    I fear something terrible has happened.

    • @tropicalcatdetective

      Tbh I would have been 12 or 13 when this film came out, and I remember wondering why these kids were clamouring for He-Man at that point in time. The kids of 1989 had already largely moved on to other toy/cartoon properties like the Ninja Turtles. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe had been more of an early to mid-80s fad, so it always felt like an out-of-touch adult had written the birthday scene.
      However, while it already came across as a dated reference to a 13-year old me back then, at least audiences of the time still actually knew who He-Man was. I know Mattel has tried to bring it back a few times now, even recently on Netflix, but I guess MotU hasn't quite established enough of a historical foothold in pop culture to be more widely known amongst the generations after Gen-X.

      Actually He-Man is a Filmation property and it might be a swipe at them. But more appropriately at time both He-Man and the Real Ghostbusters were on in the same time slot, and Real Ghostbusters was more popular than He-Man. So those kids are out of touch.

    You've hit on a good observation in pointing out that this movie is more kid-friendly than the original. A big reason for that is that in the 5 years that passed between the first and second films, the television series, "The Real Ghostbusters" had a very successful run as a children's half-hour animated show. Columbia Pictures came to the conclusion that kids were a huge part of the Ghostbusters audience, and crafted the second film accordingly.

Cringer became the mighty BattleCat and he became He-man, the most powerful man in the universe. Only three others share this secret: his friends the Sorceress, Man-At-Arms and Orko. Funny thing about Ghostbusters II.... two key sub plots were cut down and shoved into the montage. The first is Louis and Slimer where Louis tries to bust him in the firehouse (Part of this is seen during the montage when Louis sees Slimer eating his lunch, and also during the end credits where Slimer is credit, that clip is of Louis seeing the spud in a mirror he has set up to look behind himself while wearing a proton pack).... and other is Vigo possessing Ray when he is taking readings while Peter is taking pictures, after the leave the museum, what we were supposed to see was Ray going nuts and wildly driving the ECTO-1A, the only clip of this is during the montage when you see Peter looking concerned while wearing the same clothes he wore when taking the photos. This entire sub plot would have tied into why Vigo so easily possessed Ray at the end of the movie

    I agree with Cassie that the sequel is not as good as the first movie but is still really enjoyable with some great laughs, with Bill Murray once again providing most of them. I was a bit disappointed that the potential romance between Egon and Janine that was hinted at in the first movie was not followed up, but Janine's and Louis' make-out session was very funny. I do like how tall Egon's hair was in this one.
    You're correct, Cassie, in assuming that the sequel was more kid friendly. By this time, _The Real Ghostbusters_ Saturday morning cartoon (which I never missed, as a kid) was a huge hit. One noticeable difference is how several of the characters smoked in the original film, whereas none of them smoked in the sequel.

  • @Andreas813
    @Andreas813 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    That this was more family friendly is actually a very good observation. It was made that way because in 89 when this movie came out there was a really popular cartoon based on the first movie (That ran all the way til 92, I believe) They wanted the fans of that to be able to watch this movie. That's why the Slimer ghost is like the Ghostbusters pet and roaming the firehouse freely, as he was "adopted" by the team in the cartoon. Also, the kid that talks to Ray and Winston about them being frauds is Jason Reitman, the son of the director. Jason is directing the new movie that will come out later this year. Great reaction!

He was approached by executives from Sony and hired to do events as Ray Stantz. This is why I love watching your reactions Cassie. You go into each movie with no preconceived notions of what a film should be and you let your own emotions and enjoyment decide how you feel about the movie. I have always disliked the negativity surround Ghostbusters 2. The original set an incredibly high watermark, and it was going to be impossible to meet it. Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989, a blockbuster year for films; including Batman and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and so it faced an uphill battle. A lot of the criticism stems from the perception that the cast seems bored (which I've never felt), and how the villain is almost nonexistent. As to that, Gozer shows up in the last 5 minutes of the original and is hardly a threat, yet few complain about that. These movies aren't necessarily about the story or the villian, they are about these wonderful characters and the friendship they share. The story simply exists to hang the hat of those relationships on. Anyhow, I just feel this was a wonderful movie to end the 1980s and encapsulates what New York was experiencing at the end of that decade. Both Ghostbusters films are special to me and I cherish them both.

      It's a cartoon from 40 years ago. You're old, mate. Sorry. If it helps, so are a lot of us. It's a big part of the whole "reaction" genre; people who know these movies getting to see them again through the fresh eyes of a younger generation.
      If you really want to feel old, there's a "cultural context" checklist that one of the Ivy League universities publishes every year at the start of the new academic term, where they note, for example, the things the incoming freshman class has never known (it started as a way to help orient profs, but has become its own thing). This year, one of those things would probably be a world without Facebook. That's never existed in their experience. The concept is purely abstract to them.

      @@sweetkiss119 How familiar are you with pop-culture figures from a decade before your birth? Why do you think someone who hasn't seen a lot of much-more modern classics would be scouring Netflix for a show that was only not criminal at the time because Reagan made it legal to broadcast kids' shows that were unabashed toy commercials that didn't even pretend to be at all educational?
      Sorry, mate; 40 is old. The culture is very clear on this. Homer Simpson was originally created as 35 because his writers saw that as impossibly ancient. I'm 40 myself, so don't feel too bad, but also don't be surprised when your opinions on pop-culture aren't exactly coveted by advertisers. Just not how any of this works.

      You have fun not grasping why putting your ego over learning anything will cause you to make the same mistakes over and over. The irony of your immature inability to exhibit self-control servicing your delusion of not being old is not lost.

    Ever notice how often Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle Murray appears in his films? The mom who walked the Ghostbusters into the birthday party also played the police psychiatrist throughout the Lethal Weapon series of movies.

    You’re probably ok not watching the Ghostbusters: Answer the Call 2016 movie as it’s not that great, and it doesn’t follow this story. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, however, is coming out next month and is a continuation of this story, albeit 32 years later and deals with Egon’s daughter and grandkids.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Afterlife would be a cool one for her to watch as one of the first current release movies she's ever watched. So far the most recent movie she watched was 2 years old, and then a couple that were 4 years old.

      One of the big problems with the 2016 Ghostbusters is that it replays the story structure of the original pretty much beat-for-beat, but with about half again the time added and virtually no extra content besides poorly-edited improv. It makes the whole thing very trying to sit through. Red Letter Media has an excellent analysis.

    I love watching your growth into Ghostbusters! I’ve been watching these movies since I was a kid in the 80s and to this day I crack up every time I see them (I was 6 when I saw GB 2). A perfect mix of suspenseful and funny, and timeless! I sure hope you get to the theaters next weekend so see GB Afterlife!

    That is exactly what happened. At this point, the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters had been on the air for three years, it was at the height of its popularity, and so the film’s sequel was made to be more kid friendly. The sequel to this one is coming out this November, it’s called Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it looks to be something of a tonal shift as kids find the Ghostbusters’ equipment safely stored away before an emergent threat returns.
    If you want more of these characters, though, I’d highly recommend checking out the first season if the cartoon show. Not the same actors, but all the characters feel right, and some of the situations feel amazingly accurate to the films. The first episode is a little meh, but it gets really good after that. The other seasons were ruined by a bunch of PR idiots screwing with it, but the first season is solid.

    The beauty of the original Ghostbusters movies is that the characters weren't in on the joke. They took it completely seriously, they were just funny people with a business idea of chasing ghosts. The girl remake was a bunch of standup comedians being standups doing joking bits. There wasn't any legitimacy. The original Ghostbusters were real and that made everyone love them. It's among my favorite movies.

    The Real Ghostbusters cartoon was insanely popular after the first movie, so its style filtered through to this sequel - if youve never seen it, I can recommend at least the first season or two of the cartoon, the writing is often brilliant and it can be very funny! Its the reason I grew up wanting to be Egon 😅

    This one may have felt more "family friendly" because by this point, the cartoon series The Real Ghostbusters had been a huge hit, lasting multiple seasons and spawning a large line of toys and action figures. So it did feel like they were trying to tap into a similar vibe. You'll notice that Jeanine's hair is much more of a bright red than it was in the first film, and it's probably because the Jeanine in the cartoon had bright red hair. Slimer also returns here as a friendly ghost, as he was featured prominently in the cartoon and eventually became so popular that the focus of the show shifted more toward his adventures, prompting the series to be rebranded as "Slimer And The Real Ghostbusters" in its later seasons.
