of fuel) Humor me if you will, but I wonder how such a design would function if the vertical landing was achieved via ultra durable parachute (s) ? Perhaps one in tandem with thrust. I'm not sure how strong we can make them but if I do recall one of the USA's reusable spacecrafts use them to slow down in landing, so at very least we have the technology to make parachutes that can take extremely high stresses. But what do I know, somebody roast my idea on this I'd love to see the discourse.

    Tesla was not the first to design vertical takeoff vehicle, that would be Leonardo DaVinci.

    Rejecting the design was almost certainly the right decision, as this is one of those ideas that looks great in theory but never really manages to translate well into active service and functionality.
    But the team definitely deserved their rewards and careers, it was a very well done attempt.

    Treibflügel, not Triebflügel ;)
    Treibflügel means pushing wings. Triebflügel would be something like urge or instinct wings.
    I know, ist not easy for an non fluent german speaker. :)

    Perfect work all the time! But I just noticed someone just uploaded your video to a Chinese video website with dubbed voices(scripts are completely the same as yours)and claim it's their original so they can make a profit, do you need further information?

    I wonder if they could make it work now with computers compensating for landings. It is still a great idea for carriers and places without runways.

    The Soviet design looked a great deal more capable & realistic than the Pogo. The 60's were well into the jet age. Turbo props in military aviation were already thing of the past.

    I kinda wonder, what would a landing pad be made of, to put up with the extreme heat coming from those engines. Pavement would get soft and cement, it woudn't get soft, but it wouldn't survive a landing ether.

  • @Alexcarter27
    @Alexcarter27 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It certainly looks cool but an aircraft with four wings means that it would have a greater radar signature and make the plane heavier, not to mention more aerodynamically unstable. Even with modern avionics and computers, this aircraft wouldn't be able to hold it's own against some of the more modern aircraft like the F35 or even non stealth fighters like the Eurofighter, Dassault Rafale or Gripen. Still I would love to have seen it in action nevertheless, just to see how well it would have performed.
