I remember the Lacy fight as it was televised on free to view TV here in the UK. I really have to say that Lacy’s corner were a total disgrace that night. It was abundantly clear he was being outclassed from the 4th round (there were chants of ‘easy, easy’ from the crowd after round 2). After round 7 it was clear that Lacy was done, why they left him in there for the last 5 rounds to take a hellacious beating is beyond me. You can even see in footage of the closing round that in the background the promoter and Calzaghe’s camp are screaming at Lacy’s corner to get him out of there. He was never the same after this fight.

Yup; Absolutely right. He was getting beat up the entire fight. It was ugly... I think if that fight was today, it would have been stopped way sooner. One customer rang and told me that the signal on his TV had gone, and that he was the manager of a pub in Wales who was showing the fight to around 200 patrons. He put me on speaker and I commentated the fight while fixing his signal issue at the same time.

Eubank pre Watson had life n death with a clumsy, novice Nigel Benn who Watson absolutely mugged.
Eubank fought for a world title twice after fighting Calzaghe n he performed great in both fights against the much bigger Carl Thompson who also beat David Haye.
Eubank was in his prime vs Calzaghe, maybe he wasn't in peak condition tho due to having only 10 days to prepare n make weight.
Eubank in peak condition turned it up in the final 2-3 rounds, he never faded.
He crippled Watson in the 11th, decked Collins for the first n only time in his career in the 10th, took Benn out in the 9th.
Eubank was a dangerous puncher n a crafty tactician he held his nerve n stuck to his tactics no matter what, he had a great temperament.
Calzaghe had a great temperament too.
Ive no doubt Calzaghe in his prime woulda mixed it with Watson, Benn, Eubank & Collins, Carl Froch would have mixed it up too.
Technically Watson was the best of them, he done almost everything well, textbook well, he was a real student of the sport n very tough n fit.
Benn was a bit wild n sloppy early on but matured into a good fighter, similar to Dillian Whyte today.
Eubank had the x factor, the unpredictability, streetwise, killer instinct, his record tells no lies, he was the best of the Brits.
Collins paid his dues among a higher level of talent in America tho & it showed.

Perhaps the only big time championship fight where one fighter won every minute of every round.

I loved Joe, and think he's one of the best ever. BUT, the fact that 2 of his best wins are a old -Hopkins, and a very old-RJjr tells you that he maybe didn't go out to face the very best.

There is some truth to that, especially with Jones Jnr, but Hopkins still had a few notable wins after facing Calzaghe.

@@matthewcb1970 There is no truth for Jones to be fair, people just assume he had a reasonable opportunity to fight him. By the time Calzaghe had a few wins and wasn't massively lacking in experience, RJJ had moved up in weight. Calzaghe was naturally much smaller most of his career, compared to RJJ who's move up was somewhat natural.
The point where they had an actual opportunity to fight each other was maybe slightly earlier, by a couple of years. But the result of that fight doesn't change, both still over the hill to some extent and RJJ still beatable and nobody would have give him any more credit. Sometimes things just don't line up, this is one of those times.
