    I got extremely fucked up one night and lost my phone in a field or some shit near our house. I told myself I would only get a new one when it really started to impact me to kinda minimise the loss since it was kinda outdated. Anyway, I went 4 months with no phone AT ALL. I would keep in contact with my family over Facebook Messenger on my Laptop but that was about all I had. (my laptop was on life support hooked up to a tv and a keyboard since screen and keyboard died).
    During those 4 months I lost a ton of weight by just walking around more for entertainment, seeing what I could get into or who I could meet. I became close with a lot of the shopkeepers in the area by just shooting the shit with them, hanging back a bit after buying just daily groceries to find out what was going with them. Eventually I started getting stuff for cheap or straight up for free if it wasn't selling (one dude would keep the Tuna and drinks I like behind the counter during panic buying in Covid). At night, I had no distraction. The only worthwhile thing to be doing (when alone :^) ) was to sleep (CRAZY I know.) My sleep schedule became perfect and I still keep to it to this day.
    This seriously transformed me. I always had severe social anxiety but those four months permanently flipped the switch on me. I am a notorious flirt now, I have a great job that requires me to speak to strangers every single day, I can pull off a presentation in front of 100+ strangers no problem.
    I eventually got a smartphone again but even now, 5 years later, I use it about 80% less than I ever did and it has very little hold over me apart from when I am ill or something, which I think is acceptable. I am thinking of going along with this "Dumbphone" movement in a couple years when my contract runs out and this one dies. I grew up with them anyway, so it's not like it will be as much an issue as it is to the younger of the generation.
    I think, if you are on the fence but not sure, just do it. Give it a gamble. Stick it out for a few months and see if you start to notice a positive difference. I STRONGLY recommend this for those of you young enough to have had a smartphone for as long as you can remember. I think the benefits will strike you much more than anyone else.

    The problem with the "just disable or delete non-essential apps" approach is that doesn't work for me. It works for a few days, until my willpower runs out and the tension generated makes me go back to downloading everything and more again. It's like the mere existence of the smartphone calls me to use it, even if I have nothing SPECIFIC to do with it. I just hate this.

    I did the same last year. It is inconvenient at first for sure, but after a while you'll get used to the new lifestyle, and you'll love it! Nowadays, I have to actively search the house for my phone before leaving because I just don't have the desire to carry it around all the time.

    I am on the fence about using a dumb phone and actually the thing that worries me most is music. I have a decent commute to work and like listening to music and podcasts, as well as when I walk/ workout. I have deleted all apps except for banking and Spotify so I am close to dumbphone territory but I would like to know how you listen to music. iPod? not at all? only at home on the computer? CD's?
    Great vid for a greater cause. Looking forward to the update.

    If you struggle with self discipline this is a really good idea, as a temporary measure. Not that I'm a huge range smart phones, but I am a fan of learning to have self discipline. When it comes to Google maps, you'd be surprised how much everything is signposted, you'll learn a new skill of navigation too, it's easier than you'd think. And give you're friends a call if you're missing connecting with them, hearing your voice will mean far more to them than getting a like on a post. Good luck with it

    I realized that simply getting a wallet case helped dramatically - if you think about it, having the screen closed and non-visible reduces distractions exponentially. I know flip smartphones are popular, but sadly they all have outer screens. Getting a fully-closing wallet case for your smartphone could be an excellent and inexpensive (usually ten bucks) first step to getting a dumbphone. I realized this comment I'm writing right now probably sounds obvious, but I was really impressed at how much less you look at a smartphone simply by covering the screen (and adding a one-step process by needing to open the case to see the screen.)
    This thought process is exactly the same with someone dieting - take all your junk food and put it on the very top shelf and keep it closed! If your junk food is right on your desk you'll be snacking all day lol.

    I really wish that what was previously considered a dumb phone still worked in the US. It used to be that a dumb phone did not have the innards to connect to the internet. They made phone calls and maybe had text ability.
    There used to be a button on the side of those phones for volume.
    I'm now phone free.. not even a land line.

    As an option, try the Unihertz Titan phone (not the titan slim or their newer titan), then Root/jailbreak it. Now, DOWNGRADE the Android to version 5 or 6.
    Why? Because very very few modern apps run well - or at all - on such an old version. Yet, you have all of the other benefits of a smart phone. Google maps works "ok" in Android 5, the cameras are fairly modern, whats app runs on andriod 4.4 or above. You can get Instagram or FB messenger to half-way work, but its such a pain in the ass, its not worth it. As are most other apps that wont even install on A5/6. Again, its a dumbed down smartphone that wont get any smarter.

    Actually I plan to do the same and get rid of my iPhone and just get a dumb phone for making calls only and maybe sending a text message once in a while. However I am also struggling with the plan because I am not sure how friends and family will react... I mean, we all are living in social media like WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram... Don´t you feel alone and left outside without all these modern communication platforms? That´s actually my most concern before getting rid of my iPhone...

    • @docholliday1130

      That was my concern too...
      But since I've done it, friends and family know that if they need me, they just need to call. And we've had much better contact as a result... With meaningful conversations and not just pointless memes.
      As for no social media... That's a good thing and has helped my mental health massively. I can still check it on my laptop, but to be honest I know only do this about once a week and I'm still yet to see anything that I've missed out on!!
      Good luck!!

      What I do is having whatsapp on my computer. I turn on my smartphone every week to keep whatsapp on the computer logged in (that is possible since a view months now I believe). In my whatsapp status I have a message that says that people need to call or text if they want to communicate directly.

      Nokia 6300 4g will help you guys in this. It is a dumb phone with whatsapp and facebook, but i recommend do use only whatsapp, so you can easily connect with your loved ones and also its good for your bussiness to be in touch with your clients, Team and customers through this messaging app.
      And you never feel that you are disconnected with the world, your world is your family and friends and see you are with them, both physically and in touch with dumb phone also.
      I also plan the same to switch from smartphone to dumb phone and after alot of searching i found this solution because i must need whatsapp, and yes whatsapp is not distracting me but other apps do, i will surely buy #nokia 6300 in nxt 2 days and get ride from my smartphone.

    I think the main issue for you is “distractions.” I understand the importance of focus when comes to work or study. But for me I’m not a fan of using older forms of technology it’s terribly inefficient. For example - there is a reason why we use light bulbs instead of candles, cars instead of horses, google maps instead road maps, an Apple Pencil instead of pen and paper. For example, I can order my weeks groceries less than 1min on my smartphone. This is 1000 times more efficient than having to jump into my car drive 15-20mins to the grocery store, spend 30 mins grabbing my groceries and waiting at checkout , then drive 15-20mins back to my house, then unload my groceries from my car into my pantry. This whole process can take 2 hours. When I think about it. This whole process seems retardard or backwards. No way am I going back to this method. Hope the helps. You could also delete the TH-cam, Facebook, and all forms of social media apps on your smartphone to achieve the same result.

    • @Sofie72
      @Sofie72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The drive is good for keeping your driving skill alive, feel the wind in your hair/face. See new things, get inspiration. When you get the groceries you get to take in the smell and real vision, find alternatives good deals. Meet people. waiting in line teaches you patience and social skills, carrying the groceries give you strength. Sounds to me like two hours well spent, over staring at the same walls all day. I think both approaches has their benefits/disadvantages and appropriate times or places. Wouldn't call it retarded or backwards in fact i believe the evidence points to the opposite. It`s become obvious that these technologies have a addictive factor (on purpose) and creates a false image of progress. to the determent of our health and humane skills. Keep it going and before you know it, you wont be allowed to have a car.

    • @__beinluv
      @__beinluv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      okay but the question is... why we need to get everything so fast an easy? it's okay doing things that get time, for example i enjoy going to the grocery store to buy food and chat with other people. it's nice to slow down, being disconnected and enjoy the simple things in life. i understand the part of not going backwards with technology but at the same time we spend a lot of time on tech that is not beneficial to us.
