- Follow the dramatic and emotional stories of a group of pregnant inmates at the Indiana Women's Prison, in the US, which runs a unique scheme allowing some prisoners to keep their children on the ‘baby wing’.
With a 400 per cent increase in the number of incarcerated women in the US in the last 30 years, thousands of babies are born in American prisons every year, meaning competition for places on Indiana’s baby wing is fierce. Many prison mothers have their babies taken away from them 24 hours after giving birth, but a few lucky ones are permitted to keep their babies in the Indiana facility’s unique prison nursery.
Featuring births, babies and often intensely emotional scenes, this series uses powerful personal stories to pose questions about how the American criminal justice system deals with women and children and how the bond between mother and child survives the harsh realities of life behind bars.

There's something about the prison guard feeding this newborn baby, with such tenderness & kindness, that is making me tear up...
It's because prison guards are portrayed a lot of times like stone hearted bitchy women, that are emotionless and hard, usually because of the way they are trained. I've been to jail for something stupid, where I had to stay for about 14 days, which for someone who's never been in trouble with the law or been in jail before, 14 days was like eternity lol!! The truth is, there are good people working in jails and prisons, they just have to walk that line from being an authoritative figure, and compassionate human being at the same time!

As a mother, I'm glad that this program exists. No matter right or wrong but every babies deserve to be with their moms. Babies done nothing wrong and they deserve to receive full love from their mothers. Just a basic humans right for those little babies that's all.
Absolutely 💯 ! Everyone's focusing on the moms but in my view it's really more for the babies' sake. There is so much crucial bonding that needs to take place in the very beginning of life that is make or break for an infant's development. The mother-infant bond being broken right from day 1 can only harm the child.
As far as the mothers go, having a child taken from you is one of the most traumatic and painful things, and surely only exacerbates tendencies towards addiction and antisocial behavior which will lead to higher recidivism and an overall burden on society

I don’t think that’s really the point of why this is not a good idea at all. People are murdered in prisons. Babies can be killed by other inmates let alone their mothers. It’s just putting these babies at risk tbh.

I’m so mad that Ayesha was incarcerated for that long. Her boyfriend was commuting SA and what she did by stabbing his was self defense, AND it wasn’t even fatal! Ugh, sometimes the criminal justice system doesn’t make sense to me. She didn’t deserve this

The first time he hit her, she should have pressed charges on him. He would have been locked up for assault, and she would have her freedom.
She was on the wrong.. . she was presented with the option to report him several times in the past but she refused to, then he snitched.. What if it turned out fatal? She shouldn't have ever stabbed him at all..The criminal justice system isn't fair. she ought to have gotten a longer sentence so she learns her lesson well.. I have seen this happen alot in the community and they repeat the same offence and it turns out fatal...

That Amish couple that took Heather’s baby are such amazing human beings. They deserve everything good in life through their service towards Heather’s child.
I agree they are amazing. I've been a primary school teacher and foster Mum until I became too ill to carry on. The children in foster care are moved around a lot of it affects them in different ways for the rest of their lives.
I thought the exact same thing. I just seen the End of the last episode. They seem like wonderful people!. What a truely remarkable gesture. They are very good people.

Prison guard Crutchfield is an amazing woman. She shows such compassion for these inmate moms giving birth without a family member present and kinda inserts herself into the position to help. What a kind soul. May God bless her for being so much more than a prison guard.
My God 15 years for drug possession? That story really struck a cord with me; considering her deeply traumatic childhood it makes total sense to me that she turned to drugs, and a 15 year sentence? Jesus Christ it’s heartbreaking.

What's even worse is the minimal amount of time Indiana sentences child molesters. Child molesters are barely given half that amount of time for damaging a child for the rest of their lives.

@@jbb729 literally!! I always say "it's only a coincidence that I am me and you are you". I was not exposed to these kinds of drugs at such a young age; how can you possibly expect someone in her position not to turn to drugs as a coping mechanism. People have no empathy and no perspective sometimes. It's what keeps us from making genuine progress.

They have a whole series its like 10 episodes its only 1 season it has the same prison and program its just from 2017 its on TH-cam as well its called born behind bars. If you don't know about it already lol.

There is a program not sure which network about a babies born in prison. It followed several inmates who had their babies with them after giving birth. It's called the we ones program. They had to meet the requirements to be considered. And the babies could only be in the prison for the first year of life.
She is not actually breastfeeding, she is pumping.

It's really sad she had the choice to report him time and time again but she chosed not to. But yet it was not the same way he felt towards her. I hope she learns her lesson.....

@@pauljerome01 it's kind of sad. Police cannot be trusted when the person is hurt. Here where we are, she can issue a personal protection order against him. He's not allowed to go near her or touch her or else she can file a report against him and he will be arrested. Abusive relationships are sometimes cos the perpetrator is so manipulative they can control the victim. Other times, the victim is too blinded or too emotional towards the abuser, hoping the abuser will change some day

I think this program is wonderful. Remember, it’s for the babies. Plus, all the moms are supervised and taught parenting skills they probably lacked. I bet the recidivism rate is lower than general pop too. Wonderful idea.
and they cant have a violent past. So I like to look at it as if they made bad choices and they are being disciplined not punished, but though this program maybe they can get to the route of the problem. They are who they are because of their life experiences. Let's give them the tools to move forward and make better choices.

Oh my gosh how sweet that first prison guard was with the baby and talking to the baby and feeding the baby. That's got to be the best part of her job honestly
I think this is an incredible program...but what I most respected was the kindness that the prison staff showed to the inmates who couldn’t keep their babies. They cared and it showed! Hats off to those folks! I pray these young ladies upon being released give the best life possible to their children!

As a mother who had a 3 week past term stillborn, this made me cry and cry. My heart broke for these women. The separation of a mother and child is the most painful thing I have ever experienced. The difference is I had loved ones surround me with support, hugs if wanted, space if needed, an ear when I needed heard. Prayers go to any mother enduring separation from their children.
That baby with the Amish folks is getting wholesome and healthy stuff to help her grow! The Amish are good people

What kind of life do these babies that are born to women in prison have and its sad to kbow that alot of these women will never be able to bond with their chldren they are serving life so tragic
Sexual assault is prevalent in the Amish community especially by church figures. They cover it up by threatening the Victims or taking care of their families to keep them quiet. I have multiple patients who were raised Amish and turned to substance abuse. One patient her father would take her outside of the community when he’d sale his butter & give her to grown men in order to support his hidden drug habit. She had 5 men at once when she was 6. He did draw the line at giving her to non white men 🙄🤦🏻♂️it’s funny bc she refuses to date white men today. Some Amish are good but some aren’t.
I'm so damn proud to be a part of the medical community! That staff treated her& her baby with respect and dignity. I strive to do this with all of my patients as well. 💙

I am from Indiana and met a woman who was in this program and her child was a happy and healthy baby , this program is an AMAZING one and from the brief encounter I had with her on the bus , the lady was able to tell me so much and she said this program helped her so much . Praying for these ladies and their beautiful babies 💖
First-time mothers should be given top priority in keeping their babies. They're going to leave prison and expected to care for a grown kid when they have never experienced being a mom or felt that connection. It's harder for me to sympathize with the women who have a handful of kids already that they obviously couldn't take care of and stay out of prison for.

My heart broke in two when tammy was having her visitation with her daughter who was just sweet as candy and then she had to leave and they both start crying. As a recovering addict With 2 kids that's the worst pain ever is leaving your children I remember it so well and that's been almost 5 years November 1st.
15 years for drug dealing!? When I was violently sexually assaulted and my perpetrator wasn’t even sentenced to prison, they sentenced him to probation. What’s wrong with this picture?

I swear this episode made me so emotional. Because im a mother myself . I’m really happy to see mummies and child are healthy ; I can’t imagine not having anyone during labour ❤️. I’m so grateful that my husband was by my side during my C section although he’s afraid of needles and blood. I love my baby and my husband more than anything in this world❤️

Why would they wait until she was leaving to call her mother in law. That's messed up.
They said in the beginning they are withholding the induction and c-section dates from the inmates on purpose to reduce the risk of escape. I guess that also applies to the relatives and that’s why!

As a retired nurse and a christian, I think this program is a wonderful program!! Yes, they ARE being punished, but come on, these women need some compassion in their lives! They are still having their freedom taken away! This may be the extra boost and encouragement these women need! I wish this program was in every state!

The whole point of prison is for people who use their choices and freedoms in a way that infringes on others rights and is detrimental to society at large. It's where people who can't get their acts together go. You seem to miss this.
I DO AGREE as a Christian, I did not watch the entire show. I do not believe school age children should be in any part of prison for any reason, except a brief visit IF they want to visit mom.
It’s nice to see the prison guards are sincere and empathetic towards the babies and births.. the prison guard held that child after being born like her own and it was nice to see

Look up Jessica Kent here on TH-cam. She discusses what it’s like. She also regained custody of her daughter and has been out of prison for around a decade.

Iesha seems like she’s a caring and good mother under her circumstances, I hope the best for her. 💗 don’t think she should have been in there to begin with, but maybe it helped her break away from the abuser.

I think this one is from 2009, I just Google their names to see how they are. Most of the babies are teens now
I felt that the officer in the first delivery room was awesome. She tried so so hard to make it as normal as it could possibly be.
I think that this program is awesome. Giving these ladies bonding with these infants, gives them a reason to do very well after delivery and release.
It’s been proven that the states that have enducatjon, rehabilitation, and are given a skill as well as a place to live and job when they get out of prison.... they have a much much lower percentage of inmates re-offending. Great job to Indiana, Texas, Tennessee and whatever states I’ve missed, who care enough to help these women succeed on the outside. I’ve seen so many cases on these shows of women who get out with no job, money, or place to stay, and over 75 percent of these women end up back in prison. Sending them out with not as much as a bagged lunch is setting them up for failure.
I’ve never been in jail or prison, but my heart goes out to these women. Over 90 percent of them have been abused in one or more ways as a child, teen, and or adult. So they need to have deep counseling to get over those things and to have better coping skills. And while I’ve never been in jail or prison, I have been profoundly abused as a child, then in foster care , and in years of marriage to a doctor. ( doctors, policemen, fire fighters, military, and other positions of power, are very likely to be abusive to their significant other. ) I just never respected myself or knew any differently since abuse is all I’ve ever know. And I fear it WILL BE all that I will ever know.
So thank u again for helping these ladies. And they are ladies.....(most of them are), not just women. A lady is different then a woman.

So wonderful the Moms are encouraged to breastfeed even though they don't have their babies with them and the prison facilities this.
I’ve been through labor pain. It is NO joke! My first child I tried to push out naturally and it was the worse pain I ever felt next to a toothache. I took the contractions well. I didn’t scream or anything but pushing the baby out I screamed cried cursed my mama out and everything else. The dr came in after maybe 45 minutes of me trying to push the baby out and said the baby is going under stress so I had to get an emergency c-section. I was so relieved because I knew the pain was going to be over. Labor is no joke. I really feel for the women that pushed babies out before epidurals & c-sections were a thing.
My first son was natural due to a failed epidural. The staff were horrible and treated me like the epidural worked. Worst pain I've ever felt. When I went in to birth my second son, i got an epidural that worked but still literally shook when it was time to give birth. Instant tears, shook like a leaf fearing that pain and experience. I 100% had ptsd from my first birth that stayed until I gave birth again. The first time was so bad that despite not being in pain the 2nd time because the epidural actually worked, I still flashed back and my body reacted as if I was going to go through it again. Thank God I didn't. It was black and white and I knew, without a doubt, that I was right. The pain I felt wasn't "pressure" like the nurses were saying. They made me feel crazy and weak and kept telling me I was wrong and not feeling pain when I was in immense pain while trying to birth my kid. I'll never forget that. Made the experience traumatic physically and mentally.
For reference, I begged for a c-section with my first. I laughed my second out. But yeah.. all I was feeling was "pressure" my first go. I knew birth wasn't a walk in the park but support would've been nice.
With My first child I chose to give birth naturally. He was a 8 pound baby. You right the pain is NO joke it was the worst and it was traumatic. I tore too. For my second child tho I got an epidural as soon as I was able to and wow the difference it made smh. If I children in the future I will be having epidurals for sure

The part that got me was the fact that she was gonna change the babies last name to the white guys last name after seeing that she's actually not mixed. That man doesn't want that baby to have his last name. Just give the baby your last name!

@@belladamex767 Where I live in Australia going by birth, deaths and marriages you can name your baby any first and last name (as long as the name its not offensive) and it doesn't have to be the same last name at all to the parents and you don't need permission from someone to use a name that is the same to them, like with my son's father he was sent a form to sign from the government asking if he is the father of my baby can he please sign the form and send it back. (my son's father last name is a very popular last name tens and thousands of people have that same last name all over the world and I didn't need to ask all of them to use that last name, its up to the mother and father, but if she is a single mother its up to the mother what name is use for her baby)
This is a great program! I am happy these women get to spend time with/or have their children with them! I truly hope they turn their lives around! It is so important for the children to know the love of their mother's and vise versa! I hope the future is a win win for the program and the inmates! Kudos to the correction officers and hospital staff for being there and helping these women! It is bitter sweet! Foster parents are angels! It truly takes a village...Amazing to see so much support by their families.....I can go on and on! xo

I agree Wishard hospital treated me like absolute garbage when I was in labor I'm still traumatized 😔I won't get into it but I just glad there were treated with some compassion ❤

poor Aiyesha (sp?)...that is an all too common story for women in abusive relationships. The one time they retaliate and fight back or defend themselves, the partner freaks out and THEY get charged...even though they were being abused and controlled all of the time :( free aiyesha!!
Absolutely. I was really confused when after she saw her son the narrator says there’s a 30% chance to reoffend, it was absolutely self defense so I don’t know why they would include that with her because clearly she won’t re offend. That’s just trying to perpetuate a stereo type, such bs.

Im so glad to hear Donna was accepted and allowed to keep her baby! I truly think she will come out of there and take care of her child. I truly support this program, I think it's amazing these women get the chance to keep their babies. I hope they followed thru with it after they got out and didnt just use these babies for an easier life while in prison.
I’m happy for Donna, I couldn’t believe they gave an open spot to Bobbie.
Donna laughed while talking about an inmate killing her baby in the microwave. She also kept calling her baby "it" or "the baby" instead of "my baby". That's distancing language. She has another child already and her teenage husband is also in jail. Unfortunately I don't have high hopes that Donna came out of prison a great mom.
Some of these women you can really tell that they WANT to do better and they WANT to be good moms.
One of the women said that she already had a child at home, the later on she said that she'd be "less likely" to commit another crime because of it, yet she already committed a crime as a mother before she had this baby, so how was having another baby & giving her access to that child in prison going to solve anything? It's SO abundantly clear that the wrong people are in charge of this trainwreck
Rebecca was so grateful to awaken to her life of respecting herself, her 2 children and family on the outside. She is a winner waiting to be released! She will make it Lord willing.
Rebecca has been back to prison every single year since this documentary aired in early 2000s and has 4 children. I pray she gets herself together some day

She had the opportunity to LEAVE! Instead of stabbing him, and now, SHE is the one imprisoned

I am so happy for Donna as it could be life saving as well as so grateful for the the and compassionate Amish family that help these women. I do believe in this and support it fully.
Blesss those Amish couple 💛 to care for babies that aren’t theirs and possibly end up giving up or keeping them. They have such hearts !
I was in a prison for more then a year with my baby in central america. They kept all the moms with babies, about 25 . we were in a separate modest building it had a playground in an outside area we could be from 6 to 6. When a child turned 3 they would come take it away on his or her birthday. If they child became ill they would send for transport to a neatby hospital with the mom. They did it good.
If you don't mind me asking, were any of the inmate mothers ever aggressive or harmful towards anyone else's children? Or were women for this program carefully screened to exclude any women who were known to antagonize each other?
I’m glad that this program is there. They need more programs for prisoners. They also need help when they get out or they may end up back in the same situation.
I hope and pray ALL these mothers are doing great and being the Mom these babies deserve. I am gonna say a special prayer for them tonight Love & Light To All Happy Holidays!!!
Even though their relationship is strained, there has to be some degree of comfort having your mom there. No it's not ideal that they're both behind bars, but if they have to be it's good they can be together and work to mend their relationship.

That woman does not deserve that baby. She more concerned about a man that blew up an entire apartment building with a meth lab than making plans to get an apartment and job when she gets out. 😑
Could you imagine getting a c section and having to recover in jail 🤢😖😖 I could never. Literally so painful. 15 years for drug dealing? 😭😭 Meanwhile rapists are out here walking freely.
Aisha breastfeeding makes me cry even more. I’ve nurses all 3 of my kids. Expecting my 4th!! 😊😘 so sweet. Glad that these ladies got to bond n I hurt for the ones who didn’t!
Save your stories for the parenting magazine and stop trying to discourage these mothers by throwing stuff in there face!

What a awesome program I wish these moms the best...everyone deserves a second chance
I cried watching this. The Officer who was there for her delivery is such a kind soul. I delivered my son with my mother-in-law there and it just wasn't the same. I had only just met her a couple days prior. I felt so alone. I can't imagine for these women. Yes they made bad choices but, maternal instinct is POWERFUL and every able bodied woman who is able and mentally stable, should be able to experience that. I truly believe it.
I don’t know this as a fact, but I presume most women who end up in jail have an addiction to heavy drugs and get arrested when trying to get money illegally. If, on top of that miserable predicament, you take away the baby, it’s the perfect excuse for relapsing perpetually. Props for programs like this starting even in such backward-thinking nations ❤

Life takes it twists and turns. These women didn't start their lives knowing how they would end up. A bad upbringing can cause such chaos. Though even with a good upbringing you can still fall. I feel for them 💙
The woman who gave birth to her 8-9 child is such a terrible person and terrible mother. She has no clue who the father is... speaks highly about her character and then she has the audacity to say she wants to be with that man with the child who was making drugs and blew up building. I feel so bad for the children. Such women should be allowed to have kids.
The way she talked to the Amish lady who is helping her taking care of her baby. Not once she said said thank you or sounded appreciative. I hope they take away her kids.

I agree. She doesn’t think there’s anything bad about him running a m$&h lab, her children would be better off with other people. I would love the Amish couple to adopt the baby, at least then she would stand a chance at life.

I know you will teach your son to never abuse women, like I taught my son. We are survivors of domestic violence as well and yes I was incarcerated for crimes my abusers committed as well.💜
And also, advise him not to get involved with a woman that could stab him.

I personally don't mind it. I think that once the baby gets to a particular age then a family member has to take them, but during the early stages they should be with the mother.
I would have given the baby my last name until I knew who the father was.

She was blessed to have such a sweet family take care of her baby. Especially they want her to get her baby back. God blessed her indeed!

I’m a police officer in Missouri and i hope all these women who are in jail get the help they need it’s sad that they only get to see there kids for 2 hours that’s sad i wish them the best of luck god bless them.
Heather seemed more concerned about finding the meth lab Dad than her baby. Her 8th baby. I don't think she even cares honestly.
She doesn't care. She doesn't even know who the father is. Those poor kids. 8 kids deep and she isn't learning from her mistakes so I would say a lost cause at best
I feel bad that Rebecca"s mom couldn't be there with her. That's a major event to not have anyone you love there. I would cry if my husband wouldn't be there if that were me.
It was her boyfriend’s mom and it was for security reasons.

This can truly be an amazing program for a lot of these ladies. They are taught to amd how to love and care for their child. Something they may not have experienced at home. Yes Theyre in prison for a crime. That's also suppose to be about creating a change and reform. Our prison system for the most part just sucks.
