I don't think Joe ever gets enough credit for his iron chin. He took some good shots from Lacy and it didn't seem to phase him. Ring generalship, massive fight IQ, fast hands, cardio all day AND can take a punch with the best of them. Most underrated fighter of all time.
Yep - a true champion needs a chin. Joe got knocked down a few times, so I think it was his recuperation that was special. He could get up like he'd just sat down for a rest. Remarkable specimen.

it wasn't a good fight. Joe's gentle slaps and lots of clinchs from lacy. I think Joe's style of constant barrage of small shots instead of big KO punches, and relative low strength was the reason he spent half of his time in the ring tangled in clinches, he's got to be in the top 10% of fighters wrt time spent stuck in a clinch. When the barrage starts his opponents just step forward into a clinch, joe never figure out how to stop them doing it

As a Welshman, Joe Calzaghe fights were a thing to really look forward to. I was nervous watching this fight live, but in the end we had nothing to be worried about. Joe was truly a Welsh, British and world class boxer.

The looks of disbelief on Jeff Lacy's face at the end of the various rounds, usually punctuated by Joe landing solid, whirlwind combinations on him just prior to the bell, were priceless (!)..... ( eg: 10:12....)....
Lacy stayed right in there until the end. You git to give him that. He took the best Joe had to offer. Out classed for sure but a fighting dog nevertheless.
@@jimbobaggans1564 Calzaghe injured his hand and was going to pull out of the fight a couple of weeks before until his dad convinced him not to. His hands in general were so bad at this point of his career he couldn't dig the punches in like his early career. That is the reason Lacy called him a "slapper" in the build up. It is true but he still slaps hard, haha. You are right he showed guts but didn't stand a chance in those later rounds. His corner should have pulled him out earlier, might have saved his career.
When Lacy fell from the first knockdown of his career, the marketing message on the front of his ring jacket made sense. It said, "Left Hook", and sure enough, that's the punch Joe used on him for the knockdown.

I'd actually put the Kessler fight above this. Kessler was phenomenal, the fight was phenomenal, both fighters knew they'd done their very best and are great friends now... Kind of reminds me of Nigel Ben v McClellan. As Nigel said... They brought him over here to bash me up. Same with Lacey being brought here to retire Joe. It was Joe who effectively retired Lacey that night. I remember being nervous for Joe in the opening rounds. In the remaining rounds I was worried for Lacey. Screaming at the TV for the ref to pull Jeff out of there. Thankfully Jeff didn't suffer the same fate as Mclellan.
Anyone who criticises breland for throwing the towel in for wilder should watch this fight. If Lacys corner had thrown the towel in after 7rounds then lacy may have still had a career after this fight, instead this fight killed his career and lacy was never the same again and became essentially a journey man fighter.
Iron chin and ability to burn. Pure class act and always humble. Battered Lacy made racist bully boy Hopkins eat his own words and did a Roy Jones Junior on Roy Jones Junior. One of my favourite boxers ever should be regarded far higher than some give him credit for. True champion.

This is definitely one of if not thee - Calzaghe's best performance. I used to not rate his punch technicality (slapping), even though he's a tremendous warrior, insane output, speed, heart etc. but here - he punches a lot better, a lot more full on. Never got the credit he deserved. Meanwhile america hyped up any fighter who got a few decent wins as "P4P".
No, p4p is actually listed by ring. Who are very unbiased. Boxers p4p status is earned. Why do you think Joe only made it to ring p4p ranking once with a ranking of 3rd in 2006-7. It's because to rank highly p4p you have to fight opponents who rank pretty high in that list. 95% of Joe's career he didn't do this. So how can he get credit for that? His credit which is given for his actual competitive bouts is more than enough.
He would of got more credit for fighting actual greats at their peak. That's why Hatton get a more credit, for actually fighting pacman and mayweather when they had titles and were a threat. He might have lost but still earned more respect than credit than Joe. No false claims of not receiving enough credit etc.

As a Welshman, Joe Calzaghe fights were a thing to really look forward to. I was nervous watching this fight live, but in the end we had nothing to be worried about.
Joe was truly a Welsh, British and world class boxer.
Most underrated all time great Calzaghe. Masterclass here from Calzaghe.
Most overrated undefeated fighter of all time pulled out of Glen jhonson fight twice the man who devastatingly knocked out an old Roy Jones who calzaghe got dropped by and didn't look to good beating turned down a fight against jermain Taylor a guy who beat Bernard Hopkins years earlier twice these fights were there for Joe at the time, instead froch goes and beats the guys who Joe pulled out against and chose not to fight, explain how we can give Joe the credit he deserves because I'm confused with the lack of knowledge of most fight fans
To go undefeated in 48 with such a raw brawling style is incredible. Joe is in my opinion the best boxer out the UK
The looks of disbelief on Jeff Lacy's face at the end of the various rounds, usually punctuated by Joe landing solid, whirlwind combinations on him just prior to the bell, were priceless (!).....
( eg: 10:12....)....
Legend has it Lacy is still losing sleep at night having nightmeres of Calzaghi coming at him, and waking up in cold sweat.
That version looks like it was more even than it was. Joe absolutely schooled that kid 👊🏿😁
Yeah Lacy was a tough kid, but Chris Eubank snr fought Joe when he could really bang. 👊🏿😁
Jimbo Baggans trouble was it ruined his career never recovered corner should have pulled him out
Gareth Hopkins well said his corner seemed stunned he could have being badly hurt ruined his career that is certain
When Lacy fell from the first knockdown of his career, the marketing message on the front of his ring jacket made sense. It said, "Left Hook", and sure enough, that's the punch Joe used on him for the knockdown.
Calzaghe es humilde, siempre abrasa sus rivales de corazón
Never get tired of watching that 💪
Said it before say it again Joe was brilliant!
The best super middleweight champion of all time
The moment he finally got the credit he deserved !!!!!
alibabazs who cares what Max Kellerman thinks.... anyone who fights or watches boxing and has half a brain can see what an amazing boxer/fighter he was!!!
He beat Kessler when he was an absolute beast!!!!
I rate Calzaghe as arguably the best pound for pound ever. He had the speed of a welterweight, and a quick one at that. A boxing masterclass, without fear and ruthless to the end. Legend.
@@rodd1000 ai. Only prob with that is to be highly regarded p4p you have to actually fight highly ranked opponents. That's why Joe only ever made it to ring mags top 10 p4p list once with a placement of 3rd in 2006/7. All his picking of opponents may have upped his record of 0 losses but fucked up any chances of being a p4p great.
@@rodd1000 Listen to what Nigel Benn has to say upon Joe. He rates him as the best of all of his bunch when they were in their prime, said he was happy he didnt have to fight Joe as Joe would have beat him up!
alibabazs max is an idiot on ward kovelev punches were low but not that low
JOE the boss my admiration from chile
Calzaghe, pure class. Schooled pretty much everyone! Go Joe! Legend.
Gordon Ramsay must have been at every big fight in this era
Great skill, power and stamina by Calzaghe!! No competition.
What an underrated champion !!!
I rate Calzaghe as arguably the best pound for pound ever. He had the speed of a welterweight, and a quick one at that. A boxing masterclass, without fear and ruthless to the end. A true living legend.
RODD -: and he wasn’t a loud mouth like Toney who is vastly over rated by USA fight fans had his head boxed of by tapia may have name wrong
welterweight ???LOL try lightweight
God damn , revisiting this fight , calzaghes finest hour probably but Lacey gets 10/10 for warrior heart .
I'd actually put the Kessler fight above this. Kessler was phenomenal, the fight was phenomenal, both fighters knew they'd done their very best and are great friends now... When you look at the respect a champion like Kessler gives to Joe, and how little he regrets about losing the fight because he knows he did everything he could, it speaks volumes...
Most under credited boxer of all time
The reason Joe doesn't get full props is because the credible names on his resume were unfortunately past their primes Eubank, Jones and Hopkins etc
R Sosa Eubank wasn’t past him prime tho? Admittedly Jones and Hopkins were abit past it but still dangerous nonetheless
@@K68-x5v Remember this was Eubank after he had been through wars with Benn and wasn't the same fighter after the Michael Watson incident
R Sosa yeah I guess, still I hard fight for anyone tho, this is what I mean but discredited like no matter who he beat no one will give him the credit due😂
@@K68-x5v I like Calzaghe he was a great fighter definitely up there without a doubt and always worth a mention reminds me of Larry Holmes another amazing fighter but due to circumstances never got his full credit!
Best Man.
For those who don't rate Calzaghe. Watch Sky Ringside with Nigel Benn. He says Calzaghe was the best of all the champion super middleweights from GB.
Calzaghe dismantled dispatched lacy. Helluva performance
Never get tired of watching this fight. I can't understand for the life of me how Calzaghe had so many problems with his hands lol!
Look there are plenty of better fighters over 1 round, but I've never seen an engine on a fighter like Calzaghe. An absolute legend.
Joe doesnt get the plaudits he deserves, the guy was an animal. Iron chin, piston fists. 21 world title defences before moving up a weight and winning world titles @ light heavyweight. The best british boxer there ever was
Joe and Lennox Lewis and that's the list of the best ever British boxers. I love so many more, but these two are immortals. Arguably world bests.
Fury..?
Though career not over, I would include Fury at this point. But yeah can’t argue otherwise.
Jimmy Wilde?
No
Joe ! 👍👊🇮🇹🏴🥊
Calzaghe is underrated! They never have them in the top boxer list. He beat everybody
Are you really Mr. Beast tho?
Kind of reminds me of Nigel Ben v McClellan. As Nigel said... They brought him over here to bash me up. Same with Lacey being brought here to retire Joe. It was Joe who effectively retired Lacey that night. I remember being nervous for Joe in the opening rounds. In the remaining rounds I was worried for Lacey. Screaming at the TV for the ref to pull Jeff out of there. Thankfully Jeff didn't suffer the same fate as Mclellan.
JOE CALZAGHE IS THE BEST BRITISH BOXER IN YEARS AND NO1 WELSH BOXER OF ALL TIME
He's English...
MEANDMYNINE_tm FUCK YOU HES WELSH 🏴🏴🏴🏴
@@joeyhoward1099 he was born in Hammersmith London. Check his bio. He's an Englishman haha

@@joeyhoward1099 of course you would. You can change your citizenship but not your nationality. Sorry
Why haven't we erected a STATUE to our great Welsh undefeated champion ... the greatest fighter the 🇬🇧 has ever produced .
I thought Joe was going to get merked. Boy was I wrong, Joe was awesome that night.
He got hands like crazy and he slick. Different breed. Him and Floyd to broken hand fighters that defensive punch selection was out this world.
Anyone who criticises breland for throwing the towel in for wilder should watch this fight. If Lacys corner had thrown the towel in after 7rounds then lacy may have still had a career after this fight, instead this fight killed his career and lacy was never the same again and became essentially a journey man fighter.
I remember tuning in live, this and jones jr are my amongst my favourite fights of all time.
My favourite fight of all time. A master class given by the greatest boxer the British isles has ever produced .
don't forget Jimmy Wilde, the greatest little fighter of them all
Iron chin and ability to burn. Pure class act and always humble. Battered Lacy made racist bully boy Hopkins eat his own words and did a Roy Jones Junior on Roy Jones Junior. One of my favourite boxers ever should be regarded far higher than some give him credit for. True champion.
The greatest performance by a british boxer in a british ring.
A total masterclass of the silky art. What a champ, what a story, so you film and TV execs, time for a film of this great champion's life and career.
It's been made
Great fighter , didn't duck anyone as far as I know , if the bones in his hands had been stronger (which he could do nothing about) there would have been more knockouts , true class.
ray albion start of joes career kos opponents all time then chronic hand trouble forced change in style
@@ChrisThornburn-ke5xk yeah true class , at the end of the day you cant change your bones or train your bones they are what they are , so he re thinks and alters his style and reigns unbeaten .
ray albion still a lot on TH-cam can’t give him any credit one idiots latest post why did he retire easy answer being at top over ten years undisputed SM lineal LH champ nearly 39 nothing to prove all time great if he was from USA imagine accolades
@@ChrisThornburn-ke5xk yeah the thing is as well when you have been at the very top of your game in a sport like boxing I can imagine it being very difficult and heart breaking to know when to quit, a lot of great champions have not been able to do it and carried on without actually needing the money .
Joe was my favourite boxer growing up he's not blessed with power but his gas tank and technique is class
The greatest fighter we have ever had.So far
Master class.
Boxed his head off. Lacey is still pulling his stitches out to this day
joe, destroyed them all. i used to rate lacy until seeing joe do his thing, realised he was just another over hyped american boxer.
You must be Brit.
@@jimbobaggans1564 Probably just a realist.
Did you see the state of the Alabama dosser recently?
Joe didn't destroy them all sorry to burst you bubble but turned down jermain Taylor fight who beat Hopkins twice years earlier and pulled out of the Glen jhonson fight twice the same Glen jhonson who brutally knocked out a rjj years earlier, calzaghe chose to fight Jones junior when he was well shot calzaghe didn't fight any top ten fighters 95 %of his career
Dafydd Teisar the walking talking rectum returns with nonsense Taylor didn’t fight at sm until joe had retired
@@ChrisThornburn-ke5xk jermain Taylor beat Hopkins you can't give a valid comment instead of trying to belittle someone who gives valid facts shows your lack of intelligence and how immature you are
One of the best fights ive ever seen.
Had a bet on Joe they made Lacey the favourite easiest money I ever won.
Joe's hands were knackered a long while before this fight and he fought this fight with a broken hand.
Pleasure to watch live,Joe underrated, master class of boxing, proper fighting man with a lot of heart and determination, and retired undefeated after beating all in front of him…
Got help from Superdrugs!
@@timsmith2279 and i suppose you read about that somewhere?,why are so many people jealous of achievements made by these legends?….
@@grahamgibson2527 drug cheats are not legends, nothing to be proud of, they are effectively stealing fame and fortune from better clean boxers, can’t be right can it ?
If in business you make money by cheating you are likely to get locked up and have your ill-gotten gains confiscated. But in boxing you get away with it and considered a hero!
@@timsmith2279😂 🤡
This is definitely one of if not thee - Calzaghe's best performance. I used to not rate his punch technicality (slapping), even though he's a tremendous warrior, insane output, speed, heart etc. but here - he punches a lot better, a lot more full on. I know part of the reason for his 'slapping' later on was due to injured hands, but, he always kinda did it. But here, the accuracy and punching is just beautiful. Definitely an all time great talent.
Poor yank. Out classed by the machine! 💯
Yep most machine-like boxer.
Joe is the man. A true legend of boxing who has somehow gone under the radar. How can people bang on about Eubank, Lacey, Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins as being great fighters when Joe beat them all. And they were in their prime!!!!Joe held the super middleweight title for ten years!! Legend🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
C'mon mate get real, Eubank was not in his prime when beat him, your talking wet. Neither was Jones nor Hopkins. None of the "Legends" Calzaghe beat were on their Prime at time. Lacy and Kessler yes not the others. Big respect to him for his performance stamina professionalism and grit.
Video is incomplete. The highlights of this are about 0.03 of Round One to 2.59 of Round 12.
Otherwise, excellent upload.
The best masterclass of a boxer (who could punch hard but for injuries) against the puncher brought over to bash Joe up. Calzaghe destroyed him over the 12 rounds. But for two busted up hands would have stopped him. I recall fro memory Lacy corner were encouraging from from about round 8 to quit. Lacy was going to be the next best thing since the last best thing.
@@meandmynine_tm9684 I would have to agree , I would of liked to see calzaghe fight Glen jhonson or jermain Taylor, froch definitely fought allot tougher oponents than calzaghe did
@@slick7472 you totally understand some wins are better than others regardless of undefeated or not. And my dig is not at calzaghe but his fans, trying to make him out he's something he's not. He's almost there, but not quite due to questionable career decisions. They're not happy that he might be the best super middleweight off all time. He has to be the best ever as well. When that's not true. To many stars who actually took a lot of risks rank above him. As I've said before, Joe is a perfect example of what most British fighters do, time their career right and carefully pick opponents. Because they have to. When they don't and challenge themselvesbyou end up with Prince nazeems, Carl frochs and Ricky Hattons. All of which I respect a lot more for actually trying. Their achievements are actually equal to Joe's despite the losses.
@@meandmynine_tm9684 I totally agree 100% a career should never be based on undefeated but on quality of oponents
What an infectious smile on calzaghe😁
Joe was so underated, he was best technicle boxer since Ali, his hand speed was awesome, shame he had bad hands, but still one of the best ever to lace em up!!!
Joe smashed the 'Mini Mike Tyson' like he had stolen Joe's favourite toy and spat at his Mum. Never has a belt holding World Champion taken such a beating.
Joe and Tyson Fury .... Britain's two all time great, unbeaten, World Champions.
Disgusting by Lacey corner.
The Welsh Warrior... The best to come from our islands???? Definitely... Took the shots and gave some absolute rockets. Worldclass...
