  • Kawasaki issued a recall for voltage regulators on select general purpose engines. I decided to do the repair myself to avoid transport charges from the dealership. Here's a step by step video on what to do.

    Omg. Thank you. My local dealer was like, what recall? I'm like really. Still haven't called me back that was Christmas. AHs. Thanks again.

    Good tutorial! Once in a while we get a break and can make a repair. On my RK, a starter shield broke, the store got the part and gave me the bolt to install it. A little more involved exhaust brace that was mounted on the motor mount, seemed like more that i wanted to tackle. I have driven the tractor to RK, but it was the dead of winter! I have a buddy with a trailer that was willing to do the transport for free. It's only 11 or 12 miles, but people say I'm crazy for driving it there, lol. Anyway, sometimes you catch a break and with a good tutorial like this you can save that transport, and DIY! Thanks!

      Thank you very much! Getting things done yourself is always preferable, imo. I know it was done right and it always saves a few bucks 🤠👍

    👍👍 Good fix. I was just at my sons place this morning. He has a toro also that wouldn't start. He had already got two new coils for it but wanted the old man there just to make sure he didn't f'k up. Everything went smooth & it runs like a top.

      That's fantastic! Good to let them do as much as they can by themselves. Hardest parenting is letting them make their own mistakes 🤠👍

    A bad Regulator will make an engine do some crazy things! My dads machine had a 27 hp Kohler engine and I maintained it for him. He would never run the engine at the high RPM mark to cut grass. I kept telling him it was bad for the engine and the cooling fins on the flywheel needed that RPM to coll the engine etc. Well one day it wouldn't run. Before it was said and done I had to put a new carburetor and intake manifold on it because they were completely blocked with carbon. The manifold was plastic so no getting it boiled and the carburetor may as well have been a rock. When those to plugged up the Regulator fried so it got one of those too. $600 later it ran like a champ. I told my dad it had ran rich and built up carbon from the low RPMs. The $600 stung enough that he always ran it where it called for. He passed in 2010 and I stall have that Kohler!

      Thank you so much for that story. I was also told to run this engine at full RPM. It sure likes to rev! I really can't wait for mowing season this year. Won't be long 🤠👍

    The new mower still sitting at the dealer waiting for the part to come in and get installed. Yet, I found the part myself and will see if the dealer will let me use it.

    Grea tutorial Sam. I am a firm believer in protecting electrical connections from corrosion. I would put some dielectric grease in the plugs and on the terminals of that regulator and battery. Water will inevitably get to those connections when cleaning the machine or if you get caught in the rain and begin to corrode. I know you will keep that mower a long time and you want trouble free service from it.

    • @samsdoinstuff
      @samsdoinstuff  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much! I knew there was something to put on those connections and I couldn't remember what it was called. I'll do that before my first mow this season 🤠👍

    Great instructible
    Make sure that if you do it yourself, the dealer tells you it won't affect any warranty and is ok with you doing it...occasionally ours throw a wobbly over such things
    I wonder what was wrong with the old one?
    Thanks for sharing

    They really forced you to drive into the dealer? Couldn't just mail it to you with a return envelope? Why would they want the defective part back? I know they just throw them away. Anyway, nice informative video as usual!

    Well now this was a interesting video. I have a hustler X1 with a 60-in deck and the Kawasaki motor. My recall notice stated not to use my machine and to disconnect the negative cable on the battery because Kawasaki said that it could catch on fire if it was running or not. I took mine to the dealer when the part came in and he installed it the same day. But also on my recall notice it was stated the wiring harness had to be replaced also which was done as well.

      Sounds like your recall was a bit more involved! Glad you got it fixed and I'll keep my eye out for future recalls. 🤠👍

    Wait, you have a huge dump trailer, didn’t it come with ramps?

    • @samsdoinstuff
      @samsdoinstuff  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very observant of you 👌 Yes, but they're ladder ramps and not the best for those free floating front wheels. Plus, that 72" deck would barely fit. I also could have asked my brother, but this ended up being the easiest option 🤠👍

    Did you pay for your regulator? Every dealer has told me that I have to bring in my mower for the recall or I have to pay for the part!

    • @samsdoinstuff
      @samsdoinstuff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's ridiculous! No, I just brought in the old one and exchanged it for the new one. The dealer ordered it for me and called me when it was in. I would call Kawasaki.

      I broke down and bought a set of ten(10mm) with a couple of 1/4 drives and 3/8 drives. Deep, shallow, wobble, etc. all on one neat holder. Great idea and it helps keep track of them...I've only lost one so far.@@samsdoinstuff
