I just started watching this video and idk if you covered commander Fred’s death yet but I need to share that even the way he was killed is based off of reality. what happened to Fred (being literally ripped apart by a group of angry women who were fed up with the injustice and the fear of the r*pes and gangr*pes they had endured potentially continuing) happened in real life a couple of years ago in India to a gang leader named Akku Yadav. A group of over 100 to 200 women descended to where he was being led out of his courtroom and after he threatened to r*pe the women once he was let out (while the cops holding him laughed as he was making his threats to the women gathered to see his trial bc the cops were all paid off by him), the mob of angry women descended on him with knives and their bare hands and killed him and tore off parts of his body. He and his gang had been terrorizing the slums and targeting the girls and women in there for years all without ever getting in trouble - his gang of men had r*ped girls as young as 10 years old, he r*ped pregnant women and women who had just given birth 10 days prior, he and his gang gangr*ped women to death, he r*ped women in their own homes, girls walking from school, etc. I came across a bunch of comments on Reddit and other forums criticizing Fred’s death and how “unrealistic” it was and how there’s no way it was based on reality bc of how horrible it was and it really grinded my gears bc as usual, people continuously underestimate just how much suffering women have gone thru in history over the thousands of years of oppression and injustice that continues to this day for women and girls around the world.
Didn't that happen during the execution scene in the 1990 version of the film? The scene opens with the hanging death of a handmaid accused of seduction and fornication with a medical staff member. Afterwards a man is brought forward for execution after being charged with raping a handmaid ( probably the one they executed moment's earlier) and the "aunt's" excuse to justify the execution of the man was because the handmaid was pregnant at the time and the fetus died as a result. Apparently the aunt whips the other handmaid's into such a frenzy that they literally tear the guy apart. The author wrote the book to serve as a warning of what might happen if Christian nationalism were to take hold of the country but now it seems like the book and the miniseries itself might have given these Christian nationalists the idea of how to make Atwood's book become a frightening reality for our entire country with that project 2025 rhetoric which is indeed a scary thought now that Trump has managed to seize power again.
I think Margaret Atwood also drew on the experiences of women at a type of work house that used to exist in Ireland called Magdalen Laundries. So-called fallen women were sent there to work in convent type conditions for the rest of their lives. There were also mother and baby homes where women who got pregnant outside marriage were sent to give birth and often their babies were given away, sometimes sold to couples who could not conceive. Some very dark history in Ireland around women. There is a film called the Magdalen Sisters which sets it out fairly well. Last such homes only closed in the 1990s 😮
17:46 Many African-Americans, upon being freed from slavery, also felt the need to keep the surnames that had been imposed on them after slavery, as it was the best way that family members who had been sold away from them could find them again.
Most of black Americans were also related to the family that enslaved them due to the practices of slavery. Hence why just about every southern (and then some) American family has both a black American and white American lineage.
The FGM you mentioned is not technically a sterilization procedure because that would mean they couldn’t reproduce. The removal of the head of the clitoris can actually be treated with reconstructive surgery nowadays (thank god), which is lesser known, but the mutilation is extremely painful and can actually cause UTIs, childbirth complications, infection, and death.
Reconstructive surgery though is hit or miss in success. I’m happy it’s there, but it in itself runs risks and doesn’t always make you your “ old self “ again. And then comes the cost…..
This is a very interesting video. I knew Margaret Atwood said that she didn't put anything in the book that didn't have a basis in history. I didn't know most of the history though. I know that the Puritan theocracy in the 17th century US was a big inspiration though. Thanks for this video. Very enlightening
You did FANTASTIC! I wouldn't have guessed you were not familiar with the format style at all. I didn't come from TikTok you were just on my recommended.
I’m here because of TikTok, thanks again! There’s a poem I didn’t realize was written by Margaret Atwood called Half Hanged Mary, about Mary Webster, it’s a very intense read.
The algorithm did a great job for me this time because I'm currently rewatching all seasons of the Handmaid's tale, and this time I'm aware of Margaret Atwood saying nothing of this is fiction and noticing all the real life horrors ir draws on. Treatment of women in Iran, genital mutilation in Africa, punishment for adultery in Saudi Arabia, persecution of homosexuals in Georgia and Uganda plus the pink triangle the Nazis used, not even mentioning the most recent political developments in America and Europe (Serena = Giorgia Meloni). So many thanks for taking the time to put this together!

Such an interesting video… I found myself googling and researching as I listened! I read years ago that Atwood visited Iran just before revolution and also saw that sudden change in society as a point of ‘inspiration.’ Fascinating book.
Yes! She was writing while Iran was shifting from being very similar to the way the US was in the 1980s to how it is today! The book is always going to be so relevant because like I said in the video fascism always follows the same rules

So glad you mentioned aborigine kids being removed under the White Australia Policy. Thank you. Regarding forced prostitution - there are also all the Comfort Women enslaved by the Japanese Army in WW2. Unwomen weren't just lesbians, but any woman who didn't fit the Gilead system.
This was super interesting and insightful!!! Thank you! The explanation and delivery was brilliant. It's terrifying to know that the Handmaid's tale is not as far-fetched as what it comes to mind when you think about a dystopia.
Wow, think about how except for the history and culture of the Puritans, hardly anything about the atrocities against women is taught in schools. Most people can't even handle this level of knowledge. Great video.
As a person that did not come from TikTok and you were just recommended in my TH-cam feed, I have to say this is honestly a really great video! Keep up the amazing content!
The statement that "Gilead is the only place where the birth rate is rising" has been bothering me for awhile, and here's why: from the beginning of the war to "now" (in the story), they kill many fertile women and men (some on purpose, some by accident); they cause the death of thousands of children both in the war and because of the war (remember the white file cabinets full of unidentified dead children that Moira sees in Canada); they don't test husbands or wives to see if they're fertile so if the husband is infertile, handmaids can't conceive; no information is given to tell us what happened to all the kids that were "saved" from their "sinful homes" but are never adopted by anyone in Gilead because of their age, attitude, or physical flaws but I'm guessing that number would be very high (I don't even want to think about what they did with these "unplaceable children"). If there were a way to add up all the babies born through handmaid's, then compare that to the number of children who died in or because of the war, the number of children killed is most likely still much higher than the number of children born to handmaid's. Gilead claims the birth rate is increasing but in reality they're still just replacing all the children who were killed. The death of so many fertile women and men plays a part as well, I'm just not sure how to calculate that.

As a fellow college dropout (but one working an office job helping with marketing), I have your youtube videos or TikTok playlists playing through my headphones most days. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content, even the more casual videos feel researched, like i’m having a conversation with a very smart friend. Even though I’m not in college right now, I’m passionate about learning new things, and your videos, along with those by Lindsay Nikole, Miniminuteman, Astro Alexandra, and Jac Frost, have been a major inspiration for me to take the first steps in going back to school- if for no other reason than to learn more about what makes me happy and avoid feeling like i’m living a stagnant life.
You really are doing amazing with the long-form content, there have been a few other tiktokers who's content brought me along to their TH-cam channels and you are the only one that has kept my interest and I've watched all of your historical videos (I have a deep-seeded discomfort with blogs though so I haven't really watched those but I also haven't tried to watch a vlog in 80 million years). Two things I thought of during this is how these same topics reappear throughout history and yet we never learn which is both fascinating and terrifying. I was also reminded when you were talking about royal witnessed births how consummation of marriages were also witnessed so that the marriage could not be annulled by the church if it was falsely claimed that the consummation never occurred.
Wow thank you so much for saying that I really appreciate it!!!! And yeah the royal birth situation is A LOT and was super common across so many cultures
I gotta say I just watched an animated version of the handmaid's tale. And stumbled on to you. Wasn't my thing when the show was on,too scary. I have always been fascinated by totalitarian regimes, but none of the those that had existed or are still existing managed to elicit such a degree of revulsion and hatred in me towards them as this fictional Gileadean regime does, not even close. It’s quite a feat how this regime manages to make the North Korean regime appear as a beacon of freedom.
Great video. I’m not on tik tok so I just stumbled across this video and subscribed to your channel immediately just based on the density of solid info you gathered and the rather charming presentation. Thanks for this. I learned a lot of new stuff =] 💙🌊🌊🏄♀️🏄♂️
Hi, Daisy! I am not from tic toc. I am so happy that you came over to the long form! Your information is exactly something that I was looking for. So, Thank You and please do keep up the good Work !! 😊💖
How the aunts treated the handmaids is quite similar to the treatment of unmarried mothers in the Magdalene laundries/mother and baby homes at the hands of nuns in Ireland
HELLLL YEAH IM FINALLY IN THAG TH-cam ALGO but fr that’s great i love listening to long vids in the background too so thank you so much for choosing me
You did great moving to long form content! Regarding the example of Argentina it is pretty significant that the people being locked up were political opponents for the Government (trade unionists, activists, socialists, etc) and that the reasons for the imprisonment were either nothing but daring to be a political opponent or in some cases literally nothing, with no records given to families, and no closure given, very similar to how Gilead worked. This is also one of the reasons one could become a handmaid in Gilead, being fertile and a political opponent. We also see in one of the flashbacks Fred murdering an activist in the woods similar to these political killings. The prisons and other facilities these prisoners (including pregnant women) were kept in were also quite similar to the facility June and the girls were being taken to were rather than living with commanders they would be "visited" during their fertile period. Facilities were women would be kept for free labour due to pregnancy (or other "misbehaviours) can also be seen in another example of Magdalene Laundries, which are especially famous in Ireland but existed in many other places (eg Australia, Canada, etc) were "fallen women" (which could be anything from women who got pregnant out of wedlock, women with a disability, assault victims, etc) were forced to work under the auspices of learning trade skills, but we're really there to punish and gain free labour from them. Singer Sinead O'Connor was forced into one as a teenager.
Fantastic overview and historical context. I don't use tiktok so I found you through youtube while looking up videos on The Handmaid's Tale so I can be ready before it becomes reality in 2025. Very well researched and presented. My ONLY minor complaint is the silent chapter cards, I listened to your video so at first I thought I was losing signal or my YT player was freezing up until I realized it was just the chapter cards! Easy sub. Thanks for the info!
I don't have tiktok. I stopped watching when filming was halted during covid. Idk how I landed here but, tysmfs this information. I'd forgotten how good this series was. 🎉
In the book, early on, June actually discusses that on the ritual night, Serena allows the household to stand and watch the news with her. She describes how she can tell that each fuzzy channel that passes is a montreal station being blocked. She talks about how every channel available aside from the news is a man singing hymns.
Very much worth watching, even more so a year later. One of the first "nudges" from the Universe to become a minister was reading Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out in the early the mid 80's- I thought it was just going to be another post apocalyptic type adventure novel, not realizing that it was going to point out something I'd been noticing around me at the time- the rise of what we now call Christo-Fascism or Christian Nationalism, but back then was simply the rise of the Moral Majority and the Christian Right and it's unholy alliance with Republican politics. The movie in 1990 would would have the same effect. As my calling to ministry came closer that story along with the books of Bishop John Shelby Spong such as "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism" and "Why Christianity Must Change Or Die" brought home in my that I was meant to be a minister to lend my voice to the growing fight against the rise of this. During the pandemic, while home I started watching the new version of Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, and I had to stop about 5 or 6 episodes into the first season, with Trump in the White House, and people dying around me it was just too on point. I finally have been forcing myself into it over the last couple of weeks, taking an episode or two at a time, and then putting Archer episode on Hulu after to just lighten the mood. I'm halfway into season 2 now and seeing a lot of scenes fleshing out the rise of Gilead, especially the men coming together to create this Christo-fascist supposedly pious society that subjugates all women, while at the same time slipping off (and slipping off their piety) to the whore houses they set up. Project 2025 is the blueprint for Gilead, and the 4th Reich all rolled into one. It is NOT a joke. And every vote not for President Joe Biden or lack of vote due to whatever one thinks is a valid reason for sitting out this election is a vote FOR this horror whow happening on our shores, in real life... and eventually the world.
Wow, that was actually really incredible and super interesting. I’ve never heard that perspective before, someone entering the ministry to push against Christo fascism! Truly inspiring
Thank you so much for such an interesting video! It was easy to follow and very informative. I came from TikTok, and I’m really glad I took the time! Thanks again 🥰
Thank you for this! You did an amazing job putting together the research for this. I knew a lot of these, but not all of them. I appreciate your work to educate us in these dark times ahead.

14:29 *4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days* is an outstanding independent film that shows a slice of life under Ceaucescu. A naive and helpless protagonist dragoons her roommate into helping her secure an illegal termination procedure
Just finished rereading "The Handmaid's Tale" and reading "Testaments" by Margaret Atwood and found it too painfully prophetic! It's plain to see that America just hates women!
This just showed up on my feed. Thank you so much for this wonderful historic information! I have heard of The Handmaid's Tale but only a little. I learned a lot and truly enjoyed it! BTW you did a great job😃
Great video, thanks so much. I just started watching the series a month ago. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I think it is an important reminder that progress can be reversed. Your historical insights are super interesting. I live in Italy which has an exceptionally low birth rate for which even keeping pets has been blamed!
Crazy how ppl always seem to blame it on being a dog mom/dad instead of considering that we have created a lot of infrastructure that supports being a pet owner and a sense of con around it but being a parent in many countries is super isolating

This was so good, thank you for sharing all the information. Like you said. it’s sooooo important to understand how racism and authoritarianism starts and functions do you can see it coming. The history lesson on all of the things that Atwood drew from is great! and also terrifying.
Daisy, let me just say this: I love the breakdown you provided about the show! I finished season 5 and I’m a little annoyed that it took me so long to watch it! But I want to mention how well you breakdown themes surrounding black people and American history. When I hear most yte people discuss certain topics, its comes off disingenuous and just plain cringe. You, on the other hand, seem like you really get it! I actually stopped using TikTok a while ago but loved watching your videos on there so I got so excited when you came up on my recommended videos here on YT! Just subscribed and so excited to see more! You did so well with the longer form style content, just as interesting and engaging as on TikTok
Wow dude thank you so much not only for watching and commenting and stuff but for actually remembering me 🥹 that’s really cool
I have always liked your short-form vids, but I honestly like your long- form stuff even more! Keep up the great work
Thank you so much for the encouragement!!!
OMG I had no idea you were on YT! I saw this vid and was like “that name looks familiar…” I’m so stoked to find this
I AM!! I just started posting more consistently this year!

Thank you!!!!
I was super interested the whole time !! A visual aid with pictures would help tho sometimes !! Super great video !!!!
Awesome! Thank you! I’ll add some in next time
Great video! Super in depth and very easy to digest! 1000/10*
* may or may not be somewhat biased 😉 ❤
THANK YOU I LOVE YOU😭❤️
That was riveting. I usually don't hang in to a video all that long but made it all the way to the end.
This was such an amazing time daisy thank you! Totally enjoyed the long format, came straight from tiktok 💖
AHHH THANK YOU I feel v encouraged rn😁
I have always been fascinated by totalitarian regimes, but none of the those that had existed or are still existing managed to elicit such a degree of revulsion and hatred in me towards them as this fictional Gileadean regime does, not even close. It’s quite a feat how this regime manages to make the North Korean regime appear as a beacon of freedom.
THIS
Great video. I’m not on tik tok so I just stumbled across this video and subscribed to your channel immediately just based on the density of solid info you gathered and the rather charming presentation. Thanks for this. I learned a lot of new stuff =] 💙🌊🌊🏄♀️🏄♂️
Fantastic work! Thank you so much for looking into this in such detail. The quality of this production is insane.
DUDE THANK YOU!!!!!
I’m here because of TikTok, gotta I’m loving TH-cam more. Love the more detailed stories on here. You’re doing a great job
Ahh thank you!! I feel so encouraged 🥹
This was such a good video! I came straight from TikTok and you did a great job!
Thank you for watching!!! I really appreciate it😁
June 2024. It’s starting to feel like Handmaid’s Tale & Idiocracy are SOP manuals.
Unfortunately yeah
SOP?
@ Standard Operating Procedures. It’s the manual that HR gives new employees so that they know the rules.

@@shepardbook thanks!
giiiirl I enjoyed every second of the video💫 you deserve all the support❤❤❤
Thanks for saying that i really needed to hear that today
Hi, Daisy! I am not from tic toc. I am so happy that you came over to the long form!
Your information is exactly something that I was looking for. So, Thank You and please do keep up the good Work !! 😊💖
Your research was so thorough and engaging. I never would have guessed you felt uncomfortable with long form content.
How the aunts treated the handmaids is quite similar to the treatment of unmarried mothers in the Magdalene laundries/mother and baby homes at the hands of nuns in Ireland
Being a sub is great. Whenever I need a video in the background, ur always recommended 💪🏽
Great video, I really appreciated the depth of research you put into this and how thorough it was. Thank you!
Thank you!! And that’s a suuuper valid critique I’ve since gotten an editor cuz I suck at it haha
I appreciate the precision and historical research you put into this video. I hope to see more videos on similar topics
I don't have tiktok. I stopped watching when filming was halted during covid. Idk how I landed here but, tysmfs this information. I'd forgotten how good this series was. 🎉
This was a great video! Very impressed at how much research you must have done ahead of this and I thought this was super informative :)
Thank you so much!
FINALLY!!!!! IVE BEEN DYING TO INCLUDE YOU ON MY LIST OF VIDEO ESSAYISTS I WATCH!1!
AHHHHHH YES!!!!!! I’m def gonna make more videos like this cuz It was so fun for me
In the book, early on, June actually discusses that on the ritual night, Serena allows the household to stand and watch the news with her. She describes how she can tell that each fuzzy channel that passes is a montreal station being blocked. She talks about how every channel available aside from the news is a man singing hymns.
You did an EXCELLENT job putting this together 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you sm!!
I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said! Project 2025 is their manual for an extreme Christian fascist society.
This was awesome, Daisy! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
great video! I could tell that there was a lot of historical influence in the show so it was really interesting to hear the specifics.
I truly enjoyed it. Thank you for the hard work in putting it together.
Thank you!!!
Rewatching from Season 1 after finishing 5. Really appreciated all your insight into the historical connections!
THANK YOU!! I hope the added context makes it an interesting rewatch
This was so good!! I love the long form 💜
Thank you so much!!!
The audiobook on TH-cam is great and I'm listening to it now during my morning commute.
Oh wow, I had no idea it was available on TH-cam. That’s actually awesome! I love audiobooks
So glad you are making the Leap! Great job!
Thank you!!! I’m trying🥹
Thank you so much for such an interesting video! It was easy to follow and very informative. I came from TikTok, and I’m really glad I took the time! Thanks again 🥰
Ahhhhh thank you so much for coming over I really appreciate that!!!
WOW! So fascinating. Thank you for all your work and expertise.
Thank you for this! You did an amazing job putting together the research for this. I knew a lot of these, but not all of them. I appreciate your work to educate us in these dark times ahead.
From one staunch THT fan and true history lover to another: great job! 🥰
So glad I found your TH-cam by chance!
Me too!! With the tiktok ban I’ll be freed up to pour a lot more time into yt!
Loved this video! Thank you for the deep dive!
Amazing work! Well done!
Thank you!
Thank you. You did s pretty awesome job covering a lot of info in a short span
This was really interesting! Thanks for posting
Great break down!
Rarely do I actually sit through a 36 minute video. But this was so interesting. And I haven't even read the book or watched the television series, although I do know the storyline from TH-cam videos. LOL. Thank you so much for this.
Oh wow I feel so honored🥹
14:29 *4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days* is an outstanding independent film that shows a slice of life under Ceaucescu. A naive and helpless protagonist dragoons her roommate into helping her secure an illegal termination procedure
Fantastic video, thank you! I found you on Tik Tok I think you’re fabulous I’m hooked
Yay! Thank you!
I sent this video to all my friends it was so informative and well said, you did so good!!!
You're the best!
Love this literary and historical deep-dive! 👍👍👍💕
Just finished rereading "The Handmaid's Tale" and reading "Testaments" by Margaret Atwood and found it too painfully prophetic! It's plain to see that America just hates women!
I just got Testaments now I’m thinking about waiting. I love horror movies & books nothing has scared me until The Handmaid’s Tale.
Great job! I love learning the history behind books like this!
This just showed up on my feed. Thank you so much for this wonderful historic information! I have heard of The Handmaid's Tale but only a little. I learned a lot and truly enjoyed it! BTW you did a great job😃
Read the book but even more so watch the series. They really go in depth in the series with MargaretAtwoods in put
Truly love you content here and TikTok!
so so interesting, thank you for sharing! please post more of this!!
Thank you!! I will I’ve been wanting to do a deep dive on incels in history for a while too which is sort of adjacent to this subject
The Lebenborn programm was big in Norway..... Sweden wasn't occupied by Germany.... and Frida from ABBA is Norwegian and her Mother moved with her to Sweden, when she was little.
Love this video keep it up!!! (Didn’t even come from TikTok but maybe putting the chapters on there would be possible? I want everyone to watch this!!!)
I'm new and not a Tik Tok user. I am so happy to have found this channel .
Love from Canada.
PS Margaret Atwood is my favourite author.
I love this breakdown. You hit many good points.
This was so good, thank you for sharing all the information. Like you said. it’s sooooo important to understand how racism and authoritarianism starts and functions do you can see it coming. The history lesson on all of the things that Atwood drew from is great! and also terrifying.
This was a MASTERCLASS! Exquisitely done! ❤❤❤
I've only recently heard of this show so i don't know much about it, but i really enjoyed your breakdown! Very informative 👏 ❤
You talk straight- make appropriate references- and do a really good job at illustrating your point. Figured I would drop in the comments and give you your THINGS! Thank you💚
Thank you so much that means a lot to me 😭❤️
This was amazing. Thank youu 🙏🏻
Thank you!
I am here from tiktok. I love your content on history 😍
Thank you so much 😁
Absolutely fascinating. Thank you for making this video! I learned a lot.
This was a great and very well structured video !
Thank u for covering and sharing this! 💪❣
You did a great job. I never watched the handmaids tale, but…OMG 😢
Late to the party but fully enjoyed, videos like this are slowly fixing my attention span.
