Im 23 and I’m considering getting a Nokia 2780 as my daily, and keeping my iPhone as a work phone. But eventually I really want to get rid of a smart phone entirely. However, I paid $1,000 for this phone so I want to use it till it dies 😅 I’ve already deleted social media to start. I’m just over the screens, drama, and anxiety that is the social media world now.

Same thoughts I'm turning 24 this August and I'm done with the toxicity of social media and the loophole effects of even having a smartphone. Like I have got plenty of books to read that I haven't even touched yet at home, and I remember back when I was a kid I used to love reading books. I remember when I had a dumb phone in my teens and it really wasn't the worst days of my life, ya know being the outcast at school with a nokia, so yeah I just really wanna go back to the days where I could just sit there for hours reading a book or sit staring out of a window just watching the world go by without getting bored.

I’m going to do it. I’ve just got more aware about the massive waste of time that using my smartphone causes to me. I used to write stories and I can’t no longer do it as I don’t allow my self to get bored. In the end I’m 28 and for at least 14 years I’ve been sharing pieces of my life that should have been only mine. I do care about privacy and mental health too. As you said the constant access to informations leads to procrastination.
In Italy everybody use WhatsApp so it’s a struggle to find a flip phone that has this, but I’ll switch to a normal phone as soon as possibile as I’m more aware now of what we have lost as humans… like we can’t even navigate without maps or write down our thoughts in a journal.

I've essentially dumbed down my smartphone to a dumb phone. I've deleted most apps and I'm down to about 50mins of screen time per day. The Lord definitely impressed it upon my heart to start examining my social media / phone usage. Thank you for this video!

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with this topic. I have absolutely thought about what life would be like going back to a regular flip phone but I’m not ready to make the plunge just yet. I love listening to podcasts, music, and audiobooks on my phone so I am at least working to cut out the social media. You have definitely inspired me to move towards a low media life and I really appreciate that. I don’t want my son to remember me with a phone in my hands or to perpetuate the same behaviors as I have had in the past. I just borrowed the Digital Minimalism book for the library so I’m excited to see how I can move forward. Thanks again for another great video and you and your family are always in my prayers!

Thank you so much for sharing Elli! I love what you shared about making eye contact with our kids. I deleted Facebook and instagram over a year ago now and have never regretted it! The cons for social media far outweigh any pros I have ever experienced. I have considered a flip phone but ultimately couldn’t give up group texting with my homeschool group mom friends. So I also recently watched Madison Gray’s video about turning my iPhone into a “dumb phone.” I removed all unnecessary apps and set time limits on things like safari, TH-cam etc. now my husband has the passcode if I hit my time limit so I’m not tempted to ignore the limit. It has definitely made a big difference!

Elli, this is such an EYE OPENING video!!! You’re so right that we need to get used to being bored!! I hate that when I need to decompress I scroll, but afterwards I feel so bad about myself, my house, my family and how I’m not enough. I’m inching closer to deleting my social media. Thank you for a great video!!!❤

I really appreciate your perspective on this and feel the same way about so much. I am a new mom of a 6 month old baby. I am so scared of him becoming addicted to screens in the way I am - I want him to live a full life experiencing nature and the world around him, not live in a virtual reality like so many people do these days. Some of my friends kids watch tv on screens while outside in the back yard….this is miserably sad. So I’m also thinking about doing a detox, and possibly seeing if I can let go of the smart phone indefinitely. I want to be fully present for my children. I’ve spent the last 11 years of my life looking at my smart phone everyday and I don’t want to be on my death bed one day wishing I could go back and put down the screens.
Thank you for the book suggestions.

My iPhone just died and I've finally taken the plunge and switched to a dumb Nokia 2660 Flip. Most of the issues you raised I already hit especially GPS and maps for navigation. I'm terrible at navigating and definitely worse than ever since I just leaned on the iPhone to get me places the past decade.
Very quickly I felt calmer and less stressed about all the junk on my phone pushing out notifications and alerts. I'm closing my social media accounts and just trying to focus on things that are meaningful and useful.

Yes to everything you said!!!! I'm telling you, every time you share your heart I'm just like see there's something else we agree on. Love you, Ellie and everything you stand for! I deleted my Instagram over 2 years ago, or maybe right at 2 years ago. I thought it was just going to be for a couple of weeks, and then a whole bunch of stuff happened with their terms and conditions and I just stayed off. It has been so much better. The comparison bug is so real, and it made me feel like a horrible mom, and person sometimes because I wouldn't be doing what "I was supposed to be" as far as parenting, and homemaking. I felt like I was a failure because all of these other moms had it all together and I was struggling. I know they only share the good, but it was still hard. I just got tired of it. So, I just stayed off. I have Facebook, but I get on there maybe twice a month and for a total of 10 minutes. Lol I love that you replaced it with things like books, and crossword puzzles. Please keep sharing what you are doing. It is so helpful! You have made me want to read more. Lol And I can keep busy with decluttering my house. 🤣🤣

I got off Instagram and Facebook when for my first semester of college this past September. It was the best decision I’ve made! I have no desire to even get back on. I really seen people try colors of not being active of social media since I got off. I recently told a classmate of mine that I was ready to get a phone with no internet so I could really focus on school. Now here you here with this upload, god is really speaking to me!!

Yes, I deleted all of my social media almost 2 years ago and have not regretted it. TH-cam is the only thing I still have as well. (I do still have a smart phone because I haven’t figured out the logistics of getting something else) but without social media it’s a huge difference. Not as much reason to get on your phone. We have a few apps we use for our homeschool co-op and secure means for long-distance connections and I haven’t figured out how else I can do those things.
I have had so much more peace in my mind, my home, my family, my life, and have just been able to be myself-and my family moments feel more sacred and free. I share pictures and moments with my close friends and family via Signal messaging or text. It’s made my REAL relationships more deep and rich and committed.

Amen! Makes sense! I am not ready to give up my smart phone. However, I have been intentional and mindful on how I’m spending my time on it. I don’t do FB. I do IG and TH-cam. I’m intentional to watch only what I’m in alignment with. So much is thrown at us. It takes much discernment for sure! As a Catholic homemaker wife and mother I try to make sure to be disciplined as I can be, cultivating well for God. 🙏🏼

Great topic! No doubt I would benefit from the ‘dumb phone’ as I can feel a resistance to the idea, which is soo telling! And I am pretty low media - never had fb, don’t do social media except TH-cam and Reddit, but I’m still on my phone A LOT more than I’d like. Same thoughts GPS, camera, and music during workout/driving - but it’s almost humorous how I can’t picture what’d it be without and I’m someone that didn’t have a smart phone until 22.

My husband and I recently did the same thing! Our phones look like they might be the same model as well! Lol There are definitely pros and cons, but the pros are so much more important than the cons. I would rather give my kids a happier more meaningful childhood than have everything right at my fingertips. I also have cut way back on our TV. We have a small one and my kids might watch a fraction of what they used to. I don't plan on going back any time soon!

I don't have internet in my home but I do have it on my phone and I've contemplated getting a landline or something of the sorts to have for the house. I'm not a huge non-fiction reader. I did end up reading some of the French kids eat everything book you recommended a while back and I enjoyed the concepts and applied them in my home. I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451 and it's a fiction version of similar concepts that are shockingly similar to the direction I feel like we are heading as a society. Anyways, I thought I'd throw that one out there as a fun read and I'll see if my local library has any of the books you recommended. I actually had someone ask me if people still go to the library anymore 😆 I wasn't into reading growing up but I definitely see the importance now that I'm raising kids of my own. (I'm 28yo so I think there are more of us "crazy" people out here doing the same things, than you think!)

We use social media so that grandparents and other family members who we don't see often, can still keep up with our family and see pictures and such. Also most of our clubs and groups were are a part of as homeschoolers, only post their news, events, assignments and such via FB. I think using social media is these ways is fine but I have to make sure I don't get into scroll mode. I think the danger is in the scroll.

Great plan Elli …. If it works! For you. It’s your own personal challenge… while there are positive sides there certainly isn’t much recourse in a digital working environment…
Can’t imagine how the medical 🏥 profession I am in would deal with… assignments … patient home care contact, clocking in on your phone, & on & on …it’s all a blinding uphill battle!!
This is good for a simple way of life… but the world has geared us actually boxed us in to be codependent on all this media garbage!
    And it’s expensive!!
Discouraging ….cuzz there isn’t a way out for some in the medical profession. Everything !! Is digital..
Like to hear feed back Elli

As I listened to your reasoning, I actually find it admirable that you want to rid your life of social media and wasted time on your phone. But what you talked about is basically just that ~ social media. Why not keep your smart phone for everything else you mentioned and just don’t load any of the social media apps. Then you’d have your gps, camera, be able to pay bills, do your banking, have an amazing library of books, shopping, photos, a library of information, recipes, the scriptures, and I could go on and on. I also have my physicians network of information for myself, my husband, and all of our children. That is how I refill my medication every month. You could have all of these necessary resources on your phone without any of the social media. You don’t have to put anything on your phone that you don’t want to. I just know that there is no way I could go back to a flip phone. I use my phone as my office and my library among with many more resourceful apps.
I also did live without any cell phones, computers etc. Everything has to be done manually. We paid bills through the mail with checks. You had to go to the library for books. We bought maps and kept them in our glove box for our trips. We had a couple of sets of encyclopedias to do our homework and for our information. There were just so many things that were more difficult. We had a landline and I even had a party line when we were first married where I shared the same phone with my neighbors. Life was way different. Technology can be a blessing or not depending upon how you use it. To me it blesses my life in so many ways. I never allow anything against my standards on my phone. I just am grateful for the blessings technology has given me. It definitely makes my life easier.

I thought about this, but I find smartphones too valuable for things such as travel, and I use mine as my computer for checking accounts and would rather not have a computer, and using it as a video camera. I am with you on getting rid of social media. So far I just have Instagram, but I am tempted to get rid of that for sure. I just think putting restrictions on my phone is more worth it than getting rid of it. I think I would rather get rid of the tv and the computer before getting rid of my phone.
