This video is the trailer for ENGRAVING SCROLLWORK - START TO FINISH by Sam Alfano. Available for purchase at Engraving-Videos.com in both DVD and instant download.
Hey Sam, this is Harvey. You know, I've always loved your wok, but had never looked for you on TH-cam(as you know I'm a bit slow). I am amazed by watching you work!
Wow, that looked perfect! Great experience you have shown through this quick video. I have wanted to learn engraving like this for a while now but I lack having much time to try to focus on this subject. Thanks for sharing!
At first I thought you did this by hand and was astonished by the execution. But using a pneumatic machine takes away the whole 'old world' aspect of this art.
As far as I know, Sam was doing it by hand back as far as the early 70's. Sam could do this by hand or with the machine if he wanted to. It's kind of like complaining about a jeweler using a flex shaft. It's not as if the pneumatic machine does all the work for him. If he was using a laser engraving machine I could understand your argument.
as I know artist is a thinker... they think how to do things and they create their own technique of making things like formula, tools, etc and mastered it by their own way... they revolutionize how to do art... if people got the idea that hand carving/engraving tools using sharp rock before metal engraver I bet some people also say "Why use metal/carbide engraver instead of sharp rock?" just like you say about pneumatic vs traditional tools... do you think using non-pneumatic tools would make it the result more artistic than traditional tools?.... one of the most important thing in art is to understand... just like watching Mona Lisa portrait and try to find what special about it, how it made, what the idea behind it and then learn about it.... instead of criticizing Leonardo about the skin color is not real, what paint he use or Mona Lisa is not beautiful compared to modern woman.
Got the scroll drawing video, and after some practice,I can almost engrave scrolls freehand, but still not quite there with the shading. Gonna get thos now.Keep them coming.
What are the minimum tools to start learning with, and where can I find them? I already make chain jewlery and other things for jewlery making, but some engraving would be a nice addition to what I do.
Sam I have done this sort of thing when working with leather carving and comressing to get relief and contrasting heights for later colouring and finish, the work you show here is similar , Do you think that similar technic to leather work can be employed for metals ? Many years ago I would see some beautiful work on Custom Motorcycles but I have never though to try my hand at it. Great Video BTW, I would love to find someone in Australia that teaches this type of thing.
Sam, I want to engrave my tank, fenders and the engine heads on my 1950 Harley. I’m a newbie at this. I engrave smaller things but never bike parts. Where do I begin? Can I talk yo you on the phone or email? I need help.
Sam just uses regular rust-oleum brand flat black paint. After you apply you can use your finger or a piece of regular typing paper to wipe it away. The typing paper keeps from pulling the paint out of the small shading lines like a rag or cloth will do. Just like anything else use a little trial & error to see what fits you. I use this paint and sometimes I use archival ink or gilders paste depending what I am applying it to. Hope this helps.

Adam Sherritt If you don't like it, do it the way you think it should be done instead of criticizing others.
