I’ve come across your channel because I’m researching a gift for my coworker. I’m staying because hearing you discuss fountain pens is cozy and soothing. And informative, of course! 😆 thanks for sharing

Reminder, match up your fountain pens with paper in your journals. Often than not, pen friends forget how their favorite journalers might perform differently on new paper, as well as their preferred ink choices. Reserve the back page for scribbles, so you get the right trifecta. Write on!

I’m fairly new to the fountain pen journey (I just have 4 pens,) and your channel is one of my favorites! I feel like I’m sitting down with a good friend who’s guiding me along my fountain pen journey and giving me great advice. Thanks so much for all you do, and I look forward to catching up on your other videos. 🙂

I have two vintage Platinum 3776 pens in B and M which write like an M and F, but they are wonderful pens to write with. I too, like the pencil feel feedback. I do not yet have the Pilot 823, but my vintage k500 and Justus are great writers as well. Pilot nibs are just some of the smoothest availabe. I usually have about 10 pens inked up, and will use any of them based on my mood on any given moment.

I’ve been loving your videos. I m very new to fountain pens. In fact my first ones are arriving today. In anticipation I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of TikToks and TH-cam videos and different websites. Yours has been one of my favorites. Thank you!

Not really a journaler, but I do extended writing sessions.
Not that I haven't journaled, but it's not something I want to do.
But I have good pens for my writing. Again, gonna be a voice for vintage. 😁
Esterbrook. Any "Dollar" era flattop, the transitional J and the double jewel J work for me. Generally with some variation of a medium nib. The 2668 I've sung the praises of already, but any of their medium nibs work well for me. And I've used 3 versions, just in a standard firm medium (there's at least 4. Have yet to find a 3668 or possibly an 8668, if those exist.) Multiple examples. Mostly because they're probably their most common ones and I like them. And the ½" diameter barrels just work for me.
Then, to stir things up a little, I said I like Jinhao. Though I'm not sold on number 8 nibs, I do like my 9019 Dadao. Great to grip when my hand is misbehaving (stroke and arthritis), and the medium nib is just smooth and wet enough for me.
Going slimmer. The Sheaffer's Balance Junior of the 1930s. Though shorter and slimmer, the nibs give enough variation to be interesting, and they're great writers. Some call them flex. I'd call them maybe semi flex, but a joy to use. Just not as long as some others. Slimmer, I can get hand cramps on occasion.
Hmmm... How about my favorite gold nibbed pens of all time? Wahl-Eversharp of the past, though those who have used them sing the praises of the modern Decoband line. I've used more than just the one model, but it's a Skyline for me.
Though Brian Anderson would disagree, I like the way they fit my hand, and I love the Art Deco streamline aesthetic. And I love the Wahl and Eversharp nibs. Have yet to get anything more than fine, but they've all been incredibly smooth and wet writers and just so nice!
For the 5th... Though I recently praised the Parker 45, gonna say the Parker Challenger. Though a button filler is a pain to clean, this lower cost Parker of the 1930s is great. Again, gold nib, and smooth and wet. And it's a medium!
Could include several nib options from Esterbrook, for extended writing. Anything x314. The 314 dip version is the pen used by JRR Tolkien for his time at Cambridge, where he wrote all his books. Why not include the fountain pen version? 😉
And because, let's include the Esterbrook broad stub. More of a flattened broad, gives some variation, and was originally for signatures. (I think it's the 2284?)
Might not have the ink capacity of some pens, but I'm pretty sedentary. Easy to keep a bottle of the ink in use close by. So, nothing that holds more than a mL of ink.

I use more than 4 or 5 for journaling,of course. However, my top 4 in no particular order are: Pelikan Blue Stripe M600, XF, Cross Blue Black; M600 Turquoise Red fM left oblique ground from M by Dan The Nibsmith; the best writhing Pen in my entire 100+ collection is, 1952ish, Parker 51, Aerometric, Maroon, S Steel Cap XF, GvFC Stone Grey ink; Wancher 7-Treasures, Black Bakelite, XF, 14k, Red ebonite feed, Monte Blanc Burgundy Red Ink.

Thanks so much for this awesome video. My favorite pen for journaling (the only one I use for journaling) is Pilot Custom 742 with a soft medium nib with Tsuki-yo ink (the most awesome blue ink ever). It is so smooth and wet. I love the soft nib because it has that bouncy feeling which makes writing a pleasant experience. I also have a Custom 91 and 74 with medium nibs which I use for personal letters and note taking. I have my eye on the Custom 823 medium nib in amber, which I will ask for my Christmas present, and it will substitute the 742. By no means I will stop using the 742 as it will replace the 91, and the 91 will replace the 74, and the 74 will be the one in my satchel.

Wow, we have almost the same preferences for journaling. I use the Pilot 823 and 742 (with falcon nib), and I love using my Benu (talisman though, not euphoria). As for traveling, I use either my Pilot Prera or Sailor pro gear slim, with backup cartridges. And finally - you guessed it - Platinum 3776. If I am going out of the country for weeks, my choices will be the Custom 823, TWSBI Vac 700 R because of their massive volumes, and the Platinum 3776 with cartridges from J Herbin (2 ml ink each).

Great choices! The celluloid tortoise shell 3776 is amazing. Don’t sell that! I have a F & M 823 as well. It’s crazy the difference between them. That F is really an EF but still one of the wettest, smoothest EFs going around.

Thanks for the great video, and for your reviews! Your review of the Pilot Custom 823's helped me figure out my ideal journaling pen which I purchased early this year when more nib sizes became available: the Pilot Custom 743 with a fine-medium nib. I also agree about the Benu Euphoria and Kaweco Sport being great long journaling pens. Nibbage.

  • @NoxOphidian
    @NoxOphidian หลายเดือนก่อน +1

These are all super good picks!
The 823 was my first gold nib and I got it in a fine and I agree that the jump from fine to medium in Pilot nibs is pretty drastic! I love my 823 :)
I have a Platinum 3776 and agree 100% with you with regards to the feedback it's a pleasant experience, not scratchy or harsh. It feels precise for want of a better word.
I had a Benu Euphoria in Autumn Forest finish which was a Cult Pens exclusive and it fell off my desk one day from like about a height of four feet and it snapped clean in two! I was sooooo bummed because it was a lovely writer! It has kind of put me off Benu since as I'm not sure why it would snap clean in two :(
I really really enjoy Onoto pens, I have two gold nibbed Magna's, a steel nibbed Magna and a steel nibbed Neko Pen inspired by Natsume Soseki and apart from the slightly more 'buttery' nib on the gold ones I wouldn't notice much of a difference! They are wonderful writers and have a decent ink capacity! They are all fine nibbed as I'm a fine nib guy in general, ideally fine, wet nibs like a Vanishing Point are my holy grail :D
Thank you for the content ^^

Really loved the vlog. Did you make a video of tuning the Kaweco Art Sport? After watching your channel, I bought three Kaweco Sports, one Classic (F), one Collection Smooth Sage (F) and a Apricot Pearl with M nib. The Apricot Pearl M nib skipped and was replaced by the seller with another Apricot Pearl (N) nib. This one also skips a bit. That is why I was interested to know the modifications that you made to your Kaweco Art Sport.

My top 5 - Benu Euphoria, Leonardo Momento Z, Vanishing Point, Platinum Procyon, Lamy Safari/AlStar.

So much nibbage... Have you tried the Asvine P20 or V126? They aren't quite nails as they have just a whisper of bounce to them, and both of these pens feel really well made. The EF is a little dry but the F was just lovely right out of the box. I haven't tried one of their mediums yet, but given how my Jinhao M writes, it's probably too broad for me.

Nibbage ✒️✒️✒️ I do love my Platinum 3776s but the Platinum İzumo got to be a game changer for me. Not great for my wallet but amazing writer out of the box and the best part is that it is a different experience then the 3776..
Lately though my favourite writers for long sessions are my Taccia Shadow Picture, my Dodici Midnight and my Kilk Orient Haphazard.. I also have my Benu Euphoria Hummingbird, Platinum 3776 Raden Galaxy and İzumo, my Kaweco Sport brass, Kaweco sport Carmine etc. I have waay too many pens inked at a time but I actually use them. I draw/doodle with my pens as well so I always have a few in various nib sizes inked up with carbon black or document black... I really can't choose; I love them all for various reasons 😅

The FPR Ultra flex might be a sort of entry level pen with a flex nib. I’ve heard hit and miss things about FPR so your mileage may vary. For things that are a bit over your budget, Tom’s Studio and the Good Blue have better options at a bit over 100. Right now the currents best option modern flex is the Mag600, but that’s way over your budget but may be something to consider at a later date.
