    This is what makes Edge one of the greats. He doesn’t need to play long guitar solos to be noticed. He can take simple melodies and turn them into gold. He’s unselfish. He’s the perfect fit for u2.

      On the production side, Eno and Lanois are a perfect fit too. Lanois is a quietly assertive person and this understated musical genius to the point where the things he comes up with seem instinctive. His whole approach to record production is the studio isn't just a bunch of gear in a room, its an instrument in and of itself.

    I am now 54 years old. And I have been consciously listening to music since I was 10 years old. I developed my taste in music when I was about 14. Since then, I have loved pop music on the one hand and classical music on the other, especially baroque music. (Techno trance too, but that's another story...)
    When I heard ‘With Or Without You’ by U2 for the first time in 1987, it was an awakening experience for me: Edge's ‘Infinite Guitar’ in this song was a sound of angels from heaven for me.
    Since then, I think that ‘With Or Without You’ is the best pop song in music history. And if I were forced to take one song with me on the much-cited desert island, it would be ‘With Or Without You’.
    Thank you U2 for this brilliant song.

    There's a reason that The Edge was included in the Documentary "It might get loud" along with Jack White and Jimmy Page. He's an innovator. He did things that no one else was doing, and he made a statement with it. One of the most underrated guitarists in the 80's and 90's hands down. It's a shame that his impact on the industry is so late in being realized.

    Say what you will about U2 or The Edge, but the outro of With or Without You is just one of those perfect moments in music; the kind that just speaks. It's gorgeous. Let us not forget how much of a hand Daniel Lanois had in crafting how this record sounds too. He used the studio and the band as his own 'instruments' to get the end result.

      ***** You have no clue and do not even know half of the solos he has played including blues solos. The Edge not much of a guitar player? You are a f'king moron. Are you friggin kidding me? He has done extremely technical and long solos in live concert shows. Zoo TV 1993 "Bullet the blue sky" solo is one of the examples. He chooses not to be like every other nobody guitarist because all of them damn sound the same. He has been ranked one of the greatest guitarist and won numerous awards because he can play like majority of the guitarists out there, but no one else can come up with the signature and unique sounds he comes up. He pioneered the looping that so many guitarists these days now cannot live without. He has always been clear he got bored with playing long drawn out solos that sound like every other guitarist early on in his career. He started to become an experimental guitarist and went the way of creating innovative ways to incorporate guitar into the landscape of the song and to better convey the emotions. He is not a guitarist for the sake of being guitarist. That is why all of the guitarists

      ***** You are just a troll hater who has no f'king clue what he is talking about. Your ignorance and blind one-sided lack of U2's music anthology is simply mind blowing. He is regularly ranked in the top 30 greatest guitarists (once #14 by Los Angeles Times music magazine). He can play just about any other musician's solos , but the other guitarists can never come up with the signature, experimental tunes he does. What the f'ck are you even here? GTFO! Yes, a**hat I am sure The Edge uses pedals and effects when he does ACOUSTIC GUITAR SOLO that stretched 2 minutes and sometimes 2.5 minutes also has has pedals. He uses no pedals when he did the 2:30 guitar solo in Bullet the blue sky. You are a complete mor*n!

      ***** 100% you have no f'king clue what you are talking about. You came to this video only to talk sh*t. You are the joke of the day. I have seen The Edge do a lengthy impromptu acoustic guitar solo in live concert for "Staring at the sun". There are tons of songs where he plays rhythms and solos without any pedals. It is only for his experimental side where he uses pedals, wah-wah and effects.

      He isn't a shredder, so if you're using that standard then I can't say he is a great guitarist. That's not the way he uses the guitar, though, and it is just a tool. In a band, it can have many purposes. The way he uses it to create songs is pure genius. I don't see many other bands who have been so successful. The magic occurs when the simplicity is just enough to say what 1000 words can’t. Thanks for sharing.

    thats why i love U2's music because of its simplicity and they don't try to show off their individual talent over anybody else, they play as a band. love the cowboy hat too haha

    Incredible song, gives me chills. You could call it a "simple" riff but it evokes a lot of emotion, and that's what good music does!

    It's massive, chiming, jangling, and my fave piece of his what he does in this song. Unbelievably still for me is that I met him once and had about a 15sec conversation around 1992. The sound here I believe was the results of Brian Eno producing the album and the way he can shape sounds. All times I've seen Eno mentioned to them, they say they were hugely admiring, just as I am, of Eno's own musical legacy.

      @Mike yes definitely a few different effects needed to create this guitar sound. Very beautiful results.

    People that hate on The Edge, because he can speak in one note... that takes guitarists hundreds of notes to even remotely accomplish emotionally in a song

    • @vanmalmsteen5918
      @vanmalmsteen5918 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Medalion He's not a great guitar player by any means. Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Al Di Meola, Gary Moore, George Benson, John McLaughlin, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Michael Angelo Batio, and hundreds of other class act guitarists and musicians could smoke his ass. The Edge is 93,000,000 miles from technical proficiency on the guitar as the earth is from the sun and the distant galaxies.

      +Van Malmsteen Not agree .. A great guitarist is not necessary someone who played tousands notes, and have a big technic... It's also someone who play the right note, with the right effect at the right time, and give such an emotion. So The Edge can give another dimension to a song with only 3 notes on the good time :)

    • @Texturas75
      @Texturas75 8 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      +Van Malmsteen Haha. That's exactly the problem: A great guitarist is somebody who transmits emotions to the listener, not someone who is technically proficient. A great musician plays for the song, not for himself!!

    The Edge uses his specially designed "Infinite guitar" on this tune as mentioned on the liner notes on the Album Joshua Tree...it was designed by a Canadian I think but has special circuitry that creates that ..sustainer sound that starts very close to the beginning...to my knowledge it's not a standard "sustainer" sound as special systainer pickups and circuits were fitted in allot of guitars since the 80s and used on tunes like Hysteria by Def Leppard in 1987 ...the Infinite guitar creates a sound more like a repeating feedback sound that's more intense than a standard sustainer which was used by allot of Thrash Metal guitarists back then and others....The Edge also uses this guitar for the live version of "The Unforgettable Fire" since at least live in 1987...

    He is so creative even in the simple little things. For example - listen to the way his pick sounds on the strings. He uses a pick with grit on it designed for better grip, but then he turns it sideways so that the grit catches the string and you hear a little something extra in the texture of the note just from that one small thing. What an artist! 😎👍🙏

    There are certain iconic groups that one can easily recognise just by listening to a couple of riffs of their songs. Meanwhile establishing each band's identity, and propelling their bands to rock immortality. Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page just to name a few. And I believe The Edge could fit in with these legendary musicians also.

    Even that extra scratchiness of the pick against the strings is an Edge sound. He specifically uses a sandpapery pick to get that extra scratch in the sound. What a beautiful mad scientist... 🙏
