Can AI cook better than James May?

- Is AI really a threat to humanity? We found out by seeing if it can cook - using only the ingredients on the Bugout Bunker shelves. The human race may be safe for now...

I love that James will earn barely anything from all of these videos compared to his net worth. He's a man with a lot of money and free time and this is just what he decides to do.
hes promoting the gin in a fun way.
@@gestapo81 seems more like a bonus to me
@@gestapo81 True, but he was doing this before the gin too
That's pretty much the way to go with lots of money and free time
Pretty sad choosing this way to stay relevant...

- James May😊
I love how a rich man like James saves 50 % of the ingredients as to not be wasteful and save it for later.
A man of the people
Pessimistically, he didn't want to have to eat twice as much of this creation....
He grew up in post war austerity UK years in a middle class family.. It's in his blood not to be wasteful lol. No matter how rich he gets.
@@kcmichelson4528if everyone had that attitude we'd all be a lot better off!
At the end of the video James tell us, that he is now going to make, the same food, but his way and not with AI,,, so I believe he only used ½ of everything, so he could do that with the rest.
I have done a quite a bit of low budget film production myself. and this looks like a low budget production. It is way more fun to do, than big productions,, more enjoyable work.
@@MyPlayHouse 👍
Before anybody says anything, I would like to remind everybody that James beat Gordon Ramsay at a pie making contest on Gordon’s own show. Let that sink in.
"It's only 3 years out of date" well, now that's the ghost of my grandma speaking
It is the kind of thing that has a Best Before date, not a Use By (over here)
I would still use it, cooking oil isn't like meat or dairy.
@@CarpetHater 'horses for courses' would apply, though that's a bad idiom to use here.
Never wise to mess around with meat or dairy, even if within Use By date.
I've had milk go sour days ahead of it's date, but not smell off. Pretty obvious though when making tea or coffee. Have also had it stay fine for days later.
Won't take any chances with meat, but it tends to let you know when open the packing, or even before if the film on they tray has done that 'pillow' shape.
@@benwu7980 with everything i check the date first, if it's close to it, i open and smell it, if it smells fine and i don't see any discolouring or mold or anything i cook it to check, and if everything passes i will eat it. That bottle of oil there looks fine, and if it doesn't have any bits floating in it and it doesn't smell bad it will most likely be fine to use.
@@CarpetHater Yeah, the sniff test still reigns supreme. I've had a tray of chicken portions, well within date, no pillowing on the packaging.. but wow they smelled so off when opened.
Gets a little more complicated if getting something already marinated or basted, or if don't have a decent sense of smell.
Regardless, Best Before is just a hint rather than a rule for a lot of products. I'd be fine using a can of beans if a year or 2 out of date, unless something obviously bad about them, the same with the oil in video, if it's still clear and not 'gloopy' or rancid.. then fine.
Wouldn't exactly recommend it for a food review though.
James May twatting about with food in a bunker is the most wholesome thing in the world.
That is the only time iv ever seen that not be used in a sarcastic or dirty way. You win the internet for the day in my opinion
I feel like wholesome isn’t the right adjective for this - but I agree anyway.
I'm excited to see Lego James right in front of the burner.
Good spot.
I'd buy a lego James
Everybody needs a lego james
Oh that's what that is, my eyesight really is appalling.
He's keeping an eye out for a random pink lego brick.
James in the bugout bunker kitchen has got to be the most oddly satisfying content out there! Keep 'em coming!
I wouldn't trust it😂, you didn't have cooking oil so I used engine oil instead
I used to really enjoy Foodtribe so is fab to see this again
@Kingtrollface259 he used even fancier oil 🛢
I love the odd, but perfectly working, combo with Lucy.
"I'll go first because that's correct." - James May, gentleman and icon of chivalry and politeness.
“Hello”
Finally the bugout bunker is back! Please do more Dr May
Edit: another in 2 weeks we are saved! Hopefully even more after that 👀
I thought its the dugout, not bugout. yes, confirmed. it is a dugout - look at it.
@@bluceree7312 no it isnt, it literally says bugout in description - look at it.
@@bluceree7312 Who calls a bunker a "dugout" bunker? Bunkers are for "bugging out" - therefore a "bugout" bunker.
@@LadyBeyondTheWallI don't really know what a dugout is (something to do with baseball maybe?) but it doesn't seem absurd to call a bunker (something predominantly found underground) a dugout. I assume at one point in time most bunkers are in fact dug out.
Those corned beef keys can be used to unlock a supermarket trolley without a £1 coin
Brilliant! Now there's relevant consumer knowledge we all need!
Now that's a hot tip!
i'll add one to my keyring.. just in case 😆
You can also use them to "liberate" the coins that are stuck in these supermarket trolleys when they're in use...
Only in the UK.
17:37 the way the pie retreats back into the oven 😂
It is ashamed of itself screaming 'I am not presenting myself to the world´. No spices or herbs, to much liquid. Interesting subject though. Let's fix an internal combustion engine with AI. See if it will run.
Even the pie knows it shouldn't exist.
HAHAHAHAH I LAUGHED HARD
It's like the oven was eating it, to save James....a bit like a soldier jumping on a grenade, to save his fellow man... It was almost as if the oven was saying "for the good of humanity, i say NOPE".
I think it would be cool for James to cook something that only uses ingredients that Lucy likes.
Do we know if the Marketing Director of James Gin (Lucy) even likes his Gin 🙂 That would also be fun

it took me way too long to notice that little LEGO figurine of james in front of the cooker
James saying "don't waste your money putting gin in" is great. As if anyone else is gonna make this ❤😊
I've never seen one of those can keys in "real life". Almost like watching Tasting History except i feel the exact opposite of wanting to cook it myself.
Being able to just pop the meat out with the top of the can seems quite handy, instead of all the jiggery-pokery with getting spam out of a tin, even if the edge would take your arm off.
Me: I'm not into cooking/food shows.
Also me: Tasting History and James May cooking in the bug out bunker are my two favorite things on TH-cam.
Something about James resonates in a way that makes me like pretty much anything he does, from wine travels with Oz to the bunker things with Lucy. There must be a little James May inside a lot of us, I think. Also, I love Lucy. She should get more camera time, I think as she's perfect for James (read that as you like).

So happy to see you both working together again. Fab vid.
The sly reaching in, and grabbing the Branston was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Thank you.
The Lucy-James dynamic may be my favorite part of these videos.
Agree! and I can not put a finger on why..
@@MyPlayHouse it feels like they're similar in personality. They're separated by decades, but from what we've seen, Lucy is not exactly the most loud or outspoken, she is very particular about things she likes, and has a certain demeanour that feels like she prefers things to be "proper". All of these things pretty much apply to May, too.
It's what I imagine James was like when he was a young woman.
@@MyPlayHouse it is like a daughter that he never knew came back from the future to cook with him !
@@ToasterPizzaFun I do see what you mean. But why is so enjoyable to see that,, and it is. especially when she and May,, disagrees.
You just KNOW someone is going to make a song out of James putting the items on the table and saying them emphatically. 😁

@@TheSigmaQueen It's wot the kids do to be cool, init!
Probably still better for frying than fresh olive oil
You should totally send a colab to the mythical kitchen / good mythical morning’s, Rhett, and link to see if they can come up with a recipe that was better than the AI version with the exact same ingredients. This is totally up their alley, and would love to see that!
It never gets old when you say the name of each ingredient.
Next challenge, AI makes something with ingredients that Lucy likes (or tolerates)...
Now steady on. Everything has its limitations, even AI.....

That oil’s out of date.
*proceeds to return the rancid oil back on its shelf*
it's not rancid! It's in a sealed container and can't possibly go off. It only goes rancid if it's left exposed to the air.
It's there for emotional support.
Out of date =/= rancid
He'll use it when Lucy isn't looking, bet ya!!🤣🤣
It's just oil. It pretty much lasts forever.

I have less than no interest in the food part of this, but James makes it so enjoyable
I really like this easy humor just flowing out of james may.

17:49 the iconic James May "aw"
the actual combining of the ingredients... Literal tears running down, so funny ahahaaa
fun fact! the russian military used to (no idea if they still do.) used essentially the same can opening trick as corned beef to store cans of ammunition.
A Dutch-Canadian made instant potatoes. For once the UK can't be blamed for ruining food.
Saw a DB5 for the first time in my life in person the other day.
I almost cried at its beauty!
Just a random fact for all of you out there who I’ve never met and will never know.
Maybe this would even beat Gordon Ramsey Shepard’s pie
Not difficult as Ramsay is a fake cook IMO. Other people cook his stuff, which James hinted at in his Oh Cook show, Ramsay is nothing more than an overbearing loudmouth.
@Elwaves2925 You're confusing Ramsey and Jamie Oliver. Jamie Oliver is a proper fraud
6:32 I wouldn't worry, James, we aren't going to
James may just does his own ting that's what i like about him.
Looking forward to your version James.
Is it just me or is Lucy getting better at tasting stuff...and not gagging. Great job!
Both is kind of fun,, it is also amusing when she just flat out refuse to even try.. We need her to try James Gin 🙂
21:10 Almost spat my water out, my immature mind latched on to that when I wasn't paying attention. 🤣

Thanks for making these videos, I love the channel!
James & Lucy banter is why we're all here
this is the content i miss, great job Dr May
Cool video idea. More please!!
"Don't waste your money putting gin in"
Yes, because I was definitely intending to make this.
James, we are all starved for enjoyable entertainment, and we all love you. Give us anything you feel like filming and give us as much as possible. Lol We’ll pay you if we have to. Lol
A gin and corn beef casserole is a sentence that should’ve never been uttered
Still more entertaining than new top gear
the hob you are using is an induction hob, the beeping is to stop problems with the electronics involved in it, also unevenly heats non induction pans used on it, the reason it continues beeping is because of something like magnets involved dont like it when theyre not part of the circuit or something (cant remember the manual or it off my head)
Smash and other dried potato/egg/whatever are a leftover from things like WW2 where they were part of rationing
oh forgot to add, a proper induction pan makes life so much easier on that hob,
sealing the corned beef tin with a soldering iron... how much more James May can you get?

Last thing I want from an AI is for it to tell me to "Go fetch me an onion."
You gave it parameters, it gave you a recipe.
lol yeah
Sincerely can't wait. Thank y'all so much!
lucy doesn't like half the ingredients in there and still ate some, absolute legend
They need someone else to do the taste test, it's the same thing every time with Lucy, I dont like this, I don't like that, what is the point in letting her taste it 🤷♀️ very boring....
I will never get tired of watching James May content of him just doing everyday things. Somehow he always makes the most mundane of things quite entertaining
Great concept but it was bound to fail as it tried to use every single thing in a single dish.
Can you do another version with a better "prompt" for chatGPT to use to give it a fighting chance?
Something like
=======================
Give me a recipe for a meal I can make with the following ingredients:
Not all ingredients have to be used, meal can consist of one or more dishes.
You can also use common store cupboard ingredients, such as: rice, dried pasta, oil, salt
It must take less than 30 minutes,
It must feed 2 people,
It can only use an oven and a single hob,
Etc...
=======================
AI can be really helpful, but it is a tool and has to be used the right way.
You wouldn't buy an axe, whack the handle against a tree and say "axes are terrible at chopping wood"
Really like the channel, looking forward to potentially seeing a part 2.
Love,
A foodie software engineer :)
This - the difference between can use and must use. Asking for a recipe with James' collection as available ingredients yielded Spam and beans with Branston mustard over mash, soup on the side, and a glass of gin. The Spam and beans bit doesn't sound half bad, really.
It will still fail to give proper oven instructions.
Also a software engineer. Buying into the AI hype without knowing what it is, is a pretty silly idea
In my experience it does provide reasonable instruction. In doing evaluation for a group looking to incorporate AI into a cookery website ChatGPT created (or went forth and found) a couple hundred recipes. There were a few duds, but most were acceptable. One - a casserole of picadillo layered with cheese and masa - is in my home meal rotation. Also discovered that peanut butter and sriracha sandwiches are A Thing.
Agreed on the excessive hype.... AI is a tool, not some miraculous thing. Then again, when one realizes they've spent a good hour discussing the works of Rabelais with a server farm....
The people who make the remixes are going to have a lot of fun with James unleashing the ingredients there.
Can't believe you didn't put cheese on the top ten minutes before end of cooking time, also a big glug of Worcester sauce would have given it some welly.
Ah but those weren’t in the list of ingredients, so couldn’t be included 🤣
I love how the corned beef tins still come with the classic key opener.
Opening the tin is more satisfying than the taste of its contents.

Is "Flood the cowling" a Battle of Britain reference?
Yes. I believe it's either to do with the coolant in Merlin engines, or the fuel mixture in the carburettors
I actually have been learning to cook by consulting with Claude (my go to for it) and making recipes from ingredients on hand. One thing to do is to double check the recipe, it can forget things like baking soda in a dessert recipe. You can redirect where the recipe goes by disagreeing, explaining new limitations, and offer a new direction. It's a fun process and I've been making my own from scratch recipes free handed without measurements often.
I like how James informs Lucy, “the bin is full”, as if she’s responsible for removing trash in HIS house.
