A note about "no AI": There is AI everywhere, but it's not anthropomorphized. One of the coolest examples is that when Alex requests data from the Roci, it is straightforward and easy to understand, but when Naomi asks, it's all dense math and diagrams, because the AI knows that she is an engineer. None of the characters mention the AI everywhere because it is totally normal to them.
Recall when Holden and Naomi first made out in the cargo bay... Holden was able to very quickly turn off the cargo bay camera, without even paying much attention to the screen. Perfect example! 😀
Also, when Alex was figuring out his slingshot route, he got irritated when the navigation holo-display wasn’t wide enough. The Roci responded to his irritation (instead of requesting further parameters) and gave him what he wanted though he wasn’t actually specific.
Also all the weaponry is AI. Point Defence Cannons (PDCs), self-guided missiles, etc.
@@Dmitriy.0 Yeah, I think the authors were asked once why there weren't any robots in the Expanse, and they said there are robots everywhere, they're just shaped like turrets.
Naomi has a scene early on when they get on the Roci where the ship recognizes her as an engineer when she walks up to a panel.
I’m guessing that’s from watching her actions and understanding that only an engineer would get on a ship and immediately go to a maintenance panel.
Nerdy: These episodes are 'slow burn'.
Me: oh you sweet summer child
"What's with the hat?!"
Such a sneaky callback in a seemingly throw away line..
Amazing verisimilitude!
Right, Holden never saw him wearing the hat.

The Expanse the kind of show to punch you in the eye socket and then you go, "Yes. More please."
That was a fantastic comment. 😆
I'm pretty sure that's a kind of syndrome lol
More like it stabs you in the eye with a needle.
The blue lighting on the Roci is their "red alert" status. Except since Mars is red that's their normal lighing, and blue stands for Earth/enemy.
I always assumed that it has to do with the way blue light wakes you up (thus, all the concern about blue tinged screens at night).
I think Blue used to be to display the green sonar better during some fights. Red is best light that can be very dim so it's like night vision. (when you try to be in low energy mode/stealth), White when everything is normal.
Its the blue alert because nobody has changed the light bulbs yet.
Yes, as the Martians call Earthers "blues." The Roci AI turns that on automatically as it determines when combat circumstances occur. It' also smart enough to know that with its current crew, even other Martian ships are danger.
Alex explained pretty accurately in the episode "CQB" (Season 1 Episode 4).
He refereed to it as 'Battle Mode Lighting', it is for us to deduce that when the lighting is blue, it is a martian ship, and when the lighting is red you are on a earth ship... it stems from colors easily distinguishable from one another, from video games and other visual media.
Red = Mars
Blue = Earth
Makes perfect sense... (To me, that is)
"These episodes are very slow burn" about to eat those words in the same episode, lmao
Klaes Ashford is such a well written/acted character. Particularly in this arc.
David Strathairn nailed Ashford.
They also really beefed up his character in the show. In the books he's a very one dimensional villain.
Both Ashford and Drummer are much more interesting in the show
@@jenniferambrose5603 Definitely. My understanding is that Cara and David were such great actors that they just kept giving them more and more plotlines to keep them around even though Drummer and Ashford are more minor characters in the books.
@@jenniferambrose5603 and that's mostly due to the acting. These two actors were so good, the writers looked for ways to use them.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”
-Arthur C. Clarke
Unfortunately too many use that as an excuse to have magic without explaining even the basics of the technology. I’m looking at you Asgardien Marvel universe. Just call it magic and be done with it.
The "magic" has rules too, but the viewer hasn't been given enough information (yet) to know those rules.
Even in the episodes up to this point, we saw that the Protomolecule has limits.
It was only able to assimilate organic molecules until it took apart the Arbogast over Venus. Then the Katoa-hybrid mentioned that it had learned enough to allow it to disassemble for repurposing, and some time after that it was able to infect the Agatha King mechanical systems.
Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from since .
@@wild_lee_coyote well there was an actual backtrack/retcon involved in the MCU's treatment. In Thor Phases 1-2 it was alien superscience mistaken for magic, in Ragnarok they it was magic of the gods.
Fortunately The Expanse does bother explaining the tech. I’m sooo excited about the next set of episodes
Clarus “skeleton goes through its meat confinement…”, they rest of us, “when your body goes splat…”
😂😂😂😂😂😂. This is so funny. 😂😂😂😂
Basically anything not restrained keeps on moving because of momentum, so the flesh and bone that isn't restrained by his seat belts just keeps on moving. Of course the skeleton has some stronger connective tissue compared to the flash on top, so the flesh get ripped off quicker.
Remember, Holden has never seen Millar in his hat
Right. Miller left it on Ceres, hanging on a hook in a really lingering shot. 😁
This story, all of The Expanse, is so amazing in its ability to reinvent itself each book.
The protomolecule is (and always has been) a specific thing with a specific purpose ("Can't stop the work") and eventually, you will learn more.
With a specific function. "Purpose" is a myth, always has been.
Everything that came before the ring is prologue. We are in the actual story now. The churn
Saying this episode is a slow burn when watching the expanse is like saying tonight sure is a quiet night when working at a psychiatric hospital or emergency room.
Jumping the shark a bit talking about the unimportance of the Ring when we haven't even crossed through it until the very end. Just be a little patient and you'll see why it's important.
The second half of the season is a bit rushed but has some reallh great acting. Ashford is so much better in the show than in the books.
Spoilers:
If I remember correctly, he goes captain ahab crazy in the book or goes crazy under the pressure or something like that.
Filmmaking note on showers; it may seem like an easy gig until you realize that almost all shower scenes use cold water. If they use hot water the steam will fog up the camera.
As an extra, do you want to be under cold running water for 15 takes?!? 😯
Doesn't have to be that cold to not fog up the camera, just not hot enough to fog up everything
This is about the 3rd book and i really wish they would have spent a whole season on it as IMO is one of the best books in the whole series. Shit is about to get strange.
11 minutes in "this is such a slow burn...", 90 seconds later "what the eff just happened??!?!?". The look on Amos' face when Holden tells him "Miller told me." As ALWAYS in this series - the viewing audience is supposed to be utterly baffled as the characters. Ah, hearing your commentary now - yeah, there can only be so many setup questions without any context, I get that. And yeah, all good SF should be how do WE react/deal/inact/whatever with the impact of the maguffin.
So the Ring was "the Work" the protomolecule was doing, it must be important.
Oo!
Clarus hits close to home with some of her guesses! 😊
Yes! My eyes widened at one point.
She’s often on point
23:35 "Not as high stakes as we left" ??? Sure 😂
I think after the first half of season 3, people who were watching the show, wondered where they would go, and at the end you're going to love it. The end of the season is great and I love this 2nd half of the season.
I really appreciated the way the writers were able to build momentum, build suspense, make you ask questions, give you some answers. Some episodes are incredibly satisfying, and others leave you confused and desperate for more. It really keeps the viewers invested in the show.
The mystery of the ring is pretty much this entire book (till the end of the season) so you will not get much in the way of answers until the end of the season, though it's worth the wait. Having a huge mystery like this that might take a season or more to resolve is pretty normal. I don't think I've ever seen a show with a huge mystery that gets resolved in a couple of episodes and this show has teased out even smaller mysteries for even longer so don't expect answers in the next episode.
At 8:27, Holden says, “What’s with the hat?” Remember that Holden has never seen Miller wearing a hat until he re-appeared. In season 1, Miller left his hat on Ceres before going to Eros, where he first met Holden.
I just spotted a callback to S1E1; Amos threatens to get his crowbar and break down the door. In the first episode, Holden borrows Amos's crowbar to get into the XO's quarters. It's implying Amos thinks Holden has gone crazy, just like the XO of the Canterbury.
Love your reactions, it's so interesting seeing this series through the eyes of people who know film and TV. I'm learning and appreciating background extras and make-up FX more with every episode
The Protomolecule is just a vessel that serves to show how Humans (re)act. Its all the things that shaped Human society in a meaningful way. Its like the spitting atoms research, we can build a destruction device or we can power turbines for electricity. Its gunpowder that can be used for colourful celebrations or to propel bullets. The interesting part of this show is always to see how different people adjust to the new information and what they set as their (immediate) goals, including all the reasoning and consequences that then stem form it.
Damn right.
Then there are people in the comments who always complain “boring, not enough space stuff/battles, boring politics, not enough pew pew, what about the little green men, etc” 😂
"that is such a slow-burning episode"... and then the 2nd half kicks in. :)
Monica is not in on the crime because she was talking about winning awards.
The Roci turns on blue lights during combat. Because Mars is the "Red Planet" and Earth is the "Blue Planet" (notice Martians call Earth soldiers "blues"), Martian ships have a "blue alert" in combat situations. The Roci AI goes to "blue alert" when appropriate.
We don't actually have any more information than all the characters, but we know more than most any one of the characters. The big difference is that we are more focused on the pertinent events of the story, while the characters (if we imagine them being real people) are living through a normal timeline where these events are just moments punctuating weeks of mundane life tasks. They have the facts, but they're not focused on them.
Don't worry about the story not being centered on the inter- human conflict. Some viewers are disappointed by this, but the story is basically all about the inter-human conflict, not so much about aliens "magic."
The protomolecule built a ring and Earth, Mars, and the Belt don't know what its purpose is, so they are on their way to investigate, and then Maneo body-checked the door and now something else is going on.
What its function is. "Purpose" is a myth, always has been.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps, a "purpose" is a design constraint, not a "myth." The "purpose" is what allowed Protogen to coopt the protomolecule for different applications, however, it always pushed back to achieve the purpose of its design. A function (build a Ring) could not have been altered to "build a hybrid human."
@@LeeCarlson _"a "purpose" is a design constraint, not a "myth.""_
Of course it is.
I can use a hammer as a doorstop, as a paperweight, to scratch that hard to reach spot on my back, to smash a window to get out of a burning car or as a sex toy. I can use a dirty rock from a nearby ditch to slam a nail into a wall. That is the nature of utility.
One brother can go into the woods to cut down a tree, lug it home, work for weeks to make a nice-looking comfortable wooden chair intending to sit in it by the fireplace reading Shakespeare. As he's finished he goes back out into the woods to cut some wood for the fire. His brother comes in, takes the nice-looking comfortable-looking wooden chair no one's ever sat in, chops it up and makes a fire in the fireplace.
"Purpose" is a myth, it exists nowhere but in our imagination. It doesn't exist in hammers, rocks, trees, wood, chairs, fireplaces, fire, molecules, atoms or organic life.
_"The "purpose" is what allowed Protogen to coopt the protomolecule for different applications, however, it always pushed back to achieve the purpose of its design. A function (build a Ring) could not have been altered to "build a hybrid human.""_
Of course it can since that is exactly what happened. Protogen was able to decipher enough of how the protomolecule functioned to put in "sub-routines" that it followed as it worked toward its goal. The protomolecule already turned people into "infection-happy zombies" (it's clearer in the books), Protogen just figured out how to "suggest the idea" of "improving" the body first and had ways of ordering the resulting hybrid around up to a point.
It's similar to hacking a computer that isn't built to spy on you as it goes about its daily working, someone has just tampered with its programming,... or putting a bomb in a car where turning the key sets off it off, the car itself is just trying to start like the day before.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps, your description of the inhabitants of Eros as "infection-happy zombies" is, while cute, incorrect. The protomolecule was in the process of coopting carbon-based compounds to build the necessary critical mass to instantiate a Ring in our system. And it IS much clearer in the books. I believe we are looking at the process through different lenses and using language differently. No judgment, just observation.
@@LeeCarlson _"your description of the inhabitants of Eros as "infection-happy zombies" is, while cute, incorrect. The protomolecule was in the process of coopting carbon-based compounds to build the necessary critical mass to instantiate a Ring in our system."_
That is what the protomolecule was doing, yes, but IIRC it did so by making the infected people try to infect others by tackling and vomiting on them. EDIT: And the protomolecule's not doing something else when Protogen infect people to make hybrids, Protogen is just able to influence the process so the hybrid is useful to them in certain stages.
So happy we are getting more episodes currently. I always love your guys discussion at the end.
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed your post-episode discussion. I know you recorded this months ago and you've seen the rest of this season and are probably well into seasons 4 or 5 by now in real time, but I thought you both raised good points about the nature of these past 2 episodes. A lot of us were jarred by the many changes from episode 6 to 7. I am excited to see your reactions to the next several episodes, where I think both of you get what you were asking for at the end of this one.
The Holden AI looked very close to his public transmission to Earth when they trailed Eros in season two (which makes sense that someone used this as deep fake input). Even they way he raised his head in the beginning is the same.
As I'm sure you both figured out, the stakes in this moment are that the ring presents itself as a kind of California Gold Rush. Each of the 3 factions are out to try and be the first to claim it as their own, even when they don't know what it is. For example, who's the first to send a probe in, who's the first to send their ships in? How much legitimacy towards ownership do those actions create?
Glad y'all are enjoying the show so much!
The ship colors are pretty cool, and multifaceted in a way. Normal is just with the LEDs and all that, but when they go into battle mode everything kind of flips to blue. It's a bit more intense and has a higher wavelength (and also a good visual indicator). It'll go red if they're rigged for silence (passive scans, visible light, etc) or if they've taken some power impacting damage (red uses a lower wavelength, less electricity, but still provides light). When I first watched the show after having read three of the books I wasn't a fan of the Rocinante's look on screen, but it grew on me. Now it's up there with the Enterprise and Millenium Falcon. I'll say more after you're in season 4 to avoid spoilers.
The book handles a lot of what happens here and in season 4 differently (Magnum PI's Jay Hernandez would have been in it if they'd followed the books), but it always gets there in the end. Differently, of course, but the show gave me the same case of swettybawlz(tm) that the books did, so they did a great job adapting it despite those differences. I'm really glad the two authors were given so much input on the show.
The books also reveal who's after Holden MUCH earlier on. There's a whole setup and all that happens before they manage to get on a ship.
Dawes, in the books, is actually not an incredibly evil person. He truly wants to unite the belt and strengthen its position. They had to play things a bit differently in the show because of the actor moving over to the Foundation series, though. Secretary Errinwright is probably the...maybe second most evil person in the show. So much so that he may have even fooled himself into believing he was doing things for the right reasons. But he didn't want to protect Earth. He wanted power.
As far as the protomolecule, it's obvious at this point it's not just a random microbe because it was programmed to do something. And for whatever reason it was interrupted in its mission. Once humans discovered it, it was allowed to continue its mission...mainly through our bungling. Now that it's finished and powered on, it gives away a little of what it is in how things look. They'll throw more info at you later, but if if you want my personal theory, google "Kerr Black Holes". At the very end of this episode you can see that the Roci is on the other side of the ring because the distortion is affecting the 'star' side. When I first realized what this was, at the 'nutshell' level, my first thought was, "The more things change, the more they stay the same..."
Everybody always gangsta until they actually have to deal with the dead body
Great reaction! Absolutely love the discussion afterwards!
This half of season three was very jarring! But one thing I've always learned is to trust the writers!
Looking forward to the next one!
Amos is definately one of the 30% of people that doesn't have an internal monologue
Ooh boy. That was one of the most interesting and most frustrating post episode discussions yet. 😂
By this point, viewers should just trust the writers.
it wasn't a bad discussion but it's hard to find much fault with the expanse. when it came to their discussion for amazon's lotr on the other hand, it got so critical i couldn't watch anymore. tbf, they weren't the only reacters so down on the show that i couldn't enjoy the reactions. i'm not going to waste time watching negativity for very long.
My favorite Holden-Amos episode
I don't really binge shows - I watch an episode every night or two if I'm interested in a series. Expanse episode 8 changed that, though - I stayed up until 3 am to finish the season, and I wasn't even tired at 630 when I left for work because of how much I was still pumped.
As I have been telling people for years, there is AI in The Expanse. An AI is the reason that the Roci doesn't need more than four (three?) crewmen. It just responds with text rather than using speech.
It does beep in response to Alex when they're alone together.
LOL Nerdy thinkin' the stakes are too low... Have you not learned how this show works yet? Careful what you ask for! Also, the Protomolecule has always been just one thing, except that the humans who found it have messed with it to do different things until the Roci crew finally put a stop to that. NOW it's finally doing what it was meant to have done billions of years ago when it first arrived in the solar system.
The Roci's main system is an AI that keeps track of the occupants, their permissions, and preferences.
"low stakes" hahhaha hhahahha hahhahh hahahahhahah hahhahhaha!!
The greatest thing about the show is how it keeps doing everything exploding into total chaos at an instant. Without it being random or introducing anything new. Just someone doing something extreme that still makes sense for the character and following logically from what's already been established.
Which is probably why it does hit so hard, because viewers can connect all the pieces in their mind to sense the full gravity faster than the characters could ever explain it.
Also, in most shows, you know "yeah, that antagonist could do that thing now, but there's only 10 minutes left of the episode and there wouldn't be enough time for the heroes to fix before the credits". So you know the big thread that could happen if the heroes fail won't be happening. The Expanse doesn't care. They do have the giant world shaking disaster happening three quarters into the episodes and then deal with the massive fallout over the next four or five episodes.
The only other show I remember doing something similar was Babylon 5. But not nearly as often as The Expanse does it.
The blue lights for battle stations are a holdover from submarines. It doesn’t wash out other colors the way red lights would. That’s especially important when the bad guys are all red icons on a computer screen.
I would not be surprised at all if Josephus Miller was partially named after Frank Miller.
I love this season. So much going on and crazy shit! Really like Monica and Cohen on the Roci. Excellent reaction and discussion.
"Your brain just exploded. I've got brain all over me."
Great, great writing. 😀
Nerdy, your background in the industry causes you to watch The Expanse and enjoy the entertainment value, while at the same time you can't help yourself from analyzing the writing and production choices and techniques. It sort of like being in a fine restaurant and getting served an amazing desert, then wondering what the ingredients might be, what the proportions are, how it was mixed, what sort of pan was used to cook it, what was the temperature of the oven, was it gas or electric, how long it was in the oven, and whether the temp was reduced as the baking approached the end. I'm not sure whether this is a flaw or a feature of your reactions. We mainly want to see how much you enjoyed the episode, but that would be, perhaps, a bit shy of a truly interesting reaction. Running off on a tangent about how it was produced is not all bad. It's who you are and what makes your reactions unique among the many who have reacted to The Expanse.
I do sometimes find your (Nerdy's) reactions unexpected, but I think that comes from a combination of your industry-insider take, the other media you have watched, and you being you. :). I may not always agree, but it gets me to consider things I normally would not and I like that. The two of you differ enough for the banter to be interesting. Keep it up!
One thing to remember when watching Monica Stuart is that there is a significant difference between being a Reporter and a Journalist, and Monica falls shy of that mark.
Maybe it's my opinion of Book Monica bleeding through, but I don't see her as being that bad.
@@StarkRG, Monica Stuart is not "bad." She is simply self-serving and has to be convinced not to put her needs above those of others.
@@LeeCarlson That describes pretty much everyone in this universe (and real life, for that matter), it's what makes Holden stand out.
@@StarkRG, perhaps that is the case. However, Monica Stuart is looking for the most sensational story that she can find, and if she cannot find one, she will create one. That's what makes her a reporter. A journalist only cares about what can be objectively observed: when, where, what, who, and possibly how. Why is always subjective and ought to be reserved for the Op-Ed pieces.
@@LeeCarlson What makes you think she'd create one? I see no evidence of that at all.
"Meat confinement" I think you started off with "weird and out of place" it's the status quo I've come to love. X^)
That last scene was sort of a weird perspective. When I first watched it I wasn"t sure whether they were stopped just before the ring or they made it through. It took me a minute to notice the blurred star field looking back toward normal space and that they were through.
curvature of the ring boundary makes it clear, but we're not used to that kind of perspective much in our everyday lives, so it's a little ambiguous at first.
It is important to remember SciFy cancelled this show after season 3 until Amazon saved it.
Holden got AI'd! He should go on strike, I've heard it works
Beard goals? Go full Gandalf!!! 🧙♂️🧙♂️🧙♂️
If you guys love fantastic writing, superb acting, Bear McCreary scores, and decent cgi (for it's time), with plenty of interpersonal conflicts and no perfect characters, you would love Battlestar Galactica, starting with the miniseries in '03. :D
8:41 I LOVE seeing when people figure it out
I think the expanse depicts Madness better than The Wheel of Time TV show
youre right think of it as episode two of a new season and itll fit better in your mind haha
Whoa! Machine gun pace of releases. Niiice. Veddy nice.
This is the start of a new book. 3:6 was the end of book 2. Like 2:5 (Home... Eros crashes into Venus) is the end of book 1
19:57 good catch it his daughter 😂😂😂
The protomolecuel has always been the same thing, it doesn't change. no-one understasnds it. kinda like anything can be used as a club regardless of what its actually designed for
Back when this arc started, based in my experience with the past books' adaptations, I fully expected the final shot of this episode to not show up until the season finale.
The purpose for the Proto-molecule was to build that ring. Those weaponized protomolecule kids were us playing at things we don’t understand because we lacked the context to even conceive of it before hand.
Let’s say this is a few million years ago and the most intelligent species on Earth are chimps and a group of them find a shiny box and start poking at it.
(Paraphrasing)
One chimp hits a button and a light comes on. So it’s a light.
Another hit a button and the door pops open.
So it’s a place to hide things.
Another realizes when put something in it a press another button, it burns whatever you put into it.
So it’s a weapon.
All the while not understanding, or even perhaps have the ability to conceive it’s true purpose.
No monkey has ever reheated a frozen burrito.
The function of the Protomolecule. "Purpose" is a myth, always has been.
That may have looked weird the understatement of the season
There is quite a bit of AI in the show. We see Alex interacting with the Roci and Chrisjen with her hand terminal..
33:10 Most of the time, I think that the things you're pointing out are fine but sometimes, if there's a lot of it, it may come off as nitpicking. I'd say it's a mix between how hard it is to formulate an opinion on the spot and the need to be thorough.
Both of your reactions are wonderful to watch, don't worry Nerdy! People who don't listen don't listen, you usually articulate your opinions and points very well!
Watching Expanse reactions is just so great, I love it! Can't wait for your minds to be blown! 👀😊
So one odd thing with this series and them being based on books. Book 1 Leviathan Wakes ends mid season 2. Book 2 Caliban's War ends in season 3 episode 6. I don't remember when it was announced the show was cancelled but book 3 Abaddon's Gate is really rushed with these last 6 or 7 episodes. Hang in there you'll get your answers.
both of your analysis of the show are very intellectual and some people of other trains of thought have trouble comprehending such analysis so dont trip.my favorite parts of your reactions are the inputs you both have! very intriguing and enjoyable!!
The second half of season 3 is a bit like season 1.
We get a big mystery to start with.
The way the seasons and books overlap bugged me first time I watched it but now my brain has been able to process it.
the first 3 seasons was spectacular got hard to keep up with after that ... still worth watching
Hey Nerdy, just be yourself, that's all you need to be, don't bother with the vocal minority... Well, unless they come with solid arguments. ^^
[SPOILERS]
19:30 hitting the nail on the head with this one...
The perspective is a bit deceptive, but they are in the ring looking out in that last shot.
Best episode of the show IMO.
Nerdy says the same thing now as he sayed back in Season 1 after 2 Episodes.
Is a Show about Humans who has conflicts. The Protomonecule is just a catalysator for this conflicts.
Most People in reactions want to know as much as possible to "analyse" whats going on. But in this stage Nerdy cant.
Just let me tell you...
You will know whats going on.
You will be more (happy) surprised then you thought!
This was not the last time you feel this way!!!
(and that's the reason i love your Reactions on this show!)
Just keep on rambling and ignore the haters, Nerdy
We just want to keep going too! Can’t we release these faster? Lol
For what it’s worth, it’s odd to call Volovodov a priest. Minister is the usual title in that denomination as she has a responsibility to lead and care for people. Elder is also a common term in Methodist circles. Priest suggests a special connection to the divine.
Methodism, Volovodov’s denomination, at least in the version in our world, uses a “priesthood of all believers” where everyone has a direct connection to God.
Priest is usually a title for the Catholic and Orthodox and similar since there the priesthood is required for connection to the divine and priests are not just experts in religious matters (which is also the role of a rabbi) but people with delegated divine authority.
D&D clerics (and paladins for that matter) are priests. As a Methodist, Volovodov would just claim to have a high lore (religion) skill and would hold that anyone can Cure Light Wounds if they had but faith.
I think she goes by "pastor" IIRC.
Gonna take till ep10 to get the full context ;)
I love theExpanse.
I don't find your analysis irritating at all. It's interesting to peer into your thoughts process. 🤟😎
As far as I remember the second part of this season is a bit rushed because the show was cancelled and this was supposed to be the final season. So a lot of plot had to be put into the episodes.
So glad someone already told them this so I don't have to. 'cause I'm not a patreon member, I don't know if they're live reacting again or if these are all pre-recorded months ago? 'suppose we'll find out if they reference this knowledge in a reaction before the season ends.
But yeah, around the mid-season 'finale' they found out SyFy wasn't renewing the show this whole arc was supposed to work as a finale if needed or a promotion to get the show picked back-up.
@@2o7o7dragon months ago. They've mentioned it a couple of times.
That's an easy conclusion to jump to, but it's wrong. If you think about it a bit more, you should easily realize that it doesn't make sense, because season 3 was planned, written, and filmed way before anyone knew that SyFy wouldn't renew the show. There's an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunner Naren Shankar where he explains why they adapted book three in just 7 episodes. Just to remind everyone of the timeline, SyFy announced the "cancellation" May 10th, 2018, after broadcast of S03E05 "Triple Point". And already 16 days later, on May 26th, 2018, it was announced that Amazon would be picking up the show. I put "cancellation" in quotes because the show belongs to Alcon Entertainment, not SyFy and not Amazon. To quote one of Alcon's CEOs (from an interview with Variety): "Unlike the way that it's phrased, which I've always had an issue with, in the press, they [SyFy] didn't cancel the show, because they couldn't cancel the show, we own the show, it's ours. They couldn't cancel our show. What they did, to be very specific, is they elected not to continue to license the show for their rights based upon the contract we had."
@@amarokorama Regarding Naren Shankar's comments, don't forget that everything spoken in public is marketing and not necessarily the whole truth. You'd put a positive spin on it in his shoes. Sure, they didn't know for sure, in advance, that SyFy would not renew for a 4th season, but Naren and the folks at Alcon aren't stupid. They would have seen it coming - at least as a possibility - and I'm certain that fact played into their decisions regarding the adaptation, even if it wasn't the sole factor. Smart folks anticipate problems before they happen. Failing to plan is planning to fail, and all that. He said "for a lot of reasons" they compressed book 3. That leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
@@MattNolanCustom You're the one putting spin on things here. It's extremely silly to dismiss the showrunner's public statements as "marketing", simply because they contradict your beliefs. There's no reason why he couldn't have said "we had a feeling that SyFy would drop out, so we decided to wrap things up", if that had indeed been the case. Which it wasn't. He also never said it now that the show is truly over (or on indefinite hiatus). Neither have any of his colleagues, like Ty Franck or Daniel Abraham.
Shankar is also on record saying that he couldn't adapt book 1 in the 10 episodes they were given for season 1. That's why they had the awkward mid-season "book changes". Season 3 allowed them to finally fix that, and align the seasons to the books again. Speaking of Abraham, he once even suggested skipping book 3 entirely! From a CBR interview about the series finale:
Q: Do you remember any moments in the writers room that stirred up a considerable amount of debate in adapting the story for television and diverging from the source material?
Naren Shankar: There were several, I would say, and they weren't gigantic, they were all situational.
(...) I remember when we were getting to Abaddon's Gate, I was talking about doing the adaptation and Daniel goes, "Well, we could just skip that book entirely," and I was like "...What?!" [laughs] He went, "It's very intellectualized and academic." [laughs]
AI james holden already claimed ownership of the ring for belt so they are fighting over it. everyone is trying to be first to understand/own it
Wow great prediction that’s all I’ll say
You're learning about the proto molecule and the ring through the characters.
It has a single purpose, but humans are trying to understand and use it for different things.
It has a function. "Purpose" is a myth, always has been.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps weird thing to get all semantic about, but ok.
@@thedachmo It's not semantics. I can use a hammer for many things, that's utility, and a hammer can play a role in a system (e.g. an assembly line), that's function, meanwhile I can pick a dirty rock from a ditch to slam a nail into a wall with, that's also utility. "Purpose" is just imaginary, it's us humans being narcissistic.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps sure, you can take that view of humanity's belief in purpose if you like.
But since I am talking about imaginary alien technology:
"the intention, aim or function of something; the thing that something is supposed to achieve", ie the definition of "purpose" in this context applies here.
@@thedachmo _"sure, you can take that view of humanity's belief in purpose if you like."_
Well, it's a logical conclusion based on the facts rather than a preference.
_"But since I am talking about imaginary alien technology: "the intention, aim or function of something; the thing that something is supposed to achieve", ie the definition of "purpose" in this context applies here."_
The protomolecule being extraterrestrial in origin, and it being fictional, is irrelevant.
Nothing in the universe is "supposed to" anything. The Sun is not "supposed to" heat us and what we put in a nuclear reactor core is not "supposed to" provide us with the slightest bit of energy. A wooden chair is not "supposed to" keep someone's butt elevated anymore than a fallen tree in the forest is. That's us letting our imagination derail us from reality.
That said, of course I understood what you meant to say and how you felt the word "purpose" applied so I apologize if I'm coming across as patronizing or pedantic.

As for people reacting weird or annoyed in the comments to Reactions, it's something I've noticed with almost all React channels; people watch the reactions to the shows they love, and sometimes get weird about criticisms about it, even if those criticisms are fair and about the character actions. People are weird. It's not you.
I've even seen it affect React channels so badly that they become afraid to talk about their true feelings about things, which is precisely why we watch Reacts to begin with.
It really does take just a few bad apples to mess things up.
Yes. It’s so annoying. I watch a lot of reactions to a musical artist named Dimash. He has a WIDE range of genres. I’ve seen some people say they see he has talent but don’t like the genre. And they get crucified by some of the fans.
It’s ok to have different opinions people! LOL
So long as people are honest and fair let them have opinions.
What a good guess... naw, never mind.
Sometimes it feels like your criticism feels like it comes from a place of superiority, as if you know how to have done it better. Which can be jarring when not addressing particular technics. Or in another way to put is hard to tell if your trying to give an expert (objective) opinion or your own
So much of this is just stock lore from science fiction of the 40s and 50s, it's hilarious to see mundanes losing their shit.
Very few people were exposed to 40s and 50s sci-fi (novels). You should be happy that the authors are keeping that genre relevant.
So during the strike you watched the show and recorded and edited reactions? Hmm. Ok.
I don't see a problem with that. They didn't release them until the strike ended and so did not support or promote "the man" during the strike. Also, pretty sure they consulted carefully with their union reps about what they could and couldn't do.
