Everybody here is talking about how disturbing it is, but can we take a second to realize that this game is approaching its 3rd anniversary and people are still figuring out mysteries and other in game things. This game is truly a masterpiece.
Dude if they Undead Nightmare 2, it would be so fucked up. All these little side stories are so creepy and really just messed up that it would be a good dlc
Oh ok! I didn’t realise this was an Exorcist reference... I took it as she was probably sexually abused as a child, taken advantage of because she has mental health issues and her mother didn’t want her due to her appearance so probably didn’t care that she was being assaulted. I still really feel for Gertrude though 😞
One can say that the family was broken after the plantation house fire and senior members dead. But the girl we help was fleeing with the family hidden jewelry. She had the money at least to feed her.
Sad truth is, there just wasn't a happy or even OK ending for her. Stay with the family? Abused and neglected. Sanitarium? Abused and Neglected. Penelope says she's going to help? Neglect and left for dead.
@@iceluvndiva21yeah, people are mad at the same cousin for escaping, but for all we know, she found the reality of the sanitariums and decided even if her cousin died where she was would be a far better fate than dying in the sanitarium. There was no happy ending for the mentally demented (or possessed) back then. There still isn’t really, even if the outcome no long is a hole to the head.
I think what happened was she was around Butchers Creak when she was taken by the Murphy Brood and abused in basicly every way possible driving her insane. The things she says like "you better not throw up little girl" seems to indicate like me that she relives the torture she endured while in captivity and now she's just left in a outhouse by her family to rot because they don't know what to do with her. Just my theory but which ever theory out there for this lady is right, its just a downright horrifying and horrific story of a young lady who's life was stolen from her
Talking in the third person (I.e. “little girl”) would be consistent with the type of dissociation that trauma like that can bring on. In her mind, she “saw” it happen to “someone else”.
There are many parts in this game where you can get extra encounters with no hint and honestly I love it. Makes you have to think. On the Aberdeen Pig Farm side quest, you can bring the sister to her mother’s hole and get unique dialogue.
@@watermonsters1810 yeah. Explore it all and you’ll find a lot. I was also playing as a bit of a psychopath so I took the Aberdeen sister to that hole to burn her alive with a fire bottle next to her mother, and I happened along the dialogue. Still torched her but was amazed.
Late to the game but I think she is just young and bored so she is counting the best she learned. The most disturbing part of this is the very last thing she says "You better not throw up little girl." What is the history of why she knows that line. That is so sad because she had to be tortured or abused, by someone for something. Also, I was really hoping she wasn't there endgame after taking Penelope to see her.
This is a theory from another comment: if the outhouse and her connection is with Butcher's Creek then her abuse and trauma was caused by the Murphy Brood. They are sick and likes to torture people. So if she survives that, "better not throw up little girl" line must be from her perpetrators, and that line must have sealed her into insanity and trauma. True or not. Damn that sick.
@@rhyswong8976 I used to hate and be disturbed by the Night Folk but replaying the game again, I have to say that the Murfree Brood are some sick SOB's.
I'm convinced this channel is run by rockstar devs who refuse to stay quiet and mundane like rockstars social media's, so they run this channel to have fun with their creations.
Here’s what I think: The Braithwaites used to have slaves before the end of the civil war. They were here before the Grays (since the old mother said that her family has been here for over 100 years). And the Grays came to move in right next to them which caused controversy since the Grays are the only thing that stands in their way of obtaining more land. Anyway, after the Civil War ended, the Braithewaits started to lose their fortune and the Grays started to take over more and eventually established their own town, Rhodes. Desperate, the mother went to Butcher’s Creek in hope of maintaining her fortune. She consulted with a demon who promised her family riches as long as she offers up her youngest daughter for the demon to possess. She agreed and that’s when Gertrude’s mental and physical health rapidly declined to murderous insanity and physical deformity. That’s also why there’s Satan’s pentagram glowing under a beaten down shack in Butcher’s Creek.
@@achrafabid1541 In the Exorcist movie there is a possessed girl that a priest is trying to save. During the movie she’s aggressive, vulgar, and at times incoherent. She throws up a lot. If you’ve every seen Scary movie 2, it parodies the Exorcist in the first couple of scenes of the movie.
No the comments about "you better not throw up little girl" are a reference to her molestation. This is also why she is being so explicit in her language. She is reliving the abuse. She talks about killing because she wishes revenge.
You know I did always find it strange at how different that outhouse was. Being over the water and open... but I never thought it was part of some demon mystery lol
@@seanwarner9893 I just thought it was a convenient way to keep people from seeing her. It's an outhouse so far out of the way that realistically, you'd use any other outhouse or just piss on a tree. The only other reason to use it is if you really have to shit but every other outhouse is taken. If it was a shed, people might think to snoop into it looking for tools. For obvious reasons, people avoid outhouses unless they've got to use them.
Another theory: - She is not possessed and her look is "normal". She's probably just born with cleft palate and she looked deformed to her parents. Her "scary appearance" is justified by the fact that she's locked inside an outhouse, totally neglected and in terrible sanitary conditions. That would already be enough to explain her mental instability, but she also being treated like a beast her entire life. Nobody loved her and she grown isolated, without any kind of education. That's the simple reason why she can barely count to five. . The pentagram is probably just a stretched coincidence, or an Easter egg.
@@paulgrundy6864 The pentagon's shape is odd. If the developers wanted to put a pentagon in the map, why not a perfect one? But if we have to chose a theory, until a confirmation, yes. I think the proves are not enough clear, so I'll stay with my "folks are ready to demonize everything they fear and what they don't know".
@@BETMARKonTube I think you may be right. Maybe the pentagram is there because Braithwaites tried some sort of exorcism on her in Butcher Creek thinking she might be possessed.
I always thought the numbers were her trying to prove to her mum that she could count and therefore wasn’t crazy because she shouts for her mommy a lot
@Darren McGowand True, any one point on there own could disprove all of this theory, but when you add all the circumstantial evidence including what I said above, it’s pretty conclusive.
even worse when you realize you're loosely related to her death, she was most likely fed once a day considering she was in there long enough for the chains to rust. but without any braithwaites left, she starved to death.
This is insane. I had no idea you could take her there during the mission. Usually when you off track in a mission is restarts it. What hurt me is they could have made her a cabin with a bed and toilet and toys and things to play with and a lock on the door but instead they locked her in an outhouse. 😢. I did know she died though when I was exploring in my four play-through as John. All those workers who were stilling living on and working on the farm had to have know was locked in there so why didn’t they bother to at least feed her.
I think it's because while she was clearly troubled, the Murphy's basically kidnapped her, did unspeakable things to her, disfigured her, turned her into their little pet gollum, and basically made her too dangerous to be around. By the time they got her back, which could have been years, she was basically ruined by the Murphy's and probably would attack anyone at random if she were allowed to walk around. So they're not just locking her away to hide her, they're locking her away to keep her alive and from hurting others. The Murphy's basically made her one of them, but even more feral.
Mentally ill individuals were widely hated and avoided in older times. Most other people, regardless of their class or social status, viewed them with disgust and fear. So it's really not surprising that the workers on the family property didn't care about her, as sad as it is. Not only did the Braithwaites likely "encourage" them to ignore her, they probably just saw her as a feral "monster" that needed to stay locked up for the safety of everyone else. Arthur said it best in his sketch: "World ain't kind to people like her". :(
I always thought that it was a cruel task given to her by the family to ensure she could never escape. Telling her to count to something like 100 knowing that she'd never be able to remember all the numbers. Knowing that family it's not at all out of the question
@@sasousousa5071 I think she is trying to be healthy by counting the numbers that other kids could but she never learned, and there are teacher abuse and "bully" roles, this part Im going to share is just a guess no pointers but I think there must be a role for the absent father and the strong lady her mother is,and a killing threats dialogs she repeats, she heard somthing and went totaly mad after that, she had problems from birth, but could go to school or learn with other kids at home, the problem was she couldnt really, but she wasn't harmfull, after the possible fight and going trough abuse and being bullied she went out of control,I think mother killed dad and she saw and heard all
@@samfisher1964 Yeah. Many of the vulgar lines this video shows her saying are of her saying them to a "little girl". My interpretation is that these are things people said (and likely did) to her. It's horrible to think how many times she was harassed and attacked with her attackers saying those things to her.
Back in the day I thought the counting she did was just her being isolated for so long she started counting the wooden boards on the walls just to try and keep herself mentally sane.
Same, I thought she was locked away because of her disfigurement, isolation can have major psychological effects and can lead to mental instability and even insanity
I always thought that they kept her locked away because she was disabled and she was counting wrong because she never got taught all the numbers in order but then every time i rode past i always tried to free her by shooting the lock ,burning it, blowing the shack up running it over with a wagon etc , i felt so bad for her wish u could let her out
Demonic possession, sentient robots, possible zombies, Death himself, UFOs, time travel, the multiverse... this game is everything a supernatural horror should be. I think it's scarier when it's as subtle as this, without seeing actual monsters and creatures and them exhibiting their supernatural powers.
I’d say the worst part is that, if you revisit that place as John and peak in, you’ll find her dead skeleton there, which makes it worse considering nobody helped or even tried to save her life as she was there possibly starving, dehydrated, and all alone in there.
My guess is the Braithwaites fed her until they all died. She probably has some rations that ran out shortly after or while Arthur died, and then she starved to death. We don't know when the workers moved in, so she was probably dead when they got there and they just never found the outhouse
Also, the pentagram that is drawn by the outhouses points to the location of the pig mask. When you put on the pig mask and go visit her she will comment: "There are many pigs in the city of Vice one two three four five...... SIIIIIX!!!" that's the only part where she counts up to six
If you guys still haven't found out what the numbers means yet... they are the numbers for a combo of the Master lock on the back of the outhouse. If you release Gertrude before a certain event she will join the gang and eventually eat Micah which results in a different ending
I’ve been playing RDR2 since its midnight launch. I’ve played through it four times so far and I still find out things in the game that I never knew where in there. I never once thought about taking her to that outhouse!
That's the real beautiful thing about this game. Played for 2 weeks RT at the camp near Valentin. Got the legendary animals, got most of the satchels too. Walked most of the roads. Did every side mission I could find. Got "summoned" back to camp about 4 times.
It's strange that a dynamite arrow always lands near Nigel whenever I find him out in the wilderness. This buys me some peace for a few days while he puts himself back together.
I always thought she was just trying to practice counting. Maybe she thought if she did a good job at counting, then her family would let her out and maybe love her.
@@samfrancisco6108 yea right it kinda just jumped to a conclusion and gave a very vague answer to the mystery..i remember finding this girl in my playthrough and thinking that i cant wait for someone to solve it but it is very underwhelming
I agree, I love RDR2 but i feel like most of the stuff you discover theres not much more to them beyond "oh thats neat" and then you move on... just cosmetic. They could have gotten some real gold out of the whole Armadillo thing but its just "this place is dead and that cabin over there is weird."
Honestly that's what I still believe. I mean it's possible those theories are right, but it's also possible it was just intended as an inbred girl locked in an outhouse trying to count and nothing more and people are just finding details where there aren't any cuz they're obsessed with this game.
@@Camromulus possibly, but i think we’ve all seen how calculated rockstar is with their easter eggs along with their love to reference the devil and the occult. the combination of the cleft lip (aka the face of the devil in vain) and her eyes (the good eye and the bad eye from the bible) along with the multitude of pentagrams and the number 5 in the game seems just too consistent and detailed to be a coincidence. while obviously the cleft lip is realistically due to incest, rockstar most likely wanted the hints of the occult wherever they could put it in this game.
In my first play through, i went over there with one of the family or staff members, i dont remember who it was. They said Mrs. Braithwaite told her she can come out when she counts to 100, knowing she doesnt know how to count to 100.

@Osiah Riggs 100% agree with you. However, I don't think Rockstar or TakeTwo agree with that since all we get is online content. I would happily pay for a single player expansion of some sort for both RDR 2 and GTA 5.
Second run through of this game and I’m discovering so many new things. Just discovered this Braithwaite secret today, all the way in 2024! Such an amazing game I swear. Thanks for the video! 🤙🏽
I think it's possible Gertrude is possessed, but what if instead Catherine made a deal with the devil in Butcher's Creek (possibly to get back her fortune) and this resulted in her giving birth to a deformed, 'insane' child? That's just my personal theory, mostly because I see Gertrude as less evil, and more just a product of abuse and neglect. Edit: wow, thanks for more than 1k!
You might consider it crazy but strangely its true to some knowledge and some cultures. If Gertrude is her youngest daughter, then she suffered the consequences of the braithwaite fortune. Some dark stories do tell that if a parent makes a deal with a demon by any means, the result would be trading the well being, luck or soul of the last son to be conceived.
@Chris Wilson then why is there a pentagram? You don't know what you're talking about. Almost like they put the poison aspect of it to throw non critical thinkers off. 🤔
red dead redemption 2 is the culmination of all the theory’s evolved around Gta SA, rockstar stated they wanted every playthrough of the game to be different so the players can experience the game differently, that’s an amazing idea if u ask me, if we didn’t live in the golden age of the internet RDR2 Would be goated in secrets
@@thatguy7683 Even the music during riding in the hills is freaking spine tingling. It is scarier than the swamps imo simple because of the unsettling feelings
In fairness, 'possession' is usually a sign of brain inflammation, such as the late stages of hepatic encephalopathy and similar problems, as well as types of dementia. It does, indeed, result in a lack of filter, showing itself as extreme vulgarity, often sexually. Given the lack of medical knowledge back in the day, illnesses and disorders that result in personality changes, like the above, or others, were often put down to possession because they had no other way to explain it. That's why possessed people in fiction act like that.
For those looking for a quick answer: the 5 outhouses in Butcher's Creek have numbers scratched into the walls, 1 to 5. If you draw an imaginary line between them in the order they are numbered, you get the shape of a pentagram. This answer doesn't find any significance in the other numbers Gertrude says.
Gertrude is possibly the weirdest side character I've ever encountered. And she's not even part of the main story. She's just there. But yet, there's such a mystery.
leave a schizophrenic person without treatment and you have someone behaving exactly like her, it is super sad to think that people with any mental disability wouldn't get the help they needed back in those times.
counting like that is a tactic soldiers used to do to keep themselves sane, specially if they were in really tough situations where they felt they were losing their mind, in this case it shows that she is far gone and she is trying to make sense of things, but sure demonic posesión could be another answer.
I actually really like your theory! Maybe a soldier in the area passed through and taught her how to stay calm with his methods, however didn’t have the time to free her. I know a part of the civil war took place around that area of the game. Quite possible.
@@wetcorn5814 She's probably just insane and Rockstar is just doing Rockstar things by making us overanalyze nothing. Again. Theres really not a whole lot to most RDR2's mysteries beyond "oh thats weird" and then you move on... Just my opinion
@@user-dm8kz8ul8h you’re probably right but the issue is the glowing pentagram. Rockstar basically confirmed that demonic shit exists by putting that in the game. Similar to how in gta aliens technically do exist. It isn’t just non canon Easter eggs because there’s far too much evidence proving that it does exist. There’s a character in red dead that says the demon will “take their bodies and their minds” It would make sense if a demon messed with her mind which is why she’s insane.
I know this is an old video, but the solution seems kind of a stretch. Butcher's creek seems like its own independent mystery. All you have that could link Gertrude to it is her outhouse facing north (or more likely facing towards the closest road, for ease of access) and a whole bunch of random numbers she keeps repeating, from which you cherry picked 1,2,3,4,5 - which you could just as easily link to any other mystery that has 5 things in a sequence. Maybe Gertrude is also a vampire, because the vampire in Saint Denis left 5 messages?
Fs she was abused, possessed people were typically trauma victims back in the day and theres a lot of correlation with mental illness with accussations of possession
I always felt like Gertrude’s counting was based off of “Progressive counting therapy” which is what therapist & psychologists instruct patients to do in order to relieve/eliminate forms of stress, anxiety, PTSD, so I thought she was counting just to hold on to a slim thread of her own sanity, like the undead knight at the top of the tower in Dark souls.
She could have been, because that's what the doctor may have told her to do before they all decided to abandon her and lock her up in this outhouse since none of the therapy and medications were working, obviously. Demonic possession isn't something you can cure or get rid of by seeing a doctor. You'll need a man of God, like a Father or a Priest and that too a really, really skilled one as well. Lots of exorcisms fail because of this very reason and everyone ends up dying.
@@bullshark7888 Doubt it. This was back in the day where doctors weren't so gay or soft about things. If you had a problem they'd have a fucking bird peck your wounds or some other unorthodox treatment. I doubt they'd be telling her to count.
@@bullshark7888 on the contrary, it was the priests that didnt work. The psychologists probably thaught her the counting thing and was atleast keeping whats left sane.
There's still more to this mystery and I'm not compketely convinced he's solved this mystery. There is a 3rd set of numbers she reveals. She won't reveal the 3rd set of numbers on her own. You have to trigger the event in a very specific way. After she states the first set of numbers and has repeated the 2nd set. you have to kill her to trigger the 3rd set but you can't kill her any way you want and expect to trigger the event. You must kill her in a very specific way. You have to kill her by throwing a fire bottle at the outhouse. This will cause her to die slowly by burning alive. With her dying breath she will rattle off the 3rd a final set. So without triggering the 3rd set of numbers he's missing a clue which furthermore means his solve is incomplete
That was an absolutely epic presentation! I would like to see Rockstar actually do an open world horror game, maybe even about a character who investigates paranormal and demonic phenomenon, urban legends and myths, set in a time period where such things were thought the ravings of lunatics. But I digress, such a great video, clearly a hell of a lot of work went into it, not just actually taking the time to do the research, but also to put everything together to create the final video. Amazing work!
They already have a basis with the investigation part and LA Noire. They investigate famous cases during that time. I am sure they could do another investigation game no problem.
@Darren McGowand I mean in terms of story, scenery/atmosphere, and side quests. Obviously graphics and gameplay would be remarkably better if they were made today, but they lacked the beauty and mystery RDR2 was rich with
Beau mentions her in the “Feminists” mission. When you escape his cousins, on the way he says “we bury our secrets, bury them deep.” And talks about they had a daughter once, but no one knows what happened to her. When he starts to giving details, penelope talked about her before, Arthur cuts him off and tell him gold is his only concern.
This is the first video I've ever seen of yours, and.. I was hooked from start to finish. The production value of this is absolutely crazy, not to mention the raw immersion. Words can't really do it justice.
Have you ever stopped to think that Gertrude may simply have gone through hell in her house before she was locked up? Think with me. Being someone she was born with mental disability and a cleft lip, she is already doomed to suffer as much as she suffered at the time the game is set. Being someone destined to suffer, the family itself may have done the most cruel things to her. Being, rejection, mainly rape, physical and mental abuse, a few things. What justifies her is the most vulgar person in the game. Someone with such problems, raised in a safe and welcoming environment, is not like that. Of course we have exceptions, but they are exceptions. My point.
@@carlossena1200 Uh, you went way too deep here. I wasn't even calling her creepy; Also don't need to think with you when I can think on my own. I get the story, I get the times. Thanks though
That goes double for me. I had chills run down my spine when he said, " she is possessed". I can handle the music up to a point, but dark secrets like this... I'm afraid I might stay up the whole night without sleep. Edit: please pray for me. I need my sleep. 😰
I was going to pick nits and question the use of the word vulgar, being that it simply derived from the Latin word for commoners, but a bit of research indeed shows it also refers to one making explicit references to taboo topics like sex or bodily functions. Ironically, people of the late 19th century would have used the former definition more often. Anyway, my bad. PS Micah, on the other hand, I would describe as simply vile.
Just think of all the employees at a company such as rockstar. All the names in the credits, do you honestly believe that not a single one of them would want to make a channel about their own products? Wether it be done anonymously or not for whatever reasons, I don't think this theory should be excluded from the possibilities. And there's a ton of other "gamers" out there on TH-cam that come up with content that just seems like only the devs would know about, but to make it more authentic and appeal the their community more, they go undercover as just regular fans like the rest of us. I think this is very likely, honestly.
IKR? If you remove Gertrude from the equation it still works. We know there's something about Butchers Creek having a pentagram so that piece seems to fit in with that area. It's a leap to assume that because her outhouse faces Butchers Creek she's possessed. There's not even anything supernatural in Butchers Creek, their possession/illness was just poison to move them out of their land. Not sure how he's getting to Gertrude being possessed
@@cannibalbunnygirl but the outhouses have numbers on them which as an indie game dev who works with textures and other stuff, is something rockstar had to put on purpose, and the fact that they form a pentagram is a bit much to just be a coincidence

Secrets like this is what can make RDR2 so interesting. Finding out such hidden details give the game a more horror like style to it. It also gives perspective on how things actually were back then, darker than what we try to portray it as.
It also shows that Rockstar fully embraced and doubled down on the myths, legends and creepy pasta that the player community creates around their games.
If only they would put stuff like this in RDO. A weekly mystery would keep players coming back more than just daily challenges. Hell, combine the two and you have a winner.
People actually were God fearing back then.. This just adds to the perspective that the people who make our games and movies are satanic and theres no avoiding it, it's in everything. Can't play a damn cowboy game without being forced into some weird satanic ritual.. damn near every movie on Netflix is demonic. It's tiring, give it a rest.
I mean.. I don’t think anyone really looks at the 1800s too fondly, sure cowboys and a lot of technology was becoming more developed then, but people were actual pieces of shit, and religious people were psychopaths
My theory was that her mother Catherine decided to play hide and seek with her when Gertrude was a young girl. Catherine told her to go into the outhouse, and then when she reached 10 she would come out. Since Catherine wanted rid of her because of her appearance, and because Gertrude could not count to 10, she chained her inside without her knowing. The inability of being count to 10 to 'come out ready or not' (and her possible isolation for so many years) drove Gertrude to madness
to add to that theory, in the manor you have pictures and she didnt always look disfigured iirc. she looked normal and they mention that she at some point "wasnt well"
Me: "I feel a little bad for Catherine Braithwaite, the gang did come out of nowhere and start destroying her business, she's not totally ev-" *sees Gertrude* Me: "So yeah Catherine Braithwaite deserved everything she got, she was pure evil, im glad she saw all of her family die"

Sad truth is, there just wasn't a happy or even OK ending for her. Stay with the family? Abused and neglected. Sanitarium? Abused and Neglected. Penelope says she's going to help? Neglect and left for dead.

Just my theory but which ever theory out there for this lady is right, its just a downright horrifying and horrific story of a young lady who's life was stolen from her
That was my initial theory too
Yeah that sounds pretty realistic. The Murphy Brood is known for sexual assault, torture, etc.
What if when the Murphy brood took her they put a demon in her cause she speaks just like the girl off the exorcist
Talking in the third person (I.e. “little girl”) would be consistent with the type of dissociation that trauma like that can bring on. In her mind, she “saw” it happen to “someone else”.

The fact that you can take Penelope to the outhouse without any sort of hint or clue is crazy to me
There are many parts in this game where you can get extra encounters with no hint and honestly I love it. Makes you have to think. On the Aberdeen Pig Farm side quest, you can bring the sister to her mother’s hole and get unique dialogue.
@@korver_4 Pretty wild. Makes me wonder how many lines of unique dialogue are in this game all together

It's a quote from the movie exorcist.
@@CDodger24 I did not know that and I am good with quotes. However, can't google that and deal with the search lol.
Could be the demon in her telling her not to throw up
This is a theory from another comment: if the outhouse and her connection is with Butcher's Creek then her abuse and trauma was caused by the Murphy Brood. They are sick and likes to torture people. So if she survives that, "better not throw up little girl" line must be from her perpetrators, and that line must have sealed her into insanity and trauma.

"Uh I don't know, I barely know how to read much less count either!"
These are the numbers for the hanime sauce

You know I did always find it strange at how different that outhouse was. Being over the water and open... but I never thought it was part of some demon mystery lol
Lol
5 yrs later...
@@Mr-Trox that makes sense. I was talking about the outhouse in that pentagram town though.
Another theory:
- She is not possessed and her look is "normal".
Its also implied the Braithwaites are inbred so she could have complications of that possibly causing the cleft palate and instability
shes definitely possessed my boy. Strange Man don’t miss
So your telling me, the town her outhouse is facing, just so happens to be known as cursed by a demon, and has 5 other outhouses making a pentagon.

@@BETMARKonTube I think you may be right. Maybe the pentagram is there because Braithwaites tried some sort of exorcism on her in Butcher Creek thinking she might be possessed.

This is more plausible than what is in the video in my opinion. Good theory!

Some people just don't care and honestly with how the family is it was probably one of those "ask questions and never speak again" type things
Meh who cares
I would have done the same if i had a crazy family member :P
Mentally ill individuals were widely hated and avoided in older times. Most other people, regardless of their class or social status, viewed them with disgust and fear. So it's really not surprising that the workers on the family property didn't care about her, as sad as it is. Not only did the Braithwaites likely "encourage" them to ignore her, they probably just saw her as a feral "monster" that needed to stay locked up for the safety of everyone else.
You dare question the Strange Man? I have never seen such foolishness.

For those looking for a quick answer: the 5 outhouses in Butcher's Creek have numbers scratched into the walls, 1 to 5. leave a schizophrenic person without treatment and you have someone behaving exactly like her, it is super sad to think that people with any mental disability wouldn't get the help they needed back in those times.
Have you seen the Wolf Man?
counting like that is a tactic soldiers used to do to keep themselves sane, specially if they were in really tough situations where they felt they were losing their mind, in this case it shows that she is far gone and she is trying to make sense of things, but sure demonic posesión could be another answer.
I actually really like your theory! Maybe a soldier in the area passed through and taught her how to stay calm with his methods, however didn’t have the time to free her. I know a part of the civil war took place around that area of the game. Quite possible.

Gertrude: *Intense Demonic Screeching*
@@edadick6640 what do you mean gay or soft? Would you rather have your arm cut off because you got bit by a dog instead of being properly nursed?

Yes tht can be true too
9:50 hahaha, the guy looking for Gavin in the middle of nowhere cracked me up
There's still more to this mystery and I'm not compketely convinced he's solved this mystery.

My point.

Nah micahs not a person he’s a rat
@Ken Kaneki A rat I tell you!
Micah is a rat
I was going to pick nits and question the use of the word vulgar, being that it simply derived from the Latin word for commoners, but a bit of research indeed shows it also refers to one making explicit references to taboo topics like sex or bodily functions. Ironically, people of the late 19th century would have used the former definition more often. Anyway, my bad.
PS Micah, on the other hand, I would describe as simply vile.
I haven't heard Micah say the F word yet
He's not just an employee at Rockstar, he's the lead master of the Secret & Easter Eggs repartment at Rockstat

Employee at Rockstar ? I doubt about it.
I think this is very likely, honestly.
just to clarify the people doubting they werent being serious
I like how in reality there’s probably no secret and rockstar is just cackling saying there’s always secrets we’ll never fully know

Step 1: Gertrude saying numbers
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Butcher's Creek
Step 4: Pentagram
Step 5: Gertrude is possessed

@@hanknorris5642 weekly things would take way too much effort, but a good idea
People actually were God fearing back then.. This just adds to the perspective that the people who make our games and movies are satanic and theres no avoiding it, it's in everything. Can't play a damn cowboy game without being forced into some weird satanic ritual.. damn near every movie on Netflix is demonic. It's tiring, give it a rest.
I mean.. I don’t think anyone really looks at the 1800s too fondly, sure cowboys and a lot of technology was becoming more developed then, but people were actual pieces of shit, and religious people were psychopaths
Dude ive been playing this game for like 6 years now and i still come back to your videos and learn stuff thats wild.
The hidden message is in other words a sad tale about how gruesomely some children could be treated because of birth defects
Nice theory

Alternate (fictional) explanation: to make sure she wouldn’t escape they locked her in the outhouse. And to keep her occupied they played a cruel version of hide and seek with her: “just count to 20 and then come look for us”. Knowing that she never learned to count properly, she would try again and again to count till death.
And all of her random sick lines came from passerbys.
