That green corridor at Embankment probably has the last line diagram that refers to the Jubilee stopping at Charing Cross, I hope they keep it around. I like the idea of tourists seeing it and being really confused by it.

Also at Embankment, Bakerloo maps were produced erroneously showing Willesden Junction as "Willesden Green, " which of course also used to be on the Bakerloo before 1979! At the last look, they were still there, but with the errors taped over!!

I was a huge Underground nerd when I was a kid - still am. We moved to London when I was 6 (in 1986) and I had the tube map memorised within a year, largely thanks to my mum and dad giving me a map that they put up on my bedroom wall when I was asleep the night before my birthday. Then I saw a map in a local sports centre (Lea Valley) with a Trafalgar Square station on it. I was desperate to know what had happened to that particular station.
It's only taken me thirty-four years to get round to finding out. Thanks for the video, Jago. You're amazing!

I moved to London in 1984 and I’m still a huge underground nerd as well !! The Bakerloo line is one of my favourite lines because it’s still got the old stock trains and it’s one of the less fashionable lines, if you get my meaning!! Glad to know that I’m not the only underground aficionado!!

Those who live in the area pronounce Wealdstone as it's written, not Wealdstun. However, nobody admits to actually living in Wealdstone- everybody who lives there says they live in Harrow.
As an aside, every book written about The Who, who regularly played at the Railway Hotel where Pete Townshend first smashed his guitar after accidentally poking it through the low ceiling, will call the area Harrow and Wealdstone. The pub itself was (sadly it was demolished some years ago, to be replaced by a block of flats called Moon Court- perhaps in memory of Keith Moon, who was born in Wembley) on the Harrow side of the tracks. Wealdstone gets its name from the sarsen stone outside what used to be the Red Lion pub a mile or so north of the town centre, though what used to be the Case is Altered pub (now Poundland) in Wealdstone High Street also has a similar stone outside it.

      Great knowledge.
I was born in the same hospital as Keith Moon, albeit in 1986 when there was a maternity ward still there at Park Royal/Central Middlesex Hospital.
I like to believe the Alan Moore/ From Hell, linked ancient names and non coincidental/coincimental naming is deliberate. Time has an architecture, or however that line goes..

I remember the first time I heard of Harrow and Wealdstone. It was a story about the awful accident in 1952, where a London bound Express from Perth, ran into the back of a stopping train from Tring at the station having passed through not one, but two signals at danger. Moments later, an Express bound for Manchester smashed into the wreckage. The result was the worst peace time tragedy on the railways, 112 people died and 340 injured, behind only Quintinshill in terms of death toll (in that accident, which occurred during WW1, 221 people, mostly soldiers, were killed when 3 trains collided just north of the Scottish border on what's today the West Coast Mainline)

The down train was heading for Liverpool.
42389 was the tank engine in charge of the Tring local. 46242 City of Glasgow was the loco hauling the sleeper which passed through red signals. 46202 Princess Anne was in charge of the down Liverpool train. This had only been in service for about 2 months, having been rebuilt from the experimental Turbomotive. 45637 Windward Islands was also on the Liverpool train, as a stock movement.
46242 was "rebuilt" but used some parts from 46202.

At Warwick Avenue, the route strip maps on the opening to the Southbound platform still show no interchange at Charing Cross, and Charing Cross and Embankment stations have their names on metal plates affixed to the sign. The same map for the Northbound platform shows every National Rail and Overground connection as "British Rail". These signs are of course set in the lighter weight of Johnston Sans that London Transport was using back then, and are set in "UPPER CASE" rather than "Title Case" as now.

Did you know that if you type Bakerloo, it's not in the dictionary so it gets underlined? I should really add it to mine.
East Lane is the main road near to North Wembley Station, hence the original idea for the name.
Wembley Central is now underground under a shopping precinct and has been since the late Sixties, before that it was a canopied station under a bridge. The only parts of the original station that still exist, are the platforms and the staircases, one of which still has its windows, because it faces outwards. The Wembley For Sudbury name appeared on the original thirties building which was knocked downed to build the new hotel and flats, in the redevelopment of the Wembley Central shopping precinct. There is still an original thirties building on the other side of the road bridge outside the station, used by local businesses. There are also still the remains of tiles from the original station entrance, which had public telephone booths and noticed attached to them, on the wall of a building in the street, next to the current entrance.
There is a lovely little park next to Embankment Station.
The Jubilee Line platforms at Charing Cross are still available in emergencies and can be reached when needed.

Jago, I suspect by the time you have finished going through the name changes, they will have changed and it will be time to start again. That's a beautifully designed London Bus. Instead of being a big square box, it has this retro softer, curved appearance. 01:52 Really, that bus does look beautiful.
Harrow & Wealdstone - two names that send shivers down the spines of those who have read the history and seen the photos of 1952. I first read about it as a teenager, in the 1970s from a book by O.S. Nock. Only the horror of Quintinshill and Armagh compare.
After viewing your past vignettes on the never ending name change goings on, I'm no longer surprised. Even if it is the bleeding obvious. Oh god, here it comes ..... 05:25
    Thanks again Jago, you're gem.

"Only the horror of Quintinshill and Armagh compare."
I'd add Lewisham (1957) to that list. If the driver of the train approaching on the overhead bridge hadn't pulled up just in time .... The Tay Bridge collapse was pretty horrific too; only one survivor - the engine.

In 1915 when some stations were renamed, was that because surplus letters were needed for the war effort ?

    • @henrybest4057
      @henrybest4057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

No, it was to confuse the Germans, if they invaded.😎

    • @highpath4776

@@henrybest4057 That was the Great Western , adding Road to every location (Did Jago ever suss that even Edgware Road falls into that category). If Boris was so keen on Classics why did he not rename every station with its latin name - Stane Street, for example for Tooting Broadway , Watling Street for Edgware Road

At my school in the 1950s, some of us chose to pronounce Wealdstone as Feldstein (fieldstone), as we had travelled to de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steinfeld_(Oldenburg)#St%C3%A4dtepartnerschaften on a couple of school trips to Europe, 1954 & 1956, IIRC?

Because Kennington Road was a fair hike from Kennington.
Err, I think Edgware Road vs Edgware Road vs Edgware beats that...
I've done the Bakerloo from Elephant & Castle up to Paddington, and technically I've done Willesden Jn to Harrow & Wealdstone, but I did those on the overground so I can't really count it. I really like the interiors of the bakerloo stock, the brown version of the moquette plus the leather is awesome, plus the transverse seating unique to that stock is nice. Except the exteriors are really getting worn down...

Despite whatever the developers want to do, we ill always name that crossroads 'The Elephant and Castle'. We will always name it with a smile, for we know its history, we know the pub and we know the people who make it special. You may take London's buildings but you will never take its people or its stories and traditions. Long live the Elephant.
