I love Marina's music because there is so much to uncover. This song itself is pretty simple and simply written but it's so well done because it has so many deeper complexities. The handmade heaven she is talking about seems to be writing and imagination. How she envies animals and spiders because they have a set purpose in their existence, but how she feels her purpose when she writes songs. Also how her imagination helps her to escape the world we are in, described with Skyscrapers, into paradise, with trees and nature. I arranged this for the Year 6 chamber choir at the school I work at. It's such a beautiful song, but also so simple - very satisfying to teach. The girls love it and have learned it very quickly. They're going to perform it at their end-of-year concert!
THIS IS SERIOUS. She recognizes that nature and animals innately know what to do and how to live, it's all figured out from the start. But she had to find her way on her own and figure herself out. This song is so lyrically beautiful. I love how she only reveals half of the chorus after the first verse, and as soon as we hear the full chorus after the second verse she jumps right into the bridge. Then you just expect her to sing the chorus a couple times as the outro, but no, she chops together the first half and the second half of the chorus making the entire song feel dynamic. She really subverts your expectations of what pop can be. Ugh love her.
Yes!!! I completely agree. I love analyzing musical forms in her songs. She is so clever and has great taste. I'm a classical music student and that's how I actually got better at analyzing classical music forms...by analyzing Marina's music.
I also love how the chorus is in a lower range of her voice and then the verses are higher, when usually in pop music the verses are in a more comfortable part of a singers range then the harder/higher notes are in the chorus. Again subverting expectations

I love Marina's music because there is so much to uncover. This song itself is pretty simple and simply written but it's so well done because it has so many deeper complexities. The handmade heaven she is talking about seems to be writing and imagination. How she envies animals and spiders because they have a set purpose in their existence, but how she feels her purpose when she writes songs. Also how her imagination helps her to escape the world we are in, described with Skyscrapers, into paradise, with trees and nature. How in paradise (her imagination) people aren't alone, they fly together like birds of a feather.

She recognizes that nature and animals innately know what to do and how to live, it's all figured out from the start. But she had to find her way on her own and figure herself out. She wasn't given her happiness, she learnt, she grew. She has found her own peace of mind intentionally. She has designed a handmade heaven. I applaud her, once again. Marina wasn't just showing us art all this time, only now I realise she was going along with us on our own growth path. Her work was a mirror, and a map.

This song is so lyrically beautiful.
I love how she only reveals half of the chorus after the first verse, and as soon as we hear the full chorus after the second verse she jumps right into the bridge. Then you just expect her to sing the chorus a couple times as the outro, but no, she chops together the first half and the second half of the chorus making the entire song feel dynamic.
She really subverts your expectations of what pop can be.

Yes!!! I completely agree. I love analyzing musical forms in her songs. She is so clever and has great taste. I'm a classical music student and that's how I actually got better at analyzing classical music forms...by analyzing Marina's music.

I also love how the chorus is in a lower range of her voice and then the verses are higher, when usually in pop music the verses are in a more comfortable part of a singers range then the harder/higher notes are in the chorus. Again subverting expectations
