WHAT WENT WRONG?! iPad Air 5 Long-Term Review

  • Are there build quality issues with the iPad Air 5? The iPad Air 5 hasn’t gotten the warm welcome that most iPads get, and that may come as a surprise considering that Apple is now offering the same M1 chip they used in the iPad Pro, in the $600 iPad Air. So what went wrong here?
I’ve been using the iPad Air 5 for 2 and a half months now and I also got some interesting results when I tested the build quality and strength of this iPad. Please don’t try what I did with your own iPads, I don’t want yours to get damaged, and I only did these things for testing purposes - so here’s everything you need to know about the iPad Air 5.
Overall, it’s important that we look at this iPad from 2 angles: the first, is someone who’s a prospective iPad user - meaning, they either don’t have a tablet at all; or they have a tablet from another brand and they’re thinking of buying an iPad.
The second angle is someone who already has an iPad and is thinking of upgrading.

Man, I am tired of these click bait video titles. "WHAT WENT WRONG?!" implies something is wrong with the device, or worse than the predecessor. Yet you do not address this really at all or come up with any major complaints. Your "what went wrong section" was 15 seconds at the end and you said some BS about storage? It is pure click bait. Seems like the video is now just an excuse to get clicks for product brand deals. Respect your viewer, show some integrity.

I did a similar test and found wildly varying results. At my local Apple Store I simply picked up the iPads with my hands and found that almost all of the 5th gen iPad Air display units had a tangible creaking or clicking on the back. This wasn't even intentionally applying any pressure. Interestingly enough, my personal iPad Air 5th gen doesn't exhibit any creaking and nor did any of the other display models in store (tested the 6th gen Mini, both sizes of the iPad Pro, and the 9th gen base model iPad). I went to a different store and repeated the test but found that the majority of them didn't creak, with only a small percentage carrying the same issue.
Throughout the test I also recorded the serial numbers of every iPad tested and couldn't find any correlation with manufacturing site or date/batch of manufacture to the creaking issue.
I mentally divided the iPad into a 3x3 grid and tested which region creaked the most and found that the creaking tends to be more prevalent on the middle-left of the iPad (when held screen-up with the camera at the top orientation). This also happens to be where the battery is located and my theory is that the creaking could be the battery adhesive not sticking properly to the inside of the back case and the battery become momentarily unstuck. Given that the Apple Store demo units always have their screen brightness turned all the way up and the screens never turn off, it would make sense that the iPads could get a little warm and weaken the adhesives. It doesn't explain why this issue doesn't seem happen on the other iPad models though.

My Ipad Air review (after one month) . First off, my needs were:
    1. A general tablet with some staying power for years to come. Use for internet, books, streaming, app games (havent tried out cloud gaming yet).
    2. Something I could mark up documents with, highlight key areas in reseach articles (peer reviewed stuff) and jot down handwritten notes
    3. A laptop replacement for when I am on the go, being able to write and type extensivly. for a few hours at a time.
So the decision was made to get the ipad this year, and then the mac mini (hopefully next year with m2) next year. I got the apple magic keyboard and going to get the apple pencil 2. I come from the ipad 6 with apple pencil 1. I also have the 256 gb memory version. I realize that could have been a ipad pro for 50 more, but half storage. I aslo realize that i could have had an mac book air or pro but would only help with 3, not with 1 and 2.
So..how has it done over the last month?
    1. GREAT- I dont notice the difference in pro motion. I came from ipad 6, and i cant see much difference between iphone 12 (what i have) and the ipad air. I just tried Diablo Immortal tonight, watched Ted Lasso, listened to music and entertained myself at a coffee shop while waiting on family memeber at an appointment. ZERO Complaints.
    2. ALMOST GREAT, EXTREMELY GOOD. I am not a content creator, so my needs are a bit different . Does this ipad store tons of pdf documents downloaded from researcher websites? Yes. Is it snappy , going back and forth between them, including large data tables? Yes. Does the pencil work great for making notes and highlighting? Yes. Even the limited multi tasking is PERFECT for backtracking citations. What keeps it from being perfect? Lack of chrome extensions hampers citation management software
    3. Good, but could be better. So the magic keyboard does work, but takes some getting adjusted to. Its snappy and responsive, but on the 11 inch version, some of the keys feel a bit cramped around the edges. I have to slow down my typing a smudge, but can still crank out a few pages an hour. I love the trackpad. I do know that excel and word work great off the apps for me, and google docs does what it needs to do. R studio cloud based seems to do most of my statistical analysis needs. I wish I could do SPSS or STATA, but it looks like i need to wait to i have my mac mini for that.
I feel that once i have the mac mini, the combo will be perfection.
So...whats my verdict? If this is your only device, you can get away with it, if your work load is no more than emails, documents, spreadsheets and PDFs. You will be able to have all that AND have a great tablet. This is super important if you find yourself doing work outside of a computer desk. Its portable and slim, good prices, fast and can be fun and good for work. If you need something more, you will have to determine if you want to.
    a) ditch some things for convience and get a macbook. You lose tablet funcitonality, but (for researchers) you can do it all on a laptop. This is good if you are okay with not marking up books and research papers on them, instead keeping hand written notes or printing them out and having physical copies.
    b) add something else to plug the gaps for when you need them. For me this is the mac mini.
The only thing i have not tried it yet is on zoom calls. I have my old lap top. How does that work in anyones expereince?

Thank you for discussing these concerns on the iPad Air 5. When I was started doing some pre-purchase comparisons between iPads in late March/early April 2022, I did come across some feedback and reviews from customers who had purchased the iPad Air 5 which mentioned the build quality issues you covered. I decided to buy a new iPad Air 4 instead in Mid April 2022, had to go for the 256GB storage option.
I was upgrading from an iPad Mini 4 which I've had for 5 years, so it's still a big leap forward. I figure that the Air 4 had been out for much longer, and many reviewers, including you, had given the Air 4 nothing but praise and thumbs up. We buy what works for us, and thank you for your reviews on the Air 4, that helped in my decision-making process as well.

I’ve survived with 32gb on a 6 gen for more than 3 years, a lot of photos, some data heavy apps, really never struggled for space as you can sync in iTunes to reduce system data, uninstall and reinstall apps to increase storage, idle apps or just remove them until you need them. None of that is troublesome to do. Having said that I do have the air 5 with 256gb just because I never had more storage before so I probably won’t have to think about it. But even if you do have to think about it, there are easy solutions.

the Air 5 has the same casing as the air 4, because each and every year, the price for manufacturing those specific casings goes down and down. That's why the iPhone SE is able to remain soo cheap, but still able to give people the full powered modern performance, on par with the iPhone 13 and ipad mini 6th gen.
The same is done here, its meant to be a more budget version of the iPad Pro, having the M1, and 8GBs of ram for those who want to spend a little less. Especially since the 120hz isn't entirely useful for everything on ipads.
I'm not even debating that "YOU SHOULD TOTALLY BUY THIS IPAD!!!!" no, more like it still has value like the other ipad models. Even if you're on some ipad air 3rd or 4th gen, maybe some older ipad pro. For me personally, I would upgrade to this ipad from my ipad 5th gen, rather than getting an ipad pro. Mostly because I'd wanna get as much as I can with the iPad pro line, being that I'd get the full 16GBs of ram with 1TB of storage, but that could wait till the M2 or M3 versions.

Love your videos, thanks so much. I've never had an ipad (only apple device I've ever had and still have is my MacBook Pro from 2013) so your videos are really helpful because you do them from. An objective POV with your own preferences thrown in here and there. The objective perspective you give is really appreciated and its what I'm looking for in deciding which ipad to get.
I had been keeping my eye on the ipad 10 but now that it has been released, I feel disappointed with it (the price point and the fact that it still only has support for apple pencil 1 which now needs an adapter to pair and charge it!). With that price point I'm now considering getting the air 5 instead for a bit more.
I've seem some devices where you can connect an ad (or micro ad) card for expanding memory which works for me as I think 64gb would be enough except when I want to load on movies or soemthing so that would be helpful for me rather than paying 150-200 extra for the 255gb model! Really wish they did a middle ground 128 option lol

I upgraded from Air 3 to the new Air 5 and love it - the limited RAM on my Air 3 was causing app crash/lag issues. I didn’t want Air 4 because it only had 4GB of RAM (1 more than Air 3) vs the new Air 5 has 8GB Ram and I wanted to buy one to have for 5 years. I got the Air 5 256 blue with cellular for $799 (usually $899) and AppleCare+ for $59 (normally $79). The same specs on 11” Pro retails for around $1049 plus AC+. I compared the Air and Pro for a few weeks and didn’t find any real difference in screen (Pro slightly brighter) and ProMotion wasn’t noticeable and I have it on my iPhone 13 Pro and MacBook Pro 14”. I use AirPods so speakers not a big deal. I actually like the TouchID on the Air better than FaceID on Pro because in landscape I was constant all blocking the FaceID camera. And, with the Touch ID, just resting finger on power button opens the device - no swiping up like FaceID. I’ve not experienced any noise or build quality issues.

Disappointing but in the world of tech, see Samsung batteries, this does happen now and then, and hopefully OEMs learn. No big deal as Apple is offering exchanges.

Did you go with refurbished through the Apple store?? In my opinion that is the only way to go. I wouldn't trust any other store online. With Apple refurbished products you basically get new batteries new screens everything buffed and clean I think they even do new cases. ..... it's just something that can't be sold as new. I would say that 50% of my Apple products have been refurbished. And I saved a ton of money!

I honestly don’t like being ‘that guy’ lol, but he’s right, you really should have gone with a certified apple refurbish.
The whole point of these off brand refurbishing places is to 90% make the thing look and behave brand new - for a while. But when you realize that they’ve used insanely inferior tech to replace the original batteries or ports or anything else after the iPad starts failing on you in a year or two if you leave it on for too long, or just use it like the thing was meant to be used, but just destroying the internals while doing it because they’re just shit, and that’s literally why they can be sold for so much cheaper.
My Air 5 is likely to last me the next 8-10 years with the M1 chip… and unless you open the iPad up yourself, you won’t even know if that’s what they put back into yours.
Take it to a local techie and open it up and see what you’re working with.

I bought an iPad Air 5 from a very bad old tablet. I use it for watching TH-cam and gaming and the M1 chip is really fast. Well worth the upgrade in my opinion! I got 64gb and it’s plenty for what I use it for.

The Ipad prices in my country are insane. I had been checking the prices for couple of months until I finally made my decision on black friday. The absolute cheapest Air 5 64gb was 619€ (640$) and Air 5 256gb was 999€ (1033$)! Which is insane! Refurbished devices are rare finds here, so that wasn't an option. I was obsessed with getting the M1 chip and I too, like many others, leaned towards getting the Pro. However, I could not justify that kind of expense and I got back on the ground when I saw Air 4 256gb sold at 519€ (536$) on black friday. I bought it. I don't want to worry about the storage, I know that 64gb is just too little for me. On the first day using it, I already have 20gb used and I haven't even done much yet.

Refurbished through the Apple Store is new battery new screen new everything practically.. it just can't be sold as new. Of course your comments is a month old so you may have already made a purchase. Hope all works out.

Just got the 256GB in purple. No creaking, cracking, or clicking. Some pressure on the back of the device of the right side, you can see the pressure rings on the display. Note that this is with a pressure that is not normally done while holding an iPad. Keep in mind, I am upgrading from the iPad Mini 5, which is also as thin as the iPad Air 5 at 6.1mm and it does the same thing with a forceful amount of pressure. It's thin, it's called Air for a reason. Just don't grab your device for dear life and you'll be fine. :)

Just upgraded from iPad 4th gen to air 5. It's such a huge generation gap but honestly, I can't say i feel I even upgraded. The only thing different is that I can finally use apps like TH-cam again because I'm now on a higher version ios. Being stuck with ios 10 on iPad 4 had me locked out of most functionality. I'm pretry sure you can take an old 2013 android device and use it nowadays without such restrictions.
I might be spoiled by the screen quality and 120hz on my galaxy phone so air 5 screen feels meh and the scrolling is choppy. Thought Id have added a little bit and got the pro instead but I feel like they have several versions of iPads including Air on purpose jus to make you think "I'll just add 200 bucks more and get a better one" to force you to buy the most expensive one. The only reason I didn't go with cheaper IPad 9th gen is because of lack of Pencil 2 support. I'm sure they can make it support it, they just want you to buy the most expensive one by artificially locking you out of options. First you think of getting a regular iPad, then consider air, and finally start doubting if you should go for pro, spending twice or thrice mor eyou initially planned for having diminishing returns in features. So many scummy practices with Apple..

“It only makes sense to get more than 64, with M1”. Not at all. It all depends on what you want to do with it and what kind of apps/games you use. You just can’t store as much on it but that doesn’t mean you can’t utilize the M1 lol

My main problem with this iPad was storage, 64Gb is just not it anymore at least for me, but 256gb for for 750$ isn’t either, at that price point I’ll just go for an 11’’ iPad pro for 50$ more which is 100% better than the Air 5. So, it kinda killed it for me, I think is a great device but the storage/price automatically killed it for me personally. Either way I have an Air 4 and it still works great, the M1 upgrade is not necessary for me yet so I can live with this one or two more years, hopefully the next Air starts directly at 128gb already

Nice review. I can see that you tried to talk good about it most of the video, and kind of rushed into the negatives at the end. People with a bit of logic could see the same day this ipad was announced that it was a not update device, because it didn’t bring anything new as m1 is kinda pointless for 99% of people, it was maybe targeted to people who don’t own an ipad or a 4 to 5 year old model. You can get an iPad Air 4 used for about $350, and i would recommend that any day to the iPad Air 5.

While my iPad Air5 is definitely fairly durable, I already see that the ways you tried to create creaking were not exactly the best method. I do feel the creak/click in mine but it doesn’t freak me out too much. I feel it most when I hold my iPad somewhat horizontally, and the creaking is close to the middle. It’s like…if the middle of the back was “the saggy belly of a cat” if that makes sense…? I can feel a light impact as the inner components hit up against the chassis as if they aren’t fastened down properly. It doesn’t rattle, thank god, but sometimes it feels as if gravity lets the insides “sag” a bit. I don’t think this will be an issue in the long term at all, and overall I am very happy with my purchase (pencil and keyboard too!).
I will note, despite your testing methods not being able to recreate the clicking (and honestly it may not be an “every model has the issue” thing either!) you do highlight well that this tablet is still more durable than people are giving it credit for. As with anything that is half covered in a pane of glass, just don’t go flinging the thing around and it should last a good while 👍

Problem with the air is max storage is 256gb. If you are planning on using it for some sort of graphics eg photo editing (with a separate camera), art, that would be on the low side. However if you buy a pro you are paying extra for things like speakers and extra cameras, which are things you don't really need.

I've held a normal Air 5 (not at Apple store) in my hands and not noticed anything even when trying to identify the issues, and most people will just put a case on it anyway. The Air 5 is a great tablet, it has amazing performance, a beautiful screen even if not Pro-Motion, great speakers, great cameras, and it has full iPadOS 16 functionality aside from the display reference mode. At some point people should stop thinking of what they can get if they spend more because that's what these businesses want you to do even if you don't need the features.

I’m upgrading from iPad Air 4th Gen to the iPad Air 5th Gen. Mostly because of the $100 promotion gift card from
Apple. Otherwise I’d probably wait but am
    excited for the M1 CPU

Hey, I’ve been thingking about buying an ipad . I’m mostly gonna use it to read comics, watch youtube/netflix, editing photos, and maybe some note taking. I’m torn between ipad air 4 and ipad mini 6 (the price different is about 60$). Which one do you think i should buy ?? Thanks

As someone who has an iPad Air 2 for 6 years, this is worth of my money.

I have the 2020 iPad Pro base model with 128 gigs and cellular connection. I got a mini 6 base model not cellular with 64gb. Then the I bought iPad Air 5 256gb for the upgraded even if it’s unnecessary and I opted for storage. Even with it being in the pro territory for price. I decided I’ll buy a 2tb iPad Pro when the next one comes out so long as it’s an m2 processor. I ended up getting another mini 6 with 256gb because 64 is definitely too small for me and the mini is my favorite for moba games but, the pro is amazing and the air even being my most powerful is just meh. So for me raw performance isn’t my thing I’ve noticed I like storage and the bells and whistles of nicer displays like 120 hertz etc and I really appreciate small form factors so iPad Pro 2020 is still a better experience then iPad Air 5 unless you are power hungry. The mini is well rounded and portable which makes it a very desirable choice. I think for me all my devices will have a minimum of 256gb for me to stay content 128 is pushing it to close. When the new pro arrives it be my final rendition for a few years cause they last long as a whole and I’ll make sure there is a bunch of storage

... and now that Stage Manager is coming, yes there's a reason to upgrade from the 4 to the M1 in the 5.

Hi, thank you so much for this video! I am a nutrition student and I don't have any other Apple devices. I am not sure which Ipad I should buy and which storage. I am looking for something long-term for making my studies, writing, research for information, and apps like notability. What do you think?

I sold my MacBook Air m1 and bought again iPad.. iPad Pro 12.9 m1. This device is masterpiece. Brilliant display, fantastic, best speakers and of course performance. I couldn’t imagine using tablet without promotion display. No matter how powerful like iPad Air m1, visual experience matters too.

I really would love the iPad Air 5 in starlight but want a newer pro model which I am current,y using the iPad Pro 2017 10.5. I’m actually hoping for a new iPad Pro in either starlight or green 🤩🤩.

Based on experience, the speakers doesnt really matter. Most of the time, you will use your headsets/airpods.

My best guess for the WWDC 2022
    - Ipad Pro 5th gen
    + Ipad Pro 11” ( M1 or M1 Pro )
    + Ipad Pro 12.9” ( M1 Pro or M1 Max )
    - New MacBook Air ( M1 Pro )
    - New iMac ( M1 Pro , M1 Max or M1 Ultra )
    -And of course , iOS 16 , iPadOS 16 , MacOS 12 , tvOS , …
Also Thank you for making that so I can know more about it the save my Ipad , even though My friend buy it but I’m in Vietnam and He’s American so I ask him buy it ( lol :] ) I never had a device for the last couple months . The first I have a device was a Iphone 6s from my Dad but right now , I can’t charge or open it by pressing the home button and battery got low . Also thank you for showing some of the accessories because :
    - One , I find it like Everything and I MEAN , E V E R Y T H I N G but it got out of stock
    - Two , For me it’s very hard to buy accessories in Vietnam , even though some streets are full of mini Apple stores , not as big as the Apple Headquarters but since I don’t want to get a battery that’s not good and cause it to explode so I only just put on the wardrobe and forget about it
    And Three , e x p e n s i v e
That’s it and If your buying a device , make sure to buy it nice or buy it twice . Bye !
Updated a bit : I forgot to see the amazon link for accessories and it got out of stock ( oof )

I have a question, is the tab S7 still feesable to get now or in a couple months even though the updates will end soon? I heard that they'll end in 2024, but if I still need to use it, will it run smoothly?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For me it would depend on the cost savings vs the Tab S8. The tablet should continue to run fine, but will no longer get updates beyond that point. It depends on what's a priority for you. Hope that helps.

It feels kinda of pointless to buy M1 iPads at full new prices now, when the OS doesn’t do much for all that extra power. I have the mini 6, which will be a great device for years. When I need to upgrade an m1 iPad will be easy and cheap to buy.

    • @TechGearTalk
