I live out in Hawaii. Had a 991.1 S cab and a 991.1 GTS cab. Targa is beautiful, but the cab simply had a much more open feel and didn’t suffer from wind buffering issues.

The 992 is just so good looking. Every trim level from the standard to the turbo and the Targa , very well done. Retro and modern.

Agree! Even the 997 looked kind of lame in a non-Turbo trim. But now the normal "narrow" cars are almost the best looking. Targa beeing my fav :P

Devon, England. All about the cabriolet here. The Targa looks great but the stories of wind buffering in the cab at 80mph and the fact you have to be at a stop to change the roof put me off. 👍

  • @robb5516
    @robb5516 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Great review. To answer your question, a targa doesn’t have the same open air feel as a cabriolet. I’ve had both. And you have to manually store a targa too which eats all your storage space. I think the cabriolet looks better as well.

I'm in Canada and I was converted to convertibles over 10 years ago. Previous car was a BMW 335i Cabriolet, now driving an AMG C43 Cabriolet 4Matic. Why in such a climate (worse than London)? Simple. When talking about modern convertibles/cabriolets, you honestly cannot feel the difference between a coupe and cab when the top is up, even body flex in modern cabs is barely noticeable in normal enthusiast driving (not track). So the 40% of the time when the weather allows it, I'm so glad I went with the convertible. The only other short-coming would be styling when the top is up, which is getting less and less of an issue with modern vehicles, as the undisturbed lines of this beautiful 992 reviewed here demonstrates. In fact, my C43 looks way better to my eyes in convertible form than coupe form, as does the AMG GTC Roadster you reviewed a while back ... a car I pray to be an owner of one day, even though it's rear-wheel-drive only ... and I live in Canada ... totally another story altogether!

911's are all great in their own way. Whats not to love about a convertible, especially when the quality of their roof is so great. That delicious sound and the open air cant be beat in a convertible. That's the feeling of a true sports car. How was that feeling on your test drive when you said... This is a beautiful day! My 2004 C4s convertible still runs fantastic, is plenty fast, looks beautiful, and comes in under budget. Loving life down the coast in HB.

Great review. I am a sucker for the Cabriolet, so that’s what I’d personally go for over the Targa. Although, I’m in Texas and it’s 96 degrees outside today so there is a little more limited time weather wise to enjoy open air driving in my area of the country.

I have a 2021 C2 992 in transit. Convertible. 7 speed. Couldn’t get a Targa allocation for BTO. But fully open beats sort of open anywhere. I ran my 981 GTS with the electric seats on full and the heater on in 30f sunny weather. Splendid.

I just bought an Adventurine Green Cabriolet 992. I love the way the Targa looks, maybe more than the Cabriolet. However, the Targa in the 991.2 had wind buffeting. You could feel it swirling around you. Also, on LA freeways you would have to pull over and stop to put top up on a Targa. The cabriolet will do it at 40 mph and I’ve found on a hot day in traffic when the traffic slows that’s when it can get hot and it’s easy to put top up on the cabriolet. The Targa has to be completely stopped. That’s a deal breaker for me. Great review and look forward to your review of the Targa!

Fun fact: the 992 convertible has more headroom than the coupe. Tried it myself (coupe without sunroof). Usually convertibles always have less headroom than other variants. If you‘re very tall and looking for a convertible, the 992 is the best choice I‘ve found so far.

Well, you asked the question: Why the Cabriolet? I'll try to answer, but bear in mind this is just my and my wife's preferences. {Btw.: mine is with me for a couple of weeks, an I'm loving it (Carrera S, not 4 S, because this is more fun) Aventurine Green. Inside: Iceland Green, black dashboard)}. So, why the Cab? I love to drive open, my wife loves it even more. We are living in Vienna, Austria. One hour drive to real mountains, two hours drive to real s e r i o u s mountains - and mountain roads! Winter - at least until recently - with real snow, even in town. Real snow in the mountains for sure. And I must say, I'm driving the car 80 to 90 percent open, because I love the wind in my remaining hair (I'm approaching 60 now). I only close the top when a) it is too hot - some days in August maybe, b) I drive some longer stretches on the Autobahn - especially beyond the border in Germany and c) if it is pouring rain. A drizzle is no reason to close the top. And why not the Targa? To me the Targa is neither fish nor meat. I do not see a single advantage -- oh sorry, there is a single adavantage of the Targa compared to the Cabriolet: the view back is much better. It the roof is closed in the Cabriolet, you don't see much looking back - but there is a camera, so why bother? And why close the roof except when a, b, or c (see above) is happening. I also think the Cabrio it the prettiest of the three - but this is just my taste - and my wife's. And this is what counts for us, doesn't it?

Thank you George - you made my Saturday - the combination of "Motoman and Porsche" is the best. Yeah cars are getting heavier - not only due to electronics and security. I brought my Porsche to the service last month, there was a 84`911 parked between a Panamera and a 992 - and it way like toy that tiny. That is why are cars that much heavier, they are that much bigger! We want more security and more luxury - that's the way.

I got the Cabriolet because when closed is just as comfortable as the coupe (The roof is in magnesium so it's not a soft top ) it opens and closes in 12 seconds at speeds of 6o Km/h, unless you are a race pilot, you won't notice any difference in driving from the coup, and when it is a beautiful day you just drive without a roof! Last but not least you have very little wind noise even at high speed, in the cabriolet in comparison to the Targa!

In the Porsches, generally. Sometimes takes a longer than usual to pair once you start the car. In BMWs, it can be hit and miss. Sometimes pairs. Sometimes not. Although, I have noticed that issue is becoming less apparent over the past year with newer builds of the system. And yes, the phone does get hot. VERY hot in BMWs. To the point that at least with my Xs MAX, it impacts call quality.

I like the cab because my kids in the back like to stick their hands up in the air as if they are in a roller coaster at speed. Can’t do that with a Targa as there’s glass and a roll hoop there. Also, with the wind blocker up in the cab, much less wind buffeting than in the Targa. Targa also less feel of openness than the cab.

Live in NY. When I turned 50, and thought I’d play with the cliche and get an open top 911-991.2 Euro delivery. Never was a fan of convertibles before, and this is my first. Really like the Targa in principle, but when pressed went with the convertible. First was concerned about the weight of the convertible over the coupe, and the Targa added even further weight. Also the Targa mechanism, while fascinating to watch, seemed a potential failure point, was slower, and required additional clearance and a full stop to activate. The Targa was only available as a 4 or 4S, and I thought the RWD would be more engaging and a little lighter. For this reason, went with an Carrera S Cab and 7-speed. Agree that 4 wheel steer and front axle lift are pretty much essential. And Night Blue is a lovely color. Enjoy the car perhaps more than I thought I would. Maybe there’s something to the cliches after all...

10:55 - I want to put my kids in the back seat, and have them experience the open-top. with the targa, they would be under glass. and the cab is more play-boy than the OG targa, so there’s that too.
the targa is so cool …… but not practical for my needs
