*I am the Mayor after all*
So when you see him in the mirror, death is literally right behind your shoulder looming over you. Nice and symbolic.
I think his appearance in the mirror is a lot more revealing than that
I think it indicates that he’s a kind of a representative or a personification of the game’s morality system, and he shows up in the mirror because he’s always watching you and the choices you make-your actions, after all, are a reflection of your true self that betrays who you really are in a way that can’t be hidden away no matter how many lies you may want to tell yourself
This also explains why so much of what appears in his shack changes and evolves in response to the player making these particular kinds of moral choices, as well as why the man thinks of himself as an accountant-his overriding responsibility is to keep track and maintain a running tally of these choices as you make them, and maybe even to ensure that the appropriate consequences for each choice are carried out no matter what
@@ronjohnrosina yeah, well put and it makes sense. Some loopholes though
@Ethan Rhodes yeah actually this makes even more sense especially when he gives you the choice to do what you want in the RDR1 missions without being mad or getting frustrated in any way
Ethan Rhodes Can you be a little more specific about where you’re picking up a religious and moral connotation, because I don’t see that at all in anything about the strange man, and I didn’t mean to indicate that I did
I never said that he cares about pushing you toward specific good or bad choices or passing judgment, only that he makes you aware of these situations, keeps track of the results, and maybe carries out consequences dispassionately-like an accountant moving numbers around from column to column based on how you handle each “transaction”
Ethan Rhodes No I definitely agree with you in that I don’t believe that he cares about “punishing” anyone for their choices like in Christianity where God sends bad people to Hell
It’s more like, you know, “You do this, then something happens, and I keep track of it simply because that’s my job”
It’s almost kind of meta because it reflects the way the devs approach the morality system in the game, since each event has a choice for you to make and something that happens as a result, but it never pronounces judgement by outright saying that your choices make you a good person or an evil person-like the Strange Man, all the morality system does is make you aware that these critical decisions and turning points exist, and then reflect your own choices back to you so that you can interpret for yourself what kind of person you are
I think the deal with the shopkeeper illustrates this whole thing rather well, as he reaches out to the Strange Man, who in turn informs him that he can choose between personal happiness or two generations-because those are the only two choices that the developers included in the game-and the Strange Man then proceeds to carry out the consequences of that choice and make him as deeply unhappy as possible without regard to the suffering of the rest of the town because all he’s been programmed to do is to handle these kinds of choices and see to it that the world changes appropriately to reflect those choices
But again, yeah I agree with you in that I don’t see any indication that the Strange Man feels particularly good or bad about any of this-all he seems to be concerned with is keeping a running tally of which choices are made and that whatever is supposed to happen as a result, for better or worse, actually occurs as it inevitably must as each decision is made and the results of that decision unfold

I think the phrase "I gave everything for art, and I learned everything and nothing at all" is talking about john and him deciding to kill Micah. Art (short for arthur) helped john give up his lawless lifestyle and made him appreciate his family, but he threw all that away as soon as he decidied to chase after micah. If he hadn't done that rdr1 wouldn't have happened and john would've had his happy ending
I think you are 100% correct here. I never made the Art/Arthur connection before you just did. It PERFECTLY explains John's story arc.
100% YES
I see a similar echo in Evelyn Miller's pursuit of art and wisdom, which proves empty.
Rdr1 has nothing to do with John chasing Micah.
It has to do with John being a member of the Dutch gang.
Rdr1 would have happened no matter what.
Plus, "Art" is not a short for Arthur, I've never seen or heard it before, and it really wouldnt fit with the other "riddles".
And finally, giving that the strange man's shack is filled with paintings and poems... Well, I think art means art.
Okay, but if “art” is short for Arthur, how does the poem make sense. Arthur have everything for John, nobody gave anything for Arthur

Could you imagine if the strange man encountered Arthur and prevented his future death but had some consequences based on your honour that would be truly splendid like a secret ending
Old soul 138 or that’s why’s Arthur had to die, so that John could live to redeem himself you killing Dutch and Jack killing Ross. Thus why the Strange man came to take Johns soul essentially.
Arthur didn't meet the Strange Man, but Bill did. And the Strange Man talked to him about Arthur. It's a camp little encounter that you have with Bill and he says something like: "Hey, Arthur! I met a stranger in the swamps, seemed to know all about you... ALL about YOU..." And Arthur replies something like "yeah whatever" and doesn't seem to believe Bill. The place where Bill saw and talked to The Strange Man in the swamps is probably Bayou Nwa, near his shack. That is a bit creepy if you think about it

10:55 the town crier says 4 diseases that have afflicted the town.
Scarlett fever, desert plague, typhus, cholera.
4 horseman of the apocalypse:- War (rides a red/scarlett horse) Plague (pretty obvious) famine (typhus causes vomiting) Death (cholera causes death very quickly)
Nice catch man love it
There are also 4 horses in the undead nightmare edition of the game, not technically canon but they are based on these themes! War, Famine, Pestilence and Death. Very smart of the devs to include these details throughout the games. 😁
I think there are way more layers to this symbolism.
The third, a food merchant, rides a black horse symbolizing famine and carries the scales; pretty obvious what that one could allude to.
In John's revelation the first horseman rides a white horse, carries a bow, and is given a crown as a figure of conquest; this seems to make reference to dutch, he rides a white horse named "the duke" which sits nicely with the crown metaphor, he carries a bow because he generally sits behind the front line while his "gang" does the front work. Also his whole character is refusing to go down quietly and instead making war (or conquest) with the new world conventions. Instead of running he brings his gang through the heart of enemy territory and brings the fight to those who hunt him.
The red horse lines up pretty nicely with the pinkertons, they make war with the van der lind gang through the course of the story and visually all wear red vests.
Famine could also work as a metaphor for Micah, his actions directly lead to the scarcity of resources for the gang. The blackwater job leaves the gang without food, a bulk of their material possessions, or a stable place to live for quite some time; it could also be argued that the same happened in Valentine.
Lots of loose concepts and rhetoric here but I definitely think the four horsemen were a big narrative device for writing the games
Its incredible how much details you can miss even when you have been playing rdr since the first game. Great video.
This game is insane, it can quickly turn into a horror game if it wanted to.

I mean it is believed that the Black Water Massacre was a trap, probably set by a SNAKE, cough cough Micah
@@kden2925 Nah Micah was a rat after Pinkerton picked him up after Guarma, I think the reason why the heist failed because In Arthur’s journal it said Dutch wanted to buy some land in Blackwater but got spotted by a lawman so that lawman reported it to their boss, and then the Pinkertons set the ferry trap and ambushed the gang forcing them to ditch the money and run. “The water runs black with venom” sounds like it could refer to a tainted pool. The pool being the gang in RDR2 and venom being Micah, the traitorous snake (venom from snakes). The last mission where Micah is the focal point, is called Venom, which seems more like a pseudonym for Micah himself.
Blackwater reference
overcomplicated tbf. The common nickname for Micah is a rat, since well, he is a rat. Venom in regards to Micah is never mentioned, so it owuld not make sense, the Blackwater thing is more realistic
@@gots0359
I disagree
The last mission is called american venom, referring to Micah.
I think too that it's a reference to micah and the game's whole story than john's journey or whatever the video said.
When the
“The water is black with venom” came up I instantly thought of the Black water Massacre
I know I'm late, and this might seem a bit pretentious, but "black water" is 100% a reference to the Bible, where it is said that black water coming from the wells is the first sign of the apocalypse, caused by one of the four horsemen: namely, Pestilence. Which also explains the whole cholera thing.
Also, another thing: Cholera is in fact NOT the last epidemic to hit Armadillo. Because in Undead Nightmare, everyone turns into a zombie, remember? Although it was caused by that green mask, it doesn't necessarily mean the strange man had nothing to do with it.
And in Undead Nightmare, the four horsemen are referenced as well.
I might be interpreting to much here. But if you ask me, all of this is just a reference to the Bible.
@@cedricrickdelsol9767 Undead Nightmare is not canon. My theory is that the Strange Man apeared in Blackwater before the massacre, because of the many deaths that would happen during the heist.

I think that u understood one of his phrases in a different way. Hear me out: "I Gave Everything for art, and I learned too much and nothing at all". The thing is, here's the only comma in any of his phrases. So I think, ART stands for ARTHUR. If u read it like this, it becomes a short story of John Marston's life in RDR 1. He gave everything for revenge, and that's how he died. So there are two short stories of Main characters in the RDR universe. From snow to cave (Arthur's), I gave everything for Arthur, I learned too much and nothing at all ( John)
Yeah I thought that as well, the learned too much and nothing at all is a reference to the games central theme being revenge is a fools game. John learned to run and not look back from Arthur, but ultimately learned nothing at all because he chooses to get revenge on Micah. This starts the chain of events that leads to his and his family’s deaths

Holy shit you’re right
I just wanted to mention: him being the Grim Reaper does also explain to me, why his painted picture evolves during the game. Its unclear at the beginning, but later on, when Arthur becomes sick the painting gets clearer until the finale. Death comes nearer and nearer to Arthur and reveals itself.
Brilliant explanation in the video. Btw: I have watched a couple of your RDR2-videos recently and I have to say your style of editing, the cuts, the timing and usage of music is so good and works perfectly. Beside the core information its just entertaining to watch them, because of this clever editing. Keep it up.
Holy shit
I still don't think the Strange Man is the Reaper. Death only has one job: collect the souls of the living once their time is up. Why would Death care about the choices people made in life when it all leads to the same conclusion?

Exactly, the game (RDR) is Johns game, and strange man doesn't have one.
(that was just a joke)
I dont get it
I think the reason John thinks he has seen the strange man before could be when he got shot in the begining of rdr1 and almost died
That’s quite a good thought to be honest, maybe the reason John didn’t die then and was saved was because the strange man wasn’t satisfied with John yet, kinda like how the pinkertons only killed John only after he had satisfied their needs with killing the rest of the gang.
@JBryan314 since everyone played rdr1 first, and those two things were optional, your comment can be proves wrong
JBryan314 if you understood that rockstar wouldnt plan THAT FAR, then youd understand you are wrong and you should quit trying to justify the comment... John nearly died, Strange Man is immortal, most lire believe Strange Man is death or god and gave john a second chance in life, giving why john remembers him but not quite... you say if you understood canon but i mean do you understand it? I mean most of the fanbase agree or would agree that Strange Man is god/death and gave him a chance meaning John saw him briefly before being “resurrected” by him and also yes both of those pictures/paintings of Strange Man you could find in free roam is optional and if it was actually the reason john remembers the face then there would be a special interaction with it.. otherwise its an easter egg...

I always like to think that John remembers Arthur when I’m playing rdr1
I also like to think that it pains him too much to talk to anyone about it
And that Jack has many found memories of Arthur, possibly some stories that John told him
@@MilestheDirtyMindedGoblin2099 I like this theory since jack wants to become a writer (and if you believe GTA V) he did since you can see red dead redemption by J. Marston on Michaels or Franklin's books
@@MilestheDirtyMindedGoblin2099 This is actually the case. Some dialogue I got in the epilogue was Jack asking about Arthur, and Abigail commenting on how John doesn't like to talk about it. I can't remember exactly what they say, but I'm sure you could find it somewhere in TH-cam.
Arthur was an idea for RDR2, therefore he’s not once hinted or mentioned I RDR1

The style you make your videos make me think you know about the time when everybody was looking for Bigfoot in San Andreas and made videos about it with X-Files Soundtrack
I love how if you don’t see any of this, you still play a roll in all of it yourself. We all have to walk that long walk and when we all get to the end when times up and the man..the strange man meets us all to guide us over..just as john and Herbert and several others have met him in the game..in his sunday best..
I just started playing this game a couple weeks ago. I absolutely am hooked. I love these videos, simply because having an understanding of what has/will happen deepens the experience. I play to get my moneys worth, so spoilers are ok with me. Becoming immersed in the fantasy of gaming eases the burden of real life. Kudos to the poster of this video and kudos to all the other posters that create videos like this. Spectacular work!
You should not spoil it, play first then you do a second spoiled playthrough with another eye.
"Im an accountant" Accountants balances both sides, Death balances life and death.
I got that to like when he says “ oh they will judge you” like his giving him one last chance of redemption
@@jackj9816 "They will judge you" although is a foreshadow of what he knows will happen, means he is not there to judge, just to collect.
Or as they say - only two things in life are certain: Death and Taxes.
Then strange man may be a god
Would not the keeping tally of someone’s bad deeds be an accounting as well? All the strange man’s tasks in RD1 dealt with morality, death is impartial, it doesn’t care about good or bad, it just is and happens to everyone, but you know who does care about those things? The Devil. That’s literally the purpose of hell and it’s keeper, this is also supported by the fact that Herbert Moon cut a deal with him, famously in folklore people cut deals with the devil, not death. Calling him the grim reaper isn’t looking at the evidence provided and is also much less interesting than what he actually is
To anyone wondering why death himself would say “you’ve forgotten about a lot more important people than me” he means that in johns adventures he’s daring and brave and doesn’t think about death. I’m pretty sure not once does John worry about dying in rdr1’s story.

I’ve always thought John, Abigail and Uncle would have went on living had John not fired at the strange man. That John meeting him was his chance at redemption and he blew it by shooting at him so he and his family paid for it. But I never made the three shots correlation until now, makes me think that even more now. He’s some kind of entity, God, demon, grim reaper, not of this world or flesh and blood.
The landscape of each painting in the shack are all locations where the Strange Man has been in the first RDR. There are several that show Manteca Falls, Venter’s Place, and a grand view of the San Luis River, which are all visible from the first time John meets the Strange Man in New Austin. There are several more paintings that show areas of Diez Coronas, which is the region of Mexico with tall mesas and plateaus, which is also the second location where John meets the Strange Man. And there is one more painting showing a wood fence at the base of a forest, which is the final meeting place of the Strange Man, and also where John, Abigail, and Uncle will be buried.
R* writers are really talented to come up with these stories, also this video literally gave me goose bumps
When the guy at the camp says "sometimes this figure appears in the distance" I've heard that a few times. Has anyone tried to hang out in Armadillo and see if the Strange Man actually appears in the distance? I mean with it constantly being brought up you'd think that would be a clue to check it out?
I would also be curious if someone did this
I'm sure someone has already tried. I doubt he's there, but I *really* wish...
Did you try it ?
@@scope7685 yeah I tried it in different locations of Armadillo and waited forever so either it's not an easter egg and he doesn't appear anywhere other than the cabin, or I'm looking in the wrong place at the wrong time

"Oh, but you will, you will be responsible."
Seems like Strange Man was indeed right, John was responsible for the 3 gunshots resulting his death, his wife's and Uncle's
Oh, so that explains why Strange Man says "I hope so, I seem to know you" when John asks "Do I know you ?"
Death knows John because he is surrounded by it, but John does not know Death because he is alive himself.
And Death looks familiar to John because he has seen and inflicted it many times before, but until he dies, he will never *know* it
The blind man also have a quote about the Strange Man. He says that he comes from another world
"Help a blind man"
here you go feller
yOu sHaLL ReCeiVE
"Two strangers seek thee. One from this world. Perhaps one from another. One brings hatred, not so sure what the other brings."
Listen, maybe the rdr timeline is deeper than we thought. Maybe it isn’t suppose to happen in the real world. Maybe he’s from our world, knowing about everything. Because he played over everything. After all, he isn’t that important of a character.Maybe he symbolizes the player who, can choose to do all this or not. He can play as Arthur and complete the story but, he also can simply put the game aside and nothing will happen.
It’s such a tiny detail, but I really like the sync with John’s walk at 11:18, this guy puts as much effort into his videos as the Rockstar devs put into this game
I love how when the strange man tells john he will be responsible for his actions and then says "this is a fine spot," they're standing where john gets buried
