I saw this concert at The Great Western Forum in Los Angeles in January of 1992. An average concert is around an hour and a half.... Metallica played, with no opening act, for nearly four straight hours with not one, not TWO, but THREE encores.. It was one of the most metal experiences of my life.
No question!!! Metallica took over with the Black Album. I’d like to see what she says were they to see Van Halen back in the day. Unchained Oakland 🤘🏼
I was 16 when I first heard Metallica. It scared me. I was into rock but rush, AC/DC, I listened to whiplash and I though it sounded evil. Now I wish real heavy music was being made in the us. There’s some Norwegian metal but ehh.
Hey guys. I was born in Moscow in 1980. And i remember this event so well! That was a history. The history of music and brotherhood! I’ve lost my friend. Police was so aggressive…However, we were aggressive too…It was a revolution. Braking the wall! And rock’ roll forever!!! That was epic…
The look of disappointment on her face when she realized this experience was unachievable in modern times just shows how timeless this genre of Rock is...
Hardly "unachievable". Just not worth it. I'm sure being in that crowd was an incredible experience, but when they do the wide shots, I like to play a little game called "How many of those people have shit their pants so far?".

Don’t worry Lex, the entire world will never see a concert like this again. This was a once in a lifetime show. Nowadays, you have to go to Brazil or Japan for 300,000+ people at a metal concert
I feel like 300,000+ in Japan is still a stretch. Don't get me wrong, bands like BABYMETAL and Band-Maid, as well as others have made huge strides in bringing metal back in Japan, but it's still miniscule compared to the J-Pop/Idol system of music there that just keeps churning out artists/groups disposably for consumption. It is on an upwards trend for metal there, though. At the same time I have to remember that BABYMETAL sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 seats) two nights in a row back in like 2016/2017, but I wonder how many people were there both nights since they ran through their entire song catalogue for those concerts.
@@lisalotwin3154 totally, when you see James Hetfield, he just look like a freaking North God (is hair, is presence, doesn't seem impressed by the crowd...)
well theres a very good reason for so many soviet citizens being present still, as a testament to Metallica's popularity; anywhere they go there is never enough space because they are one of the very few artists in the world that would perform a concert almost anywhere in the world and still literally have millions of people show up if tickets availability was unlimited this was true then and is still true today

When I was 14, my brother (17) took me to see Ozzy in Houston in '86. Metallica opened, (Master of Puppets/"Damage Inc. tour") and it changed my life. The whole way home, my brother just kept repeating: "That shit is next level. OMG." We bonded bigtime. i don't see him much these days, but when we do get a chance to chat, it always leads back to Cliff and how lucky we were to see him.
That is pretty cool my older brother who is 6 years older took me and my best friend at the time to Metallica on the And Justice For All tour in 1989 when I was 12 years old The Cult was the opening band.
Saw the Same tour in Denver when I was 16. (same thing... changed my life musically, being able to say I saw Cliff Burton play live. It's something I'll never forget!)
I have an old pic. of me wearing that Ultimate Sin tour jersey. I remember Cliff doing the head whirl and wondering how the hell he could play so fast on a bass.
Many ppl will say their gen is best….but the truth is….the 80s, were a different era, a different feel. The electricity, the happiness, the friendships, the music. Hell, even the sun and stars seemed to shine with a brighter sense of happiness and relaxation. The 80s were truely a very very special time. I miss it dearly…because it was, untouchable. It was love in its purest form.
The history involved with this show was intense. The iron curtain had just fallen and the Berlin wall just came down. This was the first time western metal had played in the USSR. These fans were finally free for the first time 🤯
wasnt there a concert before this one put on by doc mcgee...had pantera, motley crue, bon jovi, cinderella and the scorpions? Moscow Peace festival i think it was called?
I am Russian, what do you call freedom ??? after the collapse of the USSR, plants and factories all over the country began to be closed, unemployment and famine set in. People died as during the war against the German fascists, I will remind you that 39 million people died. and this is in "peaceful", as you say "free" time. The country defaulted, the money depreciated and the crisis came. Western and Chinese consumer goods poured into Russia, as well as drugs, the population was drunk and everyone died from low-quality alcohol and drugs. the streets were filled with homeless people and street children, the country had large debts and came under external control. Is that what you call freedom? Thank God that the terrible 90s are over and Russia has begun to revive. The collapse of the USSR is a tragedy for the entire people of Russia.
Actually there was the Moscow Music Peace festival prior to this in 1989. And the Scorpions who played western hard rock but are from Germany did few shows in Russia prior to that. Scorpions are big in Russia.
I'm really glad you're seeing this and getting that feeling. I saw Metallica on this tour, not to 1.6 million, but to a 20,000 jam packed arena concert. James Hetfield is an incredible front man and lead singer. That was a great concert. I'm older, but I still love to Rock!!!!
Seen Metallica 8 times, they never disappoint, even last year, and they are pushing the age of 60. Main difference to me concert wise is the price, last year the price for a floor pass was a least $1,000. In the late 80’s early 90’s it was a general admission ticket, 25-35 bucks, and you could push and claw your way to the stage or go sit up in the stands. Never thought I’d be saying, oh man, the good old days.
I paid $36 for a pair of tickets to see Pantera and Typo Negative in 94. Sunken Gardens in San Antonio, TX. $70 for a pair of Metallica, Fight and Suicidal Tendencies.
I remember being at the England leg of this 'Monsters of Rock' tour at castle Donnington. I am a Scotsman now living in Texas, still have the ticket. This Russia show was damn crazy. The cold war ending, the Soviet union ending. These kids finally letting loose at a free show. By the time Metallica came on the count had stopped at 1.7 million and was estimated to be over 3.5 million. Freedom is powerful
nouskrabs 2 months ago I was in this crowd. I was not 14 years old. It was cool. The empire of the USSR collapsed, and we threw off the shackles of communism. We thought there would be world peace. All countries will be friends. Insane euphoria. In a few years I will be sent to war. I will kill people, and they will not always be terrorists with weapons in their hands. In wars, innocent people often suffer. Many of my childhood friends will die. But then we were all alive. So happy and free as I will never be at this concert again. It was crazy. I got a Metallica denim jacket from those days. I'm already gray-haired. But when I watched your video, I became a teenager again. Thank you. If you didn't grow up in this time period (I was in High School when this concert happened) it can be difficult to understand what this, the crowd's energy and size was all about. This was the Monsters of Rock concert that was organized after the fall of the Berlin wall, and collapse of the Soviet Union. Western albums for these groups had been black market for decades and the people of the former Soviet Union finally saw that change. It was a crazy period of hope after what we thought was the end of the cold war, and this was just one of those iconic moments of the energy of that period. Again, it is just hard to understand unless you were around in the time period before and during all these events. It was an amazing period at that time. Sadly, I rarely see reactions to this video/concert, that even mention what exactly led to this moment/concert but it is important to have that context to truly appreciate it.
I saw this band when I was 20. 3 years ago, I took my 20 year-old daughter to see this band, and they were just as good as I remembered when I was a kid. It was EPIC!
This was a "Monsters Of Rock" all-day concert. It was free to attend the show, hence the very-large crowd at an air force base outside Moscow. Metallica appeared early in the day. AC/DC was the headlining act at the end of the night (their music was banned in the USSR for many years).
Logic and knowledge would would make a person ask: If Metallica which was NOT the main attraction and played for 1.6 mil- 2 mil, then the main act AC-DC played for what number ? The truth is AC-DC played for most people there which was 500k. Metallica played for half that ~250k. Russians estimated 1.6 million people were present over the course of that week-end. NOt at the Metallica show.
This was a 3 or 4 day music festival, there were 25 or 26 bands that played thru the weekend, was in a critical moment in history, since a week or 2 later cane the fall of the U.S.S.R. and this was the first concert allowed to be put on as the country was changing
The Historical significance of this concert cant be overstated. This was the first American Metal Tour through the Former Soviet Union. The Cold War was ending..

Scorpions are big in Russia.
these are real musicians, no pre recorded beats, just raw talent.
That’s so crazy! Born 94 so not as old buy I feel the change so drastic, the times before so much technology was something else
You forgot, "Get off my lawn, punks. Your music can't hold a candle to my generation's!"

Where were you? I was in Ansbach 86-89

This was a "Monsters Of Rock" all-day concert. It was free to attend the show, hence the very-large crowd at an air force base outside Moscow. Metallica appeared early in the day. AC/DC was the headlining act at the end of the night (their music was banned in the USSR for many years).
AC/DC played for an estimated 500k while Metallica for half of that
Logic and knowledge would would make a person ask:
If Metallica which was NOT the main attraction and played for 1.6 mil- 2 mil, then the main act AC-DC played for what number ?
The truth is AC-DC played for most people there which was 500k.
Metallica played for half that ~250k.
Russians estimated 1.6 million people were present over the course of that week-end. NOt at the Metallica show.

Definitely helped rock/metal spread to new ears, pretty awesome.
If you ever saw a Yankees game you heard this song. It was closer Mariano Rivera’s song. They played it every time he came out.
@@juicesghost8501 Oh hell yah. We bought ROCK BAND for our PS3. My daughter was 7 or so. She started learning the drums. Anyways, it exposed her to all the great rocknroll I grew up on. Old boston for instance REO, Joan Jett, Tom Petty, etc. etc etc. So we do this for about 4 years till we tire of it. But her knowledge of good music was huge.
Fast-forward to high school - she's in school band and going to her shows riding in cars driven by other student's parents. They're listening to the music they grew up on (same as mine) and my daughter knows all the songs! Her friends just look at her like she's an alien, and the parents in the front think it's the coolest thing and keep turning up the volume cuz she knows it all. That's awesome.
Yeah he used to play football - no doubt he heard it over the PA somewhere in some stadium.
Yes, I feel extremely lucky I was able to experience concerts like this back in the 80's, yearly 90's.
Watching your reactions, hearing & seeing these concerts for the 1st time. Brings me back to when I first heard them. Wishing I could experience it again for the 1st time. Going to the record store (yes they did exist) buying the new album and going home to listen to it for the 1st time with my friends....best feeling in the world. Then having the opportunity to see a band live in concert....priceless!!
I had an older Russian friend, and he said back then, the cops would jam on the breaks, get out, and beat you into a pulp because you had long hair and a Metallica shirt. So he came to USA, and was disappointed in our waning metal scene, lol. Boris was legendary.
Your comment immediately made me think of this: Olaf... Metal! lol.

I love watching you guys! Lex, your joy and spirit-Brad, your thoughtfulness and intensity-such a good balance and chemistry. It makes me appreciate the music you are reviewing even more
This is the year I was born, and this is the year my great country broke the hand cuffs of communism (And has been rebuilding ever since). I want everybody who is reading this to appreciate the beautiful sight of American flags flying in the crowd. People were finally allowed to express their emotions and opinions. Bands such as these were allowed to finally enter the country and perform. Rock n Roll as a whole no longer had to be underground. These people in that crowd have NEVER seen anything like this.
Can only imagine how that felt...
THE GREAT PEOPLE OF RUSSIA!,AND THE GREAT SACRED HOLY MOTHERLAND OF RUSSIA!.DASVIDANIA CAMARAD!.
Great comment Pavel. I read your words with openness and appreciate their meaning. What an absolutely euphoric feeling it would have been for the people at the concert.😃
Only music can bring so many people together. ❤
@@LouisCypher1976 He's lying! There were no communist handcuffs. Because there was no communism! There was socialism! That is, the welfare state. Apartments were supplied free of charge, and free medicine was provided with work. The state took care of its citizens and the Soviet people were the freest and happiest. There were excesses when foreign groups were not allowed in. But mind you, if people did not know, they would not have come in such numbers. He was born in 91 and cannot know how it was!

Great reaction, Lex is a metal head for sure, need to show more of her rocking out. You can tell she wants to. Grew up listening to Metallica. Need to check out Megadeath, I bet she likes them too.
Megadeth..But yes, they are an ABSOLUTE must..You can literally pick any song from any album and it will blow ur mind as to the technicality..🤘
@@deanleonard9984 Technicality does NOT always equal good. 😉
Imagine the adrenaline pumping getting 1.6 million people into the music! Definitely a record number of people in any concert anywhere EVER, wow!!!!
It was for a long time until a concert in Rio on NYE 2016 had 3.6 million. I think it was Rod Stewart???? But this was pretty revolutionary :)
My sister was involved in the underground metal scene in the 80's and we were friends with lots of bands. We saw Metallica play in many clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area back then, including my sisters living room! Those were some great times!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
You win lol
One guess to what your sister was doing to earn that
Without a dope
My bands managers son was a good friend of James. The camping trips I'd get invited to were lit.
I had a couple of friends in high school who attended that concert. It was so talked about for about 2 years afterwards. It was crazy.
It’s still being talked about.
The Moscow video is incredible/legendary. I can't believe the amount of people to this day.
I don't know if people understand/still remember what this concert meant at the time as well.
I got to see Metallica during the Reload tour in Pittsburgh. Great live venue and crowd. They were still just about everything you would hope for live back then.
Yeah, ruzzia was just got their 1st McDonalds, and one the first "actual rock bands" there was Metallica!!! Such a greatness there at that time.
Lex was right tho, never again. Icon curtain is back. 😅
They were Awesome at Tampa Stadium Florida Also this song never gets old!
I understand. 1991, the year the USSR fell. This concert would have been impossible before then.
Metallica was my first concert . My brother and I went and I've been privileged enough to have seen them 3 other times. The energy in the crowd is really something else.
I’ve seen them LIVE twice.
It’s incredible. The energy is the best of any live show.
Same here, I saw them in 1999 and then in 2019 and the live energy was something else
Ive seen them 4 times,Dori!! Just fabulous!! Uve ever seen Iron Maiden???
AC/DC is comparable...I've seen them 7 times
Agreed, and I have seen a ton of bands
@@ST_DCT I have them below Metallica, but actually 2nd, ball breaker tour. I saw a ton of bands too so that's saying a lot for ACDC
I loved watching your reactions to this! My 6yr old granddaughter will holler "turn it up" everytime she hears this song play! Drives her grampa crazy! Lol 🤘
Brad: How do you prepare to perform for 1.6 million people?
Answer: You just be Metallica.
One the GREATEST bands ever!
For real they commanded that stage like it was nothing, made it look easy, legends.
I think they used drugs and alcohol...
I'm pretty sure the big 4 was there, not just Metallica. I'm not sure if Megadeth was there or not though.
Nope this was AC/DC show not anyone else's and they did It for free and paid the other two bands . Facts . They didn't even know who the first openers was this band In the video and the other band
you have to understand the history of this time period. This was just before the fall of the Soviet Union and communism. This was a free event called Monsters of Rock, and basically it was the first time, that western, american(!) bands visited. Nobody suspected this much people to attend. And this music then was not just music, it was basically the start of something new and free. Imagine being there, never hearing anything powerful like this, knowing, that the world you knew is about to change.
Wrong. Go back 2 or 3 years EARLIER to a thing called The Moscow Music Peace Festival and a slew of '80's hair bands including Bon Jovi, The Scorpions, and Motley Crue. It was 1988 or 89. It was also aired on almost every radio station in America at the time. Look it up.
@@michelleruffalo4385 hmm.. thanks for the info, learning a thing every day:)
@@danielszomor5025 oh me too. I just happen to be old enough to have heard the event I spoke of on the radio. I was still in school and couldn't listen to all of it because of bed time and because of school.
The Moscow Music Peace festival was in 1989 and Scorpions and Bon Jovi were co-headliners… Scorpions were absolutely ridiculously worshipped in the USSR (which is funny, because Russians and Germans haven’t exactly gotten along over the years)
Panter Domination from the same concert!!! Dimebag was the epitome of a metal guitar player.
Domination isone of the BEST LIVE songs ive seen
Yes! Pantera are the kings
Dimebag was the gold standard for guitarist. Matter of FACT, nothing has changed and he Still is! Rip dimebag
So glad I got to see him before he was killed. Saw Pantera on the Trendkill tour. Amazing.
@@warwithin7 their best album for me... heavy and gritty as hell.
I’m gonna keep pressing…lol. You must experience Iron Maiden-Hallowed be thy name. One of the most amazing songs ever recorded.Up the Irons!
I second this
Fear not Darrell - I chatted with lex the other night on Discord and emphasized doing that song - she said the next one would be Metallica - moscow, but she noted that Hallowed is a must watch/listen.
@@Frostrazor Awesome..since they started doing Metal reactions and by seeing how much she is feeling the instrumentation of heavier music I have been imagining how much Lex is going to feel the melodic Greatness of Hallowed be thy name. Thanks for the response!
The Trooper and Run For The Hills! Ohhh yeah.
Hetfield crushes Steve Harris!
Love this reaction! I've only seen Metallica 7 times now, the first time was 1989 and the second 1992. This show was in between. I got to meet Metallica both times. They were so amazing. All that said, Metallica still puts on what hell of a show. I just saw them in 2018, took my youngest daughter for her first Metallica show, and it was still very awesome! They still deliver after all these years! If you get a chance, go. You won't regret it.
“Of to never never land”

So true how you guys feel
💪TRUTH 💪
The late 80’s and 90’s was the pinnacle of rock concerts and rock music in general. Everything was epic back then.
The early 80's definitely had some major Epic factor!.. Sabbath - Born Again '82, Priest - Screaming for Vengeance '82, Motley Crue shout at the devil opened for Ozzy Bark at the Moon '83, Van Halen - 1984 at The Garden was so sick! Maiden - the Powerslave tour '85.. It was a little before my time for going to concerts, but the entire decade of the '70s may very well have contained The Epitome Of Rock-n-Roll Epicness!
Ever heard of Woodstock? That's where it all started.
@@randerson7761 You must be on what they were back then.
Music peaked with 80’s/90’s rock/metal. We live in a musical wasteland now
@@randerson7761 Yes it was the beginning but not the pinnacle.
I was lucky enough to see them 3 weeks before this was recorded, also open air, also on an airfield.
They were preceded by The Black Crowes, Queensryche, and Mötley Crüe. They were followed by AC/DC!
Great memories ...
this was the Monsters of Rock tour correct?
@@ehouse430 Yes, it was. One of the best concerts of my life.
Pantera was the first band
Brad, if you’ve ever watched a Virginia Tech football game on tv, they enter the stadium to Enter Sandman. Their entrance is on TH-cam....
Just down the road from VT!! 🤘🏻
Also Mariano Rivera the famed New York Yankee baseball closer used this as his walkout song.

Great comments, you nailed it. I was 21 and it felt natural at the time, but this was epic. It’s as though they casually accepted that the crowd was so huge of course a few might die that day, whatever. Just unbelievable.
Lex's reaction just brings it home.
Y’all should also check out Pantera- “Domination” from the same concert
Definately
This.
And Creeping Death, the next song after Sandman Really wild listening to millions of people chant die die die.
Indeed. It would have to be the best live version of most songs I’ve seen. I’m a massive Tallica fan, but Pantera absolutely wipe the floor purely with this song alone and the SOLO!!!!!🤤 Dime da 💣 baby! My Boi!!!!!
Hell ya
Music and the arts is where we all connect. It can bring us together which is what we need today.
The significance of this concert can’t be overlooked or overstated. Lex! Spot on with the vibes!
I took my son to see Metallica about five years ago as a graduation present and l assure you, they still rock. Best concert I've ever been to. You should go see them.
When Brad said " if you wanted to leave early?" The look Lex gives him lmao like "now why the hell would you wanna leave" 😂
I love how Lex smiles everytime Hetfield laughs, I love it.
Lex!!!!❤❤❤ Yeah I saw Metallica 1995 in the globe in Stockholm Sweden 🇸🇪 The consert was so awesome and perfect. And when they played this song "Enter Sandman" We all got crazy on the floor. And headbanged thrue the whole song. I was in paradise then hahaha😂😂 And I will never forget it!!!!❤❤❤
