  • If you've followed along for a while, you might remember Katie and I fell in love with the food at Blue Inc. Café in Launceston. The dinner menu there "Touched by Fire" created by Head Chef, Felix McDonald was something else. . .We ate there three times, every time we were in Launceston and even enjoyed a meal there with our friends, The Vaggabonds one night.
Personally, I love good food and love cooking on the fire. I also love filming fire and enjoy seeing it on screen. . .so I kind of thought it would be cool to combine all that and film something special with Felix.
After shooting our own dinner the first time we went there on the R5, I cut and launched that video to TH-cam as a part of our "Launceston!? WTF?" episode. But I always looked at that feeling seriously deflated. I knew if I could just get in that kitchen and spend some time up close and personal with Felix, we'd realise something I'd be a lot happier with and I'd feel a lot better about the work that had been done there. I know that might sound weird, but it was compelling. I wanted to do the job properly.
It looked like it would never happen, we'd move on from Launceston with no plans to return before leaving. Then, the car broke down, we ended up back in Launceston and it just so happened, that Felix had one service left before he took off to Byron for a couple of weeks. Initially, I'd wanted to plan this properly, shoot when the restaurant was shut, no hassles, just Felix and I, concentrating on food, light and composition. Yeah, that was a pipe dream! 😂
What we ended up with was the only night he had left. And so we shot this in a single evening. A Saturday night service, no less, to a pumping crowd, during a massive concert being held at the stadium next door. That concert then disgorged thousands of drunken people past the front doors as we were trying to film our interview. It was manic and crazy to say the least, but seriously fun.
I'm super grateful Felix took the time to entertain this and welcome me into his kitchen. It was a ball to shoot and a privilege to watch and something I'm really pleased we spent the time to realise.
I hope you enjoy. 🙏 Thanks Felix - an experience I won't forget.

Seemed right to stick a logo on the end for 'em. 😊 They let me completely confuddle a live service on a Saturday night - figured the least I could do is make it so they can use it that way if desired. 👍
