The world's greatest wildlife naturalist, who's still going so strong with himself even at 94 years of age, and the 17 year old who's inspired an entire generation to join her movement against the climate crisis... couldn't've asked for a better conversation to enjoy watching. And I hope it's not at all the last, we need lots more of this between these two great individuals, Greta's answer at 28:02 were absolutely spot on

This is a great conversation. One of the largest problems in the US is that our citizens are very reticent to make a sacrifice. We like our big TV's, our big cars and don't like to be told what to do. Reducing the use of fossil fuels, and ultimately finding renewable replacements is hard for many Americans to accept. Coupled with a substandard educational system that reduces critical thinking and reasoning, 30-40% of the country supports a reactionary president who is beyond anti-environmental. Environmental changes and reduced consumerism are not part of their plans.

A simple first step in the UK is to ban single use plastics! Why are we still able to buy plastic bags in major supermarkets? People and businesses can and will adapt to an outright ban. It was good to see the ban on single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds has come into force in England recently but eliminating other single use plastics has to be quickened.

I love both of you, and thank you deeply for your committment, energy, and clear vision. I'm glad you're both getting the interconnectedness/interdependence os the issues. Ancient cultures had this knowledge. Many considered nature to be sacred; earth, water, fire, air, space, species, habitat. All were treated with respect and love. Fouling, destroying, killing, etc..any of them would have been considered a horrific affront to life, if not acts of insanity. It's really very simple. If we approach these aspects of life; the elements, and their denizens as precious/sacred, then seeing the big picture is easy. We don't destroy soil, poison the water or air, we don't send endless junk into space. It's not too late. This wisdom still exists and humans are waking up to the fact that humans are only one species living in interdependence with all other forms. Going to these wisdom cultures and asking for their advice is a logical factor. Of course great hubris has kept modern culture apart from these more natural civilizations, but again, it's not too late. They have been begging us to listen to them, and today we should. Nows. We need to grow up and act like it for the sake of all future generations. Thank you.

    • @paulmackilligin1754
      @paulmackilligin1754 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good question. I think the truth is that we can be collectively clever. The story of CFC's and the holes in the ozone layer are very interesting. That problem, which could have been very serious for humanity, was pretty-much solved through international agreements to stop using CFCs as refrigerants, and a propellants in aerosol cans, etc.
The difference is that the oil industry is far larger and far more powerful than the CFC industry was.
So perhaps it is not about being collectively clever or not, but more a matter of power.
The oil industry's interests are in general opposite to the interests of humanity as a whole. That industry will lobby hard to be allowed to continue destroying the habitat and environment that all humans depend on to survive and thrive.
You can't stop the oil industry working in its own interest. You just can't. What you can do is stop politicians taking more notice of the oil lobby than of the interests of their populations as a whole. It's not easy, but you can do that.

@@paulmackilligin1754 Re: "a matter of power", the power to manipulate and undermine the common good, our common interests. Democracy is based on fairness for all. Manipulation undermines this fairness. Big Tobacco faught tooth and nail to be able to manipulate public opinion. In the end this one industry lost in the USA in the Master Tobacco Settlement. The other industries need to be dealt with as well.
Re: "You can't stop the oil industry working in its own interest. You just can't". Why should societies put up with minorities dictating and manipulating against society's interests? Corrupt politicians should lose their government entitlements and corruption is ANY behaviour undermining the common good.
We humans have not only the strength of "intelligent competitiveness", we also have the strength of "social cooperation". No other mammal can cooperate in millions and billions like we can. However, we not always do as e.g., wars show us. Hence we need SOCIAL INVESTMENTS in order to live better together. One such investment was the founding of the UN after WWII. We haven't had a WW for 3/4 of a century hence that move to increase world cooperation appears to have paid off. Living together does not happen by itself. We need to sit together and work things out in order to come to a fair for all resolution. We need to be wise and recognise manipulation not in the interest of the common good for what it is: corruption.
While the "divide and conquer" brigade gets us to focus on our individual issues, our collective issues are overrunning us. While we rearrange the Titanic's deckchairs, the ship is sinking. We need to focus on where the biggest problems are not the first thing that comes to mind or the first thing that is suggested by the "divide and conquer" brigade.

@@peterstrous2092 Yes, perhaps I should have said you can't stop the oil industry TRYING to work in it's own interests. You can't appeal to the oil industry's better nature, because it isn't human and has no 'better nature'. We can of course, and we must, work in OUR own interests to thwart the aims of the oil industry to maximise profits at any expense to humanity.
What I meant was that it is futile to try to persuade the oil industry not to be so mean to us. It can no more be reasoned with than a mosquito. The mosquito wants blood and I don't want to give it any. There's plenty I can do to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, but appealing to its 'better nature' isn't going to work. And neither is swearing at it - believe me, I've tried! A mosquito's nature is to bite me and there's no way to change that.

Greta's maturity is unbelievable - her answer to moderator's question what would be the one thing we can do: "to educate ourselves to understand the issue" shows the wisdom that very few humans posses. Once humanity understands the issue, it will be much easier to implement the solutions.
I just hope that her generation will have persistence and similar maturity in understanding that it is Now that they have to act. Not tomorrow, not in 10 years.
There are very few political leaders who are able and willing to do the change. It is Greta's generation that is the only hope for humanity as they aren't yet fully conditioned by the rotten society which chases the profit and short-term interests while completely lacking a big picture which is: we've almost destroyed the life-support machine that we depend upon.

I think Greta can become a great manager of communications, because she has learned to wonder about her own communication and abilities.
then after learning so much about communication, she can analyze it, observe it, and help it.
Greta made really smart and constructive remarks during this talk, and some were about issues in communication.
Sir David obviously enjoyed this a lot.

Greta Thunberg's perceptions are truly remarkable. Older naturalists have seen the passing of so many species within relatively short lifespans. I can remark personally about so many bird species of field and meodow which I no longer see; Bobolink, Meodowlark, Eastern Bluebird and so many kinds of field sparrow. The same applies to marsh species that I commonly saw as a child: both species of marsh wren, bittern, 3 species of rail...the list goes on. The same applies to reptiles, amphibians, insects. After dark I listened to Whipooorwill, Bullfrog, Katydid and Woodcock. These experiences are but fond memories for me and have been denied to the young. There have been movements here and there in the past but never effectual in curbing these trends. The issues are not only global warming but habitat loss and overpopulation of our species. The epidemic has demonstrated that. It may be that it takes an epidemic and the threat of world social collapse to bring us to our senses. Greta Thunberg is giving voice to members of our species concerned with these issues and all those who cannot speak for themselves.

And I still feel that helplessness, particularly because there are still so many people worldwide who don't understand the existential threat we're under. It means I'd have to fight against stupidity and, as we say in Germany, "Against stupidity even the gods are powerless."

I'm a boomer and any boomers who are environmentally concerned came to that understanding, we weren't born with it. Now we have almost entire generations coming through to whom our need for a healthy environment is obvious. Indeed it's estimated over 90% of people are concerned to some degree. 50 years ago there were very few of us and that's an extraordinary change in just a few decades.
Our species is changing the way we view our earth and whenever we change our perception of anything it changes our response to it. We're currently seeing the growth of that changed response and it's happening faster than the growth of environmental concern so we may well make it through this transition to a sustainable future. If not then unsustainable is terminal, but not for the earth David. Life will probably continue on this planet without us, just not in conditions we can survive.

Around 9:15 David Attenborough describes being cut off and forced to deal with day to day survival. I think many people feel that way - fearful about health care or housing or feeding their family. Being kept in this state prevents them from finding a more sustainable way to live. They can sympathize, appreciate and even agree with the need for climate action... but today, see no ability to change... What every-day people need are new stories of a world they can live in... new ways of thinking about how beautiful life can be. They need these new stories to replace the horrid ones given to them by corporate leaders.

What a delightful interaction - thank you both - and those who put it together. This is how we need to listen to each other and learn from one another. Across all barriers.

Coral reefs are like visiting life on another planet. It is maybe where we'll have to go...somewhere in outer space, no more around earth. I have had the same shock of "reefs of paradise" turned into cemeteries.
