Greta Thunberg & Svante Thunberg - Straight Talk

  • Greta Thunberg, our little climate giant, is joined by her father, Svante, to talk about her path from an unknown Swedish school girl to an internationally recognized climate leader. If governments don't give a damn about her future, why should she give a damn about their laws! Svante discusses how Greta's passion for the truth about climate has changed the family's lives...and the world. Very compelling.

    When I was a child we were told repeatedly that we were due for another ice age. As a teenager the world was told there were giant holes in the atmosphere and we were going to die. Now as a adult we are told that the world is going to end in 12 years do to CO2 . So which fear should I really be worried about? We should be more worried about is the loss of fertile land, forests, habitats, and the ever growing abundance of garbage, polluted lands and water.

      I agree with last sentence, and climate change will affect all these areas ( except perhaps garbage). The hole in the ozone layer is one of the success stories of international action and cooperation on phasing out CFCs. Now it only concerns parts of Australia. I used to live in Tasmania, and people are very aware of this! The critical aspect of climate change are tipping points of no return.

    I'll never figure out why the billionaires (you know, those people with a thousand million dollars) are not offering rewards or creating contests for innovative solutions to the mess we have made and they have grossly profited from. Guess they need to save their money in case of an emergency other than the one we are in right now.

    I was also depressed for many years - at the age of 26 - this was 1993 - I gave my useless diploma to my university and went to south germany to a "bio" i.e. "organic" goats - and cow farm and worked there one long summer in the mountains ("Alpe Sonnhalde, near Oberstaufen-Steibis) - after I was co-founder of the first german LETS (Local Employment and Trading System) in my hometown Halle/Saale. I did only "eco" stuff all the years after and slowly managed to recover. I think today that I was suffering the same pains like mother earth. When I started to help her - she helped me to give sense to my live - which made me healthier, happier I even became a father of two boys. Man of two women.... I understand what Greta wants and dreams and suffers....

    I'm with you on most of this. But you can't drive cars? I have solar on my house which supplies 100% of my power including my electric car. THAT is how you can drive a car and still be responsible. I got a 26% rebate on my solar and a $7,500 tax credit on my electric car. I see people on a regular basis here in the USA driving big 4-wheel drive trucks to work, when they could just as well be driving a small commuter car. that same person will complain about gas prices going up by $0.50. they paid more for the truck than they would an electric car and solar. the real reason is not that they can't, it's that they just don't care! Such people ironically often have "trump" stickers on their vehicle. Makes me furious.

    • @joem2130
      @joem2130 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My family drives a big truck, we need it for our business, without it we couldn't feed ourselves or participate in society. An electric car couldn't function the way we need it to. You can't judge anyone you see by looking at them, especially their car. It sounds like your car is more of a status symbol to you than those people's so called unnecessary trucks you see.

    • @joem2130
      @joem2130 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, it's not that we don't care about electric cars, but they can't tow a trailer among many other things. Trucks are generally working tools, where your car isn't.

    There are people who earn $ 1 million on TH-cam, but others who work hard and just make little money.
    Rich people are getting richer and poor are getting poorer because they are less economically viable.
    And instead of demonstrating there, so that the environment can be saved even more efficiently, you demonstrate ONLY for the climate. This brings ONLY one thing with it: The poor would be forced to give more money to rich people. And you are so blind and just do not see it. Or you do not want to have it true.
    And:
    The trouble with all these humanity saving proclamations is that corporate big business has no intention of reducing their massive profits. The airlines want more flying customers, as do the gas and auto companies that want to sell us more gas and more cars. They have no plans of making less money. These corporate CEOs are the ones these activists should be speaking to, rather than the general public that are forced to pay inflated gas prices so they can drive to work to pay more inflated bills from yet another wasteful, greedy corporation. Fabulous eye-opening book, The Waste Makers, by Vance Packard.

We’re not in a hurry to face those challenges yet, for the simple reason that we’re not experiencing the full force of destruction that climate change is bringing to us. Many can argue that climate change happened before, but one thing for sure, adding fuel to the fire is never a good idea.

    It's not THAT difficult to understand climate change - all you need to do is take the time - to READ / RESEARCH / THINK (it's all there on internet). ie you need to sacrifice some time away from time wasters like: social media; Reality TV; stupid TV programs like cooking / gardening (just for a short while). Devote a little time and energy to it. Get informed.

    eating meat is not bad. its the quantity that each people consumes that is the problem. and also changing to electrical cars is not the problem. the problem is how often people change their car in nowadays. each car you dispose has batteries oils and many other staff that pollute the enviropment. so keep your old car until it becomes a piece of real junk. that is how we minimize our footprint. by recycling and consuming what we really need. you dont need a new smartphone every two years.

      Eating meat is exactly the reason we are here. Our taste for animals and their byproducts has driven us into the mass production of "meat" and dairy. Animals don't grow fast enough so we inject them with steroids. Cows don't make enough milk and so we feed them hormones. We now have factory farms that produce more pollution than all the automobiles pollution combined. We can all start by changing out diets, that should be the first thing we do as a whole. I know most people are afraid to give up eating animals and drinking their milk, but we do not need to eat them or drink their milk. We do not need to mass produce animals for out food needs anymore, those days are over. We do not live in caves, we are not hunters anymore. We can farm plants we and the earth would be better off for it. Unless you are in a place on this earth where you need to hunt to survive. Eating meat, drinking their milk and eggs it is completely unnecessary and just cruel.

    Stopping flights or not eating meat is not a sustainable solution by itself. The solution is simple, DECARBONIZE the climate. Help African and southern hemisphere countries to forest their lands abundantly cos their climate allows the trees to be evergreen throughout all seasons and the trees can then sink the carbon down. And Make those countries rich in an exchange for their huge forest reserves and their contribution for the climate. Meanwhile replace the fossil fuel based technologies with renewable energy sources and subsidize those technologies.

    create some sort of concerned citizen climate crisis council to work with local authorities to make our communities more resilient n eco friendly.
    get the farmers involved. talk about how biodynamic farming for all its criticisms is superior to organic re refertilising soils. uk has 30 to 40 harvests left. worldwide mass starvation in 10years.
    we need to grow our own veggies a la ww2 dig for britain mentality.
    community gardens for struggling families dependant on foodbanks (cereal jam n bread doesnt give a child nutrients to support normal development)
    if we plant food forests now, they will b producing in 10yrs when we will need them.
    uk only produces 40% food it consumes
    we wont b getting the other 60% from other countries in 10yrs^^

    I like eating meat, driving my car, and flying to vacation spots. Most people do. Why should we have to sacrifice our comforts that took thousands of years of hell on earth to gain? All we have to do is drastically reduce the population. Our planet was conveniently engineered to filter fossil fuel waste. Just not in the quantities we produce it, because of so many people. So many mouths to feed are cleaning out the oceans, the forests, etc. The real issue isn't even on the table. If it isn't soon we don't stand a a chance of averting the ecological catastrophe on the horizon and the unimaginable suffering that will come with it.

    This time it has to be for less, less meat, less kids, less car's, less phones, less holidays oversee, people will not go to the streets to demand to have less.

    The way we farm animals AND plants is the problem. Factory farming - even if you are vegan - is not going to work. We need to grow plants AND animals together LOCALLY. This is how nature works, and we have to live within nature.
    Grasslands are huge carbon sinks - if we have large herds of herbivores roaming around every year or two. Grassland has more carbon per acre than forest - grass is 80% root. th-cam.com/video/wgmssrVInP0/w-d-xo.html

    It's wonderful to see Greta's father being so supportive of her decision to speak out for the environment. While not all parents are able to take time off work or alter their careers to reduce their carbon footprint drastically due to financial necessity, those that can should take a page from what the Thunbergs are doing. And everyone should do what they can to learn more about climate/environmental issues and change their lifestyle as best they can. I don't see a parent manipulating his daughter at all. It is apparent to me that Greta herself is in charge --- getting her parents to become vegetarian/vegan, stop flying in airplanes and instead take trains, subways, buses. At the end of this video we see her helping her father make the point "practice what you preach".... what a determined, smart young lady. I'm glad she energizes current activists as well as the ordinary public. I hope she presses on, continues to pressure the powerful with her straight forwardness and doesn't take to heart all the cruel lies being thrown at her.

    The world have to be change, humanity have to be change. The concept of money don't work at all. We need to build and live toghetter as one nation without the concept of money, just like humanity once started. We need just have to build very hightech creations and transportation in a new way with solar, rain and wind energy but windenergy from strings who turn the vibration of the wind into energy without windmills, just like they would do with the Dutch Windwheel Rotterdam (Google is your friend). We need more nature, also in city's. No animal murder or captivity, and stop animal breeding.
    We need stop flying on fuel, and we need to build very save Hyperloops around the world which will travel on levitation faster then a plane as soon as possible. Make it happen, we have the technology, we have the possibility and we have the knowledge. All we have to do is put the hands together as one world nation. Build it, don't buy because money only destroy humanity and the world. The whole world needs to be treat equal. No poor poeople, no rich people, all equal! Ban money from the world.
    And maybe my English is not good enough, it is good enough to understand my message and that last thing is what counts.

Book w heros: charity.youth-leader.org, citizen climate action : www.cgrising.com/climate-crisis-resilient-regions/ We have hero speakers live meetings for schools, education programs, for self-organized badass high impact student clubs etc ... the solutions and support are available. What's needed is the DEMAND. You ppl talk only about the problem and industry solutions and advocacy. You offer no tangible YOUTH & ADULT ACTION SOLUTIONS transforming school, community, society. You don't even have the right antenna to DETECT the solutions, since you keep ignoring mega youth leadership that's already in 12,000 schools, and the transfromative approach described for climat crisis resilient regions above. You still think on the Operating Syste of infantile voters on the unsustainable society. To shift to the new society, you have to act on the Operating System of the new ABLE, ACTIVE, CARING CITIZEN... displayed by the teen heroInes in our stories. That ignorance of yours is even more frustrating for us folks with the SOLUTONS & SUPPORT.

    @14:53 "...I think humanity has to rebel against the regime of money". I absolutely agree. For me it seems that using money, as the abstract system of value it is, makes it easier for us to alienate ourselves from the consequenses of our actions. It mimics the darwinian mechanics from which we arose: I think we can do better. This is why I support the state/public media like Svante is referring to, for instance SVT or NRK. The state can be an ideal organization, the corporate has a harder time in this respect as they would be outperformed in the pursuit of money.
