Touareg (Cayenne and Q7?) front differential repair

  • This video is in simple steps showing the repair I did to my Touareg 2004 V10TDI front differential. It was starting to make a humming/groaning sound. The noise appeared at 70km/h and disappeared at just above 100km/h. This car had done 175.000Km when the repair was done. The noise probably startet at 170.000Km. I hope this video can be helpful to others with similar problem. I believe it is a fairly simple but timeconsuming task. And best to get it done once the symptoms occures. If going for too long without repair, the crown wheel and other parts besides the bearings will brake.

    My front differential is bad. For those wondering, the sound for me is like a constant low pitch grinding. With the windows down near a wall where you can hear the sound reflecting off it sounds kind of like bad breaks. That is actually how i ended up getting the issue diagnosed. I thought the front breaks had been worn out, so I went to get them replaced and the mechanic said they were fine but the front diff was bad. Another warning light you might see is the running gear workshop warning.

    Nice video! I have rebuilt these for years and have all the specs on the crush sleeve, backlash, seal depths, Torque and gear ratio codes for these ZF differentials. I'm willing to sell the complete business with the specialized tools specs and training.

    Nice repair! We had this problem on our 04 V10, but I was able to find a 6000 mile used diff.

    This is an awesome video! thank you!
    but i have a few questions:
    1) what did you torque your input shaft nut too?
    2) how did you set your preload/end play?

  • @Amer-yl4gb
    @Amer-yl4gb ปีที่แล้ว +1

    to replace that pinon shaft bearing... the nut has to be tightened with the OEM FRICTIONAL torque amount. that means before losing that nut you would need a friction torque meter to measure it.

      I found my pinion shaft bearing was fine. The axle bearings however were shot and just did those avoiding any issues setting the pinion shaft bearing and nut

    Hello, I want to ask how you solved the problem of pressing in the new bearings of the washers... did you put the same one back or did you buy or have a new one made. I'd like to fix it myself too, but I'm afraid of the washers. Thanks Venca.

    I heated my bearings in the oven to about 260deg and they went on with minimal hammering using a wooden block between hammer and bearing to avoid bearing damage. I only did the axle bearings as input pinion bearings were fine

    Don’t you gotta set preload etc and backlash with new shims and measure with the different new bearings

    How much would a mechanic charge In labor to replace my front differential, Porsche Cayenne 05. I can find a front differential online for around 250-300$

    Wow ! Thanks for video! Can this be done with floor jacks or does the car needs to be lifted higher to removed the front diff ?

    I have a pulsating vibration/noise in 8 th gear from 120km/h and up. I was advised it’s the front differential. Does that sound about right?

    Its excellent what you did and how you portrait the repair. But Where can you find the part numbers for the new bearings for pinion and carrier, and also why is it a fairly common failure on this difs to go that way?
    Thank you.

      They start leaking and get low on diff oil. If people changed diferential fluid more often this wouldn't happen most likely. I just bought another 06 touareg and front diff bearly had any oil in. Bearings get dry and start eating themselves up.

    In another video they disconnect steering coupler and two small cooling hoses. Did you, or others who have done this, find that to be necessary? Thanks.

      770Amphicar Yes, I do believe the steering needed to be disconnected. Though I cannot be sure (I replaced the turbos a couple of years ago. Maybe I am mixing the jobs)

    My LHD shaft has come out is there a way of relocating the shaft onto the splines? Do I need to gently tap the end to get the shaft in? I tried by hand to locate it but it's not going in and it just spins. Any help appreciated.

    Is it normal for the right side (shorter) output flange to have play in it? And can this bearing be changed in the car?

    • @opelstu
      @opelstu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's our left side! Going round a right hand bend loading up the left it's vibrating like hell! We thought it was the wheel bearing at first which we replaced.

    Hi Good video, how was the outcome, any noise from gears? I need to do this same job to my 06 Treg. Do you have any info on the friction measurement that should be done, before disassembly?

    • @spoon761
      @spoon761  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nicolas Gengenbach there are no noise from the gears, and everything is still fine. I do not know of any friction measurements needed to be done, though it is recommended to check clearance between gears at assembly, adjusted with shims.

      @@yuriykovalov2936 by hand you have to go very slow slow because is very easy to pass the spec.
      I think i did 18 in pound but not sure do your research .!

    Amazing Video,
    Dear Eng. I have VW Touareg 2008 3.6 ... my problem is sound in front differential when I accelerate the car very fast from parking ( from 0km ) the sound like tk. tk.tk
    When I accelerate the car slowly I didn't here any sound
    I take the car to workshop they told me the front differential need to replace
    Is it true to replace the differential or there is another problem and can the differential fixed
    I hope you can advice me

    • @spoon761

      I think your diff is OK, but you need to fix the rubber holder for the bearing in your drive shaft. Search TH-cam for "touareg drive shaft support bearing replacement"محمد السياغي

      Nice video , I have issue with cayenne that is not moving in drive or rev , its making squeal noise with humming vibration but not moving ...when I locked the front differential - it moves just fine but low gear motion and idling with foot on brake in drive produces similar noise as description before ?? I did jack up front wheels and each wheel spins the other opposite direction as it should. I also have rolling in park when car is off but still works if car is running?? People say transmission , tc , differential , driveshaft , CV ???? No one seems certain ... I thank you , sir .
