I'm a high fashion makeup artist and we dig these tutorials from the past for fashion week/studio photoshoot inspiration. The negative comments under this video shows how ignorant some people are in regards to editorial and high fashion makeup. These kind of looks are not meant to be your daily "no makeup makeup" look. These are avant-garde styles and are meant for publications, agencies, editorial shoots and fashion shows.
Yesss! I used to be a model and yes these looks are very editorial, very high fashion and obviously not meant for everyday. I noticed all the hate in the comments too and I was like what? Keep doing your thing girl, without people like you we wouldn't look so good! Love from the states!
Damn, these comments are super negative. I think this is actually really cool commentary, the makeup isn't meant to be flattering, it's meant to be interesting.
That is a beautiful look. A dreamy ethereal butterfly drawn from the early 70s Biba style and brought into the 80s. Toyah was a breath of fresh air for young girls and women in the early 80s. A loud, angry rebel 😊
I am in this 70s and 80s and 90s makeup rabbit hole after reading 2 of Kevyn Aucoin books and I realize how advanced and beautiful makeup techniques were back then. New generation thinks Mario and Kim invented contouring but the technique goes back to 70s and back. So much respect and admiration for MUA of 70s 80s and 90s. Makeup products evolved better ingredients and color selection but the artistry of those eras...they are so talented and beyond their time.
Barbara Daly Legendary makeup artist. She came up with amazing colors from back in the day. I think she did Princess Diana's makeup for her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles.
I don't know who toyah is nor have I ever seen her anywhere than in this video but I think she is a super cool person. I watch this video a lot because it helps me go to sleep and ever time I'm impressed by her maturity, humility, and down to earth attitude :)
The make up artist is Barbara Daly. She’s still doing make up, she is one talented artist. And the Toyah was an 80’s star. She starred in Quadrophenia.
I love watching this and I do think I could copy getting the same colors today in pencils. It's going to really look good with the dress. I just love going back in time. It just a great feeling 80s into the 90s
Fantastic! Just saw Toyah at a gig in Shoreham and she was wearing that same, original dress!! She said it still had gob stains on it from when the crowd used to spit at her in those days!! Haha, we didn't gob in Shoreham, it was very civilised ;-) Amazing, wonderful woman.
Its interesting how back then nobody really did know about makeup unless you went to school for it or someone taught you really well. I remember growing up and not even knowing how to do what because my mother rarely wore it. At best she wore a powder but the makeup world has revolutionized so much that now u can either google it or youtube anything u want to know about makeup. Its quite extraordinary.
It was different a d we read magazines...there were lots of how tos in magazines if you were interested. But there were plenty of girls who knew about makeup "back then" lol Products and styles have changed but things are basically the same.
My mother and older sister didn't teach me anything about beauty. I didn't know anything until college and learned through my job at Dillard's. I'm 33, and TH-cam exploded while I went to college, now the customers know just as much or more than the beauty advisors at the retail stores. It's wild!
The way she did the mascara was horrible. You never push mascara down or swing the brush like your swiping all piano keys. And you don’t stop half way as your mascara can dry and you can’t add volume to the eyelashes. She did it all wrong. It was cringy.
@@davidemascia3432 Someone who ACTUALLY did modeling and pageantry for years, hun, including Miss USA. 😂😘 Who are YOU? Makeup artists also used pluck girls eyebrows out to thin pencil lines. This woman being a makeup artist doesn’t mean she’s good at what she does. And judging by that pfp, I don’t think you should be talking. Sit down.😌
Anyone know where to find more videos like this? I’ve only seen this one and the one other Barbra Daley How To tutorial on an older and younger skin, and this is like the best kind of ASMR for me
"Vintage makeup tutorial" or "vintage makeover" on TH-cam. Also look up Michael Maron. From what I can gather he was the sort of US counterpart to Barbara Daly: 80s-90s makeup guru to the stars, did talk shows, charities, etc. I've started digitizing & restoring a vintage tape collection (beauty vids are a favorite!) and hope to have some obscure ones gradually available online.
I know this is an old comment but to anyone looking through the comments check out legendary makeup artist Sandy Linter she did all the models/celebrities back in the 60s/70s/80s/90s/00s. She worked with legendary Gia Carangi, Iman, Beverly Johnson, Kelly Emberg, Christie Brinkley, Patti Hansen, Jackie Kennedy, Debbie Harry, Tina Turner, Janice Dickinson, Margaux Hemingway, Cindy Crawford, Diana Ross, Raquel Welch
I admire Toya's candor at 5:51 - 6:01. I love the make up and the hair, I know I could never pull it off, I am way to square and stodgy to do it, but I love when I see young women owning their look.
I remember my best friend applying all the colours of the rainbow to my eyes, and I always wore bright blue mascara :D The 80's really was a fantastic time :D
This look has made a resurgence & who else got unintentional asmr from this? Both Barbara and Toyah have such soothing voices. P.S. as a kid, after toyah's punk days (90's kid here) I would weirdly muddle Toyah up with Blondie, both the ABBA lasses and the woman from Come Outside? No idea why lol haha
Yeah.... sorry buddy. The way the artist put her mascara on was all wrong. You never put mascara on from the back first. She didn’t put any volume into it. I was taught even never to do that back when I was like 13 in the mid 2000’s by my own mother for sheesh sake!
@FoxLimbs My mother who was in her 20’s in the 80’s never flattened her eyelashes in the 80’s like this idiot artist did to this girl. The point of mascara is to lift the eyelashes, not push them down. No idea what you’re going on about. Be ignorant for the rest of your life. Not my issue! Have a good one!
Aside from the lipstick I always did my makeup like this, different colour combos, till I had kids. I know now we have better quality formulas so it's much faster than shown here
I don't think she showed the application of the green/teal powder/glitters over the pencil. I guess this was still in the days where makeup artists kept some skills to themselves.
The application techniques for really directional, theatrical make up that has the reconstruction of facial features at its aesthetic core absolutely fascinates me. Halfway through completion something the artist is working just looks like a complete mess which is difficult for the observer to envision the end result of, and then-- TA DAH! So satisfying. I think it's why girls still love watching drag queen transformations on TH-cam.

Her makeup is so 80s new wave and awesome !

This makeup is so glam! Toyah is so talented, and seems like such a cool person even now. Also, these gentle voices are so relaxing!
Wow. She has such a beautiful eye color and facial structure. As we used to say in the business, her face takes makeup very well.
Barbara Daly Legendary makeup artist. She came up with amazing colors from back in the day. I think she did Princess Diana's makeup for her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles.
So beautiful it hurts. I want the same look now.

It's like ASMR...
Her name is Toyah Willcox, shes a singer, the costume is a show she was going to do (she wears weird costumes on stage) right now she's 60 years old.
The make up artist is Barbara Daly. She’s still doing make up, she is one talented artist. And the Toyah was an 80’s star. She starred in Quadrophenia.
@@SpookyElectric319 Now I remember Toyah. I remember watching that movie starring singer Sting. Such a badass movie.
Total 80s punk rock makeup! I love it!

God this is gold, Barbara Daly and toyah Wilcox together in one room💙💙💙
I do my makeup similar to this. As an 80's baby I think I inherited the need for color: bright & bold & fun.
This is amazing! What a gem of a video. Absolutely LOVE this.
So many people criticising this makeup look when most beauty gurus on TH-cam are walking around looking exactly like this 😂

I saw one with Paulina Porizkova Estee Lauder from 80s, she was the most beautiful model of EL company ever.
Very Avant-garde! I love it!
Uniqueness is so fun and fresh, like a spring breeze.......
I really want to do that two tone lip now! It looked so cool!
That look is stunning
"Some new romantic looking, for the TV sound" I LOVE IT.
Great 80s edgy make-up
Beautiful makeup
Make-up done right !
There aren't many make-up artist like Barbara anymore..
7:10 Best part when she says “a little bit of gold”. ASMR.
Woah amazing, what a time capsule of a video recording

This makes me so happy
Yesssss bring that color right up to the brow, so 80s love it
This is amazing. I love these older tutorials. My mom had a bunch of makeup VHS tapes. I wish I would have saved them 😑
Just found this! Wonderful to see Toyah 'Be Proud, Be Loud' at that exact moment!
Oooh this is peak 80s
1 year in??
@intheraw6393 Yes the 80s was hot and fresh. It had been incubating in the late seventies and had just popped out.
with or without makeup toyah is gorgeous.
Favorite ASMR
looks really cool I like the eyeshadow
One has to "Get" the Avant Gard and Appreciate the Esthetics of makeup Artistry, to appreciate this type of Makeup.

the weirdest sht I've ever heard.
Loving the makeup❤️

Toyah is so down to earth
Looks good 😌
Mascara goes on a lot better when applying it yourself. When other people do it for you, it just doesn’t get the full volume effect
so naturally beautiful x
I guess it’s just me, but I think she looks fantastic.
Ohhh wow a real live human being!!!
Yes it's so rare cereals female in the media usually the transgenders and 98% of them especially now
This makeup is quite pretty... imagine it done today with people perfectionist mind sets
Toyah reminds me a bit of Robyn the dance music singer.
love it
Isn't she just lovely
I don't I'm afraid... just a clip on an old VHS between Bauhaus and Siouxsie on TOTP!
Toyah was soo sweet in this 😌
Toyah's video of her cover of Echo Beach is one of the most perfect 80s videos ever
This was Cindy Lauper makeup, totally rad 😎❤!
This look has made a resurgence & who else got unintentional asmr from this? Both Barbara and Toyah have such soothing voices.

such a simple time 💗
This is beautiful and anyone criticizing it clearly doesn’t know how makeup was done. Stick to your basic TH-cam gurus maybe ☠️

Toyahs face, is the most perfect canvas.. Such a profile.... And those eyes....!!..... Those eyes..!!
If you pay attention this is EXACTLY what they're doing today? Bright colors on the eye, highlight...etc
But who's whistling @ 2:06 😆
Excellent bit of nostalgia, and doesn't she sound so young... Any idea what show it's from? Cheers Chrs.
