The Mike Goolsby Show: Analyzing Notre Dame football after Miami (OH) game | Riley Leonard, more
#notredamefootball #GoIrish
ND cannot look at anything beyond Louisville. Louisville is the season. They need to concentrate on doing every assignment & beating their man on each play as it comes.
I’m with you!
Agreed 100%. Game by game but I have a feeling we're gonna see the boys fired the hell up for Louisville after that shocker last year. It won't be Purdue 66-7 but I think we beat L'Ville bad.
Irish can't look past anyone ever, that mentality is imperative for every game ND plays, we are gonna get & always have gotten every teams best shot, every opponent is to be treated like their frkn Georgia or Alabama, if we do this ND will be a dynasty
@@firebirdrivera8478 That may be asking the impossible of a group of college guys.
Based on our first four games, Notre Dame should get absolutely crushed by Louisville. It doesn’t mean they will because they do have some talent that may rise to the occasion. It’s what they do, they lose games they shouldn’t & they beat teams they shouldn’t. It’s a vey strange program and they refused to go after a top five coach in the nation. God bless Marcus because he’s a wonderful guy, how can you not like him but the truth is he’s a DEI higher. Michigan just made the same mistake!
My bottom line is this: I want a quarterback playing quarterback, not a running back. We have Love, Price, and others to tote the rock, so our quarterback doesn’t need to have anywhere near the carries of our best running backs. Also, if the coaches need to dumb down the playbook in an effort to coddle a senior quarterback who is getting paid huge money, he simply isn’t getting it done and isn’t the guy.
Watching the tape now. Riley made some huge strides this game…
@@mikegoolsby2731made huge strides but still has to make a 1st and 10 throw on a simple out to get us 2nd and 5 instead of 10. We can’t constantly be third and 8.
@@mikegoolsby2731 With the mid range pass, yes. Overall, he is still leaving a bunch of points on the field due to inconsistency, not reading the defenses properly, and a lack of confidence. The game plan was clearly to have Riley take some shots down the field without having to read the field, which he did. Because of an overmatched defensive secondary he got away with 3 PI’s despite one of those throws being late and underthrown, and another being questionably long. His touchdown pass was thrown very well, but the receiver was also open by at least a few steps, so that is a throw any college quarterback in any division should be able to make.
I’m not criticizing Riley for his abilities, because he is physically able to make all of the throws, and in practice he probably does. The simple fact is that when it’s game time, his passing game goes down the tubes, and the same thing happened all of last year as well.
The bottom line is he is a work in progress. That being the case, develop your other works in progress who have eligibility remaining after this season rather than spending so much time and risking being eliminated from the playoff picture after 5 weeks for a guy who is gone after this season.
And to your comment about Freeman, yes, he is the one to ultimately blame for the quarterback situation, but unfortunately, RL is the one on the field getting paid big money to be the guy, so he will naturally take some heat.
Always keeping it real Goolsby! Great show.
i like the Goolsby show ....his takes are way better than everyone else an explains it easier lol
@@shawnsingleton9808appreciate you
I agree with Goolsby on our run defense. Hopefully we can fix it before Saturday. Louisville ran it down our throats last year.
Goolsby bringing up "Kodak Black" and "Getting Crunk/Turnt" got me gooooodd lololol. Also, I love that the faces for the thumbnail change depending on how they feel.
Leonard’s running has been highly effective & probably helps the running backs because the D has to divide its attention to account for the QB.
Then at the same time the receivers are getting pissed because their QB can’t get them the ball.
Great program
If I'm Jadarian Price, I'm begging to get Angeli in there. Price has 26 carries this season to Leonard's 46.
Great show. Glad someone else noted Bowen’s key possessions
GO ND!
i don't think there is anything i could care less about than how freeman is in front of a microphone lol
Did you see the body language of Marcus when asked about the QB. It said it all !!!
Leonard committed to ND early in December and Denbrock came in late December. I know a lot goes on behind the scenes, but do you think Denbrock had any say in actually wanting Riley or if he was a good fit for the system? If he came in earlier in the process he might of had a different opinion on who to go after in the portal.
This is an underrated comment. His arm is not what Denbrock needs. The OL injuries and youth playing poorly is compounding this, at least from a pass pro standpoint.
this might be the best take so far. freeman likes to protect leonard by blaming the play calling
also freeman seems like an "execute better" type of coach as opposed to those coaches who would chuck the playbook out of the window when things aren't working
for reference, go listen to his comments after the NIU game
Thank you guys for a great show Mike G gave good information on the team as a whole
My Question: What ND Football team is going to show up for Louisville? Wanna guess?
If Georgia, Alabama., and OSU can get up for a 3:30pm game, so can ND. All about motivation. Need that eye of the tiger look. Eye of the tiger.
Louisville will win if ND plays like they did against Miami OH. This game will determine whether they have a chance at 11-1, or if they go 9-3 or even 8-4. It should be treated as a revenge game from last year.
People are upset because their transfer quarterback, being paid big money SUCKS!!!!
I think people are also sick of an ‘elite’ school like this with all the money and power in the world consistent putting out mediocre shit on the field.
Who were the other QB options? I think we should have had minchey ready this year
Dear Mike T Singer, Tim Hyde and Mike Goolsby: I have been a fan of your shows for quite some time. You are spot on with your collective analyses. And Coach Tim Hyde, your expertise on the Xs and Os is quite impressive. But what I fail to understand is why not one of you has picked up on Coach Freeman's dilemma of character. Mr. Goolsby has been aiming at his pre-game and post-game comments as WTF. I get it. That's drilling toward where I am going with this rant. I remember when he greeted his team after Jack Swarbrick hired him. He was visibly stoked, energetic and motivational. Before the big game in College Station, that coach returned. He was riling his team up. Exhorting them. Challenging them. You were on enemy territory and you had to do a Hakka like us polynesians do in the enemy's face. It got our team pumped against the A&M fans jeering at them in the tunnel. Maybe Coach Freeman even threw some obscenities in. This is true grit. This is the adrenalin pump that players love about him. That's what gives the team a shot in the arm, or as Mr. Goolsby pointed out -- that slap on the helmet of a teammate to get them riled up. But Coach Freeman rarely goes back to that skin. The only exceptions I have noted is when someone on offense or defense screws up with a penalty like Adon Schuler. I think the reason Coach Freeman has volatile results is because he doesn't radiate that same excitement all the time. He's trying to be Mr. Stoic. But this persona is flat. Devoid of Energy. Too cerebral. And that's not a role he can sell. Even the greats, like Knute Rockney, Ara Parsegian and Lou Holtz were energizers on gamedays. The kids feed off of that kind of coaching. Especially in those day games that Mr. Goolsby says are an Achilles heel for players that are tired and need that emotional pump up. It always costs ND with the frustrating and sluggish starts in Q1. For years our hated rival USC had a dynamo of a coach in Pete Carroll. You may not endorse his sideline antics, but I also as a former player and fan was always thrilled to see him running up and down the sidelines when someone got a pick, recovered a fumble or shut the opponent's offense down to force a punt. He was high-fiving, fist-pumping, even body-bumping his men. And they ate it up and fed off the coach' energy. That man was the best cheerleader in the stadium. And his guys loved him. That's what Notre Dame needs from Coach Freeman. He is young, energetic and vocal when he wants to be. But on every game day at home especially, he becomes this stoic tortoise with no emotion. Well I am not sold. He can't be Jim Tressel, or Nick Saban yet. He's too young and inexperienced for the role of a cerebral, emotionless senior statesman. That's not who he is. No wonder his comments are so lame and disjointed to a game that we just witnessed -- win or lose. He needs to take a long look in the mirror and return to the young, energetic coach full of emotion that he is. Before this season is lost, he needs to reinvent himself on the field. He should give Pete Caroll a call to get some sage advice. Pax et bonum (peace and all good) Major Michael
I’ve talked about this nearly every episode
I don’t understand why anyone cares what Coach Freeman says before the game
Can only speak for myself. I think most coach comments are useless. But when the same theme is repeated more than once, I think it gives a small window into the coach's overall mindset and philosophy.
In Freeman's case, he's now made multiple comments that make his offensive mindset sound extremely conservative/scared to make mistakes, which lines up with what we've seen on the field.
@@travisedwardmillerI wonder why an inferior team can complete all those little 4-5 yard passing plays and we can’t.
Leonard is a new version of Taylor Martinez. Thats just what he is.
A lot of what went on Saturday at least by what I could see coach Martin had at hell of a game plan in the chess match that went on between him and Al golden was classic they set up the run through the past Hector defense off kilter that's why Chuck Martin is a hell of a coach I'll let you guys figure out O'Reilly Leonard
“You go make your own history!” Great thought.
Day games equal the disney environment of college football
however wrong u feel about RL we don’t have the oline to put a slow drop back passer in and say have at it
Kind of a fallacy. If we had someone that could do quick passes and we set up the run, we’d throw deep and keep defenses from stacking the box. But because we can’t really do anything passing wise, the box is stacked
@@Surge308 Absolutely! The lack of an effective passing quarterback puts much more pressure on the O line.
@@Surge308u all did not watch the last 3 quarters?
And we are ranked in top 10 in almost every statistical run category

Fans enjoy watching and following recruited quarterbacks and like Steve, Cj and Kenny and are being cheated of that experience when importing quartetbacks from other schools
Hey Mike, please look at Pendleton in the third quarter after he made one of his false starts. The next two snaps are as follows:
1st: his guy absolutely smoked him and nearly wrecked Riley
2nd: a blitz came to Pendleton’s right and he chose to step outward. Nobody picked up the blitzer. Luckily it was a three step quickie otherwise Riley would be in the hospital.
We are young at OL. I’m not saying he is bad. I’m just saying that my worries are when we go against a quality D line.
Would call the MOH game a good hard game. It was a win but to many its. Gray was beaten on his INT play bc the QB threw a #13 pass, short and intercepted.
It's time to put Angeli in bc we will need a passing QB not a running one.
Agree with Goolsby. Bowen added juice. Would love to see KVA more, less Kiser in my opinion. Secondary has been playing well. Mills has been a disappointment. Dude needs to start pushing people around. Go Irish ☘️
Agree on Mills...I'll take more of Onye.
Mills has been overrated his whole career. Being big does not make you a playmaker. He and Cross have always been out of position. Cross is a penetrating 3-tech and Mills is a NT in college ball. Cross will play 3-tech in the NFL and will thrive.
Goolsby- as a linebacker, who would you rather play against, RL or SA at QB.
You would pin your ear back and go after Steve but Leonard would be bitch to deal with. OC and RL is going to be a problem with Love and Price all schemed in. Receivers are going to have some BIG plays. OLine is the key.
Angelli isn’t the answer
Why not play both? Give it to Leonard in the red zone. Angeli gets us there.
It's not that hard Leonard isn't a QB. Round peg in square hole. Coaches are trying to make it work instead of admitting they are wrong and putting someone else in. Maybe we should try to develop a QB so they don't have to transfer portal every year.
The bottom line is MF has improved the level of talent. He is in his third year as a head coach on any level. Goolsby, we respect your accomplishments, but this shit isn't easy. We haven't won anything since '88. It is a process, give him a chance. Once we get the quarterback position right, we are on our way. I will take MF over BK any day of the week.
Until we get over the academic elitist bullshit and give a path for more talent, it ain’t happening dude. We get like 70% of our players from private schools that cost like 40k a year to go to. It’s no wonder half of them look half asleep every Saturday.
The least those assholes in that institution could do is let fans drink till halftime in the game. That way when we’re sitting there watching aggressively mediocre football we can at least have a buzz for awhile
11-1 with a loss to an NIU team signifies to me they don’t deserve to be top 12. Legit top 12s don’t lose to a 120 ish ranked team. Then NIU got ranked and lost to UB smh. We don’t deserve a spot. Im both a fan and a realist.
I think they should build the team off of their strengths not their weaknesses quit trying to make Leonard throw, Love, Price, RL, RUN,RUN,RUN!!!
WR’s are absolutely better this year than last. They can’t pass the ball to themselves…
The last warm fuzzy I had about Notre Dame football was just after we beat FSU in 1993. Then look what happened the next week against Boston College--National Championship shot to hell...at home nonetheless!!
the fans ,,,,thiers 2 kinds the ones that are ok with this.....then u get the what ppl say arent fans wanting riley benched an freeman fired....riley hasnt shown anything worth 7 figures...freeman i have lost all respect for....his quote we will take what they give us!!!....who says that am i the only one that rubbed wrong
"Oooozing around" LOL! Davie is such a schmuck. I would've loved to have played for him in HS just for the lulz.😂
Sorry about this, may be blasphemy, but been to two ND Friday pep rallies in last ten years and not sure if still do, but would eliminate them - never embraced what I view as fake hyped enthusiasm and really think the players dislike it and doesn’t help with recruits - Goolsby is right on target with the make your own history comments!!
Would like to hear more about Ty Willingham.
Honestly, what the point of trying to climb into Top 12? Riley Leonard is not going beat any Power 5 teams in the playoffs. In fact, they are likely to get humiliated.
Beat Louisville and there’s a chance of winning out. I believe it’s possible to make playoffs but that’s about it. I don’t see ND beating a top playoff team. There’s always next year. GO IRISH!
Story of our life. Ope there’s always next year to get throttled in the postseason! I can’t be the only one getting sick of it
@@Surge308 always next year x36
So what if another team is 11-1 and there loss came to a top 25. You gonna slot ND and stop another team from getting in who lost to a better team then NIU?
@@brentmckenzie2793ND is the ultimate propaganda machine. Feels like continuing to vote for a political group that just screws ya over and over
The whiniest fan base ever. I’m Irish, Catholic. I’ve followed Georgia and Alabama for years. Is it lack of a conference? A chip on the shoulder? Never seen fans so negative.
We are tired. We are always in the bubble of being good and somehow never are. I'm not sure the two most dominant teams of the past decade are a good comparison.
I am getting so sick of hearing that joining a conference is the answer to all our woes. What the hell is so special about a conference, and how would that improve the problems with our coach or our team's athletes?
Glad your not a whiner. Thanks for the assessment. I’m allowed to complain. It’s a free country and you can feel free to ignore the real problems in this program. A real team doesn’t lose to NIU at home.
play off this team is not going to any play off forget it start to fix this fire freeman
Yes. The usage of Riley Leonard as much as Jeremiah Love is of note. But is that not the reason you got him in the first place. He was successful at duke because of his out of the box scheme. You can’t traditionalize Leonard in a system. Look right or wrong this is what we have. This is 100% on freeman
But it looks like there is a benefit to having Leonard run the ball 15 times a game because it is impossible to defend( if he can keep a D honest by throwing over 100 yards)
He is not a system qb
He hasn’t faced a strong defense yet. Saturday will be his first real test, so time will tell.
What I do know is that Freeman is putting all of his eggs in the RL basket. If it works, Freeman is okay. If RL can’t handle Louisville Saturday, our playoff aspirations are over, and Freeman’s job as a head coach is massively at risk. Louisville will be ND’s biggest game in years for those reasons.
Fire freeman wtf are we doing here
ND sold their soul...
Get rid of Riley Leonard, Steve Angeli is a better passer & gives us a balanced offense. Stop telling me we have great running backs because they never get the ball and I haven’t been impressed with the carries they’ve had.
Lastly, it’s time for a new coach, Marcus is over his head !
Riley Leonard should be treated as a semi-pro football player. He's getting a lot of NIL $$ and he is in his last year of collegiate football. He should not be on a learning curve.
ND rankng is correct now. They are a top 17 team. They are not a top 5 team. Far from being elite.
Agreed. As it stands unless a team in the top 15 loses a bad one we are not deserving of a 12 team playoff spot.
The environment inside Notre dame stadium has gotten worse over the years . U have some chick in between screaming into the microphone that u can’t understand trying to “pump” up the crowd . Then u have this fake DJ pretending to spin records … the fans barely cheer . It’s a zero
Amp atmosphere especially this year …
this team is awful
Not true. Defense is great! RBs great! WRs average. Offensive line, depleted. QB’s RUNNING skills, GREAT. It’s the QB’s PASSING SKILLS that are AWEFUL.
Okay, let's look at two guys, CJ Carr and Deuce Knight. These are two kids Freeman has recruited. These dudes look NOTHING like Riley Leonard. The RL portal pickup may have been a call made by someone over Marcus Freeman's head. He seems frustrated, like there's nothing he can do. He's a good evaluator of talent. Highly unlikely he wanted Leonard.
ND would have to win out, and chaos happen from top 10 schools. At this point, they won't beat USC.
Good lord get rid of the "hype girl" and DJ. Samething over and over all game long. I oerfer the Band playing but I do agree to pump in other music but mix up the beats.
look at riley lenorards eyes saturday.....if they are glossy hes lost...he had same look in his eyes vs niu an now miami
I didn’t see that at all.
@@edszewczyk really he looked lost first quarter
4:41 at least Drew Pyne could throw the ball....
At the end of the day, Pyne was 8-2 as a starter. One of the loses was against Caleb Willians and the USC trojans. We really should've developed him better. Just sayin....
@@AnthonyWrightFilmsthe other lost was that head scratcher against Stanford. Pyne had a great record and was undervalued as a player.
@@MattBooher-ng4qi He really was! They did him so wrong.
He was a great leprechaun too. Riley is too damn tall for it to be accurate. Gotta have QBs that can’t see over the pocket
There not going anywhere if they don't fix that passing game when we play USC we have to get better. That game is for the playoffs.
Michigan just beat USC and only passed for 32 yards
Leonard’s running has been highly effective & probably helps the running backs because the D has to divide its attention to account for the QB.
Makes it easy on the D. Stack the box and tackle well. Against a legit top 12 D we are smoked.
