    Completely agree, people focus on the insulation but windows and front cab are what let the most heat escape/enter. It's worth spending more time on a curtain between the cab and rear of the van, and window covers. The reality putting insulating inside metal walls isn't going to do a lot, as the heat can transfer through the metal and around the insulation anyway. I built out a transit and at least that has thermal breaks between many of the contacts between the inner wall and outer wall of the van.
    I also used recycled plastic insulation (like Thinsulate) you can get it in thin sheets or bats, it's cheap, easy to install, safe to handle, and it is resistant to mould and moisture, and can breath to let moisture that accumulates on the wall out again.

    • @JohnBaker3000
      @JohnBaker3000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The inside layer (living area) of reflectix provides the thermal break and is a vapor barrier, if properly sealed. It's as good as it gets, from a cost/performance perspective. There is no perfect solution. It's a van.

    Hello you guys,
    I am very impressed by the way you are insulating your rigs. I'm looking out some van conversion builders for a near future. But in my case I will be living in it full time BUT I am in Canada, and here the temperature could get as low as -30 degree Fahrenheit.
    What are you doing for the pipings and the tanks (grey and black). Are you putting them under the rigs in an insulated box with heat???

    8:20 I'm sorry... did you say you put reflectix on yr van walls first, then wool then another layer of reflectix? If yes then that goes against every professional who says reflectix on van walls is pointless and that it's only good with a one inch airgap. Or just use on windows.

      I think the expert on van insulation is Greg Virgoe who has a video here. m.th-cam.com/video/DKy6WnFh368/w-d-xo.html. He is an industrial HVAC pro in his work life. According to him, reflectics are intended as a vapor barrier to keep moisture from breathing, cooking etc from reaching the outside van walls and condensing on the inside of the outside walls and wetting the insulation. I’m with 007nadinet: I don’t see how reflectics stuck directly to the outside walls would do anything except maybe keep moisture off the inside of the outside wall, but by then your insulation is already wet. Anybody else have thoughts?

    • @JohnBaker3000
      @JohnBaker3000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billvanarsdale Just need to make sure that the living/warm/occupied/moisture side vapor barrier is really sealed well. The outer reflectix can't hurt, and will help, as long as the inner (living side) is sealed. well.

    So normally the Kilmat is only meant to cover a partial amount of the walls/floors/ceiling. Are you covering the entire floor purely for the waterproofing feature that Alex mentioned? Seemed like overkill so just wondering about that. I love the WOOL idea, might have to use that instead of foam board even though it will cost a little more.
