Absolutely great informative video!!! Thank you for this!! There’s so much mystery with that AF-C Custom Settings system and your explanation of it makes it easier to understand. 👍🏻
I took my x100v out for a parents & kids outdoor play date this weekend, and set it with the settings you talk about in your video. I have to say that I had so many more “useable” shots! I still need to tinker around with the AF-C Custom Settings to really nail fast moving subjects likes kids and pets. But I’m really thankful for your tips! Thanks again!!!
Haha, don't get too used to these tutorials, they are more of a lesson for myself for maybe future reference 🤣 but there's so much I don't know so I want to document everything haha
Too many purists shooting with the x100 cameras. They refuse to 'cheat' with AF-C 🤣 to pay so much for a camera and not utilise all it's wonderful features is such a shame imo 👌
I adore your videos explaining the x100v ! The most useful in TH-cam always with showing the actual camera and examples perfect ! Please make more !! Nd filter flash etc
Best video I’ve watched on this subject. In my case I want to set up the x100v to capture images of may kids a reliable as possible. This video has given me all the information I need. Thanks for taking the time to create it and share ♥️
Wow! I am so so so so thankful for this video, seriously! Just got a FUJI x100v for day to day photography and am learning the basics of auto focus and this video was beyond helpful! I bookmarked it and have officially subscribed! Keep up the amazing work!!
Thank you Jay! This is the best video explaining Fuji's Continuous Autofocus that I've seen. The way you demonstrate the camera's response with actual moving objects in the frame is especially effective. I own a Fujifilm X-T3 and just recently acquired an X-T5 that is reported to have improved autofocus tracking. I'll be experimenting with the custom settings since I photograph American football frequently and often have a poor focus "hit rate".
Great, super informative video Jay. Definitely the best channel I’ve seen for explaining all the Fuji functions (I like the sound of Fuji functions). Hope you’re still finding time to get out and shoot!
thank for all the info . Actually I know all of these functions after 6 months , but I never used cont. focus at all . You clip sort of give me inspiration to switch to cont. focus to a change . It's kind of fun ( and not to miss ) to hunt for a perfect moment to take good picture of my family members , especially during covid time isolation at home . Cheers !
Yes! Definitely play around with continuous autofocus! It makes things a lot easier so you can spend less time worrying about focus and more time on composition 👍
A big thanks to you for this video, Jay. Turns out I've been using the completely wrong settings for sitting stationary and talking to the camera. Cheers!
Great video! I've just started to play around with panning and trying to get action shots of my brother skating. I wasn't sure which af-c custom setting to use so I've just been keeping it on multipurpose. Now I have a little better understanding of what the different options are. Thanks!
After all my search about focus finally !!!!!!! I found here all the answers to my questions about that ! Thank you ! I came from Sony where it’s more obvious and for Fuji it’s a little more complicate 🙏
Hi Jay, Thank you for your time on putting this together.I'm an amateur sports photographer and determined to prove that Fuji can be used for sports. Currently XT3 XF100400 | 50140 and 1655mm. Have been studying extensively this issue and every video that I could put my eyes on. Your explanation is very concise and at the same time simple and easy to understand. It allowed me to go over again this fundamental concepts. Mostly on water sports such as surf, kite, windsurf and found tennis extremely challenge where you want the ball just out of the racquet (SS over 2500). Best settings so far AF-C Zone 3X3 or 5X5 MS CH, but what I am looking for is reliability and just can't get that so far. However still way to go on the basic focus technique that will improve my keeper rate. Think the XT3 is very sensible to light conditions. Just a thought. Cheers and great video content. (Followed you on your street instagram today)
Thankyou Carlos! One of the areas I've never really delved into was sports photography, I can never really fully apply my theories to practice. But that's great insight into super difficult AF-C conditions. Zone focusing should work really well I would imagine, so long as the subject is in the focus area and nothing else. Fuji still has a way to go but at the same time, has come a really long way!
Cogent post, Jay. Custom settings (speed, sensitivity) take time to learn and apply wisely. Suggest separate vid on this topic, w/real world shoots beyond the desktop models, along with relative hit rates for different settings and conditions, if that makes sense.
That would definitely be a video in the making over a longer period of time, I originally wanted to make a more real life demonstration but I just haven't been outside too much lately to get all the material I need 😅 but as always thankyou for the feedback and suggestions Paul! 🙏
I leave my xt3 firmware 4 on af-c 90 percent of the time. Af-s sometimes misses focus because of a very slight movement of my hand, tho no motion blur, plane of focus sometimes shifts forward or backward which leads to miss focus.
I enjoy your explanation on Fuji's continuous autofocus, you mentioned using the shutter button to focus, however, is back button focus a faster and more accurate way to focus?
Great video!!! Only a question: in af-c, when you shooting the model, do you half press the shutter button until you want to shoot and so you finish to press the button to make the photo?
Hi Jay, thanks so much for this extremely in-depth video. It has helped really understand the capabilities of my camera, Also, to the two losers who gave this video a thumbs down, you must be very sad people.
In general yes, you would have to know how fast people move, luckily Fujifilm have preset tracking settings with pictures to show you what kind of speed it can handle. For most humans just walking or jogging, the camera should track fairly easily if you are standing still.
Hi Jay, thanks for the video. I have a noob question. When you set up to AF-C and zone focus, you still need to half-press the shutter button to lock the focus, usually the color of the small boxes turn to green. When you use it with high speed burst, from what i know about high speed burst, you just press the shutter button once and hold it to take continuous high speed shot. Does that mean i just need to half-press the shutter button once to lock focus, then when i press and hold the shutter button in high burst mode, the camera will take multiple rapid shot and for each shot, will the camera automatically adjust and "re-lock" the focus when the subject is moving in a different plane? (i.e. let's say running towards you) I hope my question makes sense. Thanks.
Hey Hendra, good question! When you have your camera set to AF-C and zone focus, the camera will not lock focus when you have the shutter half pressed, instead it will continuously readjust focus on whatever it thinks is the subject within your zone box. Having it on high speed burst means that, yes, as you are bursting, the camera will continue to change focus depending on any changing conditions within the focus zone. Hope that makes sense
@@JayRegular oh i didnt know it will continue to readjust focus automatically without half pressing shutter button if its af-c and zone. From other videos i watched when its af-c and single-point af, the person needs to either half press shutter button or back button focus at all time so the camera continuously adjusts focus, unless the pre-af option is set to on which drains battery. So for af-c and zone, we dont need to turn on pre-af option?
If I am not mistaken, isn't focus and recompose something that would only apply for single shot mode with single shot af? Because you are locking in the focus and reframing the shot with the original focus point. If you meant best for maintaining focus on subject whilst recomposing then, yes wide tracking with those settings would work, I would also experiment using zone af mode on the largest setting if you plan on recomposing
@@JayRegular I guess its better to call it subject track and recompose but it accomplishes the same thing as regular focus and recompose. My old X-Pro2's AF wasn't sticky enough to do it reliably but Im finding the V much better in this regard.
question.... for anyone here. when I have set my xt4 focus area to the center of the frame, I shoot a few frames,, Then, I see that the focus area shifted from the center out to the edge of frame!!! How do I make it stay centered? Thanks
I'm nearly an expert on autofocus modes...but your 'why' and examples of when to use which-- really clear and well-explained. I learned a bit here, and I loved this video
Excellent explanation and video bro! Keep up the good work. BTW, This is my new channel dedicated strictly to street photography I'll have some videos up soon.
It's just a bummer that you can't touch-to-track. Having to keep focus area, and them focus and recompose can sometimes be annoying, and just being able to touch a subject to start tracking it would be really welcome
Absolutely great informative video!!! Thank you for this!! There’s so much mystery with that AF-C Custom Settings system and your explanation of it makes it easier to understand. 👍🏻
Haha hope you liked it! Over more time I will experiment on the streets with AF-C once I have enough data I'll make a follow up video 👍

Excellent explanation Jay. Very helpful. Thank you
Your video works are becoming a technical school of Fujifilm... Congratulations...

That was clear, consise, and informative. Thank you for the obvious time and effort you put into making this video. Well done!

Amazing video. Perfectly explained. Thanks Jay.
Thankyou Antonio! 🙏
I figured out combining AF-on and Area AF, I can tell the camera exactly where I want the focus to be in video mode.

Wanna see X S10 auto focus test.
That's a bit difficult because autofocus tests depend a lot on the lens. Do you mean a 23mm f2 lens on the X-S10?
Excellent!
I have a problem with the focus when using the x-t200 as a webcam. Suggested settings? People say to have continuous focus and pre-af on
I don't own an xt200 sadly, but if it were me I would have it on manual focus at a set distance
