    I noticed you mentioned George Hurrell's pictures as examples of pancake makeup used to make stars look flawless, but a curious fun fact is that Hurrell actually hated make up on his models! It could emphasize skin flaws under the lights he used, creating more work in the darkroom, or make faces too flat. Instead, he asked models to arrive without any make up (except eyeshadow and lipstick), and their skin was painstakingly transformed by retouching the original negatives to remove blemishes, wrinkles, and freckles and softening shadows and highlights.

      Ah! Good to know! I think I remember reading that in one of my books on Hurrell. Sometimes the facts get mixed up in my brain!

    I was train by a lady from the BBC and she taught me how to use a cake block which could be used as a liner and mascara. I learnt to apply it with a flat or fan brush which to this day I still do. I do not use the wond often I find the brush you have more control

      Thank you so much for your kind words! Much appreciated! We’ve done the 20s-80s makeup tutorials here on our channel so I hope you enjoy those!
      I haven’t experimented with other ways to apply the pancake makeup so I’m not sure how critical the sea sponge is, to be honest. I think a damp Beauty Blender or wedge sponge might work but not sure.
      Thank you again for watching and commenting and welcome!

    There are many gorgeous colorized images of Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, and other classic movie stars, where you can really see the beauty of the 1930's look. Victor Mascaro is one of the best, and I always use his extraordinary work as reference point. This is a really lovely makeup tutorial.

    Absolutely love these vintage tutorials, such a fascinating access point into the history and sociology of the time period. I think we're going to see that high 30s blush placement make a comeback soon since it's the trend in kbeauty/Asian beauty right now and there is so much trickle down (trickle over?) from their beauty culture to ours, e.g. the glass skin trend. So glad I found your channel! Now back to binging your older content...

    • @MyVintageLove
      @MyVintageLove  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! So glad you're enjoying them! I hope you enjoy the older content as well. Someone else mentioned the that the high blush is a trend in K Beauty/Asian Beauty as well, which I admittedly do not know a lot about (although I did visit Seoul last year and don't remember seeing high blush as as a trend, but a lot can change in a year.)

    • @LadyNarcissa
      @LadyNarcissa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyVintageLove hello :) about this high blush and "Asian beauty" it was a trend in Japan few years ago called "igari", or "drunk/hangover make-up". It's inspired by the flush Asian people get when they drink, or when they get sick, it's a natural thing. This make-up style is supposed to look cutesy and innocent. That was 2018, a few years back the blush would go higher on the cheekbones, right beneath the eye, also mimicking the flushed and cutesy look. And it was A THING, that's how I could spot Japanese tourists and exchange students at my university, the blush was right where us Europeans would put concealer and highlight. It was a shock for some girls when I told them it's not a thing here, as we don't have that flush, at least not in this area of the face 😅

    In the early 1970’s I had the pleasure of working with a Max Factor make-up artist who recreated a late 1920’s look for me for a photo shoot. He used the palest shade of pancake and blue eyeshadow with very dramatic false lashes. It was fascinating and so much fun. The look you have created is quite similar and just as glamorous (if not more)!

      As a result, I never got into wearing blush. Always felt no matter where, how or what color I put down, it always felt wrong somehow. So I just eventually went: awfuckit, no blush then
      I have freckles, so there’s already “something” happening on my cheeks anyways
