Rich Lo Scotty does try and diagnose stuff, in this video he said he already tried cleaning the maf months ago and it didn't help. Could he have gone in with a multimeter and look at how much volts goes to and from the thing? Yes but he still fixed it, the only other thing that would effect a maf is a dirty air filter and I'm sure he already checked that.

Leaky fuel pressure regulator that's not holding pressure after shutdown will cause a slow start after sitting. Can usually leave the key on for a few sec can help before starting. A fast start relies on pressurized fuel at the injectors as soon as the key is turned. If it has to prime up it may stall.

The Curious Noob You sure are right they are expensive as hell, and the kicker is they are nothing more than just simple heating elements which create resistance readings and change the voltage signal going to the PCM, surrounded by a plastic shield and a stainless steel mesh grid. Probably only $40 in materials tops but the manufacturer wants $400 for them.
LoL, I have this problem. My codes are for my knock sensor and it pulled it twice, and also my oxygen sensor. I have been running the car with the bad knock sensor because I heard it's ok to do so, it just runs it rich I guess? Well the other day I had the car sitting for 4 days, went to start it, and it would not start. I reset the computer and pumped the gas furiously while crankin the ignition and it finally started, with a cloud of burned oil smoke! The car is a 98 altima, its a beater, I paid $1k for it, so I'm not too quick to fix and maintain it. I probably should have waited until saturday with this big long comment, but I had to leave this because this is the problem with the car, it cranks too long before starting! Thanks once again for giving away your hard earned trade secrets and making these vids. Live free or die!
heck, on that beater, as long as it starts, live with it. But you could do my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car" as dirty old ones often do that too
Be sure to check the fuel filter too, I often find those things are decades old and neglected even when shops have charged people for replacements on them they haven't actually done(VERY common in franchise shops where the filter is difficult to get to). I do the key 5x on off for 5 seconds prime and crank, if it fires right up then you know you have a fuel rail/filter/pump problem.
***** the problem is especially bad on some Saturn's when dropping the tank is necessary. A whole lot of those cars went to the dealer for service and they charge for the part and the labor but when you take it apart you find it's never been touched. GM was never proud of their Saturn brand and it is very apparent.
There is no need to drop the tank. Pull the trunk carpeting and look for some cover. Remove it and there is the fuel pump. What a waste of time dropping the tank.
You are my goto guy, I had hard starting with 3.4l chevy and by your vids I came up with replacing the MAP sensor for $85 because simptoms matched the best. But still had to hold pedal down an inch to get started hot or cold with rich gas fumes/smoke when it finally started out the exaust pipe. So botom line it wasnt the problem, however evey othe car guy had a vid on the Fuel Pressure Regulator that matched my problem exact as when you removed the vacuum line to the Fuel Pressure Regulator gas would sputter out where the vacuume line was, mine sputterd the gas too, problem solved for the additional cost of $52 for the new Fuel Pressure Regulator. Please do a vid on this problem. Thank you for your videos, keep up the good work.
Alex Ramos nine times out of ten it is the horn itself. hope this helps. find you actual horn pull off leads set multi meter to 20 volts. hold multi meter to both positive and negative of the horn leads. have a buddy honk the horn... if you have between 11.5-12.5 volts while he presses on horn change the horn
had the crank issue in My 06 g35 coupe. and connected the scanner ,had bad camshaft sensors on bank 1 and 2 . replaced them after seeing a DIY video since I was quoted around 200-300 dollars everywhere . did an oil change and a new filter and car is running marvelous
I've been thinking alot lately about the older cars/trucks. Find one that has a good body and maybe needs a tranny or brakes/struts/ exhaust and paint. I long for the days of just jumpering a wire or something simple to get out of a problem on the side of the road!
I have a 2003 Ford F-150 with the same problem. Started going bad about a year ago and got to the point now where it won't start at all. The computer finally tripped a code the other day po340 for the camshaft position sensor. Thanks for this vid Scotty! Was super helpful
Funny, I was about to make a video about my 97 Blazer with the same problem. When it's a cold start up, it'll start up with no problem. Once I turn off the car within a couple of seconds and 4 minutes or so, it'll start up again, no hesitating. However, once the car has been sitting between 15 minutes and 3-4 hours after driving, I have to hold down the switch for 3-4 seconds for it to start. Which is sometimes embarrassing. I should add that when it's cold outside, below 35 degree fahrenheit, I'll always get a check engine light about fuel/air mix ratio. Is that the cause of it not starting properly?
Scotty Kilmer hey scotty im doing a headgasket job on my project car a 3000gt sohc and i needa take the top engine mount out to get the timing cover off can i jack it up a little bit on the oil pan? or do i have to pull the rear mount and the mount on the top (the one im trying to remove) and use a engine hoist to do it?
Shouldn't the MAF sensor have a switched 12v power source? _So you shouldn't have to disconnect the negative terminal tripping radio anti-theft codes and other head aches._
Azurren Those anti theft radios are the dumbest things I've ever seen. The lockout on my old one didn't even work, and seriously, who steals factory radios? Aftermarket is where it's at, there's so much more offered on those units.
Kind of a good habit to disconnect the battery anytime you're messing with wires, whether it be you short something out or shock your self. Neither are fun lol
***Classified*** i had my oem radio unlocked years ago when the code tripped years ago when i had the battery changed now i can let the thing sit for a week and it wont go on anti theft lock out.
SuperJeremi10 Mine was a GM theftlock radio, and I never had to unlock it, even after letting it sit for a month. I didn't know you could disable the lockout.
Thank you scottie..my car has this problem now...drove 3000 miles across country...it always starts 2nd time....going tontake it to the shop before leaving California. Smile
jawmom2 You can't get a better car. The use them as taxis and police cars in Bangkok and in that heat with the AC always on they get 1,000,000 kilometers or more out of them . (That's about 600,000 miles)
Hey Scotty, I have a '07 Dodge Charger with a 3.5L engine. Ever since I've had it, the car would sometimes take longer than usual to start (roughly 4-5 seconds). I've had it for roughly 5 years now but I'm just so tired of dealing with the issue. No CEL has came on for it-no codes. The only thing that I feel may be tied into this problem is that when I'm at a stop, the engine would shudder a little with the RPM's slightly fluctuating but it doesn't happen as often. I keep up with the maintenance as best as I can. What I've replaced on the car since I'v had it: ALL oxygen sensors, BOTH catalytic converters, alternator, starter, PCV, spark plugs, air filter, water pump, battery, shocks and struts, and timing belt (I know some of things listed or irrelevant but I just wanted to show how serious I am about my car's upkeep :)). I was thinking it might be the camshaft sensor and/or crankshaft sensor but thought I'd ask for your thoughts. Thanks!
Scotty Kilmer I have a Nissan maxima 99 I have a problem when it's hot and car sits outside on the sun car won't start when I open the hood for about 20 minutes to cool off car starts no problem any idea? When cold out starts no problem just when it sits on the sun it do this battery is good changed it no check engine?
Aussie here. I had a 1995 Holden Commodore with Buick derived 3800 V6 and it was probably this that caused the excessive turning over time, though not chronic like this Chev, so did nothing about it.When I had an LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas -known as a propane system in the US) system fitted, it would fire up right away after that and I recall the the gas carb was fitted beyond the MAF inline along the intake pipe!!
That is been the most informative video I've seen God knows I've search plenty of videos none with so much details thank you so much I'll try to replace my air flow system hopefully I'll get my truck running again
The maf on my 3800 camaro had cracked at the sensor tip and it caused no start and no idle problems. I could get the car to start by giving a bit of pedal pressure and then starting it up. It would also idle if you held it at idle speed by pedal. I was able to drive it for a couple of days like that. Has a new maf now and runs perfect. How it cracked in the first place I have no idea.
devilmastah Well, you won't have any MAF sensors to worry about. You'll have to fall back to fuel/air/spark and problem solve from there. Get ready to do a lot of inspection or take it to the pros.
devilmastah If you're talking old cars, well, carb fuel mixure adjustment and overall carb condition can cause a hard start as well as normal tune up issues. However, the biggest contributor to slow starts on old cars would be the dwell adjustment on the points inside the distributor cap. You can dial it in to run, but to have a quick start requires even more dialing in. GM excelled here as there was a little door in the side of the dist. cap which allowed an allen wrench to be used to "fine tune" the dwell (when using dwell meter) while the engine is running. On a Ford, you have to remove the cap and rotor, and keep trying to tune it in with a feeler gauge, and hoping you can get the best results on your dwell meter. A real PITA. So there is a small sample on an "old" car.
Thanks for this tip Scotty. Having the same issue up here in cold Michigan however just starting it the first time of the day on a cold morning. No codes have shown on dash and only 6000 miles on a 2017 V8 Tundra. BAFFLED.
A little thing, but I noticed that the MAF sensor boot should have been clocked about 5 degrees clockwise on the air filter housing. There is a tab on the air cleaner box that the slot on the boot fits into. The boot would then slide into the air cleaner housing about another 3/8" or so.
hey scotty. so I'm having a little problem with my 1977 Celica.. I have two problems. 1st problem it has a slow crank and starts. 2nd problem is I'm hearing this squeeky grinding sound coming from the starter motor.. I'm thinking the teeth on the motor is worn out. but I'm not sure about the first problem. I taken the battery to be checked and its charged and good. any thoughts? thank you!!
In our repair garage theres a huge portrait of Scotty Kilmer on the wall. Before anybody starts the day, he should make an offering and say thanks to Scotty.
Yeah, I think he missed that (or fixed it later on), all the cars I have worked on that needed the MAF sensor exchanged always has those tabs, and iv'e aligned them for the sake of it.
Hey scotty and everyone else, i have a 2005 Honda Odyssey that cranks very slow and today it didn't start the first time. Im thinking it might be the starter or the alternator. Any suggestions? Please answer ASAP! Thanks
Hey Scotty love all the videos you have helped me out more than once. I have a 2010 Ford Explorer that long cranks if it sits overnight but once started it does not have the issue when I park it for a couple hours. Do you think this is my issue?
I have a 2002 Chevy Express van with a 5.0L. It developed a hard start problem where it wouldn't catch until the second or third turn of the key in the cold morning but would start on the first try all day long after that. So, I had a shop look for any codes and there were none (I now have a code reader) and to check the fuel pressure which turned out to be fine. I did clean the mass air flow sensor to no avail. I did change the air filter which was clogged with dirt but that didn't help. I even went as far as to have the battery checked (it showed 12.73 vdc) and was assured it was fine. On a whim, I changed the three year old two year battery and shazam, no more starting issues!
Hey Scotty John here I love your channel you're a great mechanic you have helped me out in more ways than I can count but I have a question I have a 2000 Chevy cavalier 2.2 l 4 I have recently replaced the head gasket water pump thermostat cam sensor temperature sensor and now my car is having a hard start is there something that I'm doing wrong or something that I'm missing it has new plugs new plug wires the cool pack is firing but it is getting harder and harder to start??
Could you make a video diagnosing the same issue with a carburetor? I have a 93 Mitsubishi Galant it takes about a 5 second or so to start up when the engine's cold but quick starts when it's warm what should i look into first?
i replaced my mass ari flow sensor 17 times bcause of you to the tune of 2000 dollars now i cant get my sister/wife a valenrtines day presnet because of you.
Hi, we have a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali. It has a hesitant start but it will turn over on the second try. Tonight I noticed that the main headlights arent working but the brights work.
My 98 chevy pickup turns over really slow when its warm. 2-4 slow turns then it fires right up. Had the battery alternator and starter replaced / tested and all were fine. Any ideas?
Probably a bit late to the party but I was having this problem on my 96 Yukon (same platform as your truck) and it turned out to be a bad battery terminal on the end of the cable. A new battery and starter didn't fix my problem, but a simple $3 universal side post terminal from the auto parts store did. Always try the simple, cheap stuff first :D
I have a question can a throttle position sensor , and a coolant Temp sensor? Also produce the same symptoms as the air mass flow sensor? Avoiding the car from starting.
I kind of have a love/hate relationship with those diagnostic machines. I had an issue with my car a couple years ago and took it to 2 or 3 shops and they couldn't tell me what was wrong with my car another shop didn't even bother looking at anything b/c my car is too old to have that port on it! I finally had to take it to a dealer and pay them over $100 just to CHECK things out....turns out the problem was an easy fix that I could have done at home for about $25!
Could a maf senor be faulty without showing fault code or engine light? As when I cleaned the maf recently it really helped with the starting issue I have. I’m Having trouble startin my vauxhall combo van in the mornings it will start first time the stall then cranks for ages then fires up and is fine til next morning Only p1219 shows up as a fault code Thanks
I have a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus that broke dwn on the freeway my speedometer and odometer won't read and not the car won't drive I anticipated waste any more money on street mechanics can diagnose why my car won't start... Battery dead and its a new battery ... I was told it's either my starter or fuel pump I've tested the fuel pump and relay and I don't hear anything at the gas tank please tell me you live on the city Michigan to check it out your videos are the most informative I've ever seen
I have a 1998 3.0L Ford Ranger that used to start Cold on first key turn but now takes longer to start and also now refuses to start when Hot until it cools down, but also runs rough at higher RPMs. Question: What are my possible areas to look at?
2016 Chevy Silverado LT 4L Have issue turning over the truck when starting ....or studder start or prolonged start trying to turn over ? Alternator/starter/battery? No check engine light

+MrNotorius5500 yep exactly! You can also use electronics contact cleaner if MAF spray is unavailable to clean the sensor.

But you could do my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car" as dirty old ones often do that too
Scotty Kilmer thanks for taking time to answer me scotty. Yes I was thinking to clean the injectors, i will start there!
Peter Carlson Usually have someone turn the key to ignition while with the fuel cap taken off listen in the filler hole for a noise.
Peter Carlson The Chevy trucks have an issue with the check ball on replacement fuel pumps and priming works well in lieu of replacement.
AP499D25 there is no cover on the 2005 Saturn vue, amongst other models you have to drop the tank to get at the fuel filter inside.
Thanks Scotty! One of the most reliable on TH-cam!
my favorite line. "we'll just unscrew the clamps and get the rubber to come off. Ungh!"
+Joe Shaw I love is videos for the entertainment value. Ungh!
I don't think you plugged that rubber union in straight. It's supposed to line up with the notch in the air box. 2:47
considering it now runs like a top, obviously it's doing its job sealing air
I knew someone would mention that.
Scotty Kilmer Scotty hey man I'm trying to find out more about why my car horn doesn't work (Lincoln LS V8) I don't know where the fuses are at
Alex Ramos nine times out of ten it is the horn itself. hope this helps. find you actual horn pull off leads set multi meter to 20 volts. hold multi meter to both positive and negative of the horn leads. have a buddy honk the horn... if you have between 11.5-12.5 volts while he presses on horn change the horn
Scotty Kilmer There’s always that one smart aleck 😂😂😂
had the crank issue in My 06 g35 coupe. and connected the scanner ,had bad camshaft sensors on bank 1 and 2 . replaced them after seeing a DIY video since I was quoted around 200-300 dollars everywhere . did an oil change and a new filter and car is running marvelous
If everyone at least once in their life owned a carburetted car without a computer, I believe their troubleshooting ability would improve!
I enjoy your videos please keep them coming
Best and most honest car guy. Big up Scotty Kilmer
Hi Scotty, is it okay if I ask how much you charged the gentleman for this quick fix?
I charged a woman for a similar job, told her she either gives me a bj or 10 dollars, she choose both
hope she didn't have braces
googleccd079 yikes...
I was watching a playlist of these videos... I can't believe you made the video series back in 07
Funny, I was about to make a video about my 97 Blazer with the same problem.
Is that the cause of it not starting properly?
could be with that code I'd start there.
SvddenDeth yes just put a block of would on the pad so it dont dent the pan. Make sure no one moves the jack
SvddenDeth your an idiot
Gaz Girl dont be a ass about stuff im asking questions to, if you dont like peoples questions dont say shit about it
Scotty is the best I swear, he just makes it look eazy breazy.
***Classified***
i had my oem radio unlocked years ago when the code tripped years ago when i had the battery changed now i can let the thing sit for a week and it wont go on anti theft lock out.
nice
SuperJeremi10 Mine was a GM theftlock radio, and I never had to unlock it, even after letting it sit for a month. I didn't know you could disable the lockout.
Thank you scottie..my car has this problem now...drove 3000 miles across country...it always starts 2nd time....going tontake it to the shop before leaving California. Smile
You're the best, Scotty. You ever think about making a video taking about which makes/models are the best for buying used for first time buyers?
just buy a toyota, simple solution
Scotty Kilmer is a corolla good for hard driving?
jawmom2 You can't get a better car. The use them as taxis and police cars in Bangkok and in that heat with the AC always on they get 1,000,000 kilometers or more out of them . (That's about 600,000 miles)
thats good cause i deliver pizzas and i need something reliable for the hard driving conditions
It will be a toyota Celica
Thanks!
+JVenger fuel injection minor problems do that, have a pro like me check it out with live and mode 6 data info, often just dirty injectors does that
Just revisiting some old Scotty. You sir are a national treasure.
this guy should do horror movies.
fixing cars often turns into a horror movie
Scotty Kilmer so true
Scotty Kilmer I have a Nissan maxima 99 I have a problem when it's hot and car sits outside on the sun car won't start when I open the hood for about 20 minutes to cool off car starts no problem any idea? When cold out starts no problem just when it sits on the sun it do this battery is good changed it no check engine?
Uma Pasa12 suspect ignition control module
Uma Pasa12 if it isnt maf sensor than clean intake thotle body, my maxima did weird thing too.
You're absolutely the best mechanic ever! Hilarious too!
And for carbs, it's a bazillion and 1 possibilities :P
Brad V yep. Most likely a bad carb. New carb at that point
Any one notice he didnt line up the Mass air flow sensor the right way?
That is been the most informative video I've seen God knows I've search plenty of videos none with so much details thank you so much I'll try to replace my air flow system hopefully I'll get my truck running again
Damn I remember the party lines. I must be getting old.
You should also give suggestions for people with cars that dont even have a computer :P
then you go to auto zone, they scan them free for you at their stores
I was referring to old cars ;)
devilmastah Well, you won't have any MAF sensors to worry about. You'll have to fall back to fuel/air/spark and problem solve from there. Get ready to do a lot of inspection or take it to the pros.
devilmastah
If you're talking old cars, well, carb fuel mixure adjustment and overall carb condition can cause a hard start as well as normal tune up issues.
JRobert111111 wow i remember that litter silver door. now that's old.
This guys kinda funny I can't believe I just stumbled across his channel you sir got yourself a new sub
Scotty I wish u can fix my car..Hard to find a good mechanic
So ture. I wish I could find someone like him locally !!!
I don’t even have a car issue but his videos are addicting.
So what if my car has OBD 1.5? lol
GM, making things difficult. lol
You make everything look so easy, Scotty!!
if im half as cool as you when im your age i will be happy x
Thanks for the support!
Thanks for this tip Scotty. Having the same issue up here in cold Michigan however just starting it the first time of the day on a cold morning. No codes have shown on dash and only 6000 miles on a 2017 V8 Tundra. BAFFLED.
U look like Hilary Clinton
Lee Browne they're related, he mentioned it before.
I taken the battery to be checked and its charged and good. any thoughts? thank you!!
This guy is the BEST!!!! Helped me so.. many times.
In our repair garage theres a huge portrait of Scotty Kilmer on the wall. Before anybody starts the day, he should make an offering and say thanks to Scotty.
thank u! my crazy car is having trouble starting too. You are funny. I'm glad to find you on TH-cam
at 2:23, were you supposed to line up the plastic tab on the air box in between the 2 notches on the rubber mass air flow sensor boot?
Was gonna say the same
Yeah, I think he missed that (or fixed it later on), all the cars I have worked on that needed the MAF sensor exchanged always has those tabs, and iv'e aligned them for the sake of it.
Scotty, you are the MAN for taking time to post these videos.
Secondly, do you have any experience with rotary engines? Specifically Mazda RX8s?
yes, fun to drive, not to fix. They all have engine internal problems as they age, even those newer versions.
Scotty Kilmer you are the best!
Hey scotty and everyone else, i have a 2005 Honda Odyssey that cranks very slow and today it didn't start the first time. Im thinking it might be the starter or the alternator. Any suggestions? Please answer ASAP! Thanks
Scotty Kilmer is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Hey Scotty love all the videos you have helped me out more than once. I have a 2010 Ford Explorer that long cranks if it sits overnight but once started it does not have the issue when I park it for a couple hours. Do you think this is my issue?
Tanks Scotty for saving this old world 1 more time
I have a 2002 Chevy Express van with a 5.0L.
+Abunai One yep, batteries have a TON to do with car starting, yours is a rare condition, but does happen
Tonight I noticed that the main headlights arent working but the brights work.
first, have the battery and alternator load tested, auto zones do that free. Pray it's that simple and not a computer or wiring failure
Thank you Scotty!
After watching several of these youtube videos I was thinking the same thing. TH-cam, what a great resource.
Straight forward ! Go Scotty you are super positive and I really enjoy you great attitude to fixing stuff. Thanks heaps.
Scotty Kilmer, you are the man!
The right tool for the job. Thanks, Scotty.
There are many but you are an icon Bud.
My 98 chevy pickup turns over really slow when its warm. 2-4 slow turns then it fires right up. Had the battery alternator and starter replaced / tested and all were fine. Any ideas?
either starter is wearing out, or the motor itself. Pray it's the starter
Scotty Kilmer Starter was just replaced, time for a compression test :/
Probably a bit late to the party but I was having this problem on my 96 Yukon (same platform as your truck) and it turned out to be a bad battery terminal on the end of the cable. A new battery and starter didn't fix my problem, but a simple $3 universal side post terminal from the auto parts store did. Always try the simple, cheap stuff first :D
Scotty, 01 Accord, 3.0 Long crank before start, but anytime it's jacked up in front to work on , Starts right away. Crud in tank or Fuel pump?
Thanks for the help Scotty! Your videos are extremely helpful
I have a question can a throttle position sensor , and a coolant Temp sensor? Also produce the same symptoms as the air mass flow sensor? Avoiding the car from starting.
Was there a check engine light on before you hook up your diagnostic?
When you were diagnosing with the obd2 reader, was it giving a check engine light or was it off?
+Jose Aleman it was off
I kind of have a love/hate relationship with those diagnostic machines.
I’m Having trouble startin my vauxhall combo van in the mornings it will start first time the stall then cranks for ages then fires up and is fine til next morning
Only p1219 shows up as a fault code
Thanks
I have a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus that broke dwn on the freeway my speedometer and odometer won't read and not the car won't drive I anticipated waste any more money on street mechanics can diagnose why my car won't start... Battery dead and its a new battery ... I was told it's either my starter or fuel pump I've tested the fuel pump and relay and I don't hear anything at the gas tank please tell me you live on the city Michigan
to check it out your videos are the most informative I've ever seen
I have a 1998 3.0L Ford Ranger that used to start Cold on first key turn but now takes longer to start and also now refuses to start when Hot until it cools down, but also runs rough at higher RPMs.
Question: What are my possible areas to look at?
2016 Chevy Silverado LT 4L
Have issue turning over the truck when starting ....or studder start or prolonged start trying to turn over ?
Alternator/starter/battery?
No check engine light
you're the best Scotty. I hope you hit a million subscribers one day. I... i love you Scotty
