    The first I ever heard of Symohony X was when I went to see Dream Theater live and they were the support band. I walked in mid set and there was a Malmsteen looking guy shredding guitar and the singer wailing about Babylon. Next day I bought the Paradise Lost album and spent the rest of the week screaming "WAAAARHAAAAMER OF THE GOOOOOODS BRIIIIING DOWN THE WALLS OF BAAAABYYYYLOOOOOONNNN". Never looked back.

    Yes Death is absolutely a progressive metal band. Starting with Human it was clear Chuck was interested in playing around with musical concepts and wasn't doing a straight Death Metal continuation to their first 3 albums and embraced more and more of the experimenting side. I mean he invited half of Cynic to the band and Cynic was already a legend as a jazz fusion death metal band.
    While Sound of Perseverance and Control Denied were undeniably prog metal albums, most of the building blocks came through ideas Chuck developed in Death through most of the 90s.

    • @joeschmidt676
      @joeschmidt676 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bam3666 I do agree that Palimpsest was the best album of 2020. I recommended Volition because it's my personal favorite still, and, in my opinion, it is the easiest of their albums to get into if you've never heard their music before. It is also their heaviest album with the most bite in regards to the metal genre. Idk if it's bc Chris Adler was on drums for that one, but the thing I like about PTH is each one of their albums holds a little bit different of a flavor. Palimpsest is their highest production value and best written to date, but from a metal standpoint, I believe Volition holds up better out of the gate.

      Because he’s not prog.

    • @xxxfallenseraphxx
      @xxxfallenseraphxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MilitantOldLady I'd consider him prog / experimental. He's all over the place. What would you classify him as in terms of genres?

    • @MilitantOldLady
      @MilitantOldLady 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xxxfallenseraphxx He does whatever he likes to do but his musical vocabulary is pretty set in it's place. SYL is modern industrial tinged with a new wave of death metal, it's full of blast beats and growls but also MInistry-like samples. His solo stuff is just straight up pop rock, clean sung, not challenging. Then he does those off beat projects like an opera or whatever. It's definitely not prog because it doesn't do anything new or unique. Nobody listened to him and took it from there. No new genre came from him. He does what he does and it's good enough.

    • @xxxfallenseraphxx
      @xxxfallenseraphxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MilitantOldLady that's an excellent explanation and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel like there's not alot of good convo on YT comments and appreciate your elaboration. I'd have to say my understanding was that prog metal was metal that didn't strictly follow traditional song structures / genre devices. I know he does whatever he wants and that's why I always thought of him as a progressive musician, because he's so all over the place and you never know what to expect. I agree that not all of his releases are prog metal (example being the ghost album, which is incredible btw) but I always thought of his heavier material like deconstruction as prog metal. I haven't been up to speed on him in a bit so might need to check out his latest releases.

    • @MilitantOldLady
      @MilitantOldLady 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xxxfallenseraphxx Seeking a standard definition for prog undoes the very definition of what prog is. I wouldn't even call it a genre per-say. Every iconic prog band has developed their unique sound so you can in a way say someone like Nirvana is prog because they sounded like themselves. The moment you set prog in a formula it stops being what the term means, it doesn't progress anymore, it just sets a template to replicate. Devin had the balls to do a lot of different things. The most unfortunate thing with him was what i call "after the fact" fans. People who claim they were there for SYL and loved it SO MUCH and then even he himself said "if everyone loved it so much, how come i made no money?

    Hi guys! This was a pleasure to watch you both so deeply reminisce over your love for the same genre. It's nice to see the connection you have.
    This isn't a genre suggestion but a potential for a future metal morning; Talk about the creation and full journey involved in Solar guitars, from both your perspectives? It's been inspiring to see it grow but would be really nice to see how it all became the way it is through the whole journey. Seeing how you both were involved in it's inception, all in one place, would be a very interesting watch I'd say having been a subscriber from almost the start but never really seeing all the behind the scenes stuff.

Magical melodies and atmosphere out of this world. They’re a hidden gem. Hi Ola and Louise! Suggestion for shows after you are done with sub genres. You could pick iconic albums in metal and dedicate 30 minute to talking about it. Discuss the lineup of the band, who wrote the bulk of lyrics, etc. Just a thought. Whatever you do, I will be watching! 🖤🤘🖤🤘

    I remember years ago the guitar magazine "Guitar Techniques " put bands on the attached CD , near the end of the CD I think . Im going to dig those old CDs out and find out if any of them made it in the music scene, or any of the band members made it in a different band. Back then the internet was nothing like it is today. Opeth Live in The Royal Albert Hall is one of my favourite music Vid Gigs .

    So Ola , not only your are a Prog Metal guy that his first favorite band is DT and the second one is Symphony X ( so happy to learn that ) but your girl for life smiles when she listens the debut release of Labrie with DT and also knows the lyrics of DT and Symphony X songs ! So happy for the life you've built man! Honestly! This personally was my favorite episode of these series , since prog metal is my favorite genre since 1994. One question thought, where do Mastodon fit in? Personally I think that they are one of the best prog metal bands out there, making their own mark . Great episode and happy Sunday to you too!

    For future Metal Mornings, maybe you could do a deep dive into an album that you both like (or each like) and cover what you like about it. That would give you room to talk about different metal (or even non-metal) genres, and also tangential stuff (got you through a rough time in life, listened to it for the first time at some crazy party, or whatever).

It was so fresh and new. You had soft sounding beautiful songs to rip your ears off heavier stuff. At that time it was Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I loved Soundgarden and A.I.C. But Pantera and Dream Theater that year changed me. Music is a time capsule to my past. Thats how I can remember past events in my life. Some good. Some not. That Is Whats So Wonderful About Music. Thank You Brother. You put stuff on TH-cam Im watching and Squashing that like button.
