- You want cost-effective, healthy, and tasty treats for your dog. I get it! It's not cheap using treats when rewarding your dog for good behavior. It can take thousands of treats to build a solid behavior. That's why I wanted to share my latest dog training treat recipe with YOU!
My dogs and our student's dogs LOVE homemade dog treats. They are made with love after all!
RECIPE:
- 3 cooked and ground-up beef livers
- 2 cups grated parm cheese
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup rice flour
- 1 cup liver broth
Boil livers for 5 minutes until done.
Preheat overly to 350
Combine ingredients until smooth, pate like
Smear into treat silicone mat or on a sheet pan
Bake for 10 to 20 minutes for preferred doneness (soft, chewy, crunchy)
Cool for 5 minutes
Pop into an airtight container or other storage
Refrigerate for a week
Freeze for 3-months

I just did the math on the more expensive one, of course much bigger pieces...
But they came out to $0.24 cents each!!! And think of all those preservatives!!! YIKES.
I looked at Milk-bone last night and they have 3 different kinds of preservatives.... no wonder my puppy has an upset stomach if I give more than 2 a day!!!

do you not ever buy store bought dog treats. The ingredients are killing your dog. The same goes for cat treats especially Temptations. I fed Temptations for a year and unfortunately I still give him a few. But I looking up so many articles on cat food and treats I have found it's very hard and expensive to find the proper treats that are good for them

She only has a few left and dehydrated dog treats she naturally could not chew! I love your recipe and will add some canned pumpkin maybe now and then! THANKS AGAIN! I can train her with something HEALTHY and not so EXPENSIVE!! You rock!!

Ok so I finished making the treats and my dog is OBSESSED with it them! I have never seen him that obsessed with food before unless it’s straight up hot dog but this is much healthier and cheaper! Over 1,000 treat for only a few bucks!

What was ur recipe?
I get the Stewart's freeze dried liver treats, but a softer chew during training works nest for my dog so he doesn't get so distracted. Freeze dried is naturally going to cost more than these treats because it is an all meat, single ingredient. But for training, I'd have no problem giving these to my dog.

So glad I found this video! I bought a dot mat and made a ton of these treats (with oat flour). My dog is small so I love having already-tiny treats that I don't need to cut or break up. I try to limit how much cheese he eats though so I will play around with the recipe so I can use less. This video has inspired me to try other homemade recipes. There are some downsides for me: First, the need to refrigerate--I like to keep my treats handy in containers throughout my house, which I can't do with these. Second: they bounce and roll! If I toss them they sometimes wind up far from my dog so I have to adjust my technique LOL. Tips: **An offset spatula makes spreading and leveling a lot easier. The mixture stuck to a rubber spatula. **I cooked the liver from frozen. It's harder to get the wrapper off but the liver itself is much less gross this way. **My treats did not pop right out like in the video--I think cooking them longer or cooling them more helps, but I"ll need to confirm. But even with it taking a while to pop out all the treats, it was still worth it--I have so many treats now in the freezer! Thank you!

I have six dogs and the cost of treats every month was getting expensive. They love these treats so much and it's perfect for training them. I'm going to add more flour with the extra batter to make a dough and make them cookies!! they're going to love it.

This is awesome thank you so much! I just got a Shiba and have lots of training to do. I also dread having to buy treats from the store. So when I saw that silicone sheet I knew this is what I had to do. I really like that you can make them yourself, Knowing the ingredients and being able to make the tiniest portions too

If you are looking to reduce salt you might want to leave out.
Do you think dogs with pancreas inflammation can digest these? I'm mainly concerned about the broth, if there's not too much fat. The recipe sounds tasty though and I would love to try it out!
I would worry. You can use a lower fat protein.
I love the idea of cutting up the liver and just using that. I would only be using it for my neighbour's dog and would hesitate to give her flour or anything she doesn't normally eat. I'm keen to work with her though to stimulate her mind. I definitely wouldn't want to give her pieces of sausage which I've seen people advocate on TH-cam - too many unknown ingredients.
I need to find a large size mold for my large dogs. This is a great idea! I've tried making treats spread out on cookie sheet but they do not bake evenly.
They do make larger dot molds and other shapes. I found them on Amazon. Search Silicone mold.

@@tornadopup9782 I've not cooked duck for mine, but they love store bought duck treats. Chicken is a great option. Sometimes I just get the canned kind.
That is a lot of liver! Be careful folks. While liver has nutrients dogs need in moderation, like Vitamin A and Copper, you can over do it; especially if your dog is getting a significant portion of their diet through rewards. Ground chicken, beef, turkey etc can be substituted. Never fully trust the internet (that includes this comment lol) Always follow up with your own research! Otherwise, this is a great idea!

in the video the bag says its 16oz for 4 slices, so that works out to be 12oz for 3 slices so I'm going to go with that as I cant get that brand here, fingers crossed it works! :)

I've tried this recipe three times. First time, I just smeared the mixture across a cookie sheet about 1/4-inch thick but during cooking, the mixture blistered up so I wound up with two thin layers. The dogs liked it but it was a bit of a hassle to handle. Second and third times, I used the blue 468-cavity silicone mold. The video skips straight from beginning to smear the mixture onto the mold with a spatula to a perfect, fully-loaded mold but I found that a rubber spatula wound up pressing the mixture into the mold, then sucking it right back out again. A kitchen scraper worked great, though. Held at a very shallow angle, the scraper forced the mixture into the cavities and simultaneously scraped the top of the mold clean. Unfortunately, when done, the treats are about the size of chocolate chips; not the best size for handing off to my big dogs without getting my fingers nipped. It was also something of a hassle getting the cooked treats out of the mold, especially when cooked to a softer consistency - It took nearly a half-hour to punch all 468 softer treats out of the mold one-by-one. Given the hassle, tiny treat size, and mess, I'm probably going back to storebought while I re-think the DIY approach.
Use pastry bag and make nice long rope** on flat baking sheet then pizza cutter to quickly cut across before baking
Will give you the right size easy to handle treats !
Read the ingredients list on store-bought treats. Look up how many of them are carcinogenic and detrimental to your pet’s health.

Good replacement. I would start with half a pound to see if that gets you the best consistency once cooked and made into a paste. Let me know how it goes.
So glad you asked this. The recipe calls for three beef livers (which weight about 10lbs each), but I guess she means three slices of whatever size are in the Skylark package she shows on the video. I know I can find chicken livers at Walmart, not so sure about packages of Skylark calf liver!

So before you make it. You throw the liver in some water and boil it ? Is there a specific reason you don't just use the raw liver? Or is it better to boil it
Great question! It's easier and less gross to grind up for the molds. Plus I know all ingredients are properly cooked.
Does the size of the dog effect on the size of the treat? I have a 2.5yrs old Rottweiler over 110lbs. Idk if he have chance to taste it before he swallow it 🥲😅
❤ Big Rotties are great! These might get lost in his mouth, too. I'd use the recipe on a baking sheet so you can cut to size and thickness.

depends on how long you bake them. 15-17 minutes for softer treats and 20-22 minutes for crunchy.

I would just eyeball it to be honest. 8 to 12 oz

I'm not sure how.
Dehydrator will remove majority of the water left in the treat making it shelf stable like homemade beef jerky and freeze drying of course is another method. if you choose to get one in the future that would make everything have an even longer shelf life of up to 25 years. Oh I do want to mention once you dehydate till it's brittle to the touch it won't go bad it'll just become stale which means it's still edible but doesn't taste good and some of the nutrients is gone. But if you keep it in an airtight container stale ness won't be an issue either. I hope this helps.

How did you trim your dogs nails
I have a variety of ways depending on the dog. You might want to check out my nail care playlist. You can use a scratch board for really worried dogs, dog nail clippers (or even cat ones for little dogs), and a dremel. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

So, I had bought a pound of liver and I believe that the package she showed in the video was a one pound package, which according to the package contained "4 liver slices". I had the same question and to confirm, I looked up the weight of a beef liver and found, through online sources that "1 beef liver" weighs 10 to 15 pounds! Clearly she did not use 30 pounds of liver, so I concluded she used 3 of the four slices (i.e. 3/4 of a pound of raw liver). I used that quantity and is worked fine.

I feel like I have done psychological damage to my poor puppy for having the smell of the cooking treats torturing the poor little guy. He was literally pacing around with his nose high in the air as he could get it, just sniffing away.

My senior male Curly's are long. Thankfully the other three are pretty well maintained. When I first got Terriers I didn't know to keep them short you were supposed to clip or file weekly. Did you know that?

has anyone else noticed that in all these training videos they use large dogs. 99% of them use German Shepherd's. German Shepherd's are the easiest dogs to train. You can train them to do anything in five minutes unless you got an idiot. There are idiot dogs. But my point is when their head is that your waist high it is so easy to walk along and give them a treat . I want to see training videos of little dogs because you have to bend over to give them a treat and they jump up to try to get it. Little dog or a bouncy bouncy. Not saying you're stupid but it's hard to bend over and do things with them without them wanting to jump up
Training is the key word
When training do the most essential first. Come, sit, wait. Then praise. Then slowly treat.
There is a method to the madness
My puppy learned very early wait at door for towel if wet by rain, even wipe feet with towel
He came in slightly damp and brought the towel to me on his own.
Pick your battles and go forth with confidence
