Mundane To Monster: This Simple Change Made Our Cheap VW Touareg Unstoppable Off-Road!

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) Our VW Touareg is an Off-Road champion. With locking differentials front and rear and now a decent set of offroad tires how does it perform on the rocks? We put the 4.2 liter V8 and potent 4X4 system through the test on the rocks and mud of Colorado. But does the VW have what it takes to conquer the difficult and steep Colorado mountains?

    Imagine owning a lifted Wrangler with thousands of dollars worth of upgrades, only to watch a Volkswagen make it up an obstacle you couldn't. That would be the most enjoyable part of having the Touareg.

      Mike A Imagine something breaking on that same trail, anything breaking, on a used Touareg and paying thousands of dollars to fix it. Only to find out afterward that you’ll never get that money back, ever. Takes “money pit” to a whole new level.

    • @megarafjogos
      @megarafjogos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That would never happen. A stock Wrangler is better in every way.
      To explain why, we need to get into the old debate of IFS and IRS vs Solid axles. A vehicle with solid axles always has the advantage off road.
      In one of their last videos they show the touareg keeping up with the discovery, but every suv with a good driver can do that on this track.
      The VW is heavier, has worse aproach, departure and break over angles, has less suspension travel (due to the independent suspension), and it's weaker.
      I Could do this trail in rwd only. No need for low range when you are flat and just driving in a dirt road. No need for difflocks when not doing hard stuff, because that can snap a half shaft in no time...
      At 10:43, it shows how bad the AWD is. Spinning the rear left wheel while the other 3 are still.
      The bit at 11:47 is where a jeep would show its colours and keep all 4 wheels on the ground.
      I've done way harder stuff in rwd and reverse than these guys have done with 4 low and difflocks...

    • @krover01
      @krover01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This thing will never go where a lifted wrangler can go. Just because this thing went up a dirt rd doesnt mean it can keep up with a wrangler in the hard stuff. Nothing in this video was difficult.

    • @okigojuryu
      @okigojuryu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@megarafjogos you gonna say those solid Axles are better when they get hung up on rocks, and get completely stuck where something with just ifs breezes through, right?

    • @krover01
      @krover01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@okigojuryu i dont think you understand the difference. Ifs suspension loses ground clearance as the suspension cycles up. Not the case with solid axles. Trust me ive seen it all first hand leading Land Rover rides. The solid axle trucks make it over the obstacle easily, while every ifs truck got high centered. Lots of variables like tire size and driver skill, but generally speaking solid axles win iver ifs offroad every time other than high speed desert racing.

      Well... out of curiosity, I went and Googled how much, on average, does Google pay TH-cam content creators for their ads being inserted.
      The answer is between 10 and 30 cents per view, with the average being 18 cents. Multiply this video's current of nearly 39,000 views so far by 0.18 and what do you ya get?
      Many of their videos eventually go over 100k views, and they release videos virtually every day... across multiple channels, even. I think they're doing just fine :)
      Makes ya reconsider your current employment situation, no? heh

    • @dzelpwr
      @dzelpwr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should amend the above, that pay rate is what advertisers pay Google, but what the content creators get is about 68% of that...

      @@jackchn23, I prefer the 2004 that doesn't have DPFs. Just a couple less things to go wrong, I suppose.
      The only downside there is that some of the parts are specific to that 2004 engine, making them even more rare. The DPF-equipped version was made from 2006-2008. And with the change to DPFs also came the addition of an EGR cooler, a different fuel filter setup and location, electric EGR valves instead of vacuum controlled among a couple other small changes. So, parts availability wise, I suspect there will be more 2006-2008 parts available since they were made for more model years.
      I will say this, it seems that with the change to the updated bodystyle for 2008, the option for the locking rear diff went away, too. I have yet to see a 2008 or newer Touareg with the locking rear diff in the U.S.
      I own a 2004, it has the locking rear diff. I have a customer I replaced turbos on his 2006 and it also has the locking rear diff.
      I would be curious to see how well the TFL Touareg does, repeating the same obstacle with rear diff lock on vs off. Might be surprised at how well the brake-based traction system works.

      Except they put bigger heavier tires on it, so it throws out fuel economy and braking distance. The only benefit here is more tire sidewall for better ride and less susceptible to wheel damage when airing down.

    I have gotten my v6 touareg looking at all sky and I thought I was going to have to call a tow truck. I put it in 4low as I only have the center locker and it pulled straight out of trouble. I was shocked and amazed! I also used to live in Bailey Colorado and the winter trips down 285 are dangerous at best. I saw many a Subaru and Jeep Cherokees slipping toward the cliff side or on it. My Touareg with street tires held its line and I got down the mountain to work everyday with not too many slips and slides.

    I love this video because it shows the abilities of these otherwise considered “soft-reader” German SUV’s. My family has had a couple 1st Generation W163 Mercedes ML’s. Like the Touareg they sport independent suspension, and a low range gearbox. However, in place of a locking diff it has a clever traction control much like the Series 2 Disco. Would love to see TFL pick up one and dress it up accordingly to challenge this Touareg!!!!

    Can yall bring back that series where people bring their vehicles and you go off roading with them. You did one a WHILE back with a guy who had a Dodge Dakota and I thought it was cool seeing other peoples trucks. I bet it is hard to get people but once in a while it would be cool.

    Turning the lockers on *before* you need them, doesn't actually demonstrate anything useful. Should have left the lockers off until you couldn't move forward using just the EDL system (which itself is quite good on VWs), then engaged center locker to show its benefit, and go until it can't proceed, then engage rear locker. As it is, there were zero surprises. We know that a vehicle with center and rear locking diff will go pretty much anywhere.
    Maybe you should try Slaughterhouse Gulch next time. There are a couple spots that will really give it a workout, but nothing dangerous or likely to damage the underbody.

      Having owned a Touareg since last August and taken it through some paces, I don't believe they needed either locker for anything in this video. Mind doesn't have the rear and I've gone up gnarlier stuff than anything shown here with somewhat tamer tires. Yes, the ESP does brake individual wheels, so kinda locker-like.

    I just bought a 2016 VR6 so, I while I do have an off-road option, I don’t have air suspension. I’ve been to Denver, but I don’t foresee me bringing my TReg out there. This gal is really just a suburban driver.
    All of that said, I can really appreciate this video. It really shows what this vehicle can do, especially when enhanced. Perhaps, in the future, I’ll be picking up one of these, if anything happens to my current one. I enjoy my alone time and might want to venture out for some glamping over a weekend.

    Nice video, and I'm glad you guys are having fun! FYI, any stock Subaru or Rav4 can do a trail like this with a competent driver. I used to drive these very same passes in my 2wd Volvo. Lifting a tire is a sign of inadequate suspension travel, not beastly capabilities. ;-) But still, looks like the VW did well. Next stop, the mechanic!

    If this is like the Cayenne air suspension it will either automatically adjust for rough terrain and/or can be done on the fly without shopping. 19mph for the super hi, and the limit for standard off-road level is 49mph.

      Land Rover air suspension is garbage always has been.
      I suggest you look up Cayenne TransSiberia - never had air faults.
      I know many Cayenne and Touareg owners with air. Many being 10-15 years old and still works perfectly and still original. The same CANNOT be said for any jeep I've owned with factory coils and shocks.

    I used to have a 2001 Volvo Cross Country with Goodyear all weather tires and I would take it all over the San Gabriel Mountains in the Lake Arrowhead, CA. area with out any problems. I haven’t seen anything that my Volvo couldn’t handle except some ground clearance issues and maybe the stuck in the mud scene. The Volvo always came through when ever I needed her to. Never had to resort to snow chains eather.
